“Wonder, which is the beginning of all deeper understanding Kierkegaard
Being close to people, concerned
Design meaningful tools and experiences Being curious about the world
Being a designer means to me having the same curiosity and exploring attitude of a spaceman on another planet, giving myself always the possibility to be surprised. The wonder is the driving force: keeping the mind as long as possible as a blank page, letting the New and Unknown draw paths in which the stream of wonder will grow and finally push the designer to go a step further. A step closer to the people. The designer is concerned. His aim is to focus on the flow of activity in order to catch the smallest interruption of the fluidity. It is like watching a man climbing and registering all those points in which he is looking around to find a good rock to grab. It is all about bringing awareness on those specific frames, preparing himself to actively respond to this lack of smoothness. The designer is not a creator of shapes. He is supposed to draw tools and experiences. The aim of the design activity is to provide a tool which is able to enhance the fluidity of the whole scene. In this sense the designer “manipulates experiences, giving people the tools to smoothly adapt to the fast changes.
:NestBench 2008 The municipality of Pavia announced a competition: they wanted designers to ideate a urban furniture which was able to make the students of the city gather and communicate together. NestBench was developed from the idea of gathering and telling stories around a fire. The observation of the way young people seat brought another requirement on the table: the versatility of the seat. Nest Bench wants to be an attractive, warm and comfortable spot in the big cold square of the northern italian city.
The metal structure of NestBench has five different sections. They vary in order to allow people to seat in the way they prefer. The bench is then covered by specific tubes made out of a sandwich of PE and aluminium (the same tubes used for floor heating systems). A boiler hidden into the structure keeps the water into the tubes warm.

Eneco, one of the largest producers and suppliers of gas, electricity and heat in the Netherlands, asked our team of design students to develop and prototype a home energy manager. The main focus of the concept was to visualize the invisible flow of energy in the house, making people able to manage and control their consumptions. Ernest is a device able to track and control the electricity and gas consumption of each room of the house. When it is on standby, a graphic animation shows the level of consumption of the whole house using the metaphor of a tree that looses its leaves. You can choose to visualize the electricity consumption, the gas consumption or the costs for each room of your house. You can set you personal preferences about heating and lighting and, when you get home, Ernest recognizes you and welcomes you activating your settings.

In the heating modality, Ernest allows you to see the actual temperature of the rooms you selected and eventually change it to the temperature that you want. In the electricity mode, Ernest shows you the appliances that are currently on in the rooms that you selected. The appliances are coded by colour, showing the most consuming ones and also the ones in stand-by. In the cost interface it is possible to visualize the costs weekly, monthly and over a year. Moreover you can set a limit of expense for your energy consumption and Ernest will warn you when you are over your intended expense. It is possible to program you personal key ring, assigning to it specific preferences about heating and lighting. The system will then recognize when you arrive home and will activate your personal energy settings. See also www.youtube.com/ideitd and click on “Eneco 01 Ernest video.
:Ecoville 2009 The assignment that our team of students got from Shifft, a company which uses gaming as a way to promote sustainable behaviour, had as a goal to tackle the lack of knowledge about the impact and the origin of the fast moving consumer goods. The design solution we came up with was tailored to the Albert Heijn chain. It consists of: -an in-store information provision system in which the user can use his/her smart phone or smart barcode scanner to scan the products the user is interested in. The system then provides him/her with relevant information about the ecological impact of the product with such indicators as transport, packaging, etc. -the feedback on the ecological shopping performance takes the shape of an online, visual, RPG-inspired game in which a model of an ecosystem is used to visualize the user’s shopping performance as the impacts of his/her purchases become visible in this ecosystem, with extra information about causes and effects at hand.

The main actors of the system are Shifft, the manager of the system, Albert Heijn, which will require the information from its supplier and also a non-governmental organization that will ensure the validity of the provided information. Finally, to be able to make the gaming application operational, Facebook has to provide the needed application platform. The online game Ecoville is indeed fully integrated into Facebook in order to exploit the effects of social network, including its motivating components and social cooperation values. People can cooperate in a sustainable dinner together, lowering the level of pollution of their ecosystem.

:Home theater system 2009 The Home theatre system of Philips was the focus of a detailed user test and a redesign. The main problems related to the navigation of the system and to the smoothness of the interaction were addressed into the new design. The main goal was the cognitive and visual match between the remote control and the interface. The remote that was designed is characterized by three sensitive surfaces which correspond to three specific areas of the interface: the volume, the navigation of the channels or the control of the media contents, the navigation of the main menu. The test of the redesigned model showed that the improvements done were successful in providing a smoother interaction with the device.

In the previous model of Home theater system the information was spread on different sources: the screen, the remote and the device itself. The aim of the redesigned system is to concentrate all the information needed on the screen, which should be the only focus of attention.
