HUNTER CAINE

GEORGIA TECH M.ARCH PORTFOLIO

Architecture is the ability to express feelings and emotions through design and creation. Without architecture, what would give life to the areas we inhabit and interact with everyday? This portfolio follows my journey through the undergraduate architecture program at Clemson University.

Bibliotecherella di Genova, also known as the tiny library of Genoa, looks to bring a new twist to the idea of a contemporary micro library. The usage of both the above and below space of the main form allows for a separation of program and amenities: having the open cafe above, and the secluded library and interactive roof learning space below, along with an amphitheater space that serves as an in-between connection. The monolithic slab which acts as the primary building form and structure, serves to create an organic symbiosis with the site present. The focus on creating a big space that adds to the overall urban context of the harbor leads to each piece of the building creating a fragmented immediate context.

02Entangled Living Professor Douglas Hecker Architecture 3510 Spring 2020 Individual Entangled Living is the first 3D printed home thats goal is to challenge the idea of typical architecture. The printing process allows for walls to be constantly intersecting and the creation of large openings connecting to the outside allows for a nomadic experience that plays with the sensations of what’s interior and what’s exterior. As the walls twist and wrap around each other they begin to create new moments that enrich the experience and hammer down the idea of entanglement. Entangled Living is trying to push the boundaries of what defines a space and its goal is to bring a completely immersive experience that blurs the line between the quiet private life and the robust outside world.

03Cottontown Public Library Professor Robert Bruhns Architecture 2520 Spring 2019 Individual Located in Cottontown, a small development in Columbia, South Carolina. The Cottontown Public Library can be seen as a focal point for the community. With multiple services such as a large public collection, a maker space, multiple classrooms and conference rooms, and also a large auditorium and outdoor space that can be separated from the library and opened independently, the Cottontown Public Library will be able to serve the many different resident’s needs. The form is designed from taking multiple similar geometries with slightly varied dimensions and orientation and creates a space that can manipulate the occupant’s point of view based on where they are and what they are doing.

04Hillside Symmetry Professor Robert Bruhns Architecture 2520 Spring 2019 Individual Nature can be seen as both sporadic and calming. This idea of asymmetry is what gives it that feeling of being organic and constantly changing. Hillside Symmetry wants to bring an idea of creating balance and uniformity without taking away from the local landscape. Located close to Clemson’s campus off of the local Lake Issaqueena, Hillside Symmetry creates a space students can inhabit and interact with while taking site trips into the surrounding areas of Clemson’s woodlands. Hillside Symmetry consists of five cabins all sharing the same design of a central truss that acts as the main support and ground connection. With its large open balcony space each cabin has its own unique view based on its location on the hillside.

05Charleston Art Center Professor Robert Silance Architecture 2510 Fall 2018 Individual Located in North Charleston, the Charleston Art Center’s objective was to create a building for the community that could emphasize the importance of the local art work while also serving as a community center with multiple spaces for workshops. Along with these ideas in mind, the site was also located in a flood plain so the inhabitable space had to be at least 15’ above mean sea level. The form of the structure derives from three workshop spaces (primarily open) and one gallery space (closed off) wrapping around a central elevator and stairway to form a shape similar to a pinwheel.

06unCODED Professor David Lee Architecture 3500 Fall 2019 Partnership w/ Danny Jarabek All components were completed mutually Gowanus is an up and coming post-industrial neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC. Within the midst of conflict between community driven historical preservation and industrial commercial re-zoning, the neighborhood is searching to create their own identity. unCODED provides the opportunity for the people of Gowanus to redefine work through live-work programming and community-centered spaces. The building provides multiple types of work environments spanning from public collaboration spaces to private research areas to leisure settings. unCODED strives to bring people together through public courtyards that span the entire Brooklyn site, connecting to immediate boardwalk access and activity plazas along the canal.
