Birkhimer finalist for state award BY Marty Cornelison Nathan Birkhimer is a finalist for the Ohio Ag Educator of the Year Award. “I really enjoy teaching all my classes,” Birkhimer said. “I am very appreciative for being a nominee!” Nationwide, the insurance company based out of Columbus, Ohio has partnered with farm bureaus and FFA organizations around the country to create the Golden Owl Award, which recognizes agricultural educators across Ohio for their tremendous contributions to helping the next generation of agricultural leaders. Birkhimer, the Agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor for Fayetteville-Perry High School, was among the ten finalists. Birkhimer arrived at Fayetteville-Perry in December of 2015. His first class of freshmen FFA enrollees graduated last year. “I had 13 seniors graduate that I had during that time,” he recalled. Currently, there are 95 students in agriculture and FFA programs at Fayetteville-Perry. Birkhimer’s FFA program has been awarded $500 for their nomination. “I would like to use that money to upgrade some of my power tools in my Ag. Shop and purchase class-

room supplies needed for the upcoming school year for the many activities the FFA does,” said Birkhimer. There will also be an additional $3,000 awarded to the winner, which will be publicly announced at a later date. Birkhimer’s passion for the skills and his students is doubtless the key to his nomination. He relayed some of his favorite experiences over his nearly five years heading up the program for his school district: “My favorite classes to teach are AFNR (Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources) and Livestock, Selection, Nutrition, and

Management. For the AFNR class, that is the first class the new FFA members take and it is awesome to see the students learn about agriculture as a whole and gain a fondness for the FFA organization. And for the Livestock Selection Nutrition and Management, one of my favorite topics to teach is artificial insemination. Giving the students an opportunity to learn the process of A.I. with a hands-on model from RealityWorks.” On behalf of the Brown County Press: Congratulations, Nathan!
