WELCOME A warm welcome to Hungate Cottages, your quiet and peaceful home from home - and the ideal place from which to explore the many delights of Yorkshire all year round. The 11 cottages have been beautifully converted from mid-18th century farm courtyards and retain much of their original character with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams. Hungate’s setting - the old stone paths and ‘secret’ gardens - give it a ‘village within a village’ feel. Inside, the high quality furnishings and décor create a warm welcoming atmosphere. The children have a secure play area and you also have free use of Pickering’s superb swimming pool just 3 minute’s walk away. Perfect.

We had a brilliant week. We don’t want to go home! The cottage has been so

14

comfortable and we are so impressed by the standard that we are already booking for next year. As a horse riding enthusiast the hacking at Bilsdale is second to none. A wonderful cottage in a stunning unspoilt area - I can’t wait to come back.

We have had an excellent week in this lovely house which is extemely well-

equipped and very comfortable. Jack appreciated the disabled facilities - all rooms being so spacious. The Moors were beautiful, and the coast being so close was great for the children.

H ouse and location perfect for our needs. Children had a ball sledging, beach combing and swimming in the local pool – we would all happily return. Feb 2012 16

YORKSHIRE’S FINEST SIGHTS

Rievaulx The first Cistercian Abbey in northern England, Rievaulx was once the largest and most important monastery in the country. Its beautiful ruins lie in a magical quiet valley, described by an Abbott as “everywhere peace, everywhere tranquillity”.

Goathland One of the prettiest high moorland villages, Goathland is half way between Pickering and Whitby and the starting point for many moors walks. Home to “Heartbeat”.

Jorvik A journey through the reconstruction of Viking Age streets as they would have been in AD975. In York’s Jorvik Centre.

Whitby 18

Dominated by the beautiful 13C Abbey (up the 99 steps), Whitby is a traditional maritime town with cobbled streets and sandy “blue flag” beach. Captain Cook served his apprenticeship here before his Endeavour explorations – his house is now his museum.

DANBYDALE Sleeps 4 If you are looking for peace and quiet, welcome to Danbydale, pleasantly set in the quiet corner of the orchard. Danbydale used to be the stables - which explains the spacious sitting room. With separate shower room/wc and basin, this cottage is good for those who prefer not to share. And for couples who might like a four-poster bed! Downstairs: Entrance hall, cloakroom/WC. Large sitting-room with open stone fireplace and views towards the orchard. Sunny, new modern kitchen with dining area overlooking the courtyard. Upstairs: Two bedrooms, one large double with four-poster bed and one twin-bedded. New Ensuite bathroom/WC. New shower room/WC with basin. Free Broadband connection.

First visit to Yorkshire and Hungate Cottages. Wonderful time of year to visit -

were lucky enough to just catch the daffodils at Farndale (thousands of them!) Found Pickering an excellent base from which to explore Yorkshire and no shortage of places to visit whatever the weather. Definitely hope to come back again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this holiday - both the cottage and Pickering.

Beautiful cottage, so handy into town. Loved the cosiness of a real log fire. Lots to do for our small children (4 and 2) even on a rainy day as the local library had a storytime for under 5s on a Tuesday afternoon and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. March 2012 20

21

GLAISDALE Sleeps 5+1 This warm, sunny cottage looks over both the courtyard one way and the well-enclosed orchard the other. The arched area has plenty of room - perfect to sit in a big chair and read the morning newspaper in the sun, or for the children to use as a play area. Downstairs: Entrance hall. Twin-bedded room with wash basin and views towards the courtyard and orchard. Single bedroom. New bathroom/WC with over-bath shower. Free Broadband connection.

We have been coming to Pickering for 18 years and every year we find

something different to enjoy. The one thing that doesn’t change is the wonderful scenery and North Yorkshire hospitality. We’re converts. Sept 2010

A wonderful place to celebrate a birthday with family. The beauty of Hungate is that it seems a million miles from anywhere yet the town is on the doorstep in an area with something to suit everybody.

LEVISHAM Sleeps 6 Levisham is a highly attractive and bright cottage that was once part of the old hay barn. The sitting room enjoys a beautiful view over the cricket field, and the dining area looks over the old limestone courtyard. With two shower rooms and a bathroom, visitors don’t get in each other’s way in the morning. Levisham has an integral garage and parking space for another car. Downstairs: Entrance hall, cloakroom/WC, sitting-room with open fireplace. Adjoining dining area. A new fitted kitchen with French windows leading to garden. Upstairs: Master double bedroom with en-suite shower room/WC and basin. Two twin bedded rooms. Bathroom/WC. Separate shower room. Free Broadband connection.

H aving come predominantly to go mountain cycling, the integral garage was a nice touch and ideal for keeping our bikes secure. The cottage is ideally situated with all the main features of Pickering being no more than a ten minute walk away. Oct 2011 This has been our first 3-generation holiday and we decided to re-visit North

Yorkshire. The cottage surpassed our expectations and was an ideal “home” for 2 young children (3 & 1) - really comfortable and well-equppied. Pickering, too, was an excellent location and we really appreciated both the proximity of the shops and the variety of places to eat - and all within walking distance. 24

THE CARRS Sleeps 4 This is a charming ‘town’ cottage - a bit separate from the other cottages. The south facing sitting-room looks out, through lovely French windows, across the secluded patio towards The Carrs’ very own well-enclosed lawn and flower borders. Good for visitors who don’t want to share upstairs. Downstairs: New fitted kitchen with arch to dining-room. Large, south-facing sittingroom with gas ‘log-effect’ fire in stone fireplace and French windows to patio. Cloakroom/WC. Upstairs: Double bedroom with ensuite shower/WC.Twin-bedded room. Ensuite bathroom/WC with shower. Free Broadband connection.

W hat a fabulous cottage - we can’t believe that we’ve stayed in Pickering

for many years and never knew about this little treasure! A perfect base for exploring and Pickering itself is a joy to walk round. We’ve had a perfect relaxing holiday and will certainly be back. April 2011

The weather was fantastic. We have a 5 and 6 year old - we all enjoyed:

26

Dalby Forest (Bride Stones), Steam Train to Goathland, Hole of Horcum & Robin Hood’s Bay, a day trip to Scarborough, Sutton Bank - White Horse of Kilburn. Eating would recommend: Chicos for pizza, Spice4U (opposite), Trenchers Restaurant in Whitby.

YORKSHIRE’S FINEST SIGHTS

Harewood House Home to the Queen’s cousin, Harewood House is a mid 18C masterpiece set in spectacular landscaped gardens, built with West Indian sugar trade money. In the State rooms you can see Adam ceilings, Chippendale furniture and Old Master paintings.

Sinnington A sleepy picturesque village on the southern edge of the National Park, where the River Seven flows off the Moors, through Rosedale and into the Vale of Pickering. Good riverside walks upstream.

Dalby Forest The Great Yorkshire Forest comprises 8000 acres of rolling woodland, cycle and walking trails, picnic and play areas. Hungate provides a free-multi entry pass for each cottage.

Rosedale Abbey Horseshoe The Rosedale Ironstone Railway (dismantled in the 1930s) ran round the high moor horseshoe on three sides of Rosedale Abbey. Now it is a magnificent level walk with breathtaking views.

Filey 28

www.hungatecottages.co.uk / holidays@hungatecottages.co.uk

Filey, a friendly Edwardian seaside town. The award winning sandy beach is protected by Filey Brig, a haven for a variety of bird and wild life.

29

ELLERBECK Sleeps 4 Once the original servants’ rooms, Ellerbeck has grown into a really cosy cottage overlooking the upper courtyard and its own little garden. Perfect for two couples who don’t want to share facilities upstairs and just a few yards from the big arched gate that leads to the town and those superb restaurants! What’s more, Ellerbeck shares the lovely secret walled garden. Downstairs: Entrance hall. Cloakroom/WC. Sitting-room with open stone fireplace. Corner dining area with chapel-bench seating. Pine-fitted kitchen. Upstairs: Double bedroom with large new en-suite bathroom/WC, and shower. Twin-bedded room with own bathroom/WC and over-bath shower. Free Broadband connection.

We have had a lovely time here in Ellerbeck Cottage. The log fire has been

great on the chilly evenings (very cosy). We have been to some beautiful beaches (Sandsend, Whitby, Scarborough to name a few). Our dog Poppy has loved it as well.

O ur 4th stay at Hungate. Walks in the magnificent, sometimes awe-inspring scenery, followed by a return to the warm and cosy cottage. Immaculate, Ellerbeck is persuasion enough to come yet again. Sept 2010

SALTERSGATE Sleeps 7 Rebuilt in 1982 from the original stone of the old stock room, Saltersgate’s lovely large sitting room faces south and west over the upper courtyard. The new broad oak fitted kitchen enjoys the morning sun, and the dining area the evening sun. And not everyone has to share the upstairs facilities, as there is a separate shower room/wc and basin. You’ll adore the wonderful secret walled garden. Downstairs: Slate entrance hall, lovely large sitting-room with open stone fireplace and south facing bay window. Broad oak-fitted kitchen with large dining area with additional colour TV. Cloakroom/WC. A newWC with over-bath shower. Free Broadband connection.

A lovely holiday cottage with lots to do in the area for all ages. So nice not to hear any traffic once inside the black gates. Very convenient location as it is so near to all amenities. Would definitely return. The facilities and location must be very good as grandma didn’t find anything to moan about!

This is a fantastic place for a big family get-together. We had four cottages between us and have been impressed by them all. This is a beautiful setting. Thank you for all the effort and attention to detail that people have clearly put it. Nov 2011 32

33

BRANSDALE Sleeps 4 A very private cottage facing south over its own well-enclosed and secluded garden and shrub border, Bransdale has the advantage of a large sunny sitting-room from where you can watch the cricket just across the road. Downstairs: Entrance hall, cloakroom/WC, large sitting/dining room. New fitted kitchen. Upstairs: Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. A new bathroom/WC with over-bath shower. The upstairs of Bransdale used to house an early beam oil engine that drove turnip cutters and a sheaf slicer. The engine is now on display in the Ryedale Folk Museum. Free Broadband connection.

P erfect location and beautifully equipped cottage - loved breakfast/evening

drinks in the sunny garden. Very central for exploring the coast, moors and forests. (Dalby Forest was a really pleasant surprise.) Super holiday! June 2011

Fab holiday again! Playdale Farm (near Scarborough) was a big hit with our

34

two children - a good place to visit if the weather isn’t great. Filey and Whitby are both worth a visit. Mister Chips did good fish and chips in Whitby, with kids menu! Peasholm Park is good for an afternoon stroll with boating lake and ducks galore.
