Discover our six Lakes It is probably the magnificence of the lakes which attracts most of our visitors, and we are sat right in the middle of 6 of the best. Derwentwater, a short

stroll from the centre of Keswick is often called the ‘Queen of the Lakes’. This is where you can have fun on the water. A variety of sailing crafts can be hired from one of the marinas dotted around the lakeshore

and a regular launch will take you on a 50 minute trip round the lake with stops on the way so you can hop off and explore some lovely walks. Paddle, fish and play on the lakeshore, and with hotels, restaurants and cafés en-route, walking the 9 mile lake circuit is a beautiful way to spend a day. There are peaceful walks around Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater which can be extended to take in

Derwentwater, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite Lake, Loweswater.

the routes through the mountains and fells. Buttermere has very enticing cafés and pubs where you can rest awhile.

MUST DO The Honister Rambler stops in Buttermere and this bus route is one of the best journeys we can think of. Head west out of Keswick towards

Cockermouth, and you'll drive alongside

Bassenthwaite Lake

- the only true 'lake' in the Lake District and an important place for wildlife as it is home to otters and the famous Bassenthwaite Ospreys. You can follow a lakeside path all the way along the western shore but there is no access to the eastern shore except at Mirehouse, where you can visit the lakeshore and the tiny, peaceful St Bega's Church.

From the south the visitor to Keswick is greeted by spectacular views when dropping down the pass from Dunmail Raise. The huge mass of Helvellyn on the right creates the narrow valley of Thirlmere, the reservoir for Manchester. There is a 10 mile long walk round the reservoir and magnificent walks along the shoreline and in the fells and forest.

Explore our Valleys Newlands, St John’s in the Vale, Borrowdale, Buttermere and Northern Fells.

To the west of Keswick lies the peaceful and unspoilt Newlands Valley - famous for its valley walks surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, including the very popular Catbells. It’s also well known for its links with Beatrix Potter - visit the tiny white washed Newlands Church which appeared in Mrs Tiggywinkle. The villages of Portinscale, Braithwaite, Thornthwaite and Stair are picturesque and have welcoming eating places.

The scenery of the Lake District can often be seen at its best in the valleys, broad stretches of green fields and woodland with traditional villages.

MUST SEE The Lodore Falls has been popular with visitors since Victorian times, made more famous by poet Robert Southey, (1774-1843) whose poem ‘The Cataract at Lodore’ gave us the modern spelling of the fall’s name…. … dashing and flashing and splashing and clashing; And so never ending, but always descending, Sounds and motions for ever and ever are blending; All at once and all o’er, with a mighty uproar, – And this way the water comes down at Lodore.

St John’s in the Vale, home to a small hillside church well worth a visit, runs through to the village of Threlkeld. Divided by the A66 a Mining and Quarrying Museum is on one side whilst under the steep slopes of Blencathra, the village has a marvellous panorama across the mountains. Only four miles from Keswick, this has an alternative route along the old railway footpath and cycle track. Spectacular landscape lies within 4 miles from Keswick. In the Borrowdale Valley, past the impressive Lodore Falls, is the small and attractive village of Grange in Borrowdale, reached over the striking two arched bridge, a popular stopping place for picnics or a visit to a café.

Explore our Valleys

Castle Crag is one of the many special places around Keswick cared for by The National Trust. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk/walking

From here the valley narrows into the spectacular “Jaws of Borrowdale”, opening out into a wide panorama of mountains to reveal stunning views. Explore the villages of Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite and Seatoller which all have lovely pubs, cafés and hotels. Unmissable is a visit to The National Trust’s hamlet of Watendlath, taking in the famous viewpoints of Ashness Bridge and Surprise View along the way.

Buttermere Valley is surrounded by steep fellsides which lead into the wide valley floor of Lorton. A tiny church and welcoming pubs and cafés make this a good resting point. Travel here via the Honister or Newlands passes for views to live for. Discover the villages ‘Back o’Skiddaw’ for a truly Cumbrian experience. Mosedale, Mungrisdale, Hesket Newmarket (with its own micro-brewery), Caldbeck, Ireby and Uldale, all provide unending views - right to the sea in places – ending in Bassenthwaite village which is situated at the end of Bassenthwaite Lake. A wonderful drive with many attractions on the way.

Climb every Mountain

The landscape around Keswick must be one of the most dramatic in Britain...

The highest peaks in England, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw are all within easy reach but so are dozens of other mountains offering miles of glorious walking with spectacular views.

Fells & Mountains A good way to get your bearings is to take a short walk up Castlehead from Keswick. It is an excellent introduction to the town, rewarding you with a stunning panorama for very little effort. You can see the full length of Derwentwater encircled by mountains as well as a bird's eye view over the town and Bassenthwaite Lake. The whole route from the Market Square can be accomplished in less than an hour.

EXPLORE Whinlatter,

England’s only true Mountain Forest. Walks and cycle tracks, an amazing children’s outside play area, treetop Go Ape! and Segway adventures, café and a visitor centre make this a day’s outing in itself.

Photos clockwise from above: Pa volectorem entur, odi dolupta tioria dolo con rem et explibea nus eicti soluptus. Pa volectorem entur, odi dolupta tioria dolo con rem et explibea nus eicti soluptus.

Climb the Bowder Stone: Estimated at 2,000 tons, around 9m high, and 15m in diameter.

Lying to the north of Keswick the summit of Latrigg (368m) can be reached from the town by various footpaths through the woods. For those of limited mobility there is a car park to the north of the summit with only 70m of height gain to the top via a footpath suitable for buggies and some wheelchairs.

From the top there is a breathtaking view from Blencathra and the Pennines to the east, over Helvellyn and down Borrowdale towards Great End and Scafell Pike right round to the Newland Fells and Skiddaw over your shoulder to the north west, with Keswick and Derwentwater spread out at your feet.

Climbing mountains may not be an option, but you can still experience them close up when travelling through the mountain passes on the many seasonal bus routes with Mountain Goat trips, Red Squirrel tours and the Honister and Borrowdale Ramblers.

BREWERIES & DISTILLERIES

INSPIRED ART

EXPLORE BY BUS

Touring a local brewery is always a ‘must do’. We have two breweries; Jennings in Cockermouth and the Keswick Brewery for local real ale. The Lakes Distillery is new to the area, learn about spirits in a cutting edge tour to see exactly how whisky, gin and vodka are made right here in the Lake District. The Bistro is perfect for a spot of lunch after!

Artists inspired by the landscape create handmade jewellery, mosaics, sculpture and bespoke furniture which can be found in Keswick’s many galleries alongside original paintings and stunning photographs of the mountains and lakes. For more details on all of the above go to page 26 and keswick.org.

The seasonal Honister Rambler will take you up and down mountain passes whilst the Borrowdale Rambler bus (often open top) will take you right down the breathtaking Borrowdale Valley to Seatoller. Take a tour to the best spots with Mountain Goat or Alba’s Red Squirrel tours.

WALK IN THE PARK

RETAIL THERAPY

HISTORICAL HOMES

Keswick is lucky to have two beautiful parks close to the town centre. Here you can enjoy gentle strolls among manicured flower beds as well as a wealth of activities including pitch and putt and remote controlled boats in Hope Park. Fitz Park, sitting beside the River Greta also boasts an awardwinning play area for children and a brand-new BMX track as well as tennis courts and bowling greens.

There are more outdoor shops per square foot in Keswick than you’ll find anywhere else in Britain. But that’s not all we offer, there’s also an amazing variety of small independent shops as well as some high street brands. Wander through original and quirky shops for a truly local retail therapy! Find that bargain in the market – there is a twice weekly market on Thursdays and Saturday, For more details on all of the above go to page 26 and keswick.org

Keswick has a strong connection with the poets and you can visit Wordsworth House and Garden, in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, the birthplace and childhood home of romantic poet William and his sister Dorothy – and their home in Dove Cottage in Grasmere. Step inside Mirehouse and discover the strong literary connections it has had over the years. If you appreciate the outdoors and adventure then look for Millican’s Cave in Borrowdale – a truly historic home!

Accommodation CHOOSING YOUR

KESWICK TOURISM ASSOCIATION

ACCOLADES

The Association which publishes this guide is the independent local organisation promoting Keswick on Derwentwater and the Northern Lakes as a holiday destination. It represents members from all sizes and types of tourism establishments and businesses and is committed to high standards of customer satisfaction.

VisitEngland give Gold and Silver awards to hotels and guest accommodation that not only achieve their overall rating but also provide exceptional quality throughout; particularly in service and hospitality.

ACCOMMODATION Accommodation featured in this guide has been assessed to the National Quality Assurance standards – star rated schemes, assessed under our local initiative – Quality Cumbria, has signed the Keswick Tourism Quality Accommodation Charter or are Awaiting Inspection. There are two national assessing bodies, VisitEngland and the AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent, impartial assessors. Properties are given a quality rating of 1-5 stars and show the Enjoy England Quality Rose logo (VisitEngland) or AA logo. These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and quality of food. Generally, the higher the star rating, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and services offered. Star ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks. For example, a four star hotel will have greater levels of service and facilities than a four star B&B. If no assessment scheme logo is featured, a business has signed The Keswick Tourism Quality Accommodation Charter.

The AA Gold Stars are awarded to the very best of Guest Accommodation within the three, four and five star ratings. The AA give red stars to select hotels in each star grading. These are awarded ‘Inspectors’ Choice’ status. AA inspected restaurants are given Rosettes (one to five) annually for the quality of their food. Visitor attractions displaying this sign have been assessed by VisitEngland for the standard of customer care, hospitality and service as well as the standard of the toilets, shop and cafe, where applicable.

QUALITY CUMBRIA & SUPERIOR AWARD In addition to VisitEngland and AA ratings, you will also see the Quality Cumbria logo in this guide. Quality Cumbria is a local assessment initiative in partnership with VisitEngland. Although not star rated it is accredited to ensure that accommodation meets National Quality Assurance Standards and should be clean, pleasant and comfortable. For more information about Quality Cumbria call 01539 822222.

PLEASE NOTE... Entries in this guide have been compiled by Keswick Tourism Association from information supplied by its members in Summer 2015. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the information was correct at time of going to press, Keswick Tourism Association can accept no responsibility for any changes, errors and omissions, nor for any inconvenience arising thereof.

Accommodation

ACCESSIBILITY Keswick offers many opportunities for disabled visitors to enjoy all aspects of this unique county. Many accommodation providers, restaurants and attractions cater for disabled visitors and will happily accommodate specific requirements.

NATIONAL ACCESSIBLE SCHEME If you have particular mobility, visual or hearing needs look for establishments displaying the appropriate accessibility grading level. To plan the perfect stay, discuss your needs with the chosen establishment before making your booking.

ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT All accommodation will have an Access or Accessibility Statement. This is a written, clear, accurate and honest description of the facilities and services available. It will help you make an informed decision about whether that business can meet your needs.

COMPLIMENTS, COMMENTS AND CONCERNS We welcome feedback about your visit to Keswick. Should a problem arise during your stay, whenever possible, discuss it with the management of the property first. The problem may be rectified without delay. If this doesn’t work, professional advice is available from a variety of sources.

FAIRBOOKING KESWICK The FairBooking Campaign is aimed at supporting local businesses by encouraging bookings made either direct with the business or through a FairBooking website, such as www.keswick.org. The aim is to keep valuable revenue in Keswick and the North Lakes and help the local economy by minimising the amount of commission fes accommodation providers pay to the big, multi-national booking sites. FairBooking businesses pledge to offer the same or better rates than advertised on third party sites for customers who book direct*. In many circumstances they provide something extra like the best room available in that rate category, an early check-in/late check-out or a discount on a local shop, activity or attraction. Businesses agree to donate to a local good cause for each direct booking. Keswick Tourism also makes an annual donation on behalf of its website keswick.org* at the time of booking for reservations made outside 48 hours of stay. Check on keswick.org for fairbooking businessness.

For contact details please visit www.keswick.org/visitorinformation or call Keswick Tourism on 017687 75738.

The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England’s finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District’s renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here. Our rooms were recently fully refurbished, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a ‘Contemporary Twist’ perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little ‘nap’ by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner.
