Learning & Teaching

Learning at Jack Hunt School is characterised by personalised, challenging experiences that give each student the best opportunity to make progress every day. Teachers design lessons that seek to engage and enthuse all learners, adopting a range of activities in each session. Students are encouraged to use our Kite virtual learning environment to access a wide range of e-learning resources and therefore continue their progress whenever and wherever suits them best. In this way we encourage our students to

take responsibility for their own learning by applying their knowledge, being resourceful, resilient and eager to explore their chosen subjects in their own way and at their own pace. Regular checks on individual progress result in students continually reflecting on their progress and development. In addition, students have a real say in what takes place in classrooms across the school through our network of Communication Leaders who co-plan, observe and team teach lessons both in Jack Hunt School and our cluster Primary schools. Students are therefore actively engaged in creating their own learning experiences throughout their school career and we see our staff as learners who work in partnership with the young people in their care.

The Curriculum

05

We are able to cater for the diverse range of needs and interests of our students extremely well. At Key Stage 4 students are offered a broad, balanced, flexible and innovative curriculum which is enhanced by our excellent links with partner providers enabling us to extend the range of courses we offer. In addition to a strong core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, RE, PE and PDE students can choose from a vast range of academic and vocational qualifications including GCSEs, BTEC and Cambridge Nationals. These are offered at Jack Hunt School but some students may be guided to study vocational courses at Peterborough Regional College as well. All subjects make full use of our impressive ICT facilities. To assist students with their choices each is offered impartial information, advice and guidance. Throughout their studies students are offered regular booster and revision sessions outside the school day to maximise their chances of success. We also provide Saturday Schools, mainly for Year 11, throughout the school year. Learning at Key Stage 3 is based around the National Curriculum and is very much skills based with students focusing on literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. We also develop Language for Learning Skills (L4L) and Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) through our curriculum and pastoral programme. We have an extensive team of specialist support staff who work with students throughout their time at Jack Hunt School to assist with their learning needs.

Care & Support

Jack Hunt School takes great pride in its care and commitment to every member of its community. We truly value our vibrant and diverse community and are dedicated in our quest to ensure that all those who participate in the life of the school function and grow in harmony together. At Jack Hunt School we have a shared vision and provide a sense of belonging. We develop strong and positive relationships to enable all students to believe in themselves in order to maximise their potential. We encourage students to accept and take responsibility for their actions through Learning Conversations and Restorative Conferences.

In our promotion of Community Cohesion we develop students’ understanding and appreciation of others. We believe it is important for students to feel part of a community to which they can positively contribute. During Lesson 5 our bespoke SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) programme encourages the understanding of self and others. Our House Challenges give all students the opportunity to make a positive contribution to our welldeveloped charity work as a school. Staffing to support the care and guidance of students includes every student having a Personal Tutor who leads a vertical tutor group of, usually, no more than twenty students. Personal Tutors follow a programme of academic mentoring and contact with parents planned for the academic year. In addition, each of the six Houses has a Head of House and a Student Support Officer to support all the students in their House.

Transition arrangements for our Year 6s include visits to every Primary school by Jack Hunt School staff; Junior Days and Junior Evening and a one-to-one meeting with every family who is going to join us. Three hundred such meetings are held each year to ensure we meet all our families and have the necessary information to support our students. In addition we run a highly successful Transition Week every summer holiday.

in partnership with other schools locally, nationally and internationally, leading to great social and cultural benefits for our students. At Jack Hunt School we have a true International dimension to our school. We offer a wide range of languages with the further opportunity to develop these. Our Sports College provides a curriculum that is supportive and enjoyable for all. We have outstanding sports facilities with many enrichment opportunities before, during and after school. There is a strong tradition of sporting fixtures to suit all abilities with excellent support for talented performers. Our Training School status offers all staff access to high level professional development to focus upon developing learning and teaching across the school. We work closely with many teacher training providers and offer training to other schools across the city. We have worked closely with our partner Primary schools and local community to develop leadership skills for Year 5 to Year 13 through PE. Sport Leadership is used to grow student confidence, planning and organisation skills, decision making and communication skills across a range of subject based opportunities that develop the whole learner. Our Leadership programme also offers the opportunity to undertake Sports Leadership at our partner school in Shanghai, China. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a popular student choice during after school enrichment. The school offers full support to students to complete all three levels of the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
