A Levels at Bishopsford – Level 3 Art
Biology
AS & A2
AS & A2 Course Code (AS): HBIOAS301
This hands-on A Level gives you the skills and the freedom to develop your personal artistic direction. It is usually taken by those who aim to study art at university or art college, or enter employment in the arts and design industries. The course enables students to research and develop ideas and increase their artistic skills. You will be encouraged to experiment with new materials, media and techniques and expand your knowledge of other artists and cultures. Entry qualifications for this course are five Cs at GCSE and should include Art.
The study of Biology can lead to a variety of degree courses and careers, ranging from medicine and food technology to sports science and environmental research. Bioscientists have a valuable role to play in improving quality of life around the world and this A Level both reflects the diversity of the subject and provides the basic skills that will enable you to specialise in the future. Over the first year (AS Level), you will study fundamentals such as cell structure and biochemistry, moving on to look at gene technology and crop plants for example. The second year (A2 Level) covers inheritance, evolution, environment and ecosystems, and physiology. Entry requirements for this course are five GSCEs grade C or above including Double Science, where Grade B is preferred. Biology is normally studied with other science A Levels though other combinations may be possible.
A Levels at Bishopsford – Level 3 Critical Thinking
Applied ICT
AS & A2
AS & A2
The AQA AS and A2 Critical Thinking course is a focused study of logical, rational thinking and argument. It is characterised by the careful, reflective consideration of reasoned argument, and of the beliefs and claims that comprise arguments. A course leading to this qualification will present students with information, opinion and argument from a range of contexts – the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, as well as topics of general interest and concern. It will develop skills and encourage attitudes which complement their other studies across the curriculum, and help prepare them for the academic and intellectual demands of higher education, as well as future employment and life in general.
Students of Edexcel’s GCE A Level in Applied ICT will learn how to use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to carry out investigations, capture and handle data, solve problems and plan and manage projects. The AS qualification has a broad appeal and develops students’ communication and decisionmaking skills. These are harnessed to build and maintain an ePortfolio as a showcase for their achievements.
From newspaper editorials to TV debates, wherever students encounter asserted opinion, they will possess the ability to swiftly and rationally deconstruct arguments, drawing logical conclusions about the validity thereof and pose further questions to be answered in the search for knowledge and truth. This course develops thinking skills that are of great importance in further academic study, whether it be in science or the arts, and in particular in the study of law, politics, and philosophy.
English Language and Literature AS & A2 What makes English language and Literature special? You have the ability to use 50,000 words and know the 1,000 rules of grammar. You already know how to communicate and know how to adapt the way you speak for different situations. English Language and Literature allows you the opportunity to explore English and gives you the tools to manipulate language to your own advantage. This is a challenging yet accessible course. It successfully bridges the gap between GCSE and higher education. At AS level you will develop skills for literary analysis looking at stylistic, linguistic issues. This course is an opportunity to develop your ability to analyse written and spoken language using a literary and linguistic approach. You will be able to use your knowledge about the features of language to produce your own writing. Additionally you will study novels, poetry and drama from a range of eras and cultures, with the focus being on how the writer uses language in their work. If you have an interest in studying a variety of literature and language this course is for you.
A Level ICT encourages students to acquire a range of important and transferable skills: the capacity for thinking creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically; the skills to work collaboratively; the ability to apply skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT in a range of contexts to solve problems; an understanding of the consequences of using ICT on individuals, organisations and society and of social, legal, ethical and other considerations on the use of ICT; an awareness of emerging technologies and an appreciation of the potential impact these may have on individuals, organisations and society. A qualification in ICT will help prepare students for a world in which technological and information literacy skills are seen as essential. Industry, Business, Communications and Media would all offer attractive careers for ICT students. ICT is offered by universities either as a subject in its own right or in combination with a wide range of subjects, for example: • Computer Science; • Game Design; • IT & Psychology; • IT & Business; • IT & Multimedia. Few occupations or workplaces do not make use of Information and Communication Technology today and most are likely to change further as ICT becomes more pervasive. AS is assessed with two pieces of coursework and one exam in the Summer term. A2 will offer a similar mix but can be negotiated depending on units chosen.
Challenging all to achieve, respect & excel  11
Maths AS & A2 A Level Maths is a highly valued qualification and a requirement for many university courses and careers in areas such as science, engineering, computing and accounting. This course is suitable for those who wish to develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes. Students will be expected to reason logically, extend their range of mathematical skills and techniques and apply these to more difficult, unstructured problems. All students will study four core units (C1, C2, C3 & C4) plus two applications units from either Mechanics or Statistics (M1, M2, S1, and S2). For the AS qualification students must study C1 and C2 and either M1 or S1. The four core units will cover topics such as coordinate geometry, sequences, differentiation, integration, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms and vectors. The Mechanics units will include mathematical models in mechanics, vectors in mechanics and kinematics. The Statistics units will cover mathematical models in probability and statistics, probability, correlation and regression as well as the Normal, Binomial and Poisson distributions.
Media Studies AS & A2 Do you want to develop your interest and understanding of the media? This A Level is the ideal first step if you are thinking of degree study or a career in the communication and media industries. The first year (AS Level) deals with a range of media including newspapers, TV and the internet and addresses issue such as representation and what the media means to us. You will have a chance to be involved in producing media projects, including videos where you will use digital cameras and editing. The second year (A2 Level) focuses on media as industries and the impact of globalisation, the internet and digital technology. Students will look closely at representation of ethnicity, gender, society and morality and have the opportunity to produce a long essay on a subject of their choice. Media Studies is compatible with any other subject, particularly English, Sociology, Psychology and Business Studies. This A Level equips you well for degree-level study in media, arts or humanities courses and careers in areas such as journalism, leisure, research and media industries. It gives you analytical and critical skills useful in any subject and career.
Music AS & A2 The GCE Music course is intended to be stimulating and enriching for students and provides an excellent basis for lifelong learning and for higher education courses in music. At both Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and A2 levels, students experience all three main musical disciplines of performing, composing, and listening and understanding. Students will develop performance skills (solo and/or ensemble), compose music and learn about harmony (the basics at AS and stylistic studies at A2). The full GCE course (AS plus A2) is excellent preparation for higher education courses in music, but is equally valuable for non-specialists as a second or third area of study. The AS units alone can offer a broad and satisfying experience for those who want to conclude their musical studies at this point. Work is grouped into three areas of study: instrumental music, vocal music and applied music.
Psychology AS & A2 Course Code (AS): HPSYAS301 Psychology, the study of social and individual behaviour, is useful for a wide range of future careers, particularly in health and social care, education, research and business. Our A Level syllabus covers all the major areas of psychology. Units studied include social psychology, developmental psychology and perspectives and research methods. It provides a thorough introduction to psychological theory and practice and will help you develop skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation. The nature of psychological study means that it combines well with both sciences and humanities at A Level. It is therefore suitable for progression on to a wide variety of careers and degree courses.

Students will spend their first year understanding and offering critiques on the machinations of the English legal system including the operation of the police and Criminal Evidence Act, the court system and legal professionals at work. Students also learn about the many sources of law and will gain skills for Statutory Interpretation and a grounding in European law. This provides a foundation for the second year where an in depth study of Tort Law is made. Students can expect visits to key London courts, Parliament, the Royal Institute of Psychiatry and debates such as Boris Johnson’s meetings on tackling youth crime during their course at South Thames College. Entry qualifications are standard and Grade B in English is preferred.
