Clevelands Preparatory School A GEMS SCHOOL

Striving for Excellence

By developing a love of learning and a caring attitude, we prepare children for their next steps. Welcome to Clevelands Nursery and Preparatory School, an independent day school for boys and girls aged from 2¾ to eleven. We provide a high-quality and well-rounded education through the combination of a stimulating curriculum, excellent facilities and dedicated staff. Our pupils’ record of success in entry to the leading senior schools makes Clevelands one of the most respected schools in the Greater Manchester area. Proud as we are of this academic

achievement, we are also dedicated to providing as many opportunities as possible to develop character, confidence and skills through sporting and artistic activities. Located in a beautiful woodland setting, the school has a listed, Victorian house with modern, purpose-built accommodation around it. The school motto – Labore et Honore (by labour and honour) – reflects our ethos: we expect our children to work hard and we foster

Building firm foundations Exciting a child’s naturally inquisitive mind is the key to successful learning. We believe that learning should be fun and purposeful, gradually developing a child’s knowledge, problem-solving skills and independence. Located in the specially converted coach house and stables, Clevelands Nursery is an integral part of the school. Caring for children aged between two years nine months and four years, our staff provide a secure, homely atmosphere and stimulating, multi-sensory activities. Children are encouraged to develop their social skills, communication and imagination, with parents regularly updated on these achievements.

The Nursery works closely with the Pre-Preparatory Department to ensure a seamless transition for children into the school. Until the end of the Reception year, the curriculum remains based on the Early Years Foundation Stage. A lively classroom environment fosters creativity and expression, with pupils becoming active learners through observation, exploration and investigation. During these formative years, comparatively small class sizes and experienced teachers ensure that secure foundations are laid in literacy, numeracy, science and ICT. Progress is closely monitored and staff work hard to develop each child’s individual talents, with effort rewarded and success celebrated.

Through a challenging curriculum and specialist teaching, we inspire pupils to become self-starters. Combining the best of the National Curriculum with our own educational programme, the Clevelands curriculum enables each child to realise his or her potential. Our highly qualified teachers actively develop pupils’ problem-solving and decision-making skills, helping them become confident learners with a strong sense of self. In the Preparatory Department, the emphasis on sound knowledge in core academic subjects continues, and as pupils progress through the school they receive increasing levels of specialist teaching in subjects such as Music, PE, French and Art. All pupils work with a variety of media in art classes, learn to play the recorder from Year 3 and participate in a wide range of sports. We make the most of our fabulous facilities including a wildlife area and pond, science laboratory, dance and

drama studio, art room, sports hall, netball court, football pitch, library and computer suite. ICT plays a key role across the curriculum, with interactive whiteboards used extensively. Monthly assessment through a mix of internal and external tests allows progress to be closely monitored, with the most able pupils given extra challenge. A specialised English and Maths curriculum is delivered to all pupils in Years 5 and 6, preparing them for transition to senior school. An ‘open door’ policy allows pupils, parents and staff to raise any issues directly with the head teacher. The school publishes a weekly newsletter and queries can be raised at the termly parents’ forum. As well as the monthly test results for pupils in Year 1 and above, all parents receive regular reports on their child’s progress.

Providing enrichment and support The Clevelands education extends beyond the classroom and is underpinned by exceptional pastoral care. The ethos of the school is founded on kindness to others and a sense of belonging to the Clevelands family. Pastoral care, identified as ‘outstanding’ by ISI inspectors, plays a vital role in the school’s success, with each pupil individually valued and cared for. Assemblies and our house system allow children of different ages to mix and work collectively. Inter-house championships, school productions, weekly certificates of merit and annual prizes, encourage pupils to give their best in all they do. The children’s wellbeing is supported by sufficient physical activity and nutritious meals. To help working parents, the school provides an extended day – from 7.45 am until 5.45 pm – as well as an exclusive holiday club out of term time.

We balance our high academic standards with a broad range of extra-curricular activities. Children can take part in lunchtime and after-school clubs ranging from cross-country running to street dance. Musical abilities are encouraged through the school choir – which sings at the annual Bolton Music Festival – the orchestra, which performs termly concerts, and peripatetic teachers. Children are encouraged to take part in the many events that we stage, to which parents are invited. We encourage team and individual competitiveness through numerous sporting fixtures with other schools, including Bolton Schools’ Swimming Gala. Educational visits and residential trips play a vital role in broadening the children’s horizons. They experience

museums, galleries, theatres and parks and the annual ski trip for Years 4-6 is a highlight. Residential adventure courses for Years 4 and 6 feature activities such as orienteering, raft building and abseiling, which boost their resourcefulness and develops teamwork. In addition, a number of organisations and individuals visit the school to inform the children of their work. Children are encourage to take responsibility within the school and many get involved in charity fundraising. Children in Years 3 to 6 may be elected by their peers to serve on the school council and they relish the opportunity to be involved in the running of the school.
