Sherborne House School A GEMS SCHOOL

Knowledge, creativity and confidence

Our mission Sherborne House School aspires to provide a well-balanced and wideranging education within a happy and stimulating atmosphere. Every child and each of their achievements is valued, be it academic, sporting, musical, artistic or creative. Our children are encouraged to relish and explore every opportunity, and to extend fully their individual talents and interests. We wish to nurture independence and self-confidence, combined with tolerance of the needs, beliefs and attitudes of others. We aim to prepare our children for an exciting future, so that they will leave Sherborne House confidently accepting life’s challenges in a spirit of determination and adventure.

Through an exciting education and a caring ethos, we inspire a love of learning that equips children for life. Welcome to Sherborne House School, a co-educational and interdenominational day school for children aged three to eleven years. Established in 1933, the school is set in four acres of attractive grounds within a highly sought-after residential area between Southampton and Winchester. We are a preparatory school in the true sense of the word, equipping children with the knowledge and skills they need for senior school and beyond.

With high expectations in terms of effort and behaviour, we have an excellent record of achievement in national tests, scholarships and entry to leading independent and state schools. Proud as we are of this success, we are committed to enabling every child to fulfil their potential, whatever their level of ability. Our stimulating curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for academic, sporting and artistic development, as well as physical, cultural and spiritual

growth. Small class sizes ensure that our highly qualified teachers know each child extremely well. We are a happy and supportive community, where the traditional values of respect and courtesy are combined with a modern outlook on our multicultural world. We warmly invite you to visit the school to experience for yourself its vibrant learning environment and family atmosphere.

Creating active learners We use children’s natural curiosity about the world around them to engage them in dynamic learning.

2 From the age of three when they join our Nursery and as they progress through Reception and the PrePreparatory department, our children are provided with a stimulating and enjoyable start to their education in a happy and caring setting. Our Nursery and Reception classes are housed in purpose-built and wellresourced rooms, each with an outdoor play area. Following the curriculum of the Early Years Foundation Stage, the children learn through fun, play-based activities that are designed to develop their

communication skills, confidence and consideration for others. The programme is enriched by extensive use of the natural resources within the school’s spacious grounds and by additional learning opportunities, including French. Children are encouraged to take pride in their achievements, which are celebrated with their peers, teachers and parents. In Pre-Prep (ages 5 to 7), the programme provides interest and challenge, with studies tailored to the needs of every child. Pupils are taught in bright and modern classrooms, mainly by their

form tutor but with specialist teaching in French, Music and PE. Active participation through exploration and investigation extends their knowledge, develops their problem-solving skills and boosts their self-esteem. Interactive whiteboards throughout the school and a dedicated computer suite allow ICT to enhance all aspects of learning. Children are also able to benefit from our science studio, music room and well-stocked library.

Developing independent thinkers High expectations and specialist teaching provide challenge and spark ambition in our older pupils. As they progress through the Preparatory department from age 7 to 11, pupils are encouraged to become more imaginative, inventive and independent. Class sizes remain small, ensuring that each child benefits from individual attention. Based on the National Curriculum, our enhanced programme is designed to offer a broad and balanced education, delivered by experienced subject specialists. An emphasis on English and mathematics ensures that pupils have a firm grasp of these core subjects, with setting in maths from Year 3 allowing each child to progress at the right pace. ICT plays a key role in every area of learning, while music, drama, art and sport all continue to feature strongly. Form tutors monitor each child’s progress closely. Our enrichment programme ensures that the more able pupils are

stretched, while those finding study more challenging – including any pupils for whom English is an additional language – receive specialist support from a qualified teacher and assistant. Year 6 pupils are carefully prepared for senior school entrance exams and, where appropriate, encouraged to apply for scholarships. We believe in working in partnership with parents to ensure the best possible education. Homework begins in Reception, with the time required gradually increasing with age but always leaving scope for hobbies and family life. Three reports and consultations each year ensure that parents are well informed of their child’s academic and personal progress. In addition, each form has a parent representative, we publish regular newsletters and the school has a dedicated parents’ drop-in area.

Caring for one another Committed to developing the whole child, we provide many extra-curricular opportunities and exceptional pastoral care. Sherborne House offers an extended day from 7.45 am to 6.00 pm and children are encouraged to participate in a variety of after-school clubs. With three choirs, an orchestra and a choice of ensembles, we offer a wealth of musical opportunities and are proud to have achieved the ‘Sing Up’ Platinum Award. Inter-school and inter-house fixtures take place in a wide range of sports and we stage many drama performances, concerts and assembly presentations, to which parents are invited.

Children enjoy visits to theatre productions, museums and places of interest. We also foster links with the local community, inviting organisations and individuals to come and talk about their work and interests. Children participate in residential trips, with outdoor pursuits courses enhancing teamwork, leadership and resilience for those in years 4 and 5 and the annual visit to France broadening the horizons of year 6 children. Form tutors provide pastoral care, being ready to listen and helping children to feel secure and happy. Daily assemblies and our house system allow pupils of

different ages to mix together, adding to the school’s family feel. House points, awarded for positive contributions to all aspects of school life, promote hard work, respect and kindness. Pupils relish the opportunity to take positions of responsibility as school council representatives and prefects. They raise money for charities – including the ‘Handshake to Kware’ project in support of a school in Kenya – with enthusiasm and compassion. We provide personal, social and health education for all children and promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and nutritious meals.
