Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School
“ Sir William Borlase’s Sixth form is outstanding. Standards are well above average at AS and A level and the achievement of both boys and girls is excellent.” Ofsted
Welcome The Sixth form at Sir William Borlase’s is the most vibrant, exciting and rewarding educational community I have known. We are proud of the fact that this has also been recognized by Ofsted, who gave our Sixth form an overall Outstanding rating. The quality of our Sixth form draws upon four areas of strength: academic achievement, extra-curricular enrichment, pastoral care and excellent specialist facilities. Most of all we draw strength from our people - our staff and our pupils. I extend the warmest possible invitation to you to come and visit us and meet the people who make this place what it is. I hope you will agree with me that Borlase is an exciting place for Sixth form study. Dr Peter Holding, Headmaster
Curriculum Sixth form students at Sir William Borlase’s are offered an extraordinarily broad and challenging curriculum centred on a range of 24 different AS and A2 level subjects. These are supplemented by additional qualifications within our Performing Arts specialist areas such as Music Technology and Technical Theatre and by a rich range of educational visits. In a typical year students from our Sixth form might lead a dance tour to Budapest, spend two weeks on work experience in Germany, attend an English conference in London, go on tour with an orchestra to Italy, join a sports tour to Malta and plan a World Challenge expedition to Honduras. Above all, Sixth form students benefit from high quality tuition from our dedicated teaching staff and go on to achieve exceptional academic results across every academic discipline.
Performing Arts As a Specialist School for the Performing Arts we provide our students with exceptional opportunities to participate in music, dance and drama of the highest standards. Sixth formers lead and direct many student productions, and there are frequent workshops with outside organisations, from internationally recognized groups, such as Rambert Dance to our own in-house production company. Recent students have gone on to study the Performing Arts in top colleges such as Trinity and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Our elite dance company performs at the Wycombe Swan and other local theatres and our chamber orchestra attracts the best musicians from around the county.
“ Students play an extremely active part in the wider life of the school and community, as a result of the wide range of opportunities provided. The range of sports and arts activities is exceptional. Ofsted
Enrichment Almost all Borlasians have talents outside of the classroom. Borlase encourages and facilitates them to develop their myriad of gifts and skills to the highest possible levels. Every year senior Borlasians excel on a national and international level. In the arts this has included membership in the National Youth Orchestra, Theatre, Musical Theatre, Ballet and Choir. Some Borlasians have represented Great Britain in rowing, hockey and other sports, while others participate in competitions ranging from the Maths Challenge to the Engineering Education scheme. All of our Sixth formers also contribute to the local and wider community, through the Community Sports Leaders Award programme, Arts Award, Young Enterprise, World Challenge expeditions and Sixth form work experience placements, while closer to home our Sixth formers are instrumental in organizing and running countless House events.
Pupil support There is carefully structured support and guidance running throughout the Sixth form years. The Sixth form team includes a Head of Key Stage, full time Learning Mentor and a dedicated careers advisor as well as a team of Sixth form tutors. Every student participates in a key skills programme and each receives detailed advice and guidance relating to future careers and university admissions. As a result students settle very quickly into Sixth form life, whether they join us from outside or from our own lower school. Parents are encouraged to continue to play an active role in supporting and guiding their Sixth form children and receive regular updates on their progress.
“ The school’s friendly, supportive ethos enables students to flourish as independent learners and responsible citizens.” Ofsted
“ Teaching is outstanding. Teachers have excellent subject knowledge, set clear objectives, utilize a wide variety of resources and challenge students to achieve their best. Ofsted
