Find Your Future A unique feature of UTCN is Find Your Future (FYF).
• Property task set by NPS • Property Consultants - students took the roles Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Engineer and Project Manager and designed a housing development including scaled model • Software engineering and app development task sponsored by Aviva • Designing and building CANSATs and then launching them via a rocket with Raptor
As the name suggests, FYF will help you: • Find a career that is suitable for you • Build key employability skills like teamwork, leadership and presentational skills • Make industry contacts to help you find your future The challenges vary from design tasks to making prototype solutions which can, in some cases, be adopted by the employer. You will get the chance to work on projects in various key sectors: Automotive, Aviation, Health Science, Marine, Medical, Construction, Energy, Tech and many more. Employers often reward students with prizes for the best ideas or best team, and these challenges have led to offers of work experience and excellent apprenticeships (including degree level). We work hard to understand what employers are looking for. This is your opportunity to create a C.V. that sets you apart. FYF is a vital and compulsory part of the curriculum and takes place every Wednesday morning. A few examples include: • Designing and prototyping an electric vehicle charging point with Warren Services • Planning and presenting a new bridge building for Norwich with Create Norwich • Wind Energy task using 3D technology sponsored by Vattenfall • Modifying and racing an electric powered race car with Greenpower
Work experience All Sixth Form courses comprise a work experience placement. The purpose is to build experience that will be valuable for future employment or study. Many students discover their future employer whilst demonstrating their ability in the workplace. Your course tutors along with the UTCN Work Experience Coordinator will work with you to identify suitable opportunities for you to pursue during this time.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
The UTCN Sixth Form offers fantastic opportunities, not just to gain good technical qualifications, but there are also a wide range of competitions and challenges that you can participate in. These team based challenges provide you with a chance to apply your technical and business skills to problem solving tasks that have been devised by industry. Here are just some of the projects that our Sixth Form students participate in:
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offers students an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development. It is a personal challenge available to all, not a competition against others. Completion of the award is voluntary.
F1 in Schools
• Volunteering – to encourage service to individuals and to the community
This national and international competition allows teams to design, produce and market a model F1 vehicle that meets stringent regulations, just like the real F1 setup. The teams take their models powered by CO2 canisters and race them against competitors.
• Expedition – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery
The UTCN Navy Boat Challenge Teams design and manufacture a marine craft that is capable of retrieving lost cargo, either floating, on land or from the sea bed. This will often involve the design of robotics, winches, conveyors as well as the boat drive systems.

UTCN offers students in Year 12 the opportunity to undertake the Silver Award level which consists of the following sections:
• Skills – to encourage the development of personal interests, hobbies and social and practical skills • Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity Expeditions are organised by UTCN each year and students attend regular training sessions at school in order to complete the Expedition Section. The remaining sections are completed by students in their own time. UTCN staff support students as they progress through the award, however a large amount of responsibility lies with the student. It is not necessary to have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme previously, students can begin the Silver Award level as a direct entrant. The Silver Award can be completed in as little as 12 months. After completion of the Silver Award level, students are able to progress to the Gold Award level and will continue to receive support from UTCN with its completion.

Engineering: T Level Foundation Year T Levels are new qualifications introduced to provide technical routes for students pursuing a career in a specific sector of industry. The T Level Foundation Year is aimed at students who do not meet the entry criteria for the T Level in Engineering but still wish to progress to this in 2023. Students will complete the Foundation Year to progress to the T Level qualification. The course comprises of: • OCR Level 2 Technical Diploma in Engineering • Employer Led Projects • Work Experience • Technical Competitions • GCSE English and/or Maths The technical study element of this course will ensure you have a sound background in mechanical and electrical engineering concepts as well as offering the chance for you to apply these concepts in a range of practical tasks. You will gain knowledge and skills in bench fitting, machining, CAD, electrical circuit design and assembly, plus many more.
Our employer liaison and careers staff will guide and support you in obtaining meaningful work experience to help you develop all important employability skills. We also work directly with a range of employers to help bring industry into the classroom via technical challenges throughout the year. You will have the opportunity to work in a team to compete in one of the technical competitions, such the Navy Challenge or F1 in Schools. This is a fun way of helping you develop team working and collaborative skills, alongside the technical aspects of the course. Where your grades have fallen short of the entry requirements into the Level 3 T Level, in the foundation programme we will provide you with excellent levels of support to guide you through the exam retake process. This support will be tightly focused and will see you working in a small group with an expert teacher.
Who is the T Level Foundation Year for?

Content Summary This programme is equivalent to three A Levels and can provide access into either apprenticeships or university courses. It is intended to provide a broad range of knowledge, skills, and experiences to allow you to progress into your chosen specialist area of engineering. Students selecting this course will have a clear determination and passion for the subject. Engineering students will need high levels of resilience to keep up with the challenge of the coursework assessed elements, and effective time management and independent study skills to achieve in the examined elements. The T Level programme includes the following compulsory elements. Technical Qualification (TQ), which includes: • Engineering Core Learning • Industrial Project • Occupational Specialist Related Coursework • Industry placement with an employer up to 45 days

In Year One you will complete the core learning element, topics will include:
• Electrical and Mechanical Simulation • Business for Engineering and Project Management You will also apply your core learning to solve an industry set project. In Year Two you will select your occupational pathway within your chosen T Level, allowing you to specialise by completing coursework tasks related to your specialist area.
What can I expect in lessons? From day one, the sheer range of engineering topics and sectors addressed in this course will keep you engaged and busy. This is a two year course where each lesson will provide you with a new challenge, initially focused on developing basic knowledge and skills, all of which start to come together and allow you to apply them to industrial contexts and problem solving projects and coursework.

Content Summary All students will develop a general understanding of health and science: • Working within the health and science sector • Health, safety and environmental regulations • Managing information and data • Principles of good scientific and clinical practice • Core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology They will also learn about topics specific to health including: • Understanding the science sector • Further science knowledge, including cell cycle and cellular respiration, enzyme and protein structure, pathogens, classification of biological materials, kinetic changes and relevant analytical techniques • Scientific methodology • Experimental equipment and techniques • Ethics of science

A Level Computer Science Minimum entry criteria GCSE Computer Science is not required but an aptitude test must be taken if you are not currently studying GCSE computing.
Content Summary The A Level course is split into two different units over two academic years. The first two units are examined and are worth 40% each, whilst the third unit is a programming project worth 20%.
The qualification, above all else, will be relevant to the modern and changing world of technology. There will be a focus on programming and an emphasise on the importance of computational thinking as a discipline. With computational thinking at its core, the course will help students to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand machine intelligence. The course will also enable students the opportunity to apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems in an exciting and engaging manner.
The units will include: • Computer Systems • The Fetch-Decode-Execute Cycle and its effects on different registers • How different input, output and storage devices can be applied to the solution of different problems • Network security and threats, use of firewalls, proxies and encryption • Algorithms and Programming • Writing and following complex algorithms • Use of an IDE to develop/debug a program • Modularity, functions and procedures, parameter passing by value and by reference • Programming Project - Candidates select their own user-driven problem of an appropriate size and complexity to solve. • Problem identification • Designing a solution • Iterative development process • Testing to inform development • Evaluating the success of the solution
What can I expect in lessons? Computer Science is delivered by two experienced practitioners who both specialise in different areas of computing. Expect lessons to be engaging and involve an extensive amount of problem solving activities.

A Level Chemistry Minimum entry criteria GCSE Chemistry Grade 6 or 6,6 in Combined Science. In addition, a Grade 5 in Mathematics is required and a Grade 6 is desirable.
Content Summary Chemistry is everywhere, helping us explain the processes that allow life to occur to enabling the construction of space age materials. Chemistry is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and how they alter the world around us. Having A Level Chemistry is an essential qualification for students wishing to study a diverse range of courses at University including Medicine, Dentistry, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Veterinary Science and also for careers such as Accountancy, Patent Attorneys, and environmental consultancy. You will study the three main aspects of chemistry: • Physical chemistry: the how and why reactions take place • Organic chemistry: the study of carbon chemistry, including how to identify functional groups and their role in life • Inorganic chemistry: focuses on the trends and patterns present in chemistry, understanding these allows you to make predictions about the unknowns and develop problem solving skills
What can I expect in lessons? Lesson content varies depending on the course topic. Expect to spend around 25% of your time in practical lessons and 75% in theoretical lessons. Lessons are interactive and involve group work as well as individual learning time. Due to the nature of chemistry some of most important skills you can do is to ask questions and challenge your own concepts of the world around you.

Level 3 Engineering (Technical Extended Certificate)
Minimum entry criteria No additional entry criteria. You do not need to have studied engineering previously but it will be valuable if you have.
Content Summary Study units include: • Applied Engineering, Science and Mathematics • Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing • Mechanical and Electrical Principles Equivalent in size to one A Level, this qualification is available to those students considering the A Level Plus programme. The course is designed to complement your academic study by providing you with a solid base of knowledge and skills in engineering. The most common progression routes from this course would include university or apprenticeship programmes.
What can I expect in lessons? Students working on the extended certificate course will receive a rich and varied engineering experience, along the way developing a blend of theoretical and practical skills. You will study a number of separate engineering units delivered over two years, which will keep you busy and motivated whilst opening your eyes to the huge range of potential engineering pathways.

A Level Mathematics Minimum entry criteria Grade 6 GCSE Mathematics is required, Grade 7 or higher is desirable.
Content Summary Mathematics A Level is for both those who find the subject enjoyable and interesting but also for those who wish to use it to facilitate their studies and interest in other subjects. Mathematics is a powerful and beautiful subject that teaches students new skills and problem solving techniques that can be used in both Mathematics and in the pursuit of many careers. The course is broken down into the study of Pure Mathematics which includes algebra, calculus, trigonometry and many other challenging and interesting areas of Mathematics. Students also study the applications of Mathematics through Statistics and Mechanics; these areas are especially useful for those students looking to progress in the world of Engineering, Computing, Architecture, Finance and Business.
What can I expect in lessons? Mathematics is taught in a variety of ways including investigations, problem solving and applications. Lessons are designed to be interesting, progressive and challenging for all students. Students can expect lessons to include the use of technology, mechanical demonstrations and real-life scenarios throughout the course.

A Level Physics Minimum entry criteria GCSE Physics Grade 6 or 6,6 in Combined Science. In addition, a Grade 5 in Mathematics is required with a Grade 6 strongly preferable.
Content Summary Physics is the most fundamental science. It involves the study of the universe and its origins, and how matter behaves through space and time, from the very large to the very small. It seeks to explain how the physical world operates through Laws and the concepts of forces and energy. Having A Level Physics will open up the doors to a great variety of courses at University including Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Physics and Architecture. It is also looked upon favourably for those wishing to enter business and finance as the analytical and problem solving skills you develop are well sought after. • Foundations of physics: dimensional analysis with scalars and vectors • Forces and motion: Newton’s Laws, projectile motion, work energy and power, car safety and material properties • Electrons, waves, and photons: Kirchoff’s Laws, quantum physics, wave phenomena, and electrical circuits • Newtonian world and astrophysics: field forces including gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, higher level mechanics and cosmology • Particles and medical physics: nuclear physics and applied physics in medicine
What can I expect in lessons? Certain sections of the course will require more practical work than others but you can expect to spend around 75% of your time in theoretical lessons and 25% of your time in practical lessons. Questioning in Physics is essential to improve understanding and for this reason, group work is encouraged but you will also need to be a confident independent learner. Challenging yourself and each other is the best way to improve your grasp of a new concept.

Year 12 & 13 dress code Our Uniform supplier is Birds of Dereham, the UTCN uniform is designed to be smart and cost effective. Further clarification on our uniform can be found on our website under uniform policy. UTCN insists on high standards of personal presentation. Our Uniform and Appearance policy has been developed with our governing body of employers to prepare students for the world of work. All prospective students and their parents should ensure that they are able to adhere to the UTCN Uniform and Appearance Policy as it is strictly enforced. Case study Jovita Beeston I’m an Engineering Technician Apprentice for Scottish Power Renewables and I am currently training to maintain offshore wind turbines. So far, I have taken part in survival training and carried out practical work on pneumatic and hydraulic rigs. The reason I decided to move to UTCN in Year 10 was because I wanted to experience a different environment and something that was more exciting than my high school experience. I then stayed on for the Sixth Form because, from my experience at UTCN, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in engineering.
Subjects Studied At UTCN Level 3 Engineering - Programme
The opportunities in engineering are fabulous! And I want to be a role model to all young people thinking about a career in this sector. I feel especially proud to be a woman working in engineering. From my time at UTCN, I feel like I have been given a lot of good experiences. I certainly found out about the real working environment earlier than most 18-year-olds. My biggest piece of advice to the current Year 11s would be to take advantages of all the opportunities that are presented to you. Reflecting on my time at UTCN, I now realise how fortunate I was to be able to experience the opportunities I had.

All these passes can be used during the weekends and holidays. Tickets can be purchased online, as a mobile “M” ticket or from the First Travel shop on Castle Meadow. As well as covering the journey into Norwich these passes can also be used on the UTCN contract bus.
