Autumn 2012 Volume 3, Issue 2
Autumn Tip As you move from summer, living outside your home to increased inside living for the winter, consider your transition from interior to exterior spaces. Some of the most dramatic work we have done involved porches, decks, mudrooms, and other transition spaces. They may be small but not so their impact.
Covered porch addition is an outdoor oasis This home already had a great south east exposure patio area, but at times, it was too sunny and exposed. The owners envisioned a canopy structure that would provide shade from the high sun, but not block too much daylight from the adjacent room. A form sympathetic to the house, gives the appearance that "it was always there". That's what we like to hear!
Old country charm of century home remains intact with new addition.
As framing begins, the new house profile emerges.
The newly shaded area becomes an outdoor room.
Heritage
The interior is bright and inviting.
So many building forms have been perfected over time that I find it incredibly rewarding to wander old homes and look for ways to enhance our work. Cottonwood Mansion is a good regional example. Italianate in style and abounding with wonderful detailing and craftsmanship, it is a fantastic example of why we love old houses.
The exterior of the finished addition.
choosing a complimentary exterior finish, board and batten, to let the brick of the old house sing. There are ample windows for natural light and summer breezes, and a cathedral ceiling to add some volume to the space. The clients couldn't be happier.

Large windows maintain the look of the original house.
“Rory and Build surpassed our
expectations and gave us our dream while preserving the historic integrity
Just outside the city limits, this wonderful old storey-and-a-half farmhouse was in want of a casual living space, one that would be a transition space from outside to inside. A form evolved that mimics the overall shape of the house while definitely playing second fiddle to the original structure. This was accomplished with a modest footprint and
of our home and working within our budget. Care and attention were given to every detail. It couldn't be better.

Quite simply, we love it.
The project actually spilled over into some interior work, as well as improvements to an existing carriage house.
