DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO The first Jews in the Congo were Eastern European immigrants from Romania and Poland. Within the next few years, more Jewish immigrants arrived from South Africa. In 1911, Sephardi Jews from the Island of Rhodes in what is now Greece (then part of the Ottoman Empire) arrived. The same year a Jewish community center was established named the Communauté du Congo Belge et du Ruanda-Urundi. A synagogue was built in Élisabethville (now Lubumbashi) in 1930. Today, the primary Jewish community is located in the capital city of Kinshasa, which is also the regional base and headquarters office of Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa who estab-

In addition to the Community Synagogue, afternoon Talmud Torah for children, adult education, etc., Chabad Lubavitch recently established Yeshivas Ohel Moshe Chabad Academy for Higher Jewish Learning with 10 Rabbinical students from New York who rotate on a yearly basis. Together with the Jewish community, our aim is to provide a vibrant Jewish community center and programs for the entire community with diverse activities and programs where all spectrums of a Jewish life can be met.

GABON Gabon is a country in west central Africa sharing borders with the Gulf of Guinea to the west, Equatorial Guinea to the northwest, and Cameroon to the north, with the Republic of the Congo curving around the east and south. The small population density together with abundant natural resources and foreign private investment have helped make Gabon one of the most prosperous countries in the region. Gabon’s Jewish community is mainly in Libreville. Chabad-Lubavitch

of

Central Africa, based in Kinshasa, D.R.C. is the primary address for Gabonese Jewry, and regularly sends Rabbinical students and married couples as emissaries to help the local community with their Jewish Holiday programs, services and life-cycle events such a Brit Milah, Bar Mitzvah, Jewish burial, etc. The Jewish expatriates benefit from our weekly emails and Holiday bulletins as well as our new online Adult and Children Education system.

Celebrating 24 years of brightening the Sub Saharan continent with the lights of Torah and Mitzvot

KENYA The Jewish community in Kenya dates back to the early 1900’’s when, in 1903, the British colonial secretary Joseph Chamberlain offered the Zionists a part of the territory in Kenya and Uganda known as the Uganda Program for their own autonomous country at the Sixth Zionist Congress. In 1913, there were 20 Jewish families living in Kenya. Most resided in Nairobi. Since 1933 there has been an immigration of Jews from Germany to Kenya/Uganda. When the Holocaust ended, some Jews started to immigrate to Kenya. The Jewish community known as the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation also built a synagogue there. In 1963, when Kenya became independent and Israel opened an Embassy in Nairobi, the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation took on a new lease of life. Due to the excellent relations that early Jews had established, the Israelis found themselves in a favorable environment. Scores of Israelis arrived, some in the diplo-

matic corps, a few as professionals, but most in business. Over the years many have joined the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation and currently form about 80% of the membership. The community mainly resides in Nairobi. Shabbat services are held and every holiday celebrated. The Jewish Community of Kenya is unique, comprising Jewry from all corners of the earth, Sephardic and Ashkenazi— and native-born Kenyan Jews. In 2004 the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation celebrated its 100th year anniversary. Since the Establishment of Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa in 1991, the Nairobi Jewish Community and Chabad have been in close contact. Throughout the years we visit the Jewish Community and help cater to their spiritual needs while simultaneously enhancing Jewish pride, awareness and identity amongst our brethren there.

“The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of G-d, and deeds of kindness”

Shabbat June 20th/ 3 Tamuz marks 21 years since the passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Shneerson obm. This is a special day in which his Shluchim / Chassidim and followers of all walks of life, rededicate themselves to his life’s mission of preparing the Jewish people and the world for the final redemption from this exile with the coming of Moshiach speedily in our days, Amen.

NIGERIA Nigeria’s Jewish Community is mainly in Lagos and Abuja. Since the establishment of Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa’s HQ in the DRC in 1991, we have been sending Rabbinical students and volunteer Rabbis to Nigeria to assist the local communities for all their Jewish Holiday needs. In conjunction with our Celebration 20 in 2011, recognizing 20 years of service and commitment to the Jewish communities of Central Africa, we pledged to open a center in Nigeria within the coming year. Sure to our word, one of our former emissaries, Rabbi Israel Uzan, who had been to Nigeria numerous times as a volunteer student and who had recently married, was sent with his young wife for the High Holidays of 2012. Originally

themselves in Lagos, but have since relocated to the larger city of Abuja where many more Jews reside. With support from the local business community and CLCA, Rabbi and Mrs. Israel Uzan, have truly established themselves in Abuja and have built a thriving and flourishing center with a broad array of educational and social programs activities geared to all Jewish expatriates residing there. From weekly synagogue services, Hebrew Sunday and afternoon school, children’s Camp, Holiday programs , kosher food, etc., their reach extends from Abuja , Lagos, Port Harcourt and beyond. As their activities expand and more families and children join in their programs, plans are currently being drawn up to build a Chabad Community Center and Mikvah.

OHEL MOSHE CHABAD YESHIVA GEDOLAH OF THE CONGO The Yeshiva Gedolah Ohel Moshe Chabad Gedolah of the Congo, was founded in 2012 when a nucleus of eight bochurim, personally selected by Rabbi Shlomo Bentolila, were sent to Kinshasa, DRC. Students come for one full academic school year, hence the Yeshiva hosts a new group of Rabbinical students each year. Additionally. two groups of Yeshiva students came for a special summer program so that the Yeshiva is open year round. An established learning program of Gemorah, Shulchan Aruch and Chassidut comprise the main body of the curriculum. In the tradition of Chabad yeshivas, students are also required to invest a portion of their weekly schedule to community service. In addition to the academic side of the classes, the students gain hands-on experience in community service, learning with local businessmen daily in the evening hours, by participating in a weekly Mishmor program every Thursday night and by fanning out every Friday afternoon – and on Jewish holidays – throughout the city, teaching Judaism to their coreligionists.

Social activism plays a major role in the Yeshiva curriculum, as students are encouraged to develop a sense of social consciousness and to actively engage members of the local Jewish community in Kinshasa in carrying out acts of goodness and kindness and the performance of Mitzvot. The tremendous impact that they have made on the city during these years has been widely recognized and acknowledged. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Merkos Shlichus program and to visit other Jewish communities across Central Africa to enhance their Holiday programs and services. After graduating, many of the students implement this training, as they go on to become leaders of their own communities. Now in its fourth year, the Yeshiva has decided to take in a higher caliber and older age Yeshiva students and to offer a highly accredited Rabbinic ordination program otherwise known as a Semicha program. Upon graduating, each of our student Rabbis will be qualified to become a community Rabbi in his own right and to share the knowledge he has learned and accumulated over the years with his community members.

MERKOS SHLICHUS The Merkos Shlichus program dispatches Roving Rabbis that include hundreds of rabbinical students that travel each year to small Jewish communities around the globe for Pesach and the High Holidays. Created and directed by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, Roving Rabbis is one of the oldest and longest running revolutionary outreach programs, since its founding in 1943, almost 70 years ago. During Passover and the High Holidays, our rabbinical students run Seders and provide services for local Jews, many of whom would not otherwise be involved in any holiday event. They also bring hands-on arts and crafts relevant to the current holidays for the local children, and run Shofar factories for the High Holidays and model Matzah bakeries for Passover. In recent years, we have also sent students to some countries for Chanukah. In the course of their visits, the students spend time meeting with local Jewish residents and businesses, sharing with them their passion for Jewish life and bringing Jewish awareness and observance wherever they go. HISTORY In 1943, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Shneerson ob”m set up a system to deepen the connection of American Jews in remote locations to their people and their religion. Under the guidance of his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous

memory, the Rebbe created the Merkos Shlichus program. In the late ‘forties, the program expanded to cater to the Jewish farmers scattered throughout northeastern United States. In the early 1950s, the Rebbe added international destinations to the growing list. The students spent months on the road, often subsiding on matzah, canned fish, and vegetables for weeks on end. The Rebbe eagerly read their mailed reports, in addition to extensively debriefing them upon their return. The students were often amazed by the Rebbe’s care for, and intimate knowledge of, Jewish life in the remotest of communities. TODAY Sardinia, Italy; The Dakotas; Bosnia; Beijing, China; Des Plains, IL; Kauai, HI; Wales, UK....Chabad representatives have brought Torah, joy and warmth to Jews in thousands of cities in over one hundred and fifty countries. The hundreds of young students who participate in this annual program stand on the forefront of Jewish life. They visit thousands of outposts in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and beyond. Their luggage consists of kosher food, Jewish books and educational material, as well as tefillin, mezuzot and other religious articles. All in all, thousands of mezuzot and tens of thousands of Jewish information packets are distributed each year in thousands of communities. Here in Central Africa and on a local

level, under the aegis of Rabbi Shlomo Bentolila, Director of Chabad of Central Africa, Rabbinical students from our Yeshiva and with the assistance of students flown in from New York, France South Africa and Israel, help us reach Jews across Sub Saharan Africa. In the past few years alone, our emissaries have visited 1) Luanda, Angola; 2) Brazzaville and 3) Pointe Noire in the Congo Republic, 4) Abidjan in the Ivory Coast; 5) Freetown, Sierra Leone; 6) Kinshasa and 7) Lubumbashi in the D.R.C.; 8) Bata and 9) Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, 10) Nairobi, Kenya; 11) Windhoek, Namibia; 12) Libreville, Gabon; 13) Lagos, 14) Abuja and 15) Port Harcourt, Nigeria; 16) Accra, Ghana; 17) Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; 18) Kigali, Rwanda; 19) Kampala, Uganda; 20) Lusaka, Zambia; 21) Dar el Saalam, Tanzania; 22) Zanzibar, and many other smaller cities across the continent. In many places, our emissaries have become an integral part of the fabric of Jewish life, as their seasonal and yearly visits have become a much-anticipated highlight of, and source of inspiration for the entire year. In fact, the many visits by our emissaries to Nigeria culminated in our recent opening of a new center there in 2012. In anticipation of Celebration 25 which will take place sometime next year, we hope to open additional centers as an expansion of our highly successful Merkos Shlichus programs. ___________________________________________________________________________ For any questions regarding this exciting program and how to ensure your local community can benefit from this program, please contact us at: rabbi@jewishafrica.com.
