Aspen Summer Guide 2016

Page 1

Dear friend, As we approach the second anniversary of the opening of the Chabad Jewish Community Center, I am delighted to present you with a comprehensive Summer Guide of our educational offerings and cultural activities. Throughout the past year, it has been truly heartwarming to celebrate with you, learn with you and grow with you in the magnificent premises of Aspen’s JCC. We are once again excited to offer a variety of youth programs, Shabbat festivities, adult education courses, holiday celebrations, social events, recreational pastimes, and enrichment programs. I am confident that you will find the Jewish Community Center to be a warm, welcoming, cheerful and spirited – not to mention aesthetically appealing – environment in which to explore and celebrate your heritage while feeling part of a dynamic and thriving community. Among the many attractive features of the Aspen Jewish Community Center is that one is not required to be a “member” to participate in any of our programs at any level. Indeed, we welcome folks of all ages and from all walks of life – regardless of background or affiliation – with open arms and an open heart, as we seek to make our center your friendly “home away from home.” I encourage you to become acquainted with the exciting new menu of programs, services, events and activities that will be offered to the community at large during the JCC Aspen’s upcoming summer season. Furthermore, if you have not done so yet, I invite you to stop by and take a tour of the exquisite facility. My invitation to you and yours is not merely an invitation to bring new meaning into your lives, but indeed to be a part of history! Looking forward to greeting you at the JCC in the near future, we remain, Sincerely, Rabbi Mendel & Lieba Mintz If you would like to schedule a tour of our new facility, please feel free to contact Rabbi Mintz at (970) 544-3770 or via email: rabbi@jccaspen.com

Prior to joining Touro in 2009 as Senior Provost and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Kadish taught at the University of Michigan and held a 19-year tenure at Northwestern University. He served Northwestern as the Chief of the Cardiology division, Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Trials unit, and sat on the finance and investment committees of the Northwestern clinical practice plan.

REWIRING THE BRAIN: USES AND ABUSES OF ADVANCING NEUROTECHNOLOGY

DATE & TIME Tuesday, July 26 5:30 pm LOCATION Aspen Jewish Community Center 435 West Main Street RSVP jccaspen.com info@jccaspen.com 970-544-3770 SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE: Diamond: $5,000 Gold: $2,500 Silver: $1,000 Bronze: $500

Advances in neurobiology offer hope for medical interventions against the burden of neurologic and psychiatric disease. At the same time, our new knowledge could be used for purposes beyond therapy, including the pursuit of desires and ambitions corrosive to individual identity and cooperative community. Drawing on technological developments in direct brain-computer interfacing, neural implants, and proposals for bio enhanced education, recreation, and religious experience, we will consider the ethical challenges of our new technology and seek principles that sustain human dignity and promote personal and social flourishing. PRESENTER: William B. Hurlbut is a physician and Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University Medical Center. His primary areas of interest involve the ethical issues associated with advancing biomedical technology, the biological basis of moral awareness, and studies in the integration of theology and philosophy of biology. In addition to teaching at Stanford, he has worked with NASA on projects in astrobiology and as a member of the Chemical and Biological Warfare working group at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation.

reflections

by carolyn h. manosevitz mfa

In 2003 I visited my ancestral home in Kremenets, Ukraine. I stood at the mass grave where close to 40 family members are buried. It was a life changing moment. After considerable research and reflection, I have come to the conclusion that we have much to learn from those who inhabited the now destroyed shtetls of Eastern Europe. They taught us about spirit, about tenacity, about faith, tradition and survival. My intention in my art that has followed that moment at the mass grave in Kremenets, is to preserve the memory of those destroyed communities.

SHOW RUNS: May - June 29

LIKE WATER

The current focus of Manosevitz’s art is what she describes as the ‘aftermath’ of the Shoah. Absence and memory are recurring themes in her 3D paintings and paper sculptures.

By Nina Hawn Zale

Photography is traditionally approached as a reproduction of reality, whether portraiture or landscape, or documenting events in the world around us. An artist’s vision is often fluid, sometimes creating fantastical images that are very real but not necessarily recognizable. I enjoy the creative manipulation of abstraction.

Franek and Jozek Kalina, sons of a poor farmer, are brothers from a small village in central Poland. Franek immigrated to the United States in the 80’s, and cut all ties with his family. Only when Jozek’s wife arrives in the US, without explanation, does Franek finally return to his homeland. Franek discovers that Jozek has been ostracized from the community, and constantly receives various threats. As Franek and Jozek struggle to rebuild their relationship, they are drawn into a gothic tale of intrigue. The two brothers eventually uncover a dark secret that forces them to confront the history of their family and their hometown. Upon its release in Poland, Aftermath received acclaim nationals and also generated intense controversy. YARTZEIT MEMORIAL BOARD

THE MIKVAH It has been called the secret of the Jewish survival - a mystical connection to the Garden of Eden. There, a woman enveloped by its living waters and immersed in its sanctity, is transformed to a state of spiritual purity, reaffirming the cycle of life. For thousands of years, Jewish marriages have been strengthened through the holiness of the special Mitzvah of Mikvah. By immersing in a Mikvah – a ritual bath constructed according to the intricate laws detailed in the Torah - a woman taps into the spiritual powers of this ongoing tradition, connecting with Jewish women around the world and throughout history.

This lovely Memorial Board is a way to remember our departed loved ones and to honor them by placing their name on this plaque to be displayed prominently in the lobby of the sanctuary. There will also be a light that will burn bright on the month of Yartzeit (anniversary of passing) and all Yizkor memorial services. This permanent remembrance is something that will give you great comfort for many years to come. Please consider adding your departed loved ones to our memorial wall. MEMORIAL WALL The Memorial wall has 200 spaces to affix a prominent Yartzeit plaque inscribed with your loved ones name for a donation of $1,800.00 each. To order your Yartzeit plaque(s), please contact the center or visit us online. We will need the following information: • English name • Hebrew name (if available) • Date of passing

The Mikvah experience is a woman’s mystical journey to a place where she alone embraces her spirituality and relationship with G-d. The Mikvah’s waters are an embryonic liquid that cleanses refreshes and hydrates the essence of her feminine spirituality that ultimately brings about much peace and blessing to her whole family. Our brand-new state-of-the-art Mikvah / Spa facility is available to all, regardless of level of observance. For more information about our community Mikvah or if you would like to take a private tour of the Mikvah facility please call 970-544-3770 or Email: Mikvah@jccaspen.com
