Guthrie and Percival Commemoration

Guthrie and Percival Commemoration 2023
The first Guthrie Commemoration was held on 22nd May 1868. It consisted of a dinner at the Clifton Down Hotel, with Canon Moseley, Chairman of the Council, being in the chair. Several of the Council, the Masters and Old Cliftonians and a few members of the sixth form were present - about fifty in all.
It is a commemoration of the building of the Chapel and of John Guthrie and his wife Caroline, its founders and of all other “founders and benefactors, by whose benefit this whole school is brought up to Godliness and good learning”.
Welcome to The Prep School Commemoration

Today provides opportunities for the pupils to show off their school, and for us all to thank you for your support of The Prep over the last year. I hope you enjoy the day!
Aim High, Be Kind, Be Brave.

Hymn
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty; Hold me with thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore, Feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through; Strong Deliv’rer, strong Deliv’rer Be thou still my strength and shield, Be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side; Songs of praises, Songs of praises, I will ever give to thee, I will ever give to thee.

Hymn
I vow to thee, my country, All earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, The service of my love; The love that asks no question, The love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar The dearest and the best; The love that never falters, The love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted The final sacrifice.
And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, Most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, We may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, Her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently Her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness And all her paths are peace.

The Prayers
An Act of Thanksgiving
Let us offer to God our thanks and praise for those gifts which enrich the life of our school:
For the discipline of learning, the excitement of discovery, and the satisfaction of using our knowledge for good purposes:
All: Thanks be to God.
For the inspiration of music and art; for the joy of creation:
All: Thanks be to God.
For friendship and laughter; for the experience of living and working with others:
All: Thanks be to God.
For those who teach and those who serve; for all who share their abilities and their time to benefit our community:
All: Thanks be to God.
For the traditions of the past and for the challenge of the future:
All: Thanks be to God.
For the provision of this Chapel; for the opportunity of worship:
All: Thanks be to God.
Above all, we give thanks for the example of our Lord Jesus Christ; for his gift of fellowship and his example of service:
All: Thanks be to God.
Accept this, our thanksgiving, in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen.
The School Collect
Chaplain: We give thee humble and hearty thanks, O most merciful Father, for John Guthrie and Caroline his wife, founders of this Chapel, for John Percival, first Head Master, and for all our Governors and Benefactors, by whose benefit this whole School is brought up to godliness and good learning.
And we humbly beseech thee to give us grace to use these thy blessings to the glory of thy Holy Name, that we may become profitable members of the Church and Commonwealth, and at last be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. All: Amen.
The Lords Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn
And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?
The Blessing The National Anthem
Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England’s green and pleasant land.
C H H Parry (1848–1918)
W Blake (1757–1827)
An Act of Dedication
O Holy Spirit, giver of light and life, Impart to us thoughts higher than our own thoughts,
Prayers better than our own prayers, And powers beyond our own powers, That we may spend and be spent in the ways of love and goodness, After the perfect image of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
God save our gracious King! Long live our noble King! God save the King! Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the King.
Thy choicest gifts in store
On him be pleased to pour, Long may he reign. May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause, To sing with heart and voice, God save the King.
The Congregation and School are asked to stand in silence until the Choir and the Chaplain have left the Chapel.
Parents are requested to leave the Chapel after the main Procession.
Pupils should then remain seated until directed by House Staff.
