I Was Glad
Charles H. H. Parry (1848-1918)
I was glad when they said unto me : we will go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand in thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city, that is at unity in itself.
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces.
Psalm 122: 1-3, 6, 7
Hymn
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of His word; In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His Name! Make known His might, the deeds His arm has done; His mercy sure, from age to age the same; His Holy Name – the Lord, the Mighty One.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
Tell out, my soul, the glories of His word! Firm is His promise, and His mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord To children’s children and for evermore!
The Bidding Prayer
On this Commemoration Day, we come together to give thanks to God for the work of Bishop John Percival and for his vision in establishing this School; to pray for its continuance, for the service of its staff, past and present, for the students who are its being and its purpose, and for all those who have passed through its doors to serve the wider community.
As we participate in this act of worship and praise, we remember the many blessings bestowed by God upon our College through the years.
The First Reading
Joshua 1 v 1-8
Read by Stella Pikhulya (HH)
The Anthem
Blessed be the God and Father
Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again Unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, That fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation Ready to be revealed in the last time.
But as he which hath called you is holy, So be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, By the word of God.
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. Amen.
1 Peter 3-5, 15-17, 22-25
The Second Reading
‘The Guest House’
by Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273)
Read by Sveva Roma (WoH)
Hymn
Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty, Hold me with Thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar, Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, Be thou still my strength and shield; Be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee.

The Prayers
Led by the Chaplain
Let us in a moment of stillness, remember before God all for whom we should pray.
Merciful God, Make us to be instruments of your peace; Where there is hatred, may we bring love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is sadness, joy; Where there is suffering, relief; Grant that we may not seek so much To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love.
All: Amen.
Chaplain: Let us give thanks to Almighty God for his blessings to us. For the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ; for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit and for the promise of eternal life; let us bless the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.
Chaplain: For those among us who are about to take their place in a wider world, for the part they have played in this College and for the concern and service we trust they will give to humanity and God’s creation in future years; let us bless the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Chaplain: For the life of this College; for its students, members of staff, and for all that encourages goodness, truth and integrity in this place; let us bless the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
The College Collect
Chaplain: We give thee humble and hearty thanks, O most merciful Father, for John Guthrie and Caroline his wife, founders of this Chapel, for John Percival, first Head Master, and for all our Governors and Benefactors, by whose benefit this whole School is brought up to godliness and good learning.
And we humbly beseech thee to give us grace to use these thy blessings to the glory of thy Holy Name, that we may become profitable members of the Church and Commonwealth, and at last be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. All: Thanks be to God. Amen.
Chaplain: As we offer our thanks for all his goodness to us and to our predecessors, and ask for guidance in the years to come, we pray that he will help us to realise his presence, respond to his love and live our lives to his praise and glory. We gather all our prayers and thanksgivings together, saying:
The Lords Prayer
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn
And did those feet in ancient time, Walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God, On England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here, Among these dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem, In England’s green and pleasant land.
The Blessing
The National Anthem
God save our gracious King! Long live our noble King!
God save the King! Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the King.
Thy choicest gifts in store On him be pleased to pour, Long may he reign. May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause, To sing with heart and voice, God save the King.
