Welcome from the Head of College We are delighted to be welcoming back our students and staff. A great deal of consideration has gone into how the College will reopen safely in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. This document outlines the measures we have taken to ensure a safe working and learning environment for all. Our plans for reopening centre on four key principles. These are: (a) physical distancing and the use of bubbles, (b) an enhanced hygiene and cleaning regime, (c) having a testing regime in place, and (d) having in place measures to deal with suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19. I thank you all for your support and understanding during this period.

Dr Tim Greene Head of College

Safe on site — Enhanced cleaning regimes and fogging The College has introduced several changes to its cleaning procedures to ensure a robust approach to compliance with Government guidelines. There is an enhanced cleaning schedule with particular focus on shared and frequently touched areas. Facilities such as bathrooms, sports equipment and science apparatus are cleaned thoroughly throughout the day, as are

surfaces such as handrails and door push plates. Contact points within classrooms are disinfected between lessons and windows are kept open in all rooms to provide good ventilation. Wall-mounted hand sanitiser units have been positioned at key points around the school and, where appropriate, doors are kept open to remove common touchpoints. In high-use areas, an intensive cleaning regime is undertaken which includes the use of a fogging machine. This is a device which applies antiviral disinfectant and significantly reduces risk.

— Staff and pupil requirements We have introduced new hygiene measures to be carried out by staff and pupils to help ensure their safety. These measures include pupils and staff washing and sanitising their hands before each lesson, before and after

lunch, and regularly at other times of the day.

rooms can be thoroughly cleaned.

Pupils must carry hand sanitiser and must wear a face covering at all times when moving around indoors.

Teachers or other staff members are required to maintain a suitable distance from pupils. Where teachers need to work more closely with a pupil, for example to discuss a piece of written work, they are required to wear face visors or coverings.

Pupils must keep all of their personal possessions, such as books, stationery, calculators and sports kit either in their own locker in their House or in a closed bag. Pupils are also required to keep all areas tidy so that

In line with Government advice, groups of pupils are permitted to only interact

with other pupils that are in their social bubble. A pupil’s social bubble is usually their year group or boarding house and they must maintain a separation between one bubble and another. Non-teaching staff are encouraged to work from home where possible to minimise the amount of movement around the College at any one time.

— Moving around the site There are a number of measures in place to ensure pupils and staff can move around the site as safely as possible. Pupils must wear a face covering when on buses and when moving around the school indoors such as in corridors, queuing for meals etc.

Many buildings now have a one-way system to avoid crossover of groups of pupils. The amount of time between each lesson has also been increased to minimise pupil traffic. Doors are kept open where possible, unless there is a fire risk, in order to minimise common touch points. Signage is displayed around the school to encourage the adoption of the safety measures described in this section, including NHS handwashing advice, reminders of the main symptoms of

Covid-19 and maximum occupancy signs where appropriate.

— School Shop The School Shop is available to pupils and staff, but numbers are limited to four in the shop at any one time. Those visiting the shop are required to queue at the barrier, maintaining social distance. Pupils and staff must wear a mask when in the shop and sanitise their hands before entering (disposable

masks and hand sanitizer is available at the entrance). There is also a one way system in place. The School Shop has launched an online click and collect service for uniform and other essential school equipment purchases. Go to shop.cliftoncollege. com to find out more.

— In lessons — Classrooms The majority of pupils and In classrooms, pupils sit far apart as possible teachers have now as and face the front of the returned to face- classroom. Pupils may wear face coverings if they wish to-face lessons. to do so. Teachers have

However, if a pupil is not able to be in school, lessons can be broadcast to them. Through the use of Google Classroom and other online resources, distance learning pupils are able to be taught effectively and incorporated into house and tutor groups.

seating plans for each lesson to ensure contact between pupils can be identified if required. Books are collected and marked as usual, but staff wear gloves or sanitise their hands before and after marking.

Some Music lessons are still held online. Any face-to-face Music lessons are only held in rooms sufficiently large enough to allow pupils and teachers to be appropriately distanced.

Every sport has fulfilled a Covid-19-related risk assessment. We are running a full programme of sport, adding cross country to the programme following national governing bodies and DfE guidance, and

keeping students in their year group bubbles where possible. Where this is not possible, extra plans are in place to minimise risk and keep consistent groups. All students arrive changed for sport and new safety provisions are in place for use of school transport. See page 12 for more detail. You can view Sport England’s advice for national governing bodies at www.sportengland. org/how-we-can-help/ national-governing-bodies.

— Libraries In order to maintain a broad offering of study facilities, a number of measures have been introduced to ensure the Percival Library can be accessed regularly.

The Library operates a one-way system and tables are numbered to allow for two students per table with year groups kept together if possible. Students are required to book a slot by 9pm the previous day. A register with a seating plan is taken each lesson, tables are cleaned in between and windows and doors are kept open when possible. Books can be taken out as usual. Books on return are placed in a box outside the

library and quarantined for 72 hours and only handled with gloves. Magazines and DVDs can also be borrowed and then are placed in a box for quarantine. Evening sessions are available for Sixth Form boarders, but slots need to be booked in advance. There are currently no evening sessions for the Fifth Form in Percival Library, but this will be reviewed monthly.

— Meal times In order to comply with social distancing requirements and allow for cleaning in between each sitting, the dining halls have been reconfigured.

Preparatory School pupils are now dining in Bretten Memorial Hall to allow more flexibility and reduce pupil traffic. Timetables have also been altered to enable us to allocate year groups different time slots for lunch.

Senior pupils and staff are on-hand at each entry point to direct pupils in a safe and distanced way. The Catering Team are disinfecting areas between each pupil sitting and handing out cutlery and preplated meals using gloves.

Pupils are required to observe social distancing when queuing for meals and are asked to wash/sanitise hands before and after queuing up for any meal.

— In Houses Measures have been put in place in Houses to ensure pupil safety while also aiming to retain a strong sense of community in the House.

Boarding Houses have temporarily been restructured to further minimise contact between year groups. There will also be no occasional boarding option until further notice. Pupils are assigned the use of a particular bathroom in the Houses to avoid crossover. Pupils must also use their own crockery and cutlery and keep these clean in their lockers.

We ask parents not to enter any House without first discussing this with the Housemaster/mistress. Tutors are required to sanitise their hands between moving from one part of the House to another.

— Extra-curricular activities The College is offering a varied co-curricular programme with some adjustments where necessary.

Where possible, co-curricular activities such as First Aid, Orienteering, Bushcraft, Problem-solving, Archery and Mountain Biking will take place locally in year group bubbles. Duke of Edinburgh and CCF are taking place with changes to the process where necessary and Clifton in the Community is going ahead

predominantly as online activities such as mentoring schemes. All school trips will be fully risk-assessed and trips abroad are postponed for the foreseeable future.

— Assemblies and events The school calendar has been reviewed to offer a full programme of online events.

are currently no House assemblies taking place in the House Hall. These are held via video link to pupils in their studies.

Whole school assemblies and Chapel services are being run online, and there

Music concerts are being live-streamed, recorded and broadcast to ensure they

Parents evenings will take place remotely via Zoom.

are still made available to parents and wider audiences. Many other events, such as lectures or visiting speakers, will also be run as online events.

— Transport Where pupils are required to travel by school transport, processes have been introduced to ensure their safety.

The school minibuses are fogged each morning and students must sanitise their hands before entering the bus and after exiting it. At the end of the trip the teacher in charge wipes down handles and frequently-touched surfaces. A register of those on the bus is taken for track and trace purposes.

The group should be year group specific where possible. All students are required to wear masks during the journey unless they have special circumstances. No pupil may sit in the front seat adjacent to the driver.

Visits to the site New protocols for visitors to the school are now in place. When visitors are coming onto the site they must declare they are symptom free on arrival and supply their contact details for track and trace purposes. Whilst at the College, visitors must follow social distancing rules, sanitise their hands on entering and exiting the College and must be accompanied at all times.

— Visiting the School Shop The School Shop has launched an online shop that provides a ‘click and collect’ service for uniform and other school essentials. In order to prioritise customers who need personal help, physical appointments are only currently available to new and transitioning pupils.

However, the School Shop team is on hand to speak to parents who need support with any queries over telephone or email. Parents and pupils are able to access the School Shop catalogue as well as uniform lists at shop.cliftoncollege. com

— Visiting the Sports Centre Measures have been put in place to keep all pupils and customers safe in line with Government and industry guidelines. The Sports Centre is currently only open to existing customers and there is a reviewed capacity limit, with staff memberships currently suspended. An additional gym space has also been created to still allow for a 49-station gym, however not all stations will be live at the same time.

social distancing in all areas as well as full cleaning between uses of each area. To find out more about Covid-19 measures in place at the Sports Centre, visit www.ccsl-cliftoncollege.com/ covid-19

— Redgrave Theatre The Redgrave Theatre is currently closed for visitors. To keep up to date with any developments, visit www. redgravetheatre.com

— Visiting for sport fixtures We are now allowing parents of pupils who are playing in sport matches to attend fixtures on-site. Parents should complete a form prior to arrival.

Times for use of the gym have been reduced. These changes allow for effective

Monitoring & medical care If someone has symptoms they are required to follow the processes outlined below. If someone in your household has symptoms The pupil will not be able to come into the College as they and their household should self-isolate themselves at home in accordance with the NHS guidelines. Parents are required to notify the Housemaster / Mistress at once and should arrange for an NHS test for the family member that has symptoms, and inform the College of the outcome of that test. The pupil will have access to the distance learning provision from Clifton College.

If a day pupil develops symptoms at school The pupil will be moved to the College’s isolation facility where they will be supervised by a member of staff wearing appropriate PPE. The pupil will be tested for Covid-19 on-site and will receive results within 2 hours. If the pupil tests positive, parents should arrange to collect their child. Please read the latest information on the NHS website about symptoms and how long a household should isolate for. While a day pupil is waiting for the outcome from their Covid-19 test the school will continue to operate as normal.

If a boarder develops symptoms The pupil will be moved to the College’s isolation facility where they will be supervised by a member of staff wearing appropriate PPE. The Housemaster / Mistress will inform the parents. The College will arrange for an on-site Covid-19 test and will receive results within 2 hours. In line with government advice in relation to boarding schools, boarders are regarded as part of a household which will consist of the other pupils with whom they come into close contact in their residential accommodation. If a boarder displays symptoms then the guidance makes clear that the other boarders within their ‘household’ must self isolate until the result of the Covid-19 test is known.

If a member of boarding staff displays symptoms Boarding staff will take an on-site Covid-19 test. It may be necessary to isolate all of the pupils within the house until the result of the Covid-19 test is known, this can take up to 2 hours.

If a pupil or a member of staff If a member of boarding staff has an NHS test that gives a positive (HOM or matron) has an NHS test result that gives a positive result The College will contact the local health protection team. The College will provide information about the contacts that the pupil or the member of staff will have had. This will be available from classroom seating plans and other registers for activities etc. We will assist with all areas of the NHS Test and Trace as required both by Public Health England and also Bristol City Council. We will work with the local health protection team to identify those pupils or other members of staff who need to selfisolate or to be advised to be alert for symptoms. We will contact those pupils and their parents. If the pupil is a boarder then they will be isolated in separate accommodation within the school grounds, looked after throughout by a dedicated staff team.

it will be necessary to isolate all the pupils within the boarding house for the required period. In the event of any pupil not being able to attend lessons because they are isolating then the pupil will continue to have access to work via Google Classroom. If a boarder is in isolation either in their own house or in separate accommodation then this will be fully supervised and all catering will be provided directly to them. Care for any boarder who is unwell will be directed by our trained onsite medical professionals with further support being available from the College’s local GP practice. Parents will of course have the option for their child to be collected from the school and cared for at home or by a guardian.
