A TRAILBLAZER IN THE ZERO

EMMISION VEHICLE INDUSTRY

JaguarLandRover(JLR),aprominentautomotivemanufacturer,hasbeen makingsignificantstridesinincorporatingrenewableenergyintoits operations,reflectingacommitmenttosustainabilityandreducingits carbonfootprint.Throughinnovativeinitiativesandstrategic investments,JLRhasbeenharnessingrenewableenergysourcesto poweritsmanufacturingfacilities,offices,andevenitsvehicleproduction processes.

OnThursday22ndFebruary,theGovernmentannouncedthattheUKistowithdrawfromtheEnergyCharterTreaty(ECT) aftereffortstoalignitwithnet-zerofailed.TheUK’swithdrawalwilltakeeffectafteroneyear-whentheECTwillno longerapplytoanynewenergyinvestments TheUKjoins9EUmemberstates,includingFrance,Spainandthe Netherlands,inwithdrawingfromthetreaty ThedecisionwillsupporttheUK’stransitiontonet-zeroandstrengthenits energysecurity.

The1994EnergyCharterTreatyisaninternational agreementwhichhelpedinitiatecross-bordercooperation intheenergyindustry,predominantlythefossilfuels industry Itwasdevisedtoencourageinternational investmentintheenergysector,inasystemsetupto protectfossilfuelinvestorsintheformerSovieteconomies inthe1990s.However,criticssayithasputgovernmentsat riskoflegalactionfromfossilfuelcompanies(andtheir investors),whohaveusedthetreatytosuegovernments overcleanenergyandclimatepoliciesthatcouldnegatively impacttheirprofits.LeoMercer,policyanalystatthe GranthamResearchInstituteonClimateChange,says:" [Thetreaty]wasdesignedtoprotectenergycompanies fromsuddenpolicydecisionsthatunderminetheir investments,”.Therearecurrently56signatoriesand contractingpartiestotheECTwhichenteredintoforcein 1998.

TheUKhasbeentryingtoreformtheECTforseveralyears,however signatorieshavestruggledtoreformitasthemodernisedECT(which shouldhavebeenimplementedinNovember2022)wasrejectedby9EU memberstates.EnergySecurityandNetZeroMinisterGrahamStuart announcedinSeptember2023thattheUKwouldbereviewingits membershipoftheECT.AstheUKplanstoachievenet-zerofossilfuel emissionsby2050,GrahamStuartclaimsthat“remainingamemberwould notsupportourtransitiontocleaner,cheaperenergy,andcouldeven penaliseusforourworld-leadingeffortstodelivernetzero.”.Thedecision appearstohavebeenmadeaftersimilardecisionsweremadebySpain, Germany,FranceandtheNetherlandsalongwithdemonstrationsand pressureappliedbygreengroupsintheUK.AlthoughtheUK’swithdrawal issettotakeplaceinayear'stime,a20-yearsunsetclausemeansthe governmentcouldstillbeexposedtolegalactionunderthetreatyfrom companiesbehindexistinginvestments,causingsomeconfusionover whethercontinuingcases-suchastheUK’ssuitagainstSlovenia-willbe affected.

Companiesaroundtheworldarecurrentlyimplementingnewsustainableinitiativesandareexperiencingmanypositive repercussions Forexample,theUK-basedmultinationalcompanyUnileverhasimplementedavarietyofsustainable practicesthathaveprovedtobelargelybeneficial.Firstly,theyhavecommittedtosourcingalloftheirrawmaterials sustainablytoreducethedeforestationandthreatstobiodiversitycausedbyintensivepalmoilandsoyfarming.Secondly, theyareaimingtoimplementacirculareconomymodelbymakingalloftheirproductsrecyclable,reusableor compostabletoensureresourcesareconstantlycyclingratherthanbeingwasted

Finally,theyhavenotonlyconsidereddirectenvironmentalimpactsbuthavecommittedtoensuringgenderequality,fair labourpracticesandcommunitydevelopmentwhichwillinevitablyindirectlybenefittheenvironment.Now,youmaybe wonderinghowthisrelatestoeconomicwelfare.Well,theseambitiousinitiativesarenotonlycatalysingpositivesocial andenvironmentalchangesbuthavesurprisinglydeliveredunexpectedlysizablefinancialbenefits Forexample,the companyhasincreaseditsprofitabilityandshareholdervalueasreducingwastehasledtomoreeffectiveuseof resources,improvedefficiencyandcreatedauniquesellingpointthathasenhancedUnilever’sreputation.Thisreal-world exampleshowshowintegratingsustainabilityintobusinessstrategiescaneasilyleadtoenvironmentalismandsuccess goinghandinhand Afterall,whowouldn’twanttoreduceresourcescarcityandcontributionstoclimatechangewhile increasingshareholdervalueinthelongterm?
