climb on! singapore 2006 After the incredible success of Climb On! 2004 at Sentosa, most certainly nobody had doubts about “Climb On!” being prominently featured in 2005. So, on a beautiful sunny weekend in August 2006, CLIMB ASIA and the PEOPLES’ ASSOCIATION ADVENTURE TEAM got together yet again to present the most eagerly anticipated climbing event in the country! This oneof-a-kind event brings together the growing yet closely-knitted climbing community in Singapore.
Climb On! Singapore 2005 was held over a period of 4 days from the 4th to 7th of August 2005. Also for the first time ever, the festival was held in conjunction with the National Day Carnivals at the Tampines Central heartlands. The red-colored event T-shirts added to the atmosphere and inspired feelings of patriotism in all of us!
climb on! singapore 2006 First up on the list-of-events for Climb On! Singapore 2005, was the fast-paced and adrenaline-filled speed climbing category held together with the PAYM 5-in1 Street games competition. 2 climbers race up the 10 m wall at unbelievable speeds (some requiring less than 10 seconds! ) whilst attempting to beat each other to the top. Mr. Muhd Zaki emerged victorious in the Men’s section, overcoming his opponent by a mere 0.6 seconds, while our female counterpart from Hong Kong, Miss Lisa Cheng, came in first for the Women section. The other games include 3-on-3 Basketball, Street Soccer, Floor-ball and Table Soccer. Along with this speed climbing event, we had appealed to the younger generation who crave a more “extreme” lifestyle. But of course, the main event for Climb On! Singapore 2005 was yet to come.
As early as 7am on the sunny Sunday morning of 7th August, climbers of all sorts had congregated at Tampines Central Park to register and prepare for THE climbing event of the year.
climb on! singapore 2006 Some of these climbers came from as far away as France and Canada while a considerable number came from our neighbours – Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. The more seasoned climbers were observed to be deep in thought, moving from wall to wall while studying the proďŹ les and handholds – formulating their winning strategy.
At 9am sharp, the scene was nothing short of frantic desperation! Climbers, young and old, seasoned and novice, dashing in all directions to get their hands on the climbing walls. This year, we had an unprecedented 48 routes on a total of 20 walls scattered all over the Tampines Central Park.
The enthusiastic crowd of almost 600 participants climbed throughout the day, enduring the blistering heat for 8 hours and right through the mid-day sun! Some harbour hopes of scoring the highest points to attain attractive prizes or winning glory.
climb on! singapore 2006 Most were contented just to challenge themselves, stretching limits of their physical prowess, fighting their own inner battles and earning their sense of accomplishment. But winning or fierce competition was never the agenda for this event. For most climbers, being part of this event means a chance to climb together, share technique and tips. No other climbing events had allowed participants to climb without “isolation”, beta sharing, unlimited attempts and virtually unlimited time!
This year, we had overseas climbers from as far as France, who travelled all the way to sunny Singapore to be part of this annual fun-filled event. Other overseas climbers included the likes of Khairul Hafiz and Hasfanizam, both of which are Malaysian National Team climbers as wells as Bondan Kartiko (Indonesian National Team) and Lisa Cheng (Hong Kong National Team).
Their presence added an international flavour to the event as well as put us on the map in the world of climbing.
climb on! singapore 2006 The event Finale was the Dyno competition. “Dynos” are dynamic movements where the climber would jump from one handhold to another. As the distance between the handholds is rather large, climbers are forced to make spectacular, dynamic movement to catch the subsequent handhold. In a Dyno Competition, the climber who can Dyno to the furthest handhold wins.
This year’s Dyno competition was exciting as we had some great jumpers flying. The reigning dyno king, Mr. Muhd Taufiq managed to defend his title and once again jump to victory!
He caught a handhold that was placed an astonishing 2.4 meters away from the initial handhold! A new dyno queen was crown - Miss Lisa Cheng from Hong Kong leapt higher than last year’s champion, Sri Sulastri.
climb on! singapore 2006 The event ended with the prize presentation ceremony. Prizes were given out to the top 3 climbers in each category. The organisers would like to thank ALL event sponsors, supporters and most of all our rocking contestants without whom we would not have had such a party!
Free tryouts were also arranged for members of the public visiting the National Day Carnival the following day, where parents and kids alike got to try out climbing on the same walls used by our contestants the day before! As part of the event’s outreach programme, several groups of students from the Singapore Disability Sports Council also got a chance to learn and try climbing for a day! The session was aimed at not only giving the students a fun day out in the sun, but also to show them that climbing was not something reserved for the atheletic elite. As with our most basic message for the climbing carnival, climbing is FUN, and it’s for ANYONE with the right kind of attitude!
