hFf mag was started by a team of young creatives at ‘Cellb’ The Town’s old Police Station & Magistrate Court to promote ‘dhFf ’ Festival a celebration of Antur Stiniog’s Down Hill tracks & Cellb’s appetite for music! In 2012 they published the 2nd edition of the magazine which also contained ‘pages’ of the old Caban publication a magazine of the Votty & Oakley quarries amongst modern Blaenau life. By then it seemed we had stumbled on an important way of documenting the Towns new direction as in the case of Caban magazine during the period of the Slate Town & so dhFf takes Blaenau to the modern world & so our third issue of DHFF offers a mixture of old and new again : Talk on sports, reviewing new music and Blaenau’s general epicness. From the regeneration scheme that has everyone splitting hairs, to the Welsh Taliban, and the crazy people of Blaenau, this magazine has all you’d ever need, to all you’d ever want.

BE SY’N DIGWYDD BLAENAU?! HAT’S HAPPENING BLAENAU?!
B
y now I hope you’re an avid reader of this awesome magazine that is made for the people of Blaenau and beyond by the talented kids of Blaenau. Here you’ll find out about what’s going down on your doorstep and what’s of interest in the area. As I read through the last couple of issues from this publication, it’s clear to see how with time, not only has the area changed, but the youth of Blaenau’s interests have expanded, and through this magazine they’re able collaborate their current passions with their ability to write and design. Anything that’s of interest to the people of Blaenau is packed into this issue. I was pretty lucky when I was sixteen to be involved with the first ever magazine that came out of Cellb all the way back in 2007, ‘ClincR’, which was solely based on Blaenau and North Wales’s rich and thriving music scene. Every page was filled with interviews with bands of every genre, reviews of gigs that now seem like a distant memory and articles about current events that had made an impact with the Blaenau youth of that time. Back then, it seemed like all we had was the music scene, nothing else in Blaenau was particularly captivating our generation. Basically back then, if you weren’t in a band and making music with Gwallgofiaid you were probably getting pissed every weekend on the derelict rail tracks or, if you were
lucky enough, in the pubs (sorry Mam!). So, having a chance to make a magazine about our love of music was a great experience and getting a chance to make another magazine after that was even better! Then, having pegged it to university in Cardiff for three years and to have the chance to experience life in a fast paced world, it was quite refreshing to not have to come back to the same old slow-paced life of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The place is now a cultural hub! We have Antur Stiniog up and running since 2007 offering a load of outdoor activities which includes the gnarly bike trails, more businesses are opening in the town, seasonal fairs are being held for all the family to enjoy, local artists as well as world-class artists are playing in the ‘Cwrt’ in Cellb, Drum-House Ffest is being held on a yearly bases (watch out Wakestock!) and the face of Blaenau is changing as the town regeneration project plows on to provide us with a better looking town whilst still maintaining our unique heritage. As the town grows and livens up with events and activities, the Blaenau youth can enjoy and appreciate what the area finally has to offer to them, which can only mean that ‘DHFF’ Magazine can only get better! Want to know what’s happening in Blaenau? Then keep reading!

andering around t h e streets of Blaenau, we saw clearly the strangeness of those who live, and come to visit Blaenau Ffestiniog. But thats what makes us stand out, the strange and different ones, who make it impossible to forget Blaenau, as hard as we might try to forget! Although we both live outside of town itself, we realised straight away the odd way people here talked and behaved. Walking around we decided to stop and question a few of the local people who were seen as ‘interesting’ characters, the ones who gave Blaenau its real spirit. The ones who walked around with their ‘guns’ on display, the ones who swore they drank fire, and the crowd who thouht of themselves as being ‘too cool for school’ with cigarettes dangling out of their opened mouths, making sure we photographed all the people who gave Blaenau its new name - the town full of strange people.

He always wore a red coat every day of the week, a coat which was once a livery of some bands or other. But it was not the coat that attracted most of the attention but the decorative badges & medals which he wore on the breast. Jack didn’t give two hoots about the significance of the medals as long as they were attached to a colorful ribbon they worn with pride on his red coat.

The good, the bad, and the slate
I
t’s hard to miss the builders who have been hard at work in Blaenau creating the ‘iconic’ two columns out of slate this year in the train station worth ÂŁ4.5m. The idea behind it was to stop tourists and persuade them to visit Blaenau town itself, and spend money there- instead of using it like a bypass and getting straight on a bus to Llechwedd. It intends to put Blaenau back on the map! But the real question we need to ask is; is it worth spending so much on making Blaenau look good for tourists, or should there be more of a focus on actually improving things for the local people. Howard Bowcott, 54, from Penrhyndeudraeth is responsible for these changes to Blaenau, his aim was to give Blaenau a ‘waw factor’. This sculptor specialises in public art projects and his work is to be seen all around the Uk. He tries to get a balance between the beauty of detail in massive scale sculptures, and showing the culture of each area. Using Blaenau as an example, he celebrates the ‘Slate Splitters’, the men who split slate into small and thin pieces, and the skill used to do this by
projecting it to the entire community. It connects to the idea of workers who only used their hands. Around 36,000 pieces of local slate were used, and he said; “It’s nice to do something on my doorstep in Blaenau Ffestiniog. “At 30 feet high, they are big, imposing and striking. They have to be, in creating a WOW factor, when you come down the Crimea pass - instead of turning towards Llyn, you will want to stop and park your car in town and come back and take a picture of you standing in the gap between stating: ‘I have been to Blaenau Ffestiniog’. This has been a heavily debated subject amongst the local people of Blaenau, many argue that its a waste of money, because it doesn’t create any work and it doesn’t show the real spirit of Blaenau. This might be true, but it does show Blaenau in a better way, its selling the only real reason why people visit us - the slate. Also the idea of having children help in this project as they think of things to write on the streets means that old and new Blaenau ar connected.

Welsh? Did they sound scared? Did the “English Notâ€? come flying out of your pocket? No, didn’t think so. It would be so easy to trail through Roger Lewis’ article and discuss how unfounded ALL of his comments are (seriously, each one...no joke), but we recommend you read his article for yourself. There is however something I’d like to say regarding all these anti-Welsh articles : Stop with all your “Welsh has no x,z,v,q,or k... so they’re really stupidâ€? rubbish. IT IS ANOTHER LANGUAGE! Why would we have an English alphabet ‌ just to fit in with you?! Where are your “châ€?,â€?ddâ€?,â€?etc then eh?! The truth is that the children of Wales are familiar with the English language from birth via the t.v., radio and other media in general, and live in a world that appears to promote conformity more and more on a daily basis. Need we mention programmes such as “Geordie Shoreâ€?, “The Only Way Is Essex, or “Big Brotherâ€? whilst arguing with Rogers’ claim that the English culture is a higher one than our Welsh one? Unfortunately children who are fluent in Welsh seem to be getting rarer and rarer. So why is it that a journalist who is himself a Welshman proud of his country is attempting to promote an anti-Welsh ethos? Besmirches us with catcalls of “Welsh Talibanâ€?? It’s totally unreasonable, partly incorrect and stupid. Poor thing, he’s lost it.
ave Wales from the Welsh’ this was the plea being sent out by Roger Lewis, journalist for the Daily Mail. Following on from his online article he created even more of a stir in Wales having created his own hashtag on Twitter (Welsh Taliban) in response to a Vaughan Roderick tweet. Although Mr.Lewis was born in Wales, and is proud to be a Welshman, his article seems to say something to the contrary. Roger Lewis knows some Welsh words ,such as “mochyn(pig)â€?, “cwtch(hug)â€?, and that microwave is known as “pobty ping(the pinging oven)â€? as oppposed to “meicrodonâ€? ‌.which is what it is referred to by everyone else. We, here at DHFf, are not sure if this has simply been said to assure us, somehow or another, that he is a ‘true Welshman’. To be fair, he has also said that he would like to learn some more Welsh, but he has also said that the Welsh language is viewed as being a backward one, that Welsh should not ‘be forced’ upon the people of Wales... a comment not so nice as the one before, one that certainly doesn’t make us feel like giving him a ‘cwtch’. In his article claims that some children in Wales are scared to speak English in their own homes, and that this would be enough to “Warsaw pactâ€? proud. Be honest now, how many times have you been hit with the “Sorry, I don’t speak Welshâ€? statement when you’ve started to speak with someone in

BOB MITCHELL ARLUNYDD ARTIST
I
t was back in 2010 when I first drove through Blaenau Ffestiniog. The rain clouds hung heavily over the mountains and the huge piles of slate-waste that dominate the town. What an astonishing place! If one area of Britain more than anywhere else illustrates how vast the Industrial Revolution had been it was this part of North-West Wales. I later discovered similar landscapes in such towns as Llanberis and Bethesda. The industry had been vast! As a photographer based in a former heavily industrialised part of North-East England, I had spent time around disused mining sites, slag heaps and abandoned holes in the ground as well as working industry, but nothing on this scale and nothing in such a stunning natural environment. I was visiting Wales with a friend who had once worked in London selling Welsh Slate as canapé trays, wine racks and place mats - often to high-end restaurants. We drove straight to the home of his once supplier and now old friend in the mountains. Alan Hicks and his wife Ianto run their small business from a workshop at home. Alan had worked in the quarries for decades before and he splits slate with a masterful hand and keen eye. Looking out over the landscape from there and watching Alan splitting slate convinced me to start what would become a two-year long documentary. Welsh slate is still being quarried although in just a few places in North-Wales, and during that two years I documented the men working up in the mountains. Each trip I stayed at ‘Tudor Lodge’ - a great little place in Porthmadog and each day I set off into the mountains in an old 4x4 to photograph the slate splitters. Spanish and Chinese slate now dominate the market and yet the rock men and splitters still have a twinkle in their eye as they talk of their superior quality ‘old vein’. Tourism rather than industry is now forging its way through the landscape. At Blaenau Ffestiniog a world-class downhill mountain bike run has been created and there are plans for the longest series of zip wires in Europe. Steam trains that once took slate to be shipped across the world at Porthmadog now take daily trips for tourists and enthusiasts. Most importantly Llechwedd Slate Caverns and the National Slate Museum both of which celebrate their 40th anniversaries in
2012, give tourists access to the history and lives of those who created with bare hands those man-made mountains. I worked closely with Llechwedd and The National Slate Museum throughout the project and it was felt we needed a final output - a testament. How could we show a set of photographs in a way that linked the men and those mountains? At this point I should probably thank a man called Michael Bewick - Michael, from Llechwedd, has been my closest ally and support and when I hesitantly made a suggestion of a way to display the work I received a cheerful ‘that shouldn’t be a problem’. Working with the type of equipment I do (a 5x4 view camera) gave me an option - to print huge. It wasn’t long before I found myself dangling from a rope or up a ladder in locations across North-Wales pasting images directly onto rock surfaces above and below ground. Images which were up to 50ft high were placed in former mine and quarry sites - often sites where tourism has found a new secondary industry. Climbing, diving and cave exploration have all made use of what the rock men left behind. The pastings were designed to weather - degrade and disappear - fade away and tear - like old advertising posters. The work is on-going - while images have faded and disappeared in several locations they can still be viewed at Corris Mine Explorers where they survive underground and images will soon be appearing at Llechwedd, Llanberis and Bethesda. However - the Welsh weather dictates the length of the exhibition so keep your eyes peeled and visit soon!

ne of the most obvious factors of the slate culture is it’s Welshness. No other culture is as thoroughly Welsh. In a time of big change, when the Welsh culture was weakening in many areas, the slate mines carried on being the solid foundation to Welshness and it was a massive loss when the deterioration of the slate mines began. In Blaenau there is still the strength of the welsh language, but will this change with the influence of English tourism as it increases in the area? As the focus moves from the heritage and culture of the slate mines and moves onto mountain biking and
tourism, what effect will that have on us as a community? Is it worth losing our Welsh language and past, for tourists? What is more important to us- values of culture or the money that will be filling our pockets as the tourists flow in? These questions are crucial, and these fears are shared with Antur Stiniog who quoted; ‘Its a real danger if our values erode because of globalization and unsustainable tourists.’ Maybe our role is to take a minute to think about these plans and understand the real advantages and give a good name to Blaenau, and since these plans were set up by Antur Stiniog’s panel of peers who are a mixture of local people
who have the task of being the voice of the community, they understand the importance of tradition and culture in Welsh areas. The slate industry contributed to the wealth of words in the Welsh language, and its culture had many terms that are lost by now. But in Blaenau many of these expressions and sayings are still said because of such a strong influence from the slate miners.

he title of Gai Toms new studio album is Bethel recorded at his studio in Tanygrisiau Sbensh. The title of the album is ‘Bethel’ and is divided into two: ‘Bethel Hen’ and ‘Bethel Newydd’. For far too long Welsh bands and performers have failed to write lyrics for their songs. Either they have tried to stuff anything that fits in about subjects that they have no feeling toward, which is far too cheesy or they do the old trick of using ‘humor’ get away with poor standard of lyrics. I’m delighted that Gai Toms continues to be one of the Welsh artists who doesn’t fall within this category. There’s an interesting story to every track and he does not attempt to copy the style of English writing that never seems to work for Welsh words. He has a unique style. There’s a lot of character to this album in its entirety and I can certainly say that ‘Bethel’ is cool (which is more than can be said for a lot of songs I’ve heard on Radio Cymru!). I would recommend any young Welsh artist to listen to ‘Bethel’ as it is a graet example of what a good Welsh album can be. I love the fact that there are so many people from outside included in ‘Bethel’. It brings a lot of variation to the songs and yet does not jump from one place to another, which makes it very easy to listen to the whole thing, especially the second disc. So, I would definitely encourage listening to ‘Bethel’. And if you’re struggling to find a Christmas gift for someone, you will not need to look further afield than ‘Bethel’! It is a collection of songs anyone of any age can enjoy. Favorite tracks? I have 3! Tracks 4 on both disks and ‘Diwrnod Eliffantod’.

I use software from a Swedish company called ‘Propellerhead’. It’s like having all the hardware, but on a laptop screen. What do you use to produce techno music?
Your biggest show?
Hard to choose to be honest! Probably the one that stands out the most for me is ‘House of God’ in Birmingham. A lot of DJs have started their careers around the world because of House of God, for example Residence and Surgeon, so it’s an amazing feeling being able to say that I’ve been on the same stage as them. Favourite artist to listen to when booming down hill?
Surgeon is the favourite!
Outdoor raves or clubs?
Outdoor raves will always be something special for me because that’s where my career all started, but I must admit there’s nothing quite like a club when it’s full, it’s something quite amazing. How long have you been riding?
I started riding motorcross bikes when I was about eleven ‘til I was about sixteen, then i got into downhill biking, and have been since the last twenty years. What got you into biking?
My Dad had a big interest in motorbikes and I was always on the back of his, so from I’d say. I think it’s in my blood the want to go fast on two wheels! What about the DJing? How did you start with that? And what was your inspiration?
I started by holding parties where I lived while I was in college. My inspiration came from listening to DJs, going to raves, to clubs and then I becam a resident DJ in three different clubs in Aberystwyth, and my reputation grew from there and then I started playing across the UK. What’s ‘Freerotation Festival’?
Well it all started at my mates house in Llanidloes, where me and a group of friends, who all had their own style of Techno, House and Dubstep DJing, and we had a annual party. After years of doing that and becoming bigger and bigger every year, we decided to get even bigger and move to Baskerville Hall in Hay-On-Wye, and that’s where it’s been ever since. We invite DJs from across the world to play each year, and over a thousand people come to the festiva over the three days. There are over fifty DJs who play over the three days and they are a mixture of Techno, House and Dubstep. It’s been running for seven years and it continues to grow every year!
