Content Welcome.. & Features to December!

I

f you are wondering where 2016 has gone, so are we!

A year of some very important world events and changes, some good, some to shape things to come, some sad and tragic, some to yet have an impact. But amongst all this, if we look closer to home and find ourselves in December with our health and loved ones intact, we should always count our blessings. In today’s world, we all need to look harder for the happy times and beauty in life but it is there and this is the season to be mindful of that. This year saw the launch of the new BedsLife Magazine and we hope you are enjoying it so far. In the Christmas edition we focus on community spirit and helping other less fortunate. Our town has a good network of people who do fantastic work, the unsung heroes and if you would like to help or volunteer there is always our opportunities page and the charities we feature each month always need more people to support. Christmas is a time when there is much expectation, pressure and everyone is so busy – our articles on Christmas spirit and mindful living may help you to say calm when all around is chaos! We have some great competitions to enter too and a bumper crossword prize of £50. The season involves lots of entertainment, fun, food and drink, parties – all of which you will find in this month’s issue and Our What’s On lists local craft fairs, church services, concerts and community events. We would like to wish all our readers, advertisers, contributors and friends a very Merry Christmas.

The real

Christmas Spirit

C

hristmas is a time for giving. Watching TV, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this means ‘giving lots of expensive stuff’! From September, adverts are barking about the expensive perfumes, toys, gadgets and more that are all ‘must haves’ for Christmas. However, the real spirit of the season can be found outside of the supermarkets and retail industry.

We all get very busy during the year and it’s easy to lose touch with our own families and friends, let alone people we don’t know so well. But December is a great time to take stock and make that time. Book in a date to catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while, go round to your Nan’s with some old photos and have a reminisce, knock on your neighbours door and invite them round for a slice of cake. Connect with people and you soon realise that the commercialism of Christmas is valued far less than giving your real time and effort to the people around you.

More and more companies and organisations work hard throughout the year to ensure people on their own or in a situation less fortunate than others, are looked after at Christmas. And trends over the last few years have shown that more and more of us are interested in getting involved. Here are just a few ways we as individuals (without having to spend lots of money), can make a difference.

Instead of popping to the shops for some more last minute presents or going online to search for deals; why not take the time to instead look through your own belongings and donate things you no longer use or need to charity shops or the local homeless shelter. Look through your cupboards and see what can be donated to food banks. For you it can just mean a bit of a needed clear out, for those receiving your donations it can make a huge difference.

Check your nearest shelter who are always looking for volunteers to help serve Christmas dinner. Kitchen duties may not seem much fun but dishing out seasonal food to those who would otherwise not be able to afford a meal, or are alone during the holiday period will soon find you immersed in community and in doing so you may realise how lucky you are and what a difference such a small gesture can make to others less fortunate.

4

We all need to watch our money; but there is a big difference between 'cost' and ‘value’. We could all do with reducing the ‘cost’ of Christmas time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t increase the true ‘value’ of the holiday season.

The Harpur Trust unwraps its musical gift to Bedford schoolchildren

T

The Harpur Trust has been celebrating its 450th anniversary during 2016 and is helping to bring a special children’s concert series to Bedford as the final event. Orchestra Unwrapped, the Philharmonia’s unique concert series for schoolchildren aged 7-11, will take place at Bedford Corn Exchange for invited schools during the afternoon of Wednesday 7th December at 1pm. Thanks to the Trust, the Philharmonia has commissioned presenter and music education specialist Paul Rissmann to write a brand new audience participation piece for the concert, to which four local schools have contributed. The concert features the Philharmonia, full symphony orchestra, and Paul Rissmann guides the children through a fun and interactive journey of the Orchestra's instruments, players and music, complemented with a giant screen of visuals to enhance the learning experience for the schoolchildren. The project offers children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, access to high quality, music education through a dynamic programme of concerts, bespoke cross-curricular educational materials for the classroom, teacher training and online learning guides. The aim is to offer every child the same opportunity irrespective of their social, ethnic or economic background. Orchestra Unwrapped was founded in Leicester and 15,500 children have attended these 8

concerts since the series was founded five years ago and The Harpur Trust initiative now brings this to Bedford for the very first time. The project also includes learning resources for children and teachers for use in both the classroom and at home. INSET teacher training equips teachers with the skills to maximise the concert experience for their pupils, enhance their knowledge and appreciation of music and develop their personal creativity, expression, confidence and group work skills. Alexandra Brierley, Director of Education at the Philharmonia, said, "Orchestra Unwrapped brings the symphony orchestra into the curriculum and class-room to benefit children and teachers alike. We are delighted that, with the support of The Harpur Trust, the Philharmonia is able to bring this to Bedford for the first time, offering children from all over Bedford a chance to experience a world-class symphony orchestra.” David Russell, Chief Executive of The Harpur Trust added “All our anniversary events this year were put on specifically for the community of Bedford Borough and they have all reflected our mission to break down barriers, create opportunities and provide education. Orchestra Unwrapped does all of these things and so much more and I cannot think of a better way to end our celebration year”. The Philharmonia evening performance concert tickets for December 7th at 7.30pm are available from Bedford Corn Exchange 01234 344813 www.bedfordcornexchange.co.uk

Views from

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... 2016 – A YEAR FOR THE OUTSIDERS.

W

hen 2016 began, I do not think anyone thought it would be one for the history books. It seemed pretty routine. The UK had a settled government, the country would bumble along to decide narrowly to remain in the EU, and a fractious US election would end with Hillary Clinton overcoming the challenge of whoever the Republicans put up, after Donald Trump’s unpleasant campaign had finally derailed.

And Leicester City’s five month run at the top of the table would give unfashionable clubs of the Premier League some hope, despite them falling away over the Easter fixtures to hand Spurs the title. Well, some year to look back upon! It has been the year of the outsider, with Leicester City showing the way in perhaps the most politically neutral event, for almost all football supporters loved their run and success, although at the time of writing it seems a one off. The other two events will have more long lasting consequences, and of course they are tied together. A world order created after 1945 is coming to an end, an era of progressive, moderately centrist western politics tied to a liberal, market orientated economic system dominated by the United States. In the case of both the UK and the US, a public, persuaded that they were being taken for granted by an ‘elite’ based in boardrooms and Westminster/Washington, turned away from the offering of their political establishment leaders to take a plunge into the unknown. It is as yet hard to know precisely what will happen, and predictions are now rather useless. Politicians 10

like me have some serious soul searching to do, as do our electorates. We can get a picture of what people do not like, but it is not yet clear what they want. Slogans such as ‘take back control’ and ‘make America great again’ are just smart phrases, not a concrete programme of action in a complex world. However there is profound shock to the system. Just as in the UK, politicians in the US and I suspect Europe, have discovered they do not know their own country as well as they did, and now have to work out what this means. They will need the same sense of humility as politicians need to show here, to listen and understand events. We head towards an uncertain 2017. We will therefore need some rocks on which to stand, of which our families, our local communities and festivals such as Christmas, form a good base. Let us gather around us those people and things we hold dear, and make the most of the New Year, and its opportunities. My very good wishes to all of you.

Alistair Burt

Money matters By Martin Lewis

Saving not Spending! I

n a world of rock-bottom interest rates, you need to put your money into the right type of savings account with the best possible rate. Here are some top tips.

a few. The main advantage is they tend to pay much higher rates of interest than standard deals.

Savings interest is now paid tax free

You may want to consider getting a fixed-rate savings account where the amount you earn is set in stone over a fixed time period. However, you can't usually access the cash during that time, and even if you can, the penalties can be large. Usually fixed rates are higher than easy access, so they can be good deals. However, if normal savings rates were to increase during that time, you'd be unable to switch.

Since 6 April 2016, the new personal savings allowance (PSA) has turned on its head. Now all savings interest will be paid gross, ie, there'll be no tax taken off. This works for ALL interest – not just savings accounts, but bank accounts, credit unions & peer-to-peer savings. Share dividends aren't included. Basic 20% rate taxpayers can earn £1,000/yr interest tax-free. Higher 40% rate taxpayers can earn £500/year interest tax-free and top 45% rate taxpayers don't get a PSA, so all interest is taxable. Cash ISAs, premium bonds and other tax-free savings interest DON'T count towards the £1,000 (or £500) PSA limit so you can get this interest too.

Have you used your 2016/17 ISA allowance? It allows you to save and never pay tax on interest

Can you lock the cash away? Fixed savings can give a better return

Got kids? Encourage them to start saving If you've got children aged under 18, then you could consider opening a specialist savings account for them. Though they tend to mirror adult accounts (in that you can get easy-access, fixed-rate, ISAs etc), some of the current rates actually beat their grown-up counterparts. Plus, it can be a great way to teach your kids the merits of saving early.

A cash ISA is simply a savings account where you never pay tax on the interest. Anyone aged 16 or over can put up to £15,240 into their cash ISA during the current tax year.

Can you put money aside each month? Consider a regular saver This is a specific product for putting £10-£500 in every month (maximum deposits vary by account). If you want to save more, combine 12

CHARITY

The reality of ending up homeless can happen

. r a e y f o e m i t y at an

T

he charity, JustUs Bedford, believe homeless people probably need two things as much as anything else – a home to move into and a fair chance at keeping it.

Homelessness in Bedford is still on the rise. Current official estimates suggest that around 50 people sleep rough in Bedford on any given night, and many hundreds more sleep on sofas, in shelters or in accommodation where they are at risk of serious abuse. 16

What they do

JustUs has worked in Bedford since 2014 to establish a new way of working with homeless people to help them move into their own accommodation. So far, all their clients have been housed, almost exclusively, in their own accommodation. The team have decades' worth of experience working with homeless people and have established an effective and economic way to help clients into their own home. The charity aim to help when specialist knowledge is required, but give clients space

CHARITY to sort themselves out when it is realistic for them to do so, avoiding the potential risk of service-dependency.

Who they help

A few years ago in Bedford, a heavily pregnant lady’s collar bone was broken (among other injuries) after a string of physical assaults by her partner. She fled her home with her 3 year-old daughter. She found her and her daughter left homeless, sleeping on her friend’s sofa in a one bed flat, with her daughter sleeping on an airbed. She was finally housed with the support of a friend. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident and the JustUs charity supports others who find themselves in this situation through no fault of their own, supporting homeless people to obtain legal assistance from first contact through to the point where they are happily housed. It is often nighon impossible to afford all the expenses that come with homelessness – meaning that homeless people are at risk of living in a cold empty shell and never making it their home. Sadly, it is a well-known phenomenon that homeless people often abandon accommodation that has the potential of being absolutely fine.

Success Stories

accommodation. Once in, the charity were able to access furniture from Emmaus (kindly given free of charge) and carpets for his concrete floors. He said he’d ‘hit the jackpot’ as he had had contact with many homelessness charities over the years but had never actually been supported to get his own place. On another occasion, JustUs were supporting a family who moved into temporary accommodation which needed new carpets and only had two lightbulbs in the whole house. With next-to-no money, lightbulbs suddenly become completely unaffordable and living in the dark doesn’t tend to do wonders for mental health. JustUS were able to supply some (energy efficient) lightbulbs and they blitzed the whole house too. JustUs believe it is little things like this that makes the burden of enduring the experience of having no home a little more manageable.

If you would like to know more about the charity or would like to help in any way please contact them via the FB page. JustUs Bedford Reg Charity number:1166198

in the moment

he past is history The future a mystery Today is a gift That’s why it’s called the present

If you’re too busy dwelling on the past or thinking about the future, you won’t be able to fully appreciate the moment and notice all the good things around you.

external observer, and just observe the moment. What do you see, hear, and smell? Without judging how it feels, just absorb what is around you – and if you notice your mind wandering, bring yourself back. Just keep focusing on the moment.

Tips on Mindful Living

Stop and look around. Notice beautiful shapes, colours, and details. Notice things you normally take for granted, like sunlight reflecting off someone’s hair. Think of all the little things you’d miss if you were blind. It’s often the minutest joys that are missed the most. Smell the roses. And the food. And the air. Recognise the smells that make you feel good: a freshly cut lawn, the air right after it rains, a fresh pot of coffee.

Research indicates that living in the moment can make people happier, because most negative thoughts concern the past or the future. If you hoist yourself into the awareness of the present moment, worrying melts away.

Savour your food, slowly. Enjoy. Identify flavours. Appreciate how they intermingle. Take notes from wine enthusiasts; they know how to enjoy the subtlest of flavours.

With the fast pace of modern life, it isn’t always easy to slow down and appreciate the moment however it is really worth investing effort in being able to do that.

Appreciate the sense of touch. How do leaves, blankets, lotions feel against your skin? How many times during the day do people touch you affectionately, and you barely notice?

You can become mindful at any time you like just by paying attention to your immediate experience and situation. You can do it right now. What’s happening this instant? Think of yourself as an

Listen to more than music. Listen when you think it’s quiet, and you’ll discover it’s not really all that quiet. You might hear the wind; leaves rustling, people laughing.

Christmas!

Festive food this

S

andy Boyd, manager of Summerhill Farm Shop in Cardington, tells us what should be on your table this Christmas.

to give the best flavour. We offer a wide range of traditional sausages in a variety of flavours, as well as the essential chipolatas and pigs in blankets to accompany your festive lunch.

Christmas at Summerhill is a very special time. The shop and delicatessen is brimming with hampers, fine wines, local beers and ciders, artisan cheeses, smoked fish, locally made mince pies and lots of tasty treats!

Once again our Traditional White and Bronze Turkeys are coming from Southall’s Farm, in Great Barford, where they’ve been carefully reared to ensure that you have a quality bird. The bronze birds are slower growing which provides a better flavour and a slightly firmer texture. We offer whole turkeys, turkey crowns, boned and rolled turkey breast and can even create special three to five bird roasts.

We have been working with local, regional and national producers to source the best selection of quality seasonal food and drinks. The autumn and winter season provides us with much loved root vegetables, sprout stalks, brassicas and not forgetting our delicious Bedfordshire potatoes. Look out for Alistair Finlay’s sweet tasting red onions grown in the fields behind our shop. This unique onion has taken 20 years to perfect and won’t make you cry when you cut into it! Our butchery is at the heart of what we do at Summerhill. Our team of butchers take carefully reared meat and game straight from the Southill Estate and tenant farms and use their traditional butchery skills to create premium cuts of quality meat. Our sausages are made from scratch using quality shoulder and belly pork from local pigs 32

Our primary source of beef comes from the British White Herd on the Southill Estate. We hang all the beef for a minimum of 21 days and often more for the prime hindquarter cuts and ribs of beef to ensure that the meat is both tender and tasty. Our popular hampers are brimming with a delicious selection of the finest festive products and make the perfect gift for all your friends and family. Ready made hampers priced from £15 to £50 or why not select your own products and basket from the shop and we will be happy to make it for you. Magic!

FOOD & DRINK

Turkey

M

y Gran insisted on soaking her Christmas turkey in brine (or ‘broin’ as she used to call it, being a Birmingham girl). I never really understood why until I tried it for myself.

You need 750g salt for a large turkey. Use a large watertight plastic box and dissolve the salt in 4 pints/2 litres of boiling water. Add 9 pints/5.5 litres of cold water and leave to cool. Immerse the turkey in the brine, breast side down. Cover with a lid and put in a cool place like the garage for 24 hours. You might want to seal the lid or weight it down to prevent mice from gaining access! The next day empty the brine and pat the turkey dry and refrigerate overnight. Remove the bird a couple of hours before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature, and prepare in your usual way. So why go to this trouble? Here comes the science bit! Roasted turkey can be dry and tough because it’s lean and we tend to err on the side of caution with cooking times, (no-one wants to serve up a plate of festive salmonella right?). Moisture loss is inevitable when you cook any type of muscle fibre. Heat causes individual coiled proteins in the fibres to unwind (the technical term is denature), then join together with one another, resulting in shrinkage and moisture loss. Meat loses about 30 percent of its weight during cooking but by brining first, you can reduce this moisture loss to as little as 15 percent. The main reason for this is because the dissolved salt causes some of the proteins in muscle fibres to pre-unwind and swell. As 34

they unwind, the bonds that held the protein unit together as a bundle break. Water from the brine binds directly to the proteins, and then gets trapped between them when the meat cooks and the unwound proteins bind together. As long as you don't overcook the meat, the natural juices will be retained. All this ensures moister, juicier results. But what if you don’t have the container or the inclination to soak your bird? Is there an easier way? Yes, you can ‘dry-brine’, that is pre-salt the turkey. This seasons the meat like the wet brine, but does not use any water. Instead, it involves rubbing salt and seasonings directly onto the meat and / or skin, and then letting the meat rest in the refrigerator before cooking. For a 15lb /7Kg turkey you need about 3 tablespoons of salt, ¾ teaspoon of ground black pepper and herbs of your choice. Pat the turkey dry and then rub the salt mixture liberally over the surface. I like to rub about a third of it under the skin but if you don’t want to go to the bother of separating the skin from the meat it’s fine to just rub it over the skin. You need to allow time for the salt to penetrate the meat so allow a day’s brining time per 5lb /2 1/4 Kg of turkey. Dry brining has the advantage of producing extremely crispy skin, and we all know that’s the best bit! Final tip: Make sure you use an unseasoned turkey. Avoid pre-prepared or self-basting turkeys as they have been injected with brine. Enjoy! By Louise Addison

A visit to...

The Knife & Cleaver

T

he recently refurbished Knife and Cleaver set in the pretty village of Houghton Conquest offers the perfect setting for any occasion. The stylish, contemporary decor and relaxed surroundings allows you to enjoy lunch, a romantic dinner for two or a birthday meal or group event. With a selected menu and a wide selection of wines, beers and cocktails, the scene is set for any dining experience. We went along to sample the latest dishes on the menu. Spoilt for choice on starters, we finally opted for the Devon Crab Cocktail and the Forest Mushrooms on toast accompanied by a crispy hen’s egg and Parmesan. The crab was light, fresh and tasty, presented with tiny sea herbs; just delicious. The hen’s egg is one of my favourites and was not a disappointment, perfectly cooked with the crispiest of light breadcrumbs and complementing the forest mushrooms beautifully. For mains, the Pan Fried Cornish Cod with parsnip puree, savoy cabbage and Cider & Clam sauce and a side of colcannon mash and a classic Dry-aged Sirloin Steak with chips and an Heirloom tomato, mozzarella and basil salad. The cod was perfection, cooked beautifully and melted in the mouth, probably the best I have tasted; a very stylish, light dish which was flattered by the hearty colcannon mash. 38

A steak is always a good measure of standard, especially if it is not a steak restaurant. The sirloin was spot on medium and a lovely cut. Great big fat chips too! The whole meal was faultless. It was lovely to experience friendly, attentive service that was efficient yet still relaxed and not at any point did we feel hurried. There was an enjoyable space between the starters and mains and after checking all was well, we were left to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. After all that, we wondered if we could manage dessert but we were so glad we did. Not having a very sweet tooth, we both opted for the same, the sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. Oh and were we glad we both had it because it was sublime! The pudding tasted amazing, rich toffee flavours and the praline topping gave a welcome contrast to the texture. The clotted cream just made for a match in heaven. 10/10 for the pudding – we would go again just for that! So, if you want to experience great food in a lovely setting, head to the Knife and Cleaver and you won’t be disappointed. It really was EPIC. Helping our local Christmas in a Box

G

et a box, wrap it, fill it and make a difference to the lives of local people in crisis this Christmas.

For a number of years, All Nations Church have been privileged to provide local people in crisis with food hampers at Christmas. For 2016 we are building on the success of last year’s Christmas in a Box where we distributed 600 boxes, reaching over 1,500 people in Bedford. Locally Bedford foodbank is seeing an increasing number of clients on a regular basis. Here at All Nations Church, we want to further support the foodbank’s work, help their clients and other vulnerable people during the festive season. We are thrilled that as in previous years this project has been supported by a number of local schools, businesses and organisations, and that number continues to grow.

To do this, we need your help

There are a number of ways you can help out and be involved: • You can purchase the items on our shopping lists on our website and donate them in an opened box wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper. These are the Family Shopping List and the Couples Shopping List. • Buy one or two items from the list and donate them to Christmas in a Box and we will make up a box for you. • Donate the cost of a box (£30 for a family

or £12 for a couple). We will then purchase the contents on your behalf and make the box up. If you choose to give by cheque, please make your cheque payable to ‘All Nations Church, Bedford’ and place in an envelope marked ‘Christmas in a Box’. If you would like to give via electronic payment, you can find the details online. If you choose to get a box and fill it, or even donate a few items to the project, please return them to All Nations Church on: Friday 9th December, 1pm – 4pm or Sunday 11th December, 3pm – 6pm

If you would like to get involved or like further details, please visit www.allnationsbedford.org/christmasinabox Or email christmasinabox@allnationsbedford.org

communities Supporting the Homeless and needy this Christmas

T

he Prebend Day Centre has been assisting individuals in need, hardship and distress since 1992. The centre provides basic amenities and support services to anyone in need aged 16 years and above. Crisis knows no boundaries or seasons; therefore the charity opens its doors 365 days of the year to care for some the most vulnerable and socially excluded individuals in Bedford. The centre assists around 700 different individuals a year. People seeking help from the centre typically suffer with a variety of problems ranging from homelessness, housing problems, debt, unemployment, mental health disabilities, physical health disabilities, drug and alcohol dependence, relationship breakdowns and social exclusion. In December the charity runs its Christmas Relief in Bedford (C.R.I.B.) Appeal. The purpose of the appeal is to request assistance with the increased running costs over the winter months and to enable the charity to provide a special festive celebration period between 25th December and 2nd January. During the festive period, the charity provides all of its normal amenities and support services as well as special hot cooked two course meals, unlimited refreshments and goodies, packed dinners

handed out on departure and a visit from Father Christmas and gifts on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The centre is very grateful for financial donations, as well as gifts of chocolate, toiletries and new warm clothing. If you would like to help or donate to our C.R.I.B. Appeal, please send cheques and other gifts to us at our Prebend Street office. Or alternatively you can make financial contributions on our website at www.prebendcentre.org.uk by clicking on the 'Donate' button. On behalf of all the service users, volunteers, staff and trustees we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.'

Review Inferno

Inferno is an adaptation of the Dan Brown book starring the hero of ‘Da vinci Code’, Robert Langdon. The Da Vinci Code was a literary blockbuster that somehow hit the zeitgeist of the moment back when it came out in the early 2000’s, much like ’50 Shades of Gray’ did a few years back. It wasn’t particularly well written but it was a page turner that kept you glued to the page. Inferno is pretty much the same kind of thing as Da Vinci Code. Langdon has a female partner, he runs about a lot, he visits museums and churches, he deciphers obscure clues (the leaving of which really doesn’t make any sense at all in the context of this film) and is chased by gun toting bad guys. The problem is it is all the same as before. Da Vinci was a good read and a passable film and if Inferno had come 10 years or so ago it might have been as good. The problem is that action movies have moved on and regurgitating the same old thing now just doesn’t work. Inferno is an ok movie but if you’ve seen Da Vinci Code this will offer nothing new at all.

The

khill Book Bug Bricreviews… The Book of Hygge by Louisa Thomsen Brits You may have seen the Danish word hygge (pronounced ‘hue-gah’) and wondered what it means. This little book by Louise Thomsen Brits is the perfect introduction to a major part of the Danish way of life. Hygge is something that can be experienced alone, with close family or within groups. This is something the Danes work together to create, although it’s not something that can be forced and should feel effortless. To ‘Hygge’ is to find contentment in simple things, sharing a meal or enjoying a cup of coffee, making space in our own lives for peace or considering the well being of those around us. And while these things aren’t totally alien to the British way of thinking, they are possibly somewhat neglected. The book is illustrated with photographs that the author hopes will evoke a feeling of hygge and includes quotes from various sources to help us think about how we might create hygge in our everyday lives. In Denmark, Christmas is the most ‘hyggeligt’ time of the year so I wish you lots of Julehygge and a Happy New Year! Sadly, this will be the last review from the Book Bug. I hope I’ve helped you discover some interesting new books. Don’t forget you can find more information about books and reading on the Virtual Library at www.bedford.gov.uk/libraries. 57

Senior Snippets Tips to help make a will

t isn’t an easy subject to discuss, but it is a very important one. Planning ahead and making a will ensures that when you die your estate is shared according to your wishes. It is important to remember that if you don’t write a will, everything you own will be shared out in a standard way defined by the law – which isn’t always the way you might want. Choose your executors well. These are the people who'll look after the financial process when you die and the people who will sort paying off the mortgage and/or other debts out of your estate. Decide who you want to get what and when. Planning who will inherit what and when makes it clear what your wishes are, and makes it easier for

those left behind to deal with the effects of your death. Use a professional. It is recommended to seek professional legal advice from a qualified and regulated solicitor. Ensure your will is signed and witnessed. Your will must be signed by you as well as witnessed by two independent witnesses. Take care of your will. Decide how to look after your will and let your executor know where it is, usually with your solicitor but make sure you keep a copy. PETS

Keep your pet safe

this Christmas! C

hristmas is often a time when households are busy and food is plentiful. Take care to make sure that your pet does not eat anything unsuitable!

Chocolate

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine which can cause vomiting, fast heart rate, and muscle tremors. In severe cases dogs may go on to have fits. Dark chocolate has the highest concentration of theobromine, so poisoning can occur if only a small amount is eaten. If your pet has consumed chocolate it is important to contact your vet promptly with the details of the type, amount and time that the chocolate was eaten. Most patients make a full recovery with supportive treatment.

Grapes/raisins/currants/sultanas

Grapes and their dried relatives can cause serious kidney damage in dogs. This poisoning is unusual in that some dogs eat grapes regularly with no ill effects, whilst other dogs may develop complete kidney failure after eating only one or two grapes. At the moment there is no way of predicting which dogs will be affected so it is safest to completely avoid feeding these fruits to dogs. Any dogs that

do eat these fruits should receive immediate veterinary attention. Unfortunately many dogs are tempted by a fruit cake or mince pie at Christmas, so it is especially important to be vigilant around these treats.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sweetener used in low sugar / diabetic products such as cakes, biscuits and gum. If dogs eat products containing xylitol they can suffer from weakness, seizures, and liver failure. Some dogs make a full recovery, but those with more advanced liver failure do not, so prompt treatment is essential.

Obstructions from eating inedible objects

Cats or dogs eating tinsel, decorations, ribbon, bones or toys may develop an obstruction in their intestines. The main sign of this problem would be persistent vomiting and lethargy and an operation would be required to remove the blockage.

Acorn House is ideally placed to offer help and advice over the Christmas period. Our own vets and nurses are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Contact us on 01234 261839.

for Christmas!

A new cat is not just

W

e’re all familiar with the campaign that tells us that ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ and the same applies to cats. It’s never a good idea to give a pet as a present. Responsible pet ownership can be quite costly and time consuming, and a potential owner needs time to consider the implications for their own lifestyle.

It’s not a good idea not to introduce a new cat or kitten to your home over the Christmas period anyway as you will probably be very busy, and won’t have so much time to devote to the newcomer. But if you already have a cat, look out over the festive period to make sure your feline friend enjoys it as much as you do....

Poisonous plants and foliage

will probably get an electric shock if they chew through the thin wire.

Presents and wrappings

Cats are often tempted by wrapping and brightly coloured ribbons on gifts but any bits of wrapping accidentally ingested could be a problem.

Diet

Try and keep your cat to their normal diet over Christmas. They do not need to deviate from their usual meals in favour of something rich that will upset their digestive system. No doubt they will appreciate a little of your cooked turkey, which is fine for them, but don’t try tempting them with rich treats, you will regret the consequences!

www.bedford.cats.org.uk 0345 260 2505

One of the most poisonous plants for a cat is the Poinsettia, a shiny, red-leafed household Christmas plant. Put this well out of reach as any nibbling could be fatal for your cat. Decorations using holly, ivy, mistletoe or yew are also poisonous and many cats will chew or play with the foliage. If you suspect your cat has nibbled at any of your plants you should phone your vet as quickly as possible.

Christmas trees

The tree will present a huge temptation to a cat! They will try and climb it or play with the shiny decorations. Any made of breakable material can shatter when they hit the floor, and again, your cat could swallow small pieces or get them stuck in a paw. Lights can present a real hazard, as your cat 67

Your Tarotscopes for December 2016... by Susan Peppiatt Sagittarius

This month shows as one which has to be allowed to mellow before it shows its true colours. It starts off with a sense of missing out or missing someone, and eventually shows signs of change for the better. It’s also time to look after health, and get old health issues looked at.

Capricorn

Looking forward to less work and a time of holiday shows as important; also that it’s to not the time to speak out on something rashly. The advice is to enjoy the break, and sit back and wait for other people to jump into something with both feet and stand around prepared to save the day when necessary.

Aquarius

A comfortable month is shown for Aquarians who want to travel, although every aspect of life shows as needing to be appraised this month, nothing needs actually doing until the month is out, so time to rest and prepare for what the next year has in store, especially where work is concerned.

Pisces

There is a fair bit of pressure from partners or family who seem to think that they are never put first. No matter which way you go, it looks as if someone is a little disappointed. Try, but don’t wear yourself out. Someone who is difficult to please will always be better when allowed their own way, but then it doesn’t work for everyone else. 68

Aries

Leo

December shows a sign of gentle comfort and safety, when long expected dreams seem to finally be about to take effect. Although the past is hard to move on from, and it’s been a little fraught and difficult, this is not a time to doubt luck or demand logic, but just time to go with the flow, and enjoy the ride.

It's time to think creatively this month, but that doesn’t mean shutting people out and avoiding them. New projects and new work show around some and the thought process which is necessary to prepare for it looks as important as the work itself. Take time to think things through properly.

Taurus

Virgo

A loving and happy month but extremely busy with little time to rest. For most Taureans this will be the ideal way to be. While they enjoy luxury they are easily bored by routine, this month shows a month when routines are very intertwined and unusual and the adrenalin can rush in, making things happen.

A great month where happiness is concerned, but a little daunting where finances are highlighted, so this month has its ups and downs, before it settles to a good state around the middle of the month, enabling a festive season which is memorable because of a lack of angst.

Gemini

Libra

Challenging previously well thought out routines would seem pretty normal for some Geminis, who regularly like to see both sides of arguments and will stir up new arguments before making their decisions. This month is a little extreme, but ultimately satisfying because of these feelings.

Cancer

Older children or people who act like teenagers are focused on this month for Cancerians, It looks like time to extend a word or two of praise where it is due for someone who is about to give up on an ambition, to give the confidence to continue with their dreams.

Study and learning are the main focus for the cards this month, showing a route which is fairly stressful but very worthwhile coming into range especially for older people. The joys of opening the mind to new things, and coming into contact with new people are also starred.

Scorpio

A time for intelligence, not emotions to rule, especially in partnerships and relationships. While the cards advise caution in making sudden actions they also advise to sit and think things through and work things out rather than acting on any kind of whim, as this sort of action would soon be regretted.

Prevention of damage is always favourable but trees should also be checked following high winds.

What to look for Key indicators of tree damage and failure are: • Cracks and splits in structural sections of the tree. • Roots lifting at the base of the stem • Broken limbs in the canopy Structural damage can be limited with regular pruning, structural supports and preventative maintenance. The loss of a tree can cause serious Health & Safety issues as well as the potential loss of a beautiful tree from the landscape.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Christmas

GARDENING

P

Orchids

erhaps orchids are not traditionally associated with Christmas but if you want something that can last for years with the minimum of fuss, it's worth choosing an orchid.

Moth orchids are widely grown and well-suited to life indoors, requiring a minimum temperature of 16C. These plants don't have a yearly cycle of producing flowers, and can develop flower spikes at any time. Cool nights are important, so allow a dip of a few degrees. Slipper orchids (Paphiopedilums) with their waxy leaves and lip-shaped pouch at the front of the flower, are again becoming popular. The flowers are usually long-lasting and can remain in bloom for months. Some people think they need a lot of maintenance but these elegant plants, which originate from South-East Asia, are actually very tough and don't like too much fuss. It's generally overwatering that kills them, and they are becoming easier to grow as nurseries bring out new varieties. Most hybrids come from hot, humid forests and like a warm, tropical climate. It's a myth that they must be shaded; they do well on windowsills and flower more freely if given some sun. However, it's best to keep them out of direct sunshine in the summer – and don't make the mistake of moving them from somewhere very shaded into direct sunlight, or they will suffer leaf scorch. Orchids should just be watered once a week by immersing the pot into a bowl of tepid water until it's moist all through. Then lift the pot out and sit it on a draining board for a few minutes before putting it back into its permanent pot. The plant should be allowed to dry out between watering. Once they've finished blooming, cut the flowered stems back to just above a joint, two up from the base, using a pair of sharp secateurs. It should draw up another spike within a few weeks, although it may not show any signs of life for several months. Moth orchids should be repotted about once a year – you can buy specific compost for orchids from garden centres. It's expensive, but worth it as it has the right mix of nutrients. 76

edfordshire Police has joined calls for residents to help prevent firearms from falling into the hands of terrorists and criminal gangs.

A new campaign by the National Crime Agency and National Counter Terrorism Policing, called #GunsOffOurStreets, urges the public to call with any information about illegally held weapons. It is supporting a social media campaign alongside and Bedfordshire Police has its own team of specialist officers dedicated to clamping down on guns and gangs called the Boson team. DI Duncan Young, who heads the team said: “We have been working incredibly hard to combat guns and criminal gangs in Bedfordshire and our message to residents is have the courage to contact us. We will treat your information in confidence and act on it.” Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, said: “In

the UK our detectives have a unique tactical advantage in countering terrorism. The relatively low level of weapons, especially automatics, compared to Europe and America provides more opportunity to intercept terrorists before they acquire them. But we cannot be complacent and intensified counter-firearms operations are essential to maintain this advantage. We need more help from the public and are appealing for people to come forward with information that will help keep communities safer. Our message to the public is this: ‘If you know anyone who may own or have access to an illegal firearm then please call Crimestoppers. Your call could help save lives’.”

Anyone with information about guns in Bedfordshire should call 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 080 555 111. In an emergency always dial 999.

BEDFORD A huge crowd will be expected on the day – more than 4000 rugby fans attended the New Year’s Day encounter last season – so be sure to buy your discounted ticket online now for this, and every Bedford Blues game. Talking of Christmas, have you bought your loved ones their presents yet? Well the Blues may have just the stocking filler that you are looking for. The Bedford Blues online store is back, bigger and better than ever with all of your favourite apparel and accessories available to buy in plenty of time for Christmas.

W

ith Christmas just around the corner, Bedford Blues are gearing up for a fun-filled festive period with a mouth-watering tie against Jersey Reds on Boxing Day.

Yes, there may be a fuzzy head and the odd stomach doing somersaults, but Boxing Day at Goldington Road is the perfect tonic that everyone needs as you look to dodge turkey sandwiches and fixing the brand new toys that the kids broke within an hour of opening them. What’s more, Bedford will be looking for a certain amount of revenge on the Channel Island team who managed to repel a late Blues surge when the two teams met back in September in St Peter. 84

Powered by our partner Shopify with support from No Nonsense Technology, the new-look store offers a much simpler, more userfriendly shopping experience for Blues fans who can select from several collections. To take a closer inspection, simply click on the product that you are interested in, hover over

B

BLUES the picture for a full view, and then add the item to the basket before progressing to the checkout. No need for logins or passwords, just straight forward shopping for a better ease of purchase. The online shop is stocked with the new merchandise range including the new Blues home jersey and has plenty of options for adults and kids alike with more items being added to the shop soon including branded coffee cups, water bottles, special offer clothing and some special Christmas deals. Speaking about the refreshed online store, Blues Operations Manager Gareth Alred said: “We would like to thank Justin from local firm No Nonsense Technology and one of our new Directors Leigh Mansell for helping us get the new online shop off the ground and for investing time and energy into the project. "Whilst the design may be simple, the functionality is far superior to our last store and we hope supporters will find the site easy to navigate and make purchases. The site is also mobile friendly so Blues fans can shop anywhere on the go on all smart devices.

“On top of this, the site is far more interactional and will provide customers with live confirmation of orders, fulfilment notices and tracking numbers once your items have been posted.” COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

To visit the new online shop just visit www.bedfordrugby.co.uk and click on the web banner on the homepage. You can also visit the club shop on match day to check out the new items or visit the Blues when they attend the winter market in Bedford town centre.

Eagles The

T

he dark long nights of winter are well and truly open us and for Bedford Town Football Club, this means the season is approaching its half way point. 2016 will go down as a year of inconsistency and frustration for most people connected with the club, but the positives that can be taken forward will mean 2017 is a positive year for the Eagles. Having finished the season so well in April, the start of 2016/17 was extremely disappointing. The first three league games saw defeat for the Eagles at Farnborough and at home to Royston and Northwood. Early exits in the FA Cup and FA Trophy to AFC Dunstable and Hanwell Town left the club without a major cup run. However, the league form was positive and a run of 7 games without defeat in September and October lead to a surge up the EvoStik Division One Central table. It will be important this form continues as we head into the new year. October saw the Eagles continue their unbeaten run in some style. A thrilling 3:3 draw against Uxbridge, having been 3:1 down and three days later, a disappointing last minute draw against Barton Rovers, left Bedford Town with disappointment at four points dropped across the two games. Four points that would have

taken the Eagles into the playoffs. This good run came to an end on the 5th November, which proved an afternoon not to remember. Kidlington, struggling down the lower end of the league, visited the Eyrie and walked away with a 2:0 win on an afternoon to forget for all involved. The following Tuesday and the Eagles travelled to St Ives Town in the Southern League Cup and again the result was disappointing. Despite being competitive for long periods of the game, a poor spell of 20 minutes in the second half saw the Eagles concede three goals and exit the League Cup at the second stage. November 18th saw another popular quiz night at the Eyrie. The next one in the New Year is planned for 27th January and starts at 7:30pm. For further information, please contact Gerry on 01234 381213. Finally, we would like to wish all supporters and the public of Bedford a very Happy Christmas and wish everyone the best for 2017. The Club would like to thank our major sponsors, KCW Windows and Paul Riches Skips for their invaluable continued support. As well as our other sponsorship partners, we hope that the New Year is a prosperous for all businesses connected with the Eagles. 87
