Let ’s Walk Bedfordshire Walking Festival 2017
T
he annual nine day Bedfordshire Walking Festival starts on Saturday 9th September with walks every day till Sunday afternoon 17th September.
Spokesperson for the festival said “ One of the great things about the festival is the ability of the organisers to come up with new ideas and walks year after year and this year is no exception. Wherever you live in the county there are walks near you. Whether you prefer long walks, short
walks, informative walks or even trying out something new like Nordic walking or walking with power rings join us and Let’s Walk. If you like drawing or sketching, getting the family involved with Geo cashing, riding on a narrow gauge railway, or simply relaxing at an evening of Trails and Tales we have that too. However If you really want to test yourself why not take part in the 40 Mile Greensand Ridge Challenge which takes place over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 16th & 17th September.
Across the county there are a number of informative and interest walks including a five mills walk which includes a lunch and tour of an active Mill , A visit to picturesque Ickwell, with a tour of the private grounds of Ickwell Bury and finishing by exploring Shuttleworth House, A walk around a small village with a big history, and unveiling the mysteries surrounding the Bedford suburb of Queens Park. Views from
Alistair Burt, your Local MP... CONTAMINATED BLOOD – THE NEED FOR AN INQUIRY
Y
ou will have heard in the news recently that the Prime Minister has ordered an inquiry into the Contaminated Blood scandal of the 1970s & 80s; where those receiving NHS blood products (mainly haemophiliacs and those with bleeding disorders) were infected with HIV and/ or Hep C.
The human cost and scale of this tragedy is vast. Published data and scientific studies have estimated that around 4,700 people with bleeding disorders (such as haemophilia), and around 28,000 other people who were exposed to hepatitis C, as well as around 1,200 people with bleeding disorders and 100 other individuals were infected with HIV through treatment with NHS-supplied blood products or blood transfusions in the UK. Many of those infected with HIV were also infected with hepatitis C and 80% of them have since died. It is impossible to exaggerate the sheer misery caused by this scandal; this is one of the biggest treatment disasters in the history of the NHS. Whenever public disasters of this kind take place, the Government has a fundamental duty to support those affected in getting the answers they need. For many decades the victims in this scandal have not been able to access the information to address their concerns or call to account the officials involved. 8
The campaign for justice in this matter was first brought to my attention over 10 years when I met a constituent who had been affected. Since that time I have worked with colleagues across all parties to seek answers to the questions that victims had, and to try and obtain proper compensation for the misery they and their families had endured during this scandal. Over the years, different Governments have made changes and improved the support being offered to those infected and their families, but major questions remained unanswered. Recently, new evidence and allegations of potential criminality have come forward and it is important to get to the truth of what has happened. The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has rightly made the decision that an Inquiry must now be held and that it is important to understand the extent of what is claimed and the wider issues that arise. The Government has committed to talk with those affected and their families to decide the most appropriate form for the inquiry and who should chair it. I will continue to work with my constituents who are affected by this to engage with and support the new inquiry and hope that finally it will achieve the justice and answers that victims deserve.

to transform the Harpur Centre submitted to Bedford Borough Council
Proposals to modernise and transform the Harpur Centre have been submitted to Bedford Borough Council this week. The plans which include a comprehensive internal refurbishment in addition to bringing the shop fronts forward to meet the canopy and new double-height entrances on Horne Lane and Midland Road are central to creating a more competitive and smarter shopping centre. The submitted plans follow detailed discussions with Historic England on the relationship between the new units proposed on Midland Road and Horne Lane with the Grade II* listed façade. The plans have been altered to reflect the advice received from Historic England with proposed connecting elements between the centre and the Listed frontage being reduced. The application will shortly be made available on Bedford Borough Council’s website for the local community to view and leave comments. ing’s Arms Project was established by a group of volunteers from local churches in 1989 as a community response to homelessness and disadvantage.
We deliver services to empower people on their journey out of homelessness through outreach, accommodation and opportunity. This year we will be supporting over 600 clients across Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes with services including; a Nightshelter, short term accommodation, Move-On Housing, rough sleeper outreach, skills development courses, outreach meals, mentoring, volunteer work placements and refugee resettlement. We are celebrating as we see clients move into their own accommodation and secure employment after long periods of being homeless - some after 15 years! Earlier this year we supported a long term client who moved into his own flat – the first time that he had ever lived independently. We have also seen up to 50% of people completing a volunteer work placement with us move into paid employment! We have been encouraged by stories of life transformation in our clients. This includes
James (name changed to protect identity) who had been rough sleeping before being encouraged to move into our Nightshelter. James received support to apply for accommodation and soon after he moved into ‘The Hub’, our accommodation for individuals who have become homeless for the first time. Whilst at The Hub, James engaged with our mentoring programme, successfully applied for our MoveOn Housing and developed the courage to attend our Jobs Club. We are excited for James’ future as he develops a greater confidence and self-awareness, enabling him to effectively contribute and encourage others. Over the years we have supported thousands of people like James with previous clients moving into employment, starting up their own businesses and leading support services for the homeless! We believe that people belong in community and that we all have a part to play as we stand against poverty together. This includes working together with other local charities, volunteers, businesses, supermarkets and community groups. This helps us to offer the best solutions for the homeless and disadvantaged, providing work placements or employment opportunities, making use of food that would otherwise be wasted and practically supporting the homeless. This could look like volunteering in one of our houses, helping out at our weekly outreach meal, picking up donations or fundraising with us. Either way, we would love to hear from you! Security. Make sure your computer has all the security it needs. There are many anti-virus programs available, from expensive to free, so check with someone who is knowledgeable about computers. Don’t send personal information. Scammers might send out email on bank letterhead and say there is a problem with the account and you need to update information, password and account number. This is a sign of a scam. Don’t ever give out personal information, including banking and credit card numbers, to anyone you don’t know.
Learn to identify spam and scams. Don’t respond to emails from people you don’t know or to emails you haven’t expected to receive. Be wary of any offer that’s too good to be true. If you have been told you won a contest that you didn’t enter, or you’re being offered an incredible price on a vacation or product way below what you’d expect to pay, chances are they are scams. Do not reply to these emails. Use strong and unique passwords Strong passwords are essential, just as they are with email and social media accounts. Never share your passwords with anyone. If you are concerned that you might have been scammed or if you know someone that has been affected by fraudsters, make sure to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime received seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design and five Tony Awards on Broadway including Best Play. The show tells the story of Christopher Boone, who is fifteen years old. He stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, which has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, and is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Love Letters Love Letters is one of the simplest games you can ever play, while also involving a lot of strategy as well. The best games around are like that, very easy to play but the more you play the more you realise the depth that it actually has. The premise is that you are all suitors trying to get a letter to the Princess who is at hiding away at her home. You need to use her servants to get a Love Letter to her and fend off the other suitors trying to do the same. Every turn you have one card in your hand, pick up a card and then play one of the two you have with the aim of trying to work out who the other players are and to be either the last person left in the game or to be the character with the highest number on it when all 16 cards have been drawn. Each round is very fast paced (good because anyone knocked out early doesn’t get left out for too long) and the first person to win four rounds wins the game. It is the perfect starter game or a great one to wind down a game night with. When you do manage to get away though you get a real feeling of victory!

Review Baby Driver
Baby Driver is a new kind of film. The story is a fairly basic criminal/ bank robbery film which doesn’t add anything new to the genre with the plot. Where it does become very original and different is in the way it uses the soundtrack. The music is not only integral to the main character, the eponymous ‘Baby’ who uses music to cancel out his tinnitus, to time everything on the heists and to drive to but also to the movie itself. The soundtrack to Baby Driver is used in a way that I have never seen in anything except a musical, in fact this is what a musical would be in real life we don’t have random dance scenes or everyone exploding into song but music is everything! It is an unusual way to involve music as such an organic part of the whole film. Baby Driver becomes more than just a visual feast as the music adds to everything you see. Baby Driver is full of great actors, over the top car chases, explosive action and a smidgeon of comedy. It is easily one of the best films so far this year and definitely one of the most original for a long time.

He doesn’t mean it, of course, but the thought is there, uttered only when his 10 year old son is asleep. Even if Jonah heard he wouldn’t say anything. Jonah doesn’t say anything. Jonah is nonverbal. He has autism. This is not your Rain Main depiction of autism where Jonah is a gifted child in at least one area. He has the mental age of a toddler and his parents have reached the end of the road. He is about to make the transition to secondary school and Ben and Emma are convinced that he would be better off in a residential specialist school. without going into kennels?

es! Kennel cough is more properly known as “infectious canine tracheobronchitis”. It is an infection of the upper airways. Affected dogs have a characteristic honking or retching type of cough, almost as if the dog has something stuck in their throat.
cough have to be quarantined at home to prevent spread to other dogs, which can be very tricky, especially if the dog catches the disease just before a family holiday and is not able to go into boarding kennels as planned. Unfortunately, catching the disease once does not provide long lasting immunity against catching kennel cough again in the future.
Kennel cough is very easily spread between dogs by sneezing and coughing. For this reason, if lots of dogs are housed in the same building (as in a kennels) and one dog has kennel cough, it is very likely to spread to the other dogs in the building too. But this is also true of anywhere that dogs meet and mix together – the groomers, the park, the veterinary surgery, dog shows...
We recommend that all dogs regularly meeting and mixing with other dogs are protected by vaccination against kennel cough.
Kennel cough is rarely a life-threatening disease but it is a common disease – most dogs will catch it at least once in their life time. Some affected dogs feel uncomfortable and unwell; others remain bright but suffer disturbed sleep because of the coughing bouts. Dogs with kennel
Kennel cough vaccination can be given at the same time as the usual booster vaccination, or at any other time. Instead of being an injection, it is a drop of liquid squirted up the nose, similar to the flu vaccine given to children. It is given once a year. he Horse Chestnut is a very majestic and iconic tree, found in many places throughout Britain including gardens, parks, school grounds and churchyards. The immediate threat to the Horse Chestnut is attack from Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner which pose’s a real threat to the survival of this beautiful, iconic tree which for many generations has been a favorite with children and adults for the Conkers it produces.

The Leaf Miner arrived in the UK about 8-9 years ago, the caterpillar feeds within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the upper surface which eventually form brown dead patches, giving the tree an autumnal appearance by July
and resulting in early leaf fall. Recent evidence indicates that this insect can cause smaller trees to die while, the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth, and the cumulative loss in stored food products may compromise long-term health of mature trees.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. 10 top tips to help save water this summer.
1. Use waste water from washing-up or rinsing vegetables for watering; normal amounts of household soaps and detergents will not harm soil or plants. 2. Let your lawns go brown. They will recover when the rains return. Newly sown and turfed lawns require a lot of watering to be successful, so leave sowing or turfing until the autumn. 3. Vegetables need moist soils to give their best. Water them at key growth stages. The response to water is especially marked when sweetcorn, peas and beans begin to flower, when the edible part of lettuces begins to form and when potatoes show flower buds. 4. Newly planted trees, shrubs and climbers are vulnerable and it is difficult to ensure the water applied at the surface works its way down to the roots. Don’t leave hoses running all night – the water will either saturate the roots or it will drain deeply below the root zone. Water should always be applied over the surface.

5. Fruit may remain small if not watered, but it should be sweet and well-coloured. Cane fruit and strawberries will benefit by keeping the soil moist every two weeks. 7. By grouping pots, ideally in clusters of similar size, watering is made easier and moisture loss reduced. Mass pots for mutual shading and use the largest pots possible. A saucer beneath the pot to retain run-off helps. 8. Don’t dig new ground in summer if you can avoid it as digging soil allows any remaining moisture to escape. Hoe off weeds shallowly, loosen soil with a fork and ‘puddle’ plants into the soil, adding a little liquid fertiliser. Adding nutrients helps plants make the best use of what moisture there is by encouraging extensive root growth. 9. Establishing new plants in borders during dry times can be difficult. Instead, pot them into slightly bigger pots and keep well watered and fed in light shade until the autumn planting season arrives. 10. Early summer perennials will survive on moisture left in the soil from winter. Give late summer perennials one good watering in the summer as plants begin to flower, which should be enough. In the longer term, consider planting drought-resistant species in your borders.
