Occupational Therapy Show 2015 – What’s new?
By Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson
Known for its bustling show floor, internationally renowned speaker line-up and exciting learning opportunities, the Occupational Therapy Show is one of the few completely FREE events on the Occupational Therapy calendar.
You may have seen a picture of me sitting in a wheelbarrow and as you may guess it is not a regular occurrence for me. I have been working on a project for the last nine months looking at the provision of wheelchairs for disabled people in England.
OTs will have access to a 300 -strong trade exhibition hosting the top manufacturers and suppliers from around the UK, as well as outstanding educational programme packed full with information and fresh ideas relevant to the OT field.
There are some people who have had a relatively good experience but the vast majority of people who have been in touch with me have not. There are some really tragic stories. Some people with motor neurone disease who have died before their chairs have been ready for them. One mum wrote to me to tell me that it took a year for her son to have a chair measured and he died only a little while later. And the experiences go on and on. No one who works in wheelchair services is trying to do a bad job, but there are so many different ways of working. There are 209 clinical commissioning groups who can all run wheelchair services how they want. This has left a post code lottery of different assessment criteria, equipment and wait times. The most shocking example is of a young woman who had to wait seven years to get the right chair. The reason that I decided to sit in a wheelbarrow was to try and explain what the wrong chair feels like. A wheelbarrow may have seat, and wheels and even handles but in it I have no independence. I cannot get to work or the shop and I can’t move myself around. At the moment there is potential financial waste by having a chair that doesn’t fit but there is also a huge personal cost. If someone has a carer and they are trying to push the wrong chair it will do them damage. Pressure sores cost the NHS over a billion pounds a year. Not all of these will be from the wrong chair but it won’t help I have been involved in writing a charter for change and we also have a public campaign.
It feels like the end of the process but realistically we need tens of thousands of signatures to be able to go back to the NHS and ask them to think differently and this is also a service that will effect many more people in the years to come. Visit the Occupational Therapy Show on Thursday 26th November to learn more about this campaign. During my presentation entitled ‘Right wheelchair, right time, right now’, taking place in Theatre 1 at 11:30am, I will discuss the Wheelchair Alliance and the work they are doing to ‘revamp’ Wheelchair Services in the UK, and what the role of the Occupational Therapist within this is.
New to 2015… The Occupational Therapy Show Poster Zone Following on from delegate feedback, the organisers of the Occupational Therapy Show are delighted to announce the launch of a poster presentation feature for 2015. The Poster Zone will showcase work submitted by OTs who work across the UK, within NHS Trusts, local councils, independent practice and all other sectors. Details on how to submit your poster to the NEW Poster Zone at this year’s Show, along with deadline dates can be found by visiting www.theotshow.com/posterzone. The Occupational Therapy Show Awards The awards will celebrate and acknowledge successful individuals and teams within the OT profession. Aimed at grass roots OT professionals, in the statutory and/or private sector, to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions made to both the profession and to the clients they serve, the four award categories that can be entered are as follows: Continued on page 2

We are asking Occupational Therapists and members of the public to pledge their support by visiting www.rightwheelchair. org.uk. You don’t have to be a wheelchair user, or even know anyone in a chair, but we want to get the public to understand the implications of not doing this properly. It has a big impact on us all.

Reflecting on practice All Occupational Therapists (OT) are waiting to receive their Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) renewal documents, if they haven’t done so already. We have a duty to our clients to make sure we engage with Continued Professional Development (CPD), as this is the way we continue to learn and develop throughout our careers, we must keep our skills and knowledge up to date and ensure we are able to work safely, legally and effectively.
Also coming to you for the first time will be the Paediatric Trail If your specialist area is in paediatrics, or is an area of interest, then this is for you! Not only will there be an action packed programme full of relevant CPD opportunities, you can also be the proud winner of an iPad Air 2! To be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize, simply visit all exhibitors taking part in the paediatric trail. By visiting these exhibitors, it will give you greater exposure to all the latest products, services and technologies on the market, enabling you to provide a more enhanced service to your clients.
Kate Sheehan, Independent Occupational Therapist

• Work based learning
Aside from all this, the old favourites are also back this November including:
• Professional activity
• The ever popular four stream education programme; Physical, Mental Health, Children & Family and Shaping the future
The HCPC have excellent resources on their website (http://www.hpc-uk.org) which can support an OT to keep a record of your CPD activity, examples on how to create a summary of your practice history for the last two years and a statement of how you have met the standards of CPD, with evidence to back up this statement.
The HCPC is keen to see OT’s involved in a variety of CPD which will have a value to them as a therapist and ultimately a benefit to the client group they treat. The HCPC have activity categories, which constitute CPD and give examples in each of these are,
• Self directed learning • Other The HCPC state this list is not exhaustive.
• Networking drinks reception at the end of day 1 To register for FREE today visit www.theotshow.com/newspaper and for more information visit the website www.theotshow.com
Work based learning – join your fellow colleagues in the networking coffee bar and discuss latest developments.
• Innovation and Showcase Theatres
Formal/education – attend one of the excellent seminars, Dr Claire Craig speaking on the relationship between occupational therapy and designer and the impact on the end user. Hear Dr Sidney Chu speak on differential diagnosis and comorbidity of Attention Deficit Disorder and sensory processing disorder. Self directed learning – visit the exhibitors and see what is new in the field of wheelchair and vehicle provision, furniture or incontinence. There is always something new or a piece of assistive equipment that will meet your immediate clients needs. Give your self time to speak to the stand staff and ask how a piece of equipment works, they are also keen to hear your feedback on equipment especially what can be improved. Other – Review all the poster presentations, attend one of the excellent exhibitor sessions, which are increasingly being presented by OT’s working in the commercial sector. Attend the networking drinks and meet leading OT’s in their field and develop relationships to support your practice.
• Formal/educational learning
So how do OT’s in this time of constrained training budgets, access scarce resources for training? The Occupational Therapy Show is an excellent opportunity every year to receive high quality CPD that is FREE of charge and can provide an example in each of the five areas listed.
• On stand exhibitor education programme
Professional activity – consider putting in a poster for the show, show what your service is achieving share this knowledge and seek reflections from other OT’s.
Visit the BAOT exhibition stand and engage with the specialist sections volunteers, review what is happening in the 11 sections and how they can support your practice. You could also consider volunteering to support one of the sections! The Occupational Therapy Show is a fantastic opportunity to meet your CPD requirements for renewal of registration with the HCPC but more importantly it can have a huge impact on the treatment of your clients and have long lasting impacts on their occupational performance.

International Occupational Therapy with WFOT The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) is the international organisation that represents over 450,000 occupational therapists worldwide. With over 100,000 occupational therapy students and 50,000 occupational therapy assistants, the number of people involved in the profession is in excess of a half a million. WFOT is truly unique in that it is the only organisation that represents over 80 national occupational therapy organisations worldwide. Founded in 1952, WFOT is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO), which has been in official relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO) since 1959 and recognised by the United Nations (UN) since 1963. As the only international organisation representing occupational therapy worldwide, WFOT offers a plethora of products and services to serve a global community many of which are housed on the website www.wfot.org. In 2014 our website generated a staggering 750,000 page views from 193 different countries. WFOT’s presence on social media is enjoying incredible success with over 13,000 followers on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/thewfot and 1,600 on Twitter www.twitter.com/thewfot. As an international organisation, our membership comprises of occupational therapists who speak a range of languages. We offer translated documents and online services that enable people to access our publications from wherever they are based.
Inclusion me This July a multi award winning Occupational Therapy company, Inclusion.Me, re-launched their hugely successful "Starting Out: Tips For Independent OTs Guide"; developing it to include some of their recent Q&A's with independent OTs along with providing additional tips on maintaining CPD.
World Occupational Therapy Day 2015 will take place on the 27th October and is a fantastic opportunity to promote the global profile of the profession. There are a range of banners, logos and ideas that you can use for your celebrations. Download the Guide to World Occupational Therapy Day from the WFOT website and explore many of the resources available in the Resource Centre. New publication: Disaster Preparedness and Response – An Occupational Perspective. WFOT has commissioned a limited edition issue of this publication that features its unique branding to endorse and support to the importance of occupational therapy and disaster preparedness. This publication is the recommended text for the WFOT Disaster Preparedness and Response Online Education Module (coming soon) and essential reading for occupational therapy students, practitioners, researchers and academics. Take the opportunity to own this valuable resource and support the work of WFOT in the process by purchasing your copy via the WFOT website. Samantha Shann, WFOT Vice President Finance, will be presenting a session on the 26th November at the Occupational Therapy Show, at 9.30 am in the Key Note Theatre, titled “Influencing health and well-being globally: collaboration between the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and the World Health Organization?”. WFOT would welcome your attendance at this session and look forward to meeting you!
At the same time they have also announced a brand new Social Media guide, which is full of tips from OTs on how they use social media as a way of helping them to stand out from the crowd, whilst also finding it an increasingly invaluable CPD tool. The Director of Inclusion.Me, Matthew Box, said "Over the past year we’ve had so much positive feedback about the last Tips guide that developing it further and launching the new social media guide seemed like a sensible step to take. They're both completely free to download through our website and we really hope they'll continue to be a reference point for OTs thinking of stepping out into the big wide world of independent practice for years to come." Both guides can be downloaded via the Inclusion.Me website: http://www.inclusion.me.uk/professionals_portal Visit Inclusion.me at the Occupational Therapy Show on stand G28 for more information, or alternatively you can contact Inclusion.Me regarding these guides, or in relation to their Q&A interviews, via email info@inclusion.me.uk or through http://www.inclusion.me.uk/.
So we’ve created 66fit for people who measure themselves against their own expectations, and then exceed them. 66fit is both a range of products and a state of mind.

Confidently Ordering Equipment Gone are the days when the professional Occupational Therapist (OT) had the freedom to choose from an extensive catalogue of equipment to meet the needs of their clients. The range of equipment has been streamlined down to that which meets the majority of users, with the best value Stuart Barrow, OT specialising in for money and in some local adaptations authorities a self service option is available i.e. Oxfordshire Council. There is nothing wrong with that from a business perspective, but I am sure you will agree that none of your clients are “standard”, each having their own unique combination of functional abilities. So, how do we meet the need when the equipment we can access through the local stores doesn’t fit? As OT’s we have always been able to order “specials”, and to justify our reasoning for them, but never more so than now, when often extensive documentation needs to be submitted often multiple times. I would urge you not to be put off by the process of ordering a “special” or “bespoke” item of equipment, and I offer the following chunks of knowledge to new graduates or those moving into roles where you are ordering equipment for the first time. KNOW your responsibilities as an OT As an Occupational Therapist we have responsibilities to our profession, our clients and our employer. As a professional we adhere to our code of practice to maintain our registration with the HCPC. We are responsible to our clients to give them the best of our knowledge and experience, and to provide them with adaptive equipment that is suitable and safe, and advise them of other sources of equipment or resources. Finally we are responsible to our employer, who provides our
The OT Show is a great opportunity to ask all the charities and voluntary organisations in attendance what they do and how they can help.
salary, to work within their policies and procedures. KNOW your equipment Visiting the OT show is a great opportunity to become familiar with the vast amount of equipment and adaptive products now available on the market. It’s not often that you get the opportunity to see so much, and have such easy access to products and information. So, have a look to see what’s new, what will work for your clients. Become familiar with products that your clients may want to purchase themselves, if you were in their situation, what would you buy and why? We still have a responsibility to share new innovations with our clients, even if we cannot fund them. KNOW your resources While it is not going to be possible to know everything about the complete range of adaptive equipment, you can tap into a number of resources. Each product company at the OT show will have staff who are experts in their range of products. They will practically fall over themselves to talk to you, take your email to add you to their list, give you catalogues and if you are lucky a decent black pen! Use their knowledge, use their resources after the OT show, use their websites to check specifications. Learn from them, they know their products, and you know your clients. It’s not just statutory services who provide and fund equipment, a number of charities and voluntary organisations will help clients to source and fundraise for equipment too. It may or may not be within your role to pursue this for your clients, but
GROW your KNOWLEDGE Whether you are in a generalist field, having a tremendous breadth of knowledge or specialist field where depth is essential, being aware of the equipment and product market is a responsibility we all have. The more familiar you are with the products and resources available, the better you will be able to identify when a “standard “ item of adaptive equipment will meet the needs and the better you will be able to reason when completing a request for the elusive “special “order. Come and see the Promoting Independence Team on stand D5. We are always available to help or drop us an E Mail on info@promoting-independence.co.uk with any equipment or adaptation queries. FC, Stansted Airport and Tesco amongst others. We advise on the design, specification and installation of all products required for a Changing Places toilet.
Changing Places toilets are designed with users, family and carers in mind. A Changing Places encompasses the qualities of a standard disabled toilet with the addition of 12 square meters of space, a hoist and changing table for lifting, toileting and changing requirements. For Occupational Therapists, Changing Places are being recognised as a valuable means for families to spend longer periods of time in public places and are being recommended as a brilliant resource for users and families.
To find out more information, OpeMed will be including Changing Places as part of their keynote talk on 25th November 11am in the Innovation Theatre, exploring the important factors of a Changing Places so that OT’s can comfortably recommend the facilities. Visit our stand C56 at The OT Show or search www.opemed.net for more information on our products and services including Changing Places.

Could using an online portfolio help you to organise your CPD evidence? Whether you work as an occupational therapist in statutory services or in independent practice, you may be considering how best to organise your CPD evidence. In either of these circumstances your roles may not fit neatly into CPD categories defined by professional and organisational bodies. Consequently you may also need to find CPD opportunities outside of your professional sphere of work that enable you to meet industry standards or those set by your employing organisation. If you have more than one role, or work for different employers, finding evidence and presenting it to reflect your experience in the best light will be another consideration. Alternatively, you may have years of experience, and growing amounts of supporting evidence but no structured way of recording or storing this. If this sounds familiar, then an online portfolio may be a helpful tool to enable you to create and keep records of your CPD activity and evidence. What is CPD? Practitioners will be aware of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirement to meet standards of CPD for professional registration and there is a wealth of information to enable you to do this from both the HCPC www.hpc-uk.org and the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) www.cot.co.uk. ‘Put simply, CPD is the way registrants continue to learn and develop throughout their careers so they keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date and are able to work safely, legally and effectively’ (HCPC 2012 page 6). As an independent practitioner, the evidence you gather for registration purposes could also enable you to meet other needs such as demonstrating that you are meeting industry standards, have achieved a certain level of competence or achieved an accredited qualification. You may also have chosen activities that specifically showcase your learning, development and quality of service to clients or demonstrate personal development. So... while CPD activity should be relevant to your practice you may have; ‘… different development needs, and…’ your ‘… CPD activities may be very different.’ from your colleagues (HCPC 2012 page 9). How could an online portfolio help? Common reasons that people state for not organising their CPD evidence are lack of time and/or the lack of a relevant and accessible means of doing so! In response to this Harrison Training, a well-established OT training company, in partnership with Moonshine Internet, has developed an online portfolio for OTs known as CPD Online (cpdol) www.cpdol.co.uk. Experience of using and developing CPD Online has shown that some of the key benefits of using an online portfolio are: • Access to ready-made templates for recording CPD activities • Easily accessible from anywhere via the internet
• Provide extensive and secure storage • Ability to upload previously produced documents • Able to access wider CPD resources and training • Transferable between roles and organisations Apart from the key benefits mentioned above, there are other features to look for when deciding which portfolio would suit you best... Features of the portfolio – check the key features of the portfolio and then decide whether it meets your needs. Is it just a portfolio for basic recording of CPD or are there additional features such as access to online CPD opportunities, links to other resources, etc. How easy is it to record your CPD activity? Can you customise templates? Can you upload certificates and other documents and organise them easily? Can you print easily? How it looks and ease of use – how appealing the portfolio looks to you will depend to some extent on your preferred style. However its overall appearance may also be an indication of how easy it will be to use; would you need to learn a new and unfamiliar system before you can start to use it? Can you try it out before committing to subscribe? Compatibility with HCPC or other professional formats – some online portfolios present their templates and tools in a way that is compatible with HCPC or other professional formats – is this helpful to you? Would you prefer more flexibility to produce things in your own way? IT compatibility/access/security – is it compatible with your computer/mobile/tablet and how easy is it to access? Checking what IT specification you need to be able to operate it and whether it accessible through a mobile app, internet access etc. How your data is kept secure and what happens to it if you decide to stop your registration with the service? Is it transferable internationally, across different job roles etc. Financial considerations – most online portfolios use either regular subscriptions or an annual fee for the supply of their service. What features are included in the fee? Are there any hidden or additional costs? How do you know when renewal is due? How easy is it to leave the service? Are there any penalties for doing this?
Level of support – including technical or practical support with completing templates. How is support provided – remote via email or internet or is there a phone line? Are there prompts, guidelines or FAQ’s to help you with common problems? Ability to share information – this is useful if you want to easily share your information with others for example your supervisor for your appraisal, or for HCPC audit etc. Additional resources – most portfolios have additional resources as well as the portfolio function – such as CPD information, access to online training, links to other CPD resources, regular updates and reminders....consider what would be most helpful to you CPD Online was created by occupational therapists for occupational therapists and so provides users with industry specific information together with tailored templates that capture CPD evidence within the OT sector. It was designed to provide therapists with a cost-effective tool to personalise and use throughout their career to record both professional and personal development; untied to specific organisations but facilitating compliance with audits, appraisals, and other professional requirements. For further information come and find us on Stand C30 at the Occupational Therapy Show. Visit: www.cpdol.co.uk or www.harrisontraining.co.uk Or email us at: info@harrisontraining.co.uk Interested in finding out more or making a start at recording your CPD? Look out for the next article in the Occupational Therapy Show Newsletter entitled ‘Making a Start on recording your CPD’ which introduces one of the templates in CPD Online References Health and Care Professions Council (2012) CPD and your registration. Launch of OT Practice children’s service is a great success! The OT Practice has recently launched OT Practice Kids and we are thrilled with the results. Whilst our adult provision is well established & successful we recognised that we were seeing a huge increase in demand for children’s occupational therapy delivered in the same way. We wanted to ensure we were delivering the same high standards for our youngest client group so we developed a service designed specifically around them and with our ethos of ‘quality without compromise’ at the heart. The service is led by Sarah, herself an experienced paediatric Occupational Therapist. Sarah says “bringing my clinical experience in-house to develop The OT Practice Kids service is such an exciting opportunity. The OT Practice are committed to providing high quality therapy to children through our nationwide network of expert paediatric OT’s. I am particularly enjoying working with the dynamic and experienced team and also providing support for therapists new to independent work who have the skills & ability but lack experience in the private sector.”

The OT Show
OT Practice Kids provides assessments, treatments and support to schools, LEA’s, children and families across the UK. Referrals can range from housing and equipment advice to hand writing and sensory needs. Louise, one of our paediatric OT tells us “I love the work I get through OT Practice Kids. Each case is different and because we only see children at home or school rather than clinics it means we can deliver high quality care in their own environment.’’
The Occupational Therapy Show
Our team have a variety of skills and experiences and many work with us along side existing roles in the NHS, Social Services as Case Managers or expert witnesses. We are currently looking to grow the network. The OT Practice’s Therapist Manager Wendy says “we are delighted to announce our 48 hour speed interviewing event at the Occupational Therapy Show this year. We will have a large recruitment team present and would like to meet OT’s interested in joining us. If you would like to know more please email us join-us@theotpractice. co.uk and we look forward to meeting you at the show’’

OT for kids, meet Joshua! Joshua is 10 years old, he enjoys playing football and wants to do well at school. Joshua has Dyspraxia. Dyspraxia affects a child’s planning, processing, and motor co-ordination, which dramatically impacts upon a child’s performance in school.
Locum Occupational Therapist vacancies throughout the UK! Apply today
National Locums are one of Britain’s leading and fastest-growing specialist recruitment companies. We specialise in supplying locum allied health professionals, doctor and nurses to the NHS and independent hospitals, throughout the UK.
We need Heroes! Occupational Therapy Heroes to be precise! We specialise in offering a personalised recruitment service, finding locum positions for Occupational Therapists within the NHS and private sector. Working with all of the UK NHS Trusts and all leading Private Hospitals, we can find you locum work, where you need it and when you need it.
Joshua struggles to ride a bike, he is never picked for the school football team, and the teachers at his school are expressing concerns regarding his writing. Joshua tries very hard to keep up with the class when he is copying from the board, however he just can’t do it. He has to concentrate so hard on making his writing neat and legible, that he often misses the information being taught and the objectives for the lesson. Joshua visited one of our associate Occupational Therapists and received an initial assessment and ongoing monthly treatment. Alongside his ongoing treatment, Joshua and his parents worked through a home programme of activities to improve his skills. Over time, Joshua’s writing became legible and he was able to kick a football with
good accuracy and even managed to get his way onto the school football team! Both Joshua and his parents were extremely pleased with the support, advice and expert help they received from our associate OT, in helping Joshua achieve his goals. If you would like to make a difference to children like Joshua, and are an experienced paediatric Occupational Therapist looking for additional ad hoc opportunities, give us a call on 0330 223 0888, or email office@otforkids.co.uk to find out more.
