Occupational Therapy Show 2015 – What’s new?

Known for its bustling show floor, internationally renowned speaker line-up and exciting learning opportunities, the Occupational Therapy Show is one of the few completely FREE events on the Occupational Therapy calendar.

You may have seen a picture of me sitting in a wheelbarrow and as you may guess it is not a regular occurrence for me. I have been working on a project for the last nine months looking at the provision of wheelchairs for disabled people in England.

OTs will have access to a 300 -strong trade exhibition hosting the top manufacturers and suppliers from around the UK, as well as outstanding educational programme packed full with information and fresh ideas relevant to the OT field.

There are some people who have had a relatively good experience but the vast majority of people who have been in touch with me have not. There are some really tragic stories. Some people with motor neurone disease who have died before their chairs have been ready for them. One mum wrote to me to tell me that it took a year for her son to have a chair measured and he died only a little while later. And the experiences go on and on. No one who works in wheelchair services is trying to do a bad job, but there are so many different ways of working. There are 209 clinical commissioning groups who can all run wheelchair services how they want. This has left a post code lottery of different assessment criteria, equipment and wait times. The most shocking example is of a young woman who had to wait seven years to get the right chair. The reason that I decided to sit in a wheelbarrow was to try and explain what the wrong chair feels like. A wheelbarrow may have seat, and wheels and even handles but in it I have no independence. I cannot get to work or the shop and I can’t move myself around. At the moment there is potential financial waste by having a chair that doesn’t fit but there is also a huge personal cost. If someone has a carer and they are trying to push the wrong chair it will do them damage. Pressure sores cost the NHS over a billion pounds a year. Not all of these will be from the wrong chair but it won’t help I have been involved in writing a charter for change and we also have a public campaign.

It feels like the end of the process but realistically we need tens of thousands of signatures to be able to go back to the NHS and ask them to think differently and this is also a service that will effect many more people in the years to come. During my presentation entitled ‘Right wheelchair, right time, right now’, taking place in Theatre 1 at 11:30am, I will discuss the Wheelchair Alliance and the work they are doing to ‘revamp’ Wheelchair Services in the UK, and what the role of the Occupational Therapist within this is.

International Occupational Therapy with WFOT The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) is the international organisation that represents over 450,000 occupational therapists worldwide. Confidently Ordering Equipment Gone are the days when the professional Occupational Therapist (OT) had the freedom to choose from an extensive catalogue of equipment to meet the needs of their clients. The range of equipment has been streamlined down to that which meets the majority of users, with the best value Stuart Barrow, OT specialising in for money and in some local adaptations authorities a self service option is available i.e. Oxfordshire Council. There is nothing wrong with that from a business perspective, but I am sure you will agree that none of your clients are “standard”, each having their own unique combination of functional abilities. So, how do we meet the need when the equipment we can access through the local stores doesn’t fit? As OT’s we have always been able to order “specials”, and to justify our reasoning for them, but never more so than now, when often extensive documentation needs to be submitted often multiple times. I would urge you not to be put off by the process of ordering a “special” or “bespoke” item of equipment, and I offer the following chunks of knowledge to new graduates or those moving into roles where you are ordering equipment for the first time. KNOW your responsibilities as an OT As an Occupational Therapist we have responsibilities to our profession, our clients and our employer. As a professional we adhere to our code of practice to maintain our registration with the HCPC. We are responsible to our clients to give them the best of our knowledge and experience, and to provide them with adaptive equipment that is suitable and safe, and advise them of other sources of equipment or resources. salary, to work within their policies and procedures. KNOW your equipment Visiting the OT show is a great opportunity to become familiar with the vast amount of equipment and adaptive products now available on the market. It’s not often that you get the opportunity to see so much, and have such easy access to products and information. So, have a look to see what’s new, what will work for your clients. Become familiar with products that your clients may want to purchase themselves, if you were in their situation, what would you buy and why? We still have a responsibility to share new innovations with our clients, even if we cannot fund them. KNOW your resources While it is not going to be possible to know everything about the complete range of adaptive equipment, you can tap into a number of resources. Each product company at the OT show will have staff who are experts in their range of products. They will practically fall over themselves to talk to you, take your email to add you to their list, give you catalogues and if you are lucky a decent black pen! Use their knowledge, use their resources after the OT show, use their websites to check specifications. Learn from them, they know their products, and you know your clients. It’s not just statutory services who provide and fund equipment, a number of charities and voluntary organisations will help clients to source and fundraise for equipment too. It may or may not be within your role to pursue this for your clients, but

GROW your KNOWLEDGE Whether you are in a generalist field, having a tremendous breadth of knowledge or specialist field where depth is essential, being aware of the equipment and product market is a responsibility we all have. The more familiar you are with the products and resources available, the better you will be able to identify when a “standard “ item of adaptive equipment will meet the needs and the better you will be able to reason when completing a request for the elusive “special “order. The Changing Places What is the Posture & Mobility Group? Campaign The Mencap led campaign for ‘Changing Places’ has been running since 2005, and is an important life changing campaign affecting over 230,000 people in the UK alone.

Posture & Mobility Group (PMG) is a free of charge membership organisation and charity with the aim of sharing knowledge and promoting best practice in the field of posture and wheeled mobility.

The Mencap led campaign for ‘Changing Places’ has been running since 2005, and is an important life changing campaign affecting over 230,000 people in the UK alone.

Could using an online portfolio help you to organise your CPD evidence? Whether you work as an occupational therapist in statutory services or in independent practice, you may be considering how best to organise your CPD evidence. In either of these circumstances your roles may not fit neatly into CPD categories defined by professional and organisational bodies. Consequently you may also need to find CPD opportunities outside of your professional sphere of work that enable you to meet industry standards or those set by your employing organisation. If you have more than one role, or work for different employers, finding evidence and presenting it to reflect your experience in the best light will be another consideration. Alternatively, you may have years of experience, and growing amounts of supporting evidence but no structured way of recording or storing this. If this sounds familiar, then an online portfolio may be a helpful tool to enable you to create and keep records of your CPD activity and evidence. What is CPD? Practitioners will be aware of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirement to meet standards of CPD for professional registration and there is a wealth of information to enable you to do this from both the HCPC www.hpc-uk.org and the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) www.cot.co.uk. ‘Put simply, CPD is the way registrants continue to learn and develop throughout their careers so they keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date and are able to work safely, legally and effectively’ (HCPC 2012 page 6). As an independent practitioner, the evidence you gather for registration purposes could also enable you to meet other needs such as demonstrating that you are meeting industry standards, have achieved a certain level of competence or achieved an accredited qualification. You may also have chosen activities that specifically showcase your learning, development and quality of service to clients or demonstrate personal development. So... while CPD activity should be relevant to your practice you may have; ‘… different development needs, and…’ your ‘… CPD activities may be very different.’ from your colleagues (HCPC 2012 page 9). How could an online portfolio help? Common reasons that people state for not organising their CPD evidence are lack of time and/or the lack of a relevant and accessible means of doing so! In response to this Harrison Training, a well-established OT training company, in partnership with Moonshine Internet, has developed an online portfolio for OTs known as CPD Online (cpdol) www.cpdol.co.uk. Experience of using and developing CPD Online has shown that some of the key benefits of using an online portfolio are: • Access to ready-made templates for recording CPD activities • Easily accessible from anywhere via the internet

• Provide extensive and secure storage • Ability to upload previously produced documents • Able to access wider CPD resources and training • Transferable between roles and organisations Apart from the key benefits mentioned above, there are other features to look for when deciding which portfolio would suit you best... Features of the portfolio – check the key features of the portfolio and then decide whether it meets your needs. Is it just a portfolio for basic recording of CPD or are there additional features such as access to online CPD opportunities, links to other resources, etc. How easy is it to record your CPD activity? Can you customise templates? Can you upload certificates and other documents and organise them easily? Can you print easily? How it looks and ease of use – how appealing the portfolio looks to you will depend to some extent on your preferred style. However its overall appearance may also be an indication of how easy it will be to use; would you need to learn a new and unfamiliar system before you can start to use it? Can you try it out before committing to subscribe? Compatibility with HCPC or other professional formats – some online portfolios present their templates and tools in a way that is compatible with HCPC or other professional formats – is this helpful to you? Would you prefer more flexibility to produce things in your own way? IT compatibility/access/security – is it compatible with your computer/mobile/tablet and how easy is it to access? Checking what IT specification you need to be able to operate it and whether it accessible through a mobile app, internet access etc. How your data is kept secure and what happens to it if you decide to stop your registration with the service? Is it transferable internationally, across different job roles etc. Financial considerations – most online portfolios use either regular subscriptions or an annual fee for the supply of their service. What features are included in the fee? Are there any hidden or additional costs? How do you know when renewal is due? How easy is it to leave the service? Are there any penalties for doing this?

Level of support – including technical or practical support with completing templates. How is support provided – remote via email or internet or is there a phone line? Are there prompts, guidelines or FAQ’s to help you with common problems? Ability to share information – this is useful if you want to easily share your information with others for example your supervisor for your appraisal, or for HCPC audit etc. Additional resources – most portfolios have additional resources as well as the portfolio function – such as CPD information, access to online training, links to other CPD resources, regular updates and reminders....consider what would be most helpful to you CPD Online was created by occupational therapists for occupational therapists and so provides users with industry specific information together with tailored templates that capture CPD evidence within the OT sector. Launch of OT Practice children’s service is a great success! The OT Practice has recently launched OT Practice Kids and we are thrilled with the results. Whilst our adult provision is well established & successful we recognised that we were seeing a huge increase in demand for children’s occupational therapy delivered in the same way. We wanted to ensure we were delivering the same high standards for our youngest client group so we developed a service designed specifically around them and with our ethos of ‘quality without compromise’ at the heart. The service is led by Sarah, herself an experienced paediatric Occupational Therapist. Sarah says “bringing my clinical experience in-house to develop The OT Practice Kids service is such an exciting opportunity.
