According to CBRE, across the major European markets including Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London, a total of 38MW of customer IT power was sold in the first half of 2014, 68% higher compared to the same period of 2013. This bodes well for data centre providers across Europe. Finally, a survey by Colt has revealed that data centre complexity is becoming a worry for IT managers. Maybe we should revert to the maxim; keep it simple, stupid!

NEWS IN BRIEF ■ EURO GROWTH According to CBRE, across the major European markets including Amsterdam, Frankfurt and London, a total of 38MW of customer IT power was sold in the first half of 2014, 68% higher compared to the same period of 2013. Frankfurt and Amsterdam have experienced particularly strong activity this year. Total take-up in Frankfurt at the close of the second quarter totalled 13.2MW, more than twice the amount sold in the same period of last year. In Amsterdam total take-up now exceeds that achieved in the full year of 2013 and at midyear a total of 11.7MW has been sold in the Dutch capital, the highest six month total recorded. Driven by sustained customer interest these markets continue to be the subject of investment in 2014 with many of the major operators advancing build out programs to accommodate new business.
Research shows that complexity is a worry New independent research commissioned by Colt Technology Services amongst European IT managers, has revealed widespread concern around the impact of complexit y on planning data centre infrastructure strategy. The survey results – published in the Planning Anxiety report – found that 70 per cent of IT managers were concerned about the complexit y of planning data centre strategy. Furthermore, for a large proportion, complexity leads to a degree of planning anxiety, which is causing IT managers to spend a disproportionate amount of time and resource planning data centre strategy. According to the research, 90 per cent of IT managers feel anxious about data centre planning, and this impacts their work. Over half (54 per cent) state they spend more time on data centre strategy planning than they should. Security was cited as a primary source of complexity and cause for anxiety, with 6 4 per cent stating that security is the most important area of consideration when planning data centre infrastructure strategy. The threat of a security breach – through virus or
network attack - is also the data centre risk which causes greatest concern (36%). For IT managers seeking to expand their operations abroad, regulation issues – defined as ‘restrictive and unfamiliar legislation’ – was cited as the greatest difficulty for one third (33 per cent). This was followed by 28 per cent who highlighted technical migration as the biggest hurdle. Detlef Spang, EVP for Data Centre Services at Colt: “The data centre is a fundamental part of any organisations infrastructure, but for IT managers keeping their data centre strategy in line with their evolving business needs is an ongoing battle. IT managers must negotiate a variety of strategic, business-critical
Glasgow expansion Pulsant has announced the expansion of its South Gyle tier 3 data centre site, based just outside of Edinburgh, with the construction of a new facility. The expansion project includes the construction of two ne w data halls, consisting of up to 6 4 racks in each, as well as build and configuration rooms and secure storage areas. The ne w facility will feature two-factor authentication security access and will be configurable according to specific customer requirements. “This expansion is part of Pulsant’s overall growth strategy which includes upgrading and growing our existing data centre sites,” says Matt Lovell, CTO, Pulsant. “The drive behind this strateg y is to ensure we deliver cost-effective, highly secure, environmentally sound services to our customers through our technologically up-todate facilities that deliver maximum uptime, redundanc y and support.” The expansion project is scheduled for completion in F ebruary 2015.

issues. Driving simplicity across IT infrastructure, and in particular the data centre, is therefore key.” However, a further Colt report reveals the extent of the data centre challenge ahead. 90 per cent of IT decision makers believe that their data centre infrastructure will need to evolve over the next two years to meet future business needs (source: Colt Tech Deficit). IT managers will increasingly align with trusted third parties that enable them to achieve this simplicity goal whilst also increasing flexibility and mitigating risk. Spang concludes, “IT managers and data centre managers will increasingly need to find strategic partners. These partnerships can deliver
benefits such as reducing the risk of medium to long-term planning based on today’s view, allowing IT managers to adapt solutions quickly and enabling IT departments to leverage specialist industry expertise around areas such as security and resilience. IT decision makers should also consider the additional valueadd services that some colocation providers offer. They need a partner that will grow with them both in region and abroad – removing the regulation and uncertainty which exists in new markets. It’s reassuring from the research to see that such a high proportion of respondents who chose colocation as a strategy believe that it will deliver against business goals.”
Managed service
D
imension Data is deploying globally standardised managed services for data centres. Built on the group’s state-of-the-ar t managed services automation platform, the portfolio manages server, storage and networks for on-premise, cloud and hybrid data centres. Earlier this year, Dimension Data announced it would quadruple the size of its data centre business to USD 4 billion by 2018. The launch of this suite of managed services is the next step in a set of strategic initiatives to expand the group’s capability to consistently support domestic and multinational clients’ data centre transformation requirements. Steve Joubert, Dimension Data’s group executive for data centres says, “We’re seeing a shift away from clients o wning and managing their own data centre to outsourcing the entire infrastructure, or the management of the environment. Even with the advent of cloud, Technology Business Research recently reported that 70% of private cloud adopters will utilise third parties to manage their environments. “With Managed Services for Data Centres, clients maintain technology flexibility, while we automate routine transactional and knowledge work across the network, ser ver, and storage for onpremise and cloud environments.”

NEWS IN BRIEF ■ NEXT GEN Next Generation Data (NGD) has been backed by Finance Wales as part of a £5 million mezzanine and debt coinvestment package. Since receiving the investment NGD have almost doubled its workforce at its Newportbased tier 3 data centre facility, which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and staffed by highly-skilled specialists. NGD provides a cost-effective alternative to similar UK facilities and since receiving investment it has grown considerably by securing major contracts with blue chip clients in the corporate, government and cloud computing sectors. The company now provides services for global brands such as IBM and Wipro Technologies and has experienced over 60% growth in sales over the last three years, to the extent where NGD has been able to repay Finance Wales early. ■ CHINESE WAY Schneider Electric has won the bid from Baidu to build an M1 containerized (prefabricated) data centre with Schneider Electric’s prefabricated data centre solutions. As Baidu’s first prefabricated data centre project, the eco-friendly data centre will feature fast deployment, low input and high capability operation from standardised to modular to prefabricated data centre in the age of cloud computing and big data.
Experience the future of the data centre - in Frankfurt With Frankfurt coming into focus as one of the most important European hubs for data infrastructure, it’s hardly surprising to find that Germany’s most prominent data centre professionals will gather near the Main River in late October to share ideas and discuss the possibilities of the data centre revolution. At peak times over 2.5 teraby tes of data per second are flo wing through the constantly-expanding IT infrastructure in Frankfurt - the new centre of data convergence in Europe. Government initiatives have combined with extraordinary levels of investment to transform Germany’s fifth-largest city into its most impor tant in terms of data infrastructure. On the 28th and 29th of October a greatly e xpanded Data Centre World emerges for the first time in F rankfurt, attracting an extraordinary mixture of expert voices from the world of data centre technology and provision, and presenting an unmissable opportunity to discover the latest de velopments, challenges and solutions in the world of the data centre professional. Over 200 key industry speakers will share their e xperiences and counsel for the road ahead, covering an e xhaustive range of topics including design and build, disaster recovery and business continuity, power management, virtualisation, compliance and risk management, software defined networking, and much more. DCW Frankfurt also features over 20 case studies from the public, private and academic sectors, adding detail and depth to the themes and topics of the gathering. Six theatres will accommodate keynote speakers and symposium contributors across themes including ‘Data Centres of the Future’, ‘Advances in Critical Power Equipment & Facilities’, ‘Virtualisation Infrastructure and Platforms’, ‘Software Defined Data Centres’ and ‘Data Centre Efficienc y’. With Germany so central to the issue of security in this period, Interxion’s senior technical consultant Markus Steckhan joins the ‘Advances in Critical Equipment and Facilities Management’ roster to discuss key security issues facing data centre de velopment in the fields of healthcare, government, education and the private sector, with topics ranging from physical security to data security and fire protection. This section of the expo also features Daniel Hackenberg from the University of Dresden, expounding on current best practices in energy-efficient air and water cooling in data centres, and addressing the design and structural consequences of the long-term separation of hot and cold air throughout the structure of a data centre. In ‘Software Defined Networks & Data Centre Efficienc y’, Prof. Hermann de Meer from the University of Pass au will outline the roadmap for energy savings and power shifting in data centres, looking at schemes based on the consumption of rene wable energy sources, and the benefits of par ticipation in energy reserve schemes. Some of the most exciting subjects at DCW Frankfurt will emerge from the ‘Data Centres of the F uture’ forum. In one keynote Falk Stern from small-world network provider X ING will discuss how

FOODfor THOUGHT
Franek Sodzawiczny CEO, Zenium Technology Partners
Is it ok to think of data centres as life support systems for computer operations? After all, the servers are reliant on the delivery of three critical support systems - power, cooling and connectivity. This ‘out of the box’ thinking led me to consider the major role that energy efficiency and reduction in CO2 emissions has played in the evolution of the data centre as a support system - but where will the next potential energy reducing solution come from? Is it even possible to make these further energy savings that everyone is demanding from their data centre operator partner? Let’s look at the facts. It is unlikely in the short term that hardware vendors are going to reduce the heat levels generated by their equipment, and, from a data centre operator perspective, we cannot remove communications or power requirements. Is the easiest option left to address cooling methods then? Where would we even start? Perhaps the ultimate challenge would be to push the boundaries of the operating conditions beyond current agreed limits? We know from experience of running data centres around the world that servers can handle a much wider range of temperatures than those stipulated; so there is flexibility. However with aggressive SLA’s in place and natural paranoia about protecting data, does anyone actually want to be the first to take that bold step? I think that the most interesting step-change ahead could potentially be way we – as an industry - tackle the design and build of the data centre facility itself. Teams would need to investigate how to create a dynamic concept that could move the air as needed which could also, in time, lead to reduced power density in the halls. Is this utopia? Ultimately if we want to benefit from potential cost savings in excess of 30% across the construction of the data centre, in parallel with reducing facilities management expenses and lowering energy costs, we are all going to have to be brave and introduce some dramatic new concepts. And for this to be successful, industrywide forces need to work together. Where do we sign up?
open source tools can help to manage a colocation where the server and the workstation are 6 00 kilometres apart. In the same forum, data centre manager Christian Altenberger, ICT manager of the city of Vienna for se ven years, will present a user report on the planning and commissioning of a highavailability qualitative data centre – an epic endeavour of project management. Data Centre World Frankfurt is no passive spectacle, ho wever, but a chance to interact and network directly with ke y minds that are driving the evolution of data centre design, implementation and policy. Most UK data centres will not be fit for purpose with five years
NEWS IN BRIEF ■ STANDARDS UK data centre managers need to be aware of ongoing work to standardise their sector and get involved in the process, or risk being caught out by new laws and penalties. This was the warning from data centre expert Mark Acton, critical product director at CBRE Norland Managed Services, while speaking to an audience of data centre managers, technicians and facilities managers last week. Mr Acton was addressing delegates at a dedicated data centre seminar day hosted by ebm-papst UK. Explaining the lack of genuine clear international standards for data centres, Mr Acton said: “There are also lots of competing bodies trying to occupy the data centre space – but nobody really knows what we should be doing [in terms of standards] or which best practice group we should be following and whose colours we should be pinning to our masts. “All of this gives environmental groups the opportunity to tell us what we should be doing the adverse media attention is potentially very dangerous for the sector.”
According to MigSolv, nearly 80% of the U K’s data centres will become unsuitable in just five years time.
An inspiring project
E
aton has been chosen to provide Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) that form a key part of the infrastructure of the ingenious and innovative WiSpire project. This is bringing affordable highspeed broadband services to the whole county of Norwich, including not only the main population centres, but also the county’s many small and isolated communities. WiSpire is a joint venture between two organisations that might, at first sight, appear to be unlikely partners: FreeClix, a leading ISP, telecom and IT integrator based in Norwich, and the Church of England Diocese of Norwich, which serves and supports churches, schools and communities throughout Norfolk. Both organisations, however, have a strong interest in securing the future
8 DATAcentreMANAGEMENT BUYERS’ GUIDE 2014/15
of communities in Norfolk and both have assets that are essential for the success of the WiSpire project. The success of WiSpire depends on finding a suitable elevated location for the transmitters, and the ingenious solution adopted by FreeClix and the Diocese of Norwich is to put them in parish churches throughout the county. This approach has several benefits: almost every community, no matter how small, has a parish church and it’s often on high ground close to the centre of the community; the churches almost invariably have high towers or spires that provide excellent locations for the WiSpire aerials; and secure space can readily be found in most churches to accommodate the transmitters and associated equipment.
Alex Rabbetts, CEO MigSolv told The Stack, “Much of today’s stock is in need of a major re-fit or refurbishment. While larger data centre players are better equipped to cope with ageing-facilities, others simply don’t have the capacity to be able to carry out a re-fit without major disruption to service. Not nearly enough upto-date space will be ready to meet a demand driven by the corporate shift to cloud computing.” Rabbetts continued, “The plant infrastructure of these earlier units is, at best, exhausted. Data centres that are 10-15 years old are ready for major plant replacement, but there is a problem. A supposedly ‘Tier 3’-rated data centre will have N+1 CRAC, (Computer Room Air Conditioning), units but they probably share a single pipework system, and N+1 UPS, (Uninterruptible Power Supplies), that probably share a common bus bar system. The infrastructure, which was never what it was claimed to be, is in need of replacement and the resultant downtime. With current occupancy levels at near maximum at some of
these facilities, how can they carry out the urgent works that are necessary? With the expected delays, what kind of impact will this have on businesses? Steve Wallage, managing director, BroadGroup Consulting, added: “It is a complex area. You will hear vendors claim that a data centre built, even a year ago is already obsolete. Others will argue that the move to cloud will render most existing data centres obsolete within the next several years. The reality has been that many data centres have lasted far longer than expected. A European co-location provider recently asked customers if it should mothball a facility built in the early 1990s, only to be told that these customers were very happy at the current site.” Clearly no data centre provider will ever admit to running a sub-standard facility but the reality is many have been failing in recent times and it is going to get worse. Rabbetts concluded: “The fear of major outages, as well the need to be always on, will mean data centre providers are going to need to be ever more resourceful and versatile.”
Four new data centres
A
cronis has opened four new data centres in Asia and Europe in addition to already working datacentres in the U S and France. The new data centres, located in in Germany; Japan; Russia and Singapore, bring secure, localised data protection to Asian and European businesses that are concerned about the privacy and security of their data. “Today, businesses feel apprehensive about storing their data in regions far from their own,” said Stanislav Protassov, Acronis cofounder and senior VP of engineering and R&D.

NEWS IN BRIEF ■ INVESTMENT Viatel is set to invest €125 million in a major expansion. Over the coming year, the firm will invest in extending its fibre infrastructure, cloud services and data centres, and will execute on a stream of acquisitions, supported by newly announced funding partner, Proventus Capital Partners. “This is an exciting time for Viatel,” says company CEO, Colm Piercy, “While we already connect 150 data centres, and thousands of multinational enterprises and organisations across Western Europe, this investment will now enable us to enhance our services and to extend our reach further and deeper within Europe, and to connect new locations in the USA, Canada, the Middle East and Asia” he adds. ■ PARTNERS Virtus Data Centres has announced that the C4L Partner Network has signed a five year agreement to deploy 36 cabinet pods at each of its LONDON1 and LONDON2 data centres in Enfield and Hayes. The agreement means C4L will install two new dedicated pods delivering up to 36 cabinets at a minimum of 108kW, with the flexibility to increase the density to in excess of 300kw per pod per year.
University research benefits from joint data centre initiative Infinity has secured a five year fr amework agreement with Janet, the UK’s national research and education network, provided by Jisc. The deal sees the creation of a Jisc data centre to suppor t the requirements for academic research and will be the first shared data centre for medical and academic research in the UK. The funding of approximately £900,000, to make the facility happen, has been provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, HEFCE. At launch in September 2014, the Jisc data centre will house the IT of a consortium of six of the UK’s most successful scientific and academic organisations. Tim Marshall, executive director Jisc technologies and CEO Janet said: “By having the shared data centre users can access off-site data storage and services. This world-leading facility will mean that users can
consolidate their sensitive data in one safe environment and increase collaboration, whilst saving money both in terms of their operational costs and by not having to repeatedly procure facilities.” Infinity will operate the data centre at its Slough data centre. The design combines a traditional three tier data centre with a flexible range of low to high power rack densities and an aggregated discount pricing structure across all organisations using the service, ensuring that the infrastructure is workload focused and value driven. This is the first large scale e xample of high performance computer environments being placed in an outsourced co-location facility and the average density across all platforms is 10kWs per rack.
Switched on
Global Switch has become the first large sc ale, carrier neutral, multi tenanted data centre provider in L ondon to participate in the Climate Change Agreement (CCA). Global Switch’s London customers will no longer be liable for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) payments. This change will apply from 1 September 2 014 to energy used by existing customers who take metered power and to all new customers going forward.
The UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the CCA for data centres in his Autumn statement in December 2013. It provided a concession from the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme for the data centre industry, following extensive lobbying by techUK of which Global Switch is an active member. Since this announcement Global Switch has worked closely with techUK to enter into a Climate Change Agreement (CCA) with the UK’s Environment Agency having satisfied all of their requirements. Global Switch has offered green power for all 70MW of the connected capacity at its London data centre since 2009. Those customers that switched to green power have therefore benefitted from a Climate Change Levy (CCL) exemption since then. The CCA is the
next phase of continuous improvement and value to all customers. Derek Allen, Global Switch’s group director of operations and one of the early members of the Data Centre Council of techUK, said, “I am delighted that Global Switch has been given assent to the underlying CCA in the UK. This is recognition of the leading position Global Switch has in the data centre market and the growth in the sector. I believe the investment we have undertaken at our London data centre campus including upgrade to our cooling infrastructure and working with customers to improve their efficiencies has been central to our strategy. I am confident that going forwards we can meet or exceed energy control measures demanded by membership of the CCA scheme.”

The system uses outdoor air indirectly through a specially designed series of heat exchangers enabling cooling to take place without outdoor air entering the data hall, therefore air pollution hazards such as smoke and salt aerosols are kept out of the building. Our greatest innovations are the heat transfer medium, adiabatic data centre cooling method and the arrangement of both, which together form the essence of the system efficiency. In most cases, this allows our product to be used without mechanical cooling being needed. Since the introduction of our product, data centre operators no longer have to rely on energy hungry mechanical cooling and can dramatically reduce their infrastructure, operating and maintenance costs.

Dycem Limited is the world leader in polymeric technology and manufacture in the UK. Dycem products are used extensively in critical environments across the globe, especially in the Design and Build operations of Data Centres. Dust and dirt particles are well known enemies of the Communication Industry and are of course a consequence of any build, no matter the design. The current trends in the design/build or refurbishment of data centres highlight energy conservation, “free air”, air quality, and cost. Particle contamination affects those trends. Dycem products are the most efficient and cost effective method of trapping particulates, preventing them from entering into critical environments. Visit our booth/stand and hear from our experts in Contamination Control, and while there physically see the levels of contamination generated in environments. Come take part in simple demonstrations to understand how easy Dycem is to work with, and the benefits it can bring to your business.

energy consumption based on the data from these different systems, thereby facilitating the cost-efficient operation of data centers. The solution gives data center employees a wide range of tools for planning and simulation including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), asset management and power monitoring. It acts as a cockpit for operators who can optimize and forecast the data center's infrastructure based on the aggregated data. The software also makes it possible to increase the availability of the data center and improve its operational efficiency. Multidimensional dashboards and KPI assessments provide information about the data center's performance. Real-time monitoring as well as alarm and event notification makes it possible to quickly take corrective action in the event of a malfunction.

DATAcentreMANAGEMENT I BUYERS’ GUIDE 2014/15 I 63
THE LAST WORD
Q&A
M AT T LO V E L L CTO at Pulsant
Matt graduated with an honours degree in Industrial Management and holds a number of other post graduate qualifications. He joined Astra Zeneca in 1994 and chose to develop his career in IT, working in several global consultancy roles within Microsoft and Perot Systems before joining Severn Trent Plc as CTO in 2000. In 2011, he joined the Board at Pulsant as CTO.
How did you become involved in the IT industry? My IT career started during my degree industrial placement whilst supporting IT systems within the chemical manufacturing area for Zeneca Pharmaceuticals Who has been the biggest influence on your career? I worked for an e xcellent IT manager at Perot Systems who really shaped my IT project and leadership skills, and supported me through some really challenging roles What is the biggest issue in the data centre at the moment? Delivery of efficiencies in older data centres. Data centres are longer term capital investments and as technolog y advances it can be difficult to maintain the competitiveness and drive towards lower efficiencies in such sites in comparison to brand new facilities. As the transformation from colocation to cloud solutions gathers momentum over the next few years, data centres will be challenged to find ways to incrementally improve efficiencies as the requirements of cloud environments change. What is the question you are asked most often in your business life? How do we reduce risk? Whether it is transformation of IT landscape and outcomes to transitioning systems between solutions, sites or providers, we are all focused on managing the risks associated with change more effectively. What are the best/worst things about your job? IT provides a deep, rich and constantly changing landscape to work in which makes it e xciting, demanding and enjoyable. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? I was taught that e xperience is priceless so I would recommend taking the initiative and learning from any
project roles they can and evolve themselves in developing new skills such as programming or project management. These skills will be used throughout your IT career. Which living person do you most admire and why? The Queen. I have huge respect for her leadership and guidance of the Commonwealth and her tireless suppor t of all good causes. Where would you like to live? I like to travel and see many different places. Home is the UK but I have been for tunate to live and work in many places all over the world. What is your favourite book? One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez If you could go back in time, where would you go? Early 1900s – so many amazing advances were being made in terms of flight, medicine, industr y, communication, welfare and travel. Understanding ho w we were developing so many aspects of our lives and bringing this to the benefit of so many people must have been fascinating. How do you relax? By playing sport and being with friends and family. I love being outside as most of my job keeps me in the office. You will find me most weekends in my garden busy doing something. What sports team do you support? West Ham United and Nottingham F orest. I love watching all sorts of sports. The Invictus Games were immense. What is your desert island disc? Brian Eno the Godfather of Ambient or Classic F M’s most relaxing classics. Music is really impor tant to me. What is your ideal holiday? A mix of water spor ts, seeing historic places and relaxing next to the sea.
