The data centre market continues to grow and I was recently at an event where Netsuite announced the launch of its first European data centres in Ireland and Amsterdam. It was interesting to see that they had not located the data centres in the UK. When asked the CEO said there were a number of reasons for this, and one was of course the tax system. It will be

interesting to see if this state of affairs will affect the UK data centre industry in the future. Perhaps the industry should be lobbying for tax breaks for data centres. The EU Court of Justice ruling that has invalidated the agreement between EU and US organisations on data transfers has left Facebook, Amazon and others scrambling to overhaul their businesses practices to avoid breaking EU law and losing EU customers. Safe Harbor will affect EU business and EU data centres and DCM will continue to cover this issue in the coming months.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Research debunks myths

■ SUITE CHOICE NetSuite has announced the opening of two major data centre deployments in Europe, one in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the other in Dublin, Ireland. The two data centres will support NetSuite’s growth in Europe. Both data centres are expected to be operational this calendar year. NetSuite’s EU data centres will enable companies to store their NetSuite business data physically in the Eur opean Union. This is especially significant given that the EU Court of Justice has declared the EU-US Safe Harbour framework invalid.

VMware, has announced research that debunks the millennial myth and reveals employees across all ages in the UK have significant influence within businesses to drive digital transformation.

■ LEASING Cannon Technologies has announced the introduction of a data centre leasing service that is designed to offer organisations a comprehensive solution to all medium-term capacity challenges. This new service offers all the benefits of Cannon Technologies’ modular data centr e technology, with no upfront capital investment. With a minimum lease period of one year, it is a solution for those looking to temporarily expand their operations, migrate from an existing facility to a new one, or maintain uptime while work is carried out on a data centre. Based on a ‘pay as you go’ model, customers can configure their leased modular data centre to meet their exact technological and budgetary requirements, ensuring maximum flexibility and cost effectiveness.

The study of 5,700 employees across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) including 1,000 employees in the UK, found that, far from being confined to the ‘millennial’ or ‘Generation Z’ demographics, digital skills are a priority for all employees – impacting both their own career development and the broader business. Recognised benefits of the widespread use

of digital skills by UK employees include improving the competitive edge of an organisation (75%) and increasing revenue/profitability for the business over the next five years (69%). 73% of employees, meanwhile, believe it enables greater collaboration between colleagues. With 61% of UK employees willing to use their own time to learn new digital

iDaC Solutions has announced the addition of custom-made containerised MDC’s to its product portfolio. Available in any length (from 10-40ft) and with custom design packages, they are able to accommodate a variety of applications and budgets. These containerised mobile data centres are based around the form-factor of a standard shipping container (ISO High-Cube) making them easy to transport, modular (for scalability), low maintenance and physically robust. However, unlike other manufacturers’ solutions, which are made from adapted shipping containers, these units are purpose built in Germany. By making them to order, the client can specify every aspect of the build to ensure that the environmental, technical and space requirements of their project are met, without compromise. Paul Cattell, managing director of IDAC Solutions is pleased to offer customers this additional product offering “Some of our global clients were looking for a MDC solution, but didn’t like the ‘onesize-fits all’ approach. We wanted to provide a quality solution, with unique features, that would fit well with our existing range of high performance cabling infrastructure solutions and that would offer greater flexibility for our customers. This product fitted the bill perfectly.”

skills and ways of working, the recognition of the role digital skills can play, and the appetite for learning these, is evident. Furthermore, older generations of the workforce are actively pursuing more technical digital skills, with 35% of 45-54 year olds and 23% of 55 years and over respectively, seeking advice or training on designing and building mobile applications.

47% of 45 - 54 year olds are doing the same for coding and creating online content. “Profoundly changing skillsets in today’s digital age are transforming the way businesses are run, impacting how strategy, direction and decisions themselves are formulated,” says Matt Crosby, head of expertise, UK and Ireland at global management consulting firm Hay Group.

Solid launch brightsolid has announced the opening of its second Tier III data centre. The built on the Aberdeen Journal’s Lang Stracht site in Aberdeen, has been designed to the highest technical specification and will provide unrivalled digital infrastructure to Europe’s Energy Capital. Completed in just nine months, brightsolid’s latest data centre represents a £5 million investment into Aberdeen’s digital economy, and as the only Scottish partner of the Microsoft Cloud OS Network, provides the first Microsoft Azure-enabled cloud platform in Scotland. Located at the centre of Aberdeen’s energy triangle, the facility delivers best practice in business continuity, flexibility and choice. “I’m delighted to have reached this pivotal moment in our three year strategy after such an exciting two years,” said Richard Higgs, CEO of brightsolid. “We decided to build our next Tier III data centre in Aberdeen for a number of reasons. Our primary facility in Dundee was reaching capacity due to the positive market response to our clouds, and expansion was always in our business strategy. After a detailed review of the market we realised that Aberdeen had an absolute need for a world class data centre and cloud partner that could help deliver on cost saving efficiency objectives.”

Fully accredited

G

eist Europe now has ISO 14001:2004 accreditation having recently undergone the final audit required to demonstrate conformity. The IS0 14001 standard helps organisations effectively manage their Environmental Management Systems (EMS) through their operational processes. Kevin Loxham, QA manager said, “We’re very pleased to gain the ISO14001 accreditation. We started the process just under 12 months ago and this strengthens the reputation we have as a world-class manufacturer.”

HP becomes the market leader New Q2 data from Synergy Research Group shows that HP has gained leadership of the cloud infrastructure equipment market, having lagged closely behind Cisco through 2013 and 2014. In Q1 the two vendors were tied but in Q2 HP opened up a lead by achieving much stronger sequential revenue growth. The two leading vendors are each achieving stellar revenue growth in the burgeoning market, but as HP maintained a 13% worldwide market share in Q2 Cisco’s share dropped by half a percentage point. The two are followed by Microsoft, Dell, IBM, EMC, VMware, Lenovo and Oracle. Across the different types of cloud deployment, Cisco continues to hold a commanding lead in public cloud infrastructure while HP has a clear lead in private cloud. Total cloud infrastructure equipment revenues, including hardware and software, are now running at some $16 billion per quarter, having grown by 25% year on year. “The public cloud services market is clearly booming and driving heavy investment in

cloud infrastructure, while a rapid transition to cloud is also in full swing in the enterprise IT market,” said Jeremy Duke,

New data centre campus opens in Istanbul Data centre specialist, Zenium Technology Partners, has launched its data centre campus in Istanbul. Strategically located in close proximity to the new International Financial Centre, Zenium Istanbul One is the first data centre campus in Turkey to offer bespoke wholesale solutions. Operated on a carrier neutral basis, it is widely expected that the campus will become the key hub for connectivity in the region. The Istanbul One campus comprises three self-contained, purpose-designed buildings totalling 12,000 square meters of high specification technical space and boasts an unrivalled power supply with 30MVA available from diverse feeds. These mission-critical facilities are also the first to be designed to meet the highest level of earthquake code allowing for immediate use and continued operation following a seismic event. Istanbul One is the first in a series of planned data centre facilities to be opened by Zenium in Turkey, illustrating the company’s goal to set the standard for wholesale solutions in the region. Wholesale colocation is readily available in more developed markets, increasing cost-efficiency and the availability of much needed IT infrastructure. Until now there has been a lack of quality data centre space in Turkey and no supply of wholesale solutions.

Synergy Research Group’s founder and chief analyst. “Cisco continues to ride these waves very successfully, but

what has enabled HP to grab the lead is the fact that servers and storage account for almost two thirds of the market and HP is now rapidly evolving its huge business in these segments. By contrast Cisco dominates the relatively much smaller networking segment, while its burgeoning cloud server business still lags far behind HP in scale. The good news for all vendors is that this huge market is growing rapidly and in aggregate the two leaders only account for a quarter of it – much the same as they did a year ago.”

Global hubs Digital Realty and GMEX Technologies will establish multiple global hubs for new product exchanges and trading venues in Digital Realty’s facilities. The first hub will be located in London at Digital Realty’s Chessington data centre. The London trading hub will enable established communities to access and trade emerging markets securities easily, cost-effectively, and securely from a central location. Market operators will be able to expand beyond their own geographical boundaries and provide new opportunities for market participants to access a wider range of asset classes - including securities, commodities, derivatives, and FX. “Building on our established capital markets expertise, this is an exciting extension to our business model of delivering true partnerships with exchanges in emerging markets, with the aim of bringing them to liquidity,” commented Hirander Misra, CEO of GMEX Technologies and Co-Founder of GMEX Group. “We can offer our cloud-enabled trading and clearing market infrastructure ecosystem paired with the best talent, connectivity, technology, operational excellence, and business expertise facilitated by the technical infrastructure provided by Digital Realty.”

NEWS

The state of the market 2015 Data Centre Management takes a look at some recent market reports and concludes that the market still seems to be in good health

R

esearch from a number of organisations seems to suggest that the data centre market still has plenty of grounds for optimism in the coming months and years. The latest DC Radar report published by design and consultancy firm Arcadis contacted owners, builders and occupiers of 2.1 million square meters of European technical real estate. The survey conducted by the independent research company iXConsulting , revealed that 70% of respondents believe the next 12 months will see an increase in demand, with the majority (77%) of developer and investor responders having already expanded their portfolio of data centre stock in the last year. It is expected that over the next five years the growth in demand for data centre services will be driven by IT and cloud service providers. Over 70% of respondents identif ied this sector as their top ranked source of demand, well ahead of the next category of banking & financial services, which was voted top by just 19% of those surveyed. However, despite overall rising levels of confidence, there were concerns expressed over the industry's ability to continue to match supply with demand. Over half of respondents (55%) thought that a pinch point had developed in the design and build process with regard to sufficiently skilled professional contractor staff. Equally, a further (54%) agreed that predicted construction cost inflation of between 10-20% over the next three years will have a negative impact on development across Europe. Respondents to the survey collectively operate across 28 European countries. While strong growth was recorded in the traditional centres of Lond on, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, due primarily to their relative maturity, stability, advanced general infrastructure and strong fibre connectivity, there was also a growing interest in more secondary and tertiary centres. Significantly, almost 60% agreed that a rise in the cost of land and total build cost inflation would see demand shifting away from Tier 1 centres and towards new competitive locatio ns. A number of Scandinavian countries – namely Finland, Sweden and Norway – proved particularly popular, with one quarter of respondents citing them as potential beneficiaries. Turkey was chosen as a favoured location by 15% of respondents, with Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic also proving relatively popular. Commenting on the findings, James Hart, partner at Ar cadis, said: “Improving economic conditions

6 DATAcentreMANAGEMENT BUYERS’ GUIDE 2015/16

across Europe have underpinned the positive sentiment we’re seeing in the data centre industry. However, as a real estate asset they remain relatively difficult for any occupier to plan, build and operate. An ever-changing demand profile driven by new business practices and advancing technology means that self-management can be a continuous battle between CAPEX/ OPEX and internal business demand, all of which makes out-sourcing an increasingly attractive solution. Indeed, nearly twothirds of our respondents are actively using over 80% of their third-party managed technical space, compared to just 42% who maintain proportionate usage of their in-house assets.” The Nordic region is also set to benefit from significant data centre investment over the next three yea rs, of an estimated €3.3billion with more than 49% derived from overseas Internet players. Findings of a new report by BroadGroup, Data Centre Nordics, covering Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, and 112 operators, suggest that the market in third party data centres will increase by almost two and a half times in square metre space and triple megawatt power requirements from current levels by t he end of 2017. Denmark benefits hugely through the construction of a vast new Apple data centre in Viborg, central Jutland. The region’s attractiveness as a data centre location relies on a mix of lower cost and taxes for an abundance of renewable energy, particularly hydro-electric and wind power, incentives offered by inward investment agencies, highly educated workforce and standards of governance. Indu strial electricity pricing in the Nordic Region remains the lowest in the EU-28 countries. The

report finds that energy providers range as low as €0.03 per kW Hour, excluding taxes, with the Nord Pole (Ulea) region in Northern Sweden and Western Norway offering the lowest electricity costs for data centre facilities. “The Nordic Region is set for growth with new demand, build and market entrants,” comment ed Philip Low, managing director, BroadGroup. “Lower power costs, abundant resources of green energy, local and international investment, connectivity, taxation incentives, and natural cooling efficiencies present a formidable argument for consideration in the international IT deployment plans of any global enterprise.” In global terms data from Synergy Research Group shows that the US now accounts for 44% of major cloud and internet data centre sites, followed by China which accounts for 10%. The two leading countries are then followed by Australia, UK, Japan, Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands, each of which accounts for 4-5% of the total. The research is based on an analysis of the data centre footprint of 13 of the world’s major cloud and internet service firms, including the largest operators in I aaS, PaaS, SaaS, search, social networking and e-commerce. In aggregate the companies now have almost 150 major data centre sites. On average each of the 13 firms had 11 data centre sites. The companies with the broadest data centre footprint are the leading hyperscale cloud providers – AWS, IBM and Microsoft. Each has 20 or more data centre locations with at least one in each of the four regions – North A merica, APAC, EMEA and Latin America. Google, Oracle and Rackspace also have a notably broad data centre presence. The remaining firms tend to have their data centres focused primarily in either the US (Salesforce, Facebook, eBay, Yahoo) or China (Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba). “The country distribution of major data centres clearly reflects two things – the US dominance of cloud and internet technologies; and the scale and unique characteristics of the Chinese market,” said John Dinsdale, a chief analyst and research director at Synergy Research Group. “The ranking also reflects the relative importance of smaller countries that are often used as regional hubs – Hong Kong, Singapore, Netherlands and Ireland. Until recently India was an omission from the list but Microsoft has just opened its first major cloud d ata centres in the country and both AWS and IBM will soon be following suit.”

TRAINING

PROTECTING THE FUTURE of the data centre industry Andrew Stevens, CEO, CNet Training, looks at the importance of training and how to entice more people into the data centre industry

W

ith the growth rate for data transfer across the globe accelerating at an enormous rate year-on-year, the role of data centres in everyone’s life is becoming more essential, so what can be done to help protect this vital part of everyone’s lives to ensure we can all continue ‘business and pleasure as usual’? First, it is important to understand the potential challenges and how can we overcome them. The cost of getting it wrong The latest data centre outage figures show an increase of 41% in cost from 2010 to an incredible $7,900 per minute. This, coupled with the fact that 91% of data centres have experienced an unplanned data centre outage in the past 24 months, not only highlights the astronomical cost of an outage, but also suggests that the chances of it actually happening are surprisingly high. Added to this, the fact that one of the main causes of a data centre outage is human error, an issue that can be addressed quite easily. Considering the cost of an outage, one

wonders why more data centre managers do not follow a plan for on-going professional training and certification with their staff. The cost of just one minute of an outage could pay to train, qualify and professionally certify two data centre technicians. Technical knowledge & skills With the growth of the industry, the ongoing reliance on people, and the need to reduce outages, there are many opportunities for talented and trained people within the industry. Working within a data centre environment is highly technical and it is unfortunate that we are already experiencing a skills shortage. Gartner predicted that 4.4m jobs would be created by 2015 due to the demand for Big Data alone and only one third of these roles will actually be filled. Today, 41% of data centres are recruiting, so the opportunities are there for the right people. What’s the solution? Along with the need to entice new talent into the data centre industry is the need for businesses to invest in on-going professional training and education for existing staff. By

It’s a fact that trained and educated staff show more commitment and loyalty to the organisation, they experience enhanced job satisfaction and morale knowing that they are doing their job well.

harnessing current knowledge and embarking on a structured approach to career development, in the form of new learning and skills development enhanced by professional qualifications and industry recognised certification, it will allow data centre managers to be confident that the data centre is in the right technical hands. Training return on investment (ROI) It’s a fact that trained and educated staff show more commitment and loyalty to the organisation, they experience enhanced job satisfaction and morale knowing that they are doing their job well. Professionally trained staff also provide the company with a training return on investment, this considers increased productivity, methodology and motivation due to the additional skills and knowledge gained. It’s not unusual to achieve a training ROI of greater than 500%; certainly something to consider from a business perspective. What training? Businesses and individuals need to be reassured that they are investing in the right data centre training programs for their needs and that they are undertaking their data centre training with the right professional organisation. One that allows delegates to benefit from receiving the right technical knowledge and awards both industry and globally recognised qualifications and certifications. CNet Training is an example of such a company, they have been delivering professional industry training for nearly 20 years and have built a trusted reputation across the globe for delivering high quality training throughout the entire data centre industry. Many organisations across the world also refer to The Global Data Centre & Network Infrastructure Framework that allows data centre professionals to map training to meet their requirements across their various data centre job roles.

Through its comprehensive range of compatible cables and transceivers, ProLabs is opening up the world of optical equipment and continually reducing costs for the end user. The ProLabs range allows users of multiple systems to combine previously incompatible products with relative ease; liberating its customers from vendor lock-in. ProLabs has expanded significantly in 2015, making a number of key executive appointments and establishing global distribution partnerships, resulting in ProLabs’ products being readily available in almost every country in the world. This growth has afforded the opportunity for the company to pursue more challenging projects such as its new range of compatible 100G products. ProLabs is now also looking towards multi-coded infrastructure – creating single products that are individually coded to myriad different OEM vendors. Such development allows data centre providers housing infrastructure from more than one OEM vendor, to stock significantly fewer spare parts – saving them both money and storage space. R&M helps people and organizations to communicate without restrictions. It's what we do. It's our passion. We see our job as making the very foundations of any network, i.e. passive cabling, as stable as possible. Everything we do is geared towards maximizing the performance and reliability of the communication infrastructure. Our passion for technology and innovation flows into our product development and manufacture. Every day, our exacting quality standards call for the very highest performance from our own production and from our suppliers. Our people on-site guarantee an excellent service, whether it involves delivery deadlines, technical advice or project management. And always with the aim of creating convincing cabling solutions. In 1964, Renato De-Massari and Hans Reichle developed what was then a revolutionary telephone outlet, thereby laying the cornerstone for R&M. They could not imagine at the time what the company would look like 50 years later. Today, more than 800 employees in over 30 countries work for R&M. The company's goal is to offer customers top-quality solutions for excellent communication networks. In doing so, R&M contributes to maximum operational security in voice, data and video transmission. Join us as we travel back in time to trace the company history of R&M. Network communications are shaping our lives more than ever before, they are one of the keys to the future. And it is our ambition to help shape that future, given that the demands of our IT society are increasing: • More and more: data volumes are soaring as more and more information is exchanged • Faster and faster: bandwidths are increasing, with everyone wanting high-speed

primary competitors are that in the first instance we designed our product from the ground up, specifically for the data centre cooling environment. Our greatest innovations are the heat transfer medium, adiabatic data centre cooling method and the arrangement of both, which together form the essence of the system efficiency. In most cases, this allows our product to be used without mechanical cooling being needed. Since the introduction of our product, data centre operators no longer have to rely on energy hungry mechanical cooling and can dramatically reduce their infrastructure, operating and maintenance costs. People are the foundation upon which Excool has developed, enabling us to carry out all aspects of design, manufacture, test and commission in-house. Continued personnel development is encouraged to ensure we stay at the forefront of the industry and to comply with the current and foreseeable legislation.

These well proven units are perfect for:• No Water in the Dataroom! • High Density Data Centres • Hot Spot Elimination • For Updates/Upgrades to existing ‘legacy’ datacentres. The warm air exiting the rack is cooled before returning to the room and this beautifully simple concept has been well received in the European market place and used as a complete replacement for water based systems but similarly it’s modularity and comparatively low installation costs make it attractive for small scale data installations where water based systems may have previously been considered. The modular nature of these coolers mean that there are many possible permutations to provide system resilience. DESIGN & BUILD

Modular FUTURE? The data centre has changed significantly down the years and it is now clear that in the right circumstances there are benefits of a scalable, modular data centre architecture. This gives the ability to “right-size” the data centre and have it grow with the business, making sure capital is only spent when necessary. DCM spoke to Kevin Brown of Schneider Electric, (below) who looks at the modular approach of data centre design and how business can benefit. Are modular data centres becoming more popular? There is certainly a trend in the UK towards modular data centres, so the short answer is yes. A lot of the initial

24 DATAcentreMANAGEMENT BUYERS’ GUIDE 2015/16

thinking on modular data centres has come from the UK. There is no question that modular is a hot bed of interest and activity in prefab. Is there a type of industry that better suits a modular data centre, or can it be adapted for all data centre providers? A modular data centre is a tool that you can use to solve a problem. There are different reasons why organisations want a modular data centre. For example in the oil and gas industry a data centre needs to be deployed as it is impossible to do a normal build. It needs to be rugged as they are going into environments that are less ideal for data centres. There is a big effort to make the data centre transportable and have as the minimum amount of on-site construction. Another reason for modular is in the healthcare market, where they need capacity, but there is no space inside the building and they don’t want a construction project. A third category which co-lo’s play into, is where speed of deployment is necessary and a standardised approach is necessary. We always look at the problem that a customer is trying to solve and then we can give them the best solution. What are the main benefits of a modular data centre? There are three main reasons for going modular. Firstly, flexibility and scalability, meaning you can add IT space, power and cooling capacity as

needed, adopting a pay-as-you-grow model rather than paying up front for capacity that may not be used for years. Secondly you can get dramatically faster deployment times. This is quite important, as by deploying a prefabricated data centre rather than opting for a traditional or 'stick built' DC, you can dramatically reduce your data centre deployment time from months to weeks. Finally, predictability and performance. It is possible to guarantee the power use effectiveness (PUE) factor of a prefabricated data centre as hundreds have been made. All testing is done in the factory, to ensure components are performing to specification, which you gives the customer the predictability they've paid for. Do you see a time when all new data centres will be modular? Not really. We see up to around 20 per cent of the market will be modular, but it will never be the majority of the market. Not all sites can take modular data centres. What drives people to sites is where can they get the bandwidth and the power. From that point they will then decide on the best approach for them. What are the main drivers for implementation of modular data centres? I still think that we are at an early point in the evolution of the modular data centre, but the main drivers are speed of deployment and predictable

DESIGN & BUILD

performance. There is a lot of rhetoric that says that modular data centres are less expensive, but they do not save that much money and you are getting other benefits including speed of deployment and a predictable PUE. You are also taking a lot of chaos out of the build as you are building the data centre in a factory, not onsite. As the market develops, greater volumes will mean more standardisation and there will also be an impact on lead times. At the moment it is around 16 weeks, but with some compromise I believe this could go

down to 8 weeks, but we are not quite there yet., but this will happen in the next 18 months. We are looking forward at providing even more value to customers. For co-lo’s this could also be important as if we can halve their lead time it will enable them to mange their capital better. Co-lo’s need to have their data centres up and running quickly as they need to be earning money on their investment. What have been the main leaps forward in building data centres

in the past couple of years and what is the future of data centre design and build? Until recently data centres were designed by IT departments separately to facility departments. I believe that there has to be no separation between these two departments if you want greater data centre efficiency. It has to be designed with the physical infrastructure. As we move towards the software defined data centre, it’d going to drive a wave of design that is a meeting of IT and facilities. Another factor is that there has been the idea that raising data centre temperatures will save energy. What doesn’t get mentioned is if you raise the data centre temperature you also increase the cost of IT energy consumption, so it’s a lot more complicated than people seem to think it is. I tell people when looking at data centres that you have to be looking at your IT policies as well as your physical design as that’s the only way to improve the energy efficiency of data centres. We have to continue to drive data centres to be more energy efficient and improve capital utilisation. Do you still see the data centre market growing? There will be no slowdown on the desire for IT performance. If you look at mobile devices, streaming video, IoT, smart homes, these are all coming onto the IT network. There is no end to the desire to have automation and consumption, therefore, the demand for scalable and efficient data centres will remain strong.

FOSTER ENVIRONMENTAL Crosby Grange, Ferry Road West, Scunthorpe, DN15 8UH, UK Tel: +44 (0)1724 270717 Web: www.fosterac.co.uk FM professionals appreciate the fact that one leading organisation in air conditioning understands its problems and speaks its language. Foster Environmental is an experienced operator working with some of Britain’s leading names in data centres and other operators of temperature critical environments. Consequently our understanding of your needs is unequalled. Trust your facilities to us and we begin with a complete audit of your operation highlighting areas of risk and flagging up opportunities for improvement. This leads directly to three advantages. First we identify areas where we might reduce the potential for problems and so create a more robust operating environment. Second we use our experience to suggest improvements which might increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption – sometimes with dramatic effects. Thirdly, we’re able to put into place some sophisticated automatic monitoring software which alerts us to minor problems which we can treat before they impact your operations and enables us to provide you with detailed reports on the efficiency of your plant Our clients sleep easier at night knowing that problems should they ever occur are dealt with quickly and effectively. Getting a quote and free survey of your plant is as easy as lifting the phone or clicking your computer mouse. Simply phone 01724 270717 or email sales@fosterac.co.uk and we’ll demonstrate how the future can be much more efficient and stress free.

Redetec® is the leading 19” Rack Mount Cabinet Fire Detection and Extinguishing System on the global market, providing localised fire protection to the most valuable assets within the data centre comms room, eliminating the threat to business continuity due to fire. Redetec Limited was established to develop better, more effective product solutions for the fire protection market. Redetec® is a complete modular fire protection unit for 19” equipment racks; located at the top of each cabinet, Redetec® gives complete protection of the equipment within the cabinet and a faster response to fire incidents. Redetec® offers a choice of point-type or high sensitivity smoke detection, an array of automatic and remote control features and a choice of gaseous extinguishing agents – all within a 2U x 19” rack mounting chassis. Redetec Limited has since established itself as the system of choice for high value process and mission critical operation protection. Further enhancements including High Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD) and Alerts via SNMP/SMTP have helped to maintain our reputation for innovative, value adding solutions. Advantages Redetec® is simple to specify, install and maintain. You buy only to protect each cabinet and capital cost is therefore greatly reduced; yet Redetec® can be expanded as systems are expanded. Redetec® is transportable and moves with the protected cabinet, without relocation cost. Downtime during maintenance or after an incident is minimised to one cabinet. Redetec® contributes to a responsible environmental policy by using much less extinguishant gas in close protection applications, which also avoids the need for the floor space which total flood systems require. Redetec® also has building and IT systems integration capabilities for real management control and further costs savings.

AIREDALE INTERNATIONAL AIR CONDITIONING Unit 3, Leeds Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS19 6JY, UK Tel: +44 (0)113 238 7735 Web: www.airedale.com The UK’s number one manufacturer of high performance precision air conditioning (PAC), IT cooling, chillers and air handling systems, Airedale International has a 40-year track record in the design and integration of energy-saving solutions to reduce ownership costs. The award-winning SmartCoolTM SD/SN/SR chilled water PAC (11-233kW) provides up to 30% more cooling per kW/m2 than comparable competitor units and will integrate with the InRakTM and OnRakTM rackbased IT cooling systems to deliver high performance, energy-saving aisle containment and hot spot cooling. Other award-winning products include the TurboChillTM FreeCool chiller (200-1830kW) available with the option of low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant R1234ze. Its cutting-edge technology allows the TurboChillTM to achieve an ESEER of up to 6.23, significantly higher than a traditional screw chiller. The AireFlowTM indirect fresh air adiabatic air handling unit (100-440kW) requires minimal mechanical cooling and delivers 100% free-cooling year round (London, UK) within the ASHRAE recommended envelope. No air mixing within the system prevents contaminants entering the data centre and eliminates the need for 100% DX back-up cooling. Airedale’s ACISTM Building Management System (BMS) provides a highly graphical, simple-to-use tool to manage cooling and other building services, from any manufacturer, providing 24/7 remote monitoring, optimising system operation and improving decision-making.

ALFA LAVAL LTD (UK) 7 Doman Road, Camberley, Surrey, GU15 3DN, UK Tel: +44 (0)1276 633833 Web: www.alfalaval.com Choosing cooling for your data center doesn’t have to be complicated. Alfa Laval has been a leader in industrial climate control for more than 100 years. We work with some of the most heat-sensitive applications imaginable, experience that lends itself well to the specialized needs of data centers. Alfa Laval’s highquality products meet the demands of all data center tier levels. We specialize in ways to take advantage of free cooling. Supply efficiency-optimized components for all types of cooling systems. We offer an innovative technology for server cooling that can lower energy use by up to 80%, compared to the current technology standard. Free cooling plays a vital role in the running costs of data centers. For energy savings, the ratio between mechanical cooling and free cooling is approximately 5 to 1. Our free cooling equipment utilizes the inexpensive cold medias from either air or water. Central in our free cooling systems are AHRI certified gasketed plate heat exchangers. The LSV cooling technology uses air coolers with a large cross-sectional area in order to keep the air speed low and avoid the related issues that comes with high air speed: Venturi effect, hot spots, pressure, energy consumption etc. The LSV principle uses coolers installed outside of the sensitive server room that draw return air from the upper plenum and quietly distribute enough cool air across the server room. The system makes sure sufficient air is being supplied.

Our latest offering is an exclusive range of containerised Modular Data Centres (MDC), based around the form-factor of a standard ISO container, but purpose built rather than configured from standard shipping units (unlike other manufacturers’). • They can be tailor made to any length (from 10-40ft) • Are designed exclusively to your specification and budget • Can be customised to accommodate your ‘optional extras’ • Have unique features to improve operating efficiency & ergonomics • Require minimal site preparation • Are quick & simple to deploy on standard container trucks To make installation even easier, they can also be pre-configured with Datwyler copper & fibre cabling products, so you’re up and running straight away. iDaC’s containerised MDC’s are ideal for network expansion (if you don’t have room or planning consent for a permanent building), disaster recovery, refurbishments or as a stand-alone Data Centre. They can also be re-located easily, so your investment is protected as they can be re-used or moved to another site if required. Whatever your application and whatever space you have, we can design a tailor-made solution to meet your needs. We provide 3D modelling services, to ensure every detail is designed and executed to your specific requirements; as well as access to the factory webcam, so you can watch your MDC being built from the comfort of your own desk. • mains to-and-from generator, • generator to-and-from generator, • mains to-and-from mains. Data Centres often have multiple separate loads and multiple power sources because they have critical business needs for maintaining an uninterrupted supply. The DSE335 has been designed to handle the most complex multi-source, multi-load application. In a recent Data Centre project, DSE335 modules were chosen for a multi-load system with two mains supplies. Each one of the modules monitored a separate load along with both power sources and were linked, via RS485 and digital inputs and outputs, to an external common PLC. The control modules communicate load activity and mains status to the PLC. In the event of a power failure, the PLC will determine which load should be switched and will issue a command to the relevant DSE335. The module then handles all aspects of the transfer, with an automatic no-break return when power is resumed. DSE modules are designed & manufactured in the UK and provide a high quality, reliable solution that has made them the number one choice around the world. Other DSE ATS control modules are available.
