Working as a dentist or dental care professional, I’m sure you have days where you ache from being bent over a patient during a particularly long or intense procedure. While you are focused only on providing your patient with the best dental care, you neglect your own health and probably finish some days feeling like you’ve been in a boxing ring!

are close at hand and can be reached with minimum effort. You’ll work faster, more efficiently and with less effort, hopefully reducing your risk of long term injury.
You should try this for yourself at an A-dec showroom or at either the dbg stand (K45) or A-dec stand (P30) at the Dentistry Show). Make sure both dentist and DCP attend together to see the benefit, and prepare to be amazed! And don’t worry if you’re not in the market for a chair right now, have a “test drive” and bear us in mind for the future.
A-dec chair and equipment designs are developed and tested in enormous detail to ensure you and your patient are both in the most suitable position for comfort and your long term health. Without even realising it, your A-dec system is encouraging you to sit correctly, hold your instruments in a way that will prevent long term strain injuries and bend over less, avoiding strain on your back.

Continued from page 1... That’s why we recommend annual chair maintenance, but also why, in the case of breakdown, we guarantee your repair will be completed within 48 hours (and we usually repair within 24 hours but some circumstances mean we can’t guarantee this for every case). dbg’s nationwide team of engineers means that there is always someone in your local area who can be with you the same day (or if you call us in the afternoon, the next day). A-dec chairs are designed to work for 20 years, and in many cases exceed this, so whilst you might find the initial outlay maybe greater than some offerings in the market-place, in the long term you can rely on considerable savings on repairs, maintenance and because of the quality of the chair, reduced downtime due to breakdown Employ the old adage – buy cheap, buy twice! You’ll probably have to invest in two cheaper dental chairs to outlast an A-dec. And don’t worry that you’ll get bored of your lime green, it can be reupholstered as often as you like.
Test Drive A-dec Today! Visit either the dbg or A-dec stand at the Dentistry Show and have a go on our hot pink chairs, a new colour for 2013. We will never try to sell to you, we just want you to give A-dec a try and prepare to be amazed!
GDC recruits panel members for public protection role Chair of the General Dental Council, Kevin O’Brien, explains the importance of being a Fitness to Practise panellist at the GDC. In February this year (2013) the General Dental Council (GDC) will be advertising for 65 new Fitness to Practise (FtP) panel members to help in its public protection role. I’d like to explain a little bit about the role and why it’s so important to our work. Fitness to Practise panel members play a critical role in the GDC’s work to protect patients. The GDC has the power to take action by either removing or restricting a dental professional’s registration if they fall short of the high standards expected. The panel members will sit in public hearings and can consider cases where a registrant’s fitness to practise may be impaired due to their health, conduct or performance, as well as applications for restoration to the registers and appeals against registration decisions. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in our work and we are seeking exceptional individuals from three key areas: dentists; dental care professionals (which includes dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists) and lay panel members, from the broader general public. (We are looking for 15 dentists, 25 DCPs and 25 lay members).
This is a great learning and development opportunity for both lay people and dental professionals who are interested in the proportionate and fair regulation of the dental profession, and also a challenging and interesting role which makes a difference for both the public and dental professionals. A number of existing members have shared their experiences of going through the application process and of being panellists. You can read these here: http:// www.gdc-uk.org/Aboutus/Workingforus/Pages/FTPpanel-case-studies.aspx. Whatever your background and experience, we are seeking outstanding communicators, with excellent analytical skills and judgement and strong team players. These roles are highly challenging, cover difficult and highly sensitive topics, and will test your ability to make reasoned decisions against a range of conflicting factors. The work of Fitness to Practise panel members is demanding, but rewarding and operates at the heart of what we do. We are looking for individuals of ability, who are passionate about the contribution we make to improving patient protection and healthcare services, who understand the far-reaching effect that our work can have and who approach their work with integrity and objectivity.

Don’t Get Left Behind!
Up-to-date Education at The Dentistry Show 2013 With the modern dental industry evolving at such a fast pace, it is essential that all dental professionals remain abreast of the latest developments in order to provide the very best standard of service to all their patients. The Dentistry Show is now a well-established event, and is committed to presenting the newest ideas, techniques and equipment in the UK. The Dentistry Show is the first major dental event of the year in the UK, and the only one taking place in the Midlands during an 18 month period, it will host a line-up of top-quality speakers, with more than 65 hours of verifiable CPD available through traditional lectures, live surgeries and hands-on workshops.
Dentistry Show 2013, and what delegates attending his lecture can expect.
The conferences will be split into six separate streams, each catering to the needs of a specific area of the profession. The “Aesthetic Dentist” conference is no exception, with globally recognised lecturers covering all the major clinical procedures and technology for the modern dentist. Dr Maurice Salama will be amongst these, speaking on “A Defined Algorithm for Implant Success in the Aesthetic Zone”.
“I hope delegates attending my lecture take away a developed understanding of the proper sequence of therapy and diagnosis, which optimises the treatment and ensures the very best results are achieved for the patient. I also aim to cement delegates’ knowledge of concepts related to implant technology and new regenerate therapies available to patients, which may not be so widely known about.
ALAMA MAURICE S
Dr Salama received his Degree in Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he later achieved a duel certification in Orthodontics and Periodontics. Dr Salama went on to complete further specialised training in Orthodontics, Periodontal Surgery and Implant Dentistry through various prestigious organisations and Universities. As a result, he is a frequent author of dental literature and a sought-after lecturer around the world. Dr Salama discusses what he will be speaking about at The
“My lecture will cover reconstructive dentistry, focusing on multidisciplinary and aesthetic approaches to tooth replacement and total rehabilitation of the mouth,” he says. “I will be discussing regenerate technologies and techniques, related both to bone and soft tissue augmentation, as well as effective implant replacement for missing teeth. “I will predominantly be using case studies and reviews of pertinent literature and research to support my cases and explain why I managed them as I did. Going into detail of both old techniques and new, I hope to explore the sequence of therapy and discuss what to implement at each stage.
“Regardless of professional background or how far they have progressed in their careers, all delegates will benefit from my lecture. If anyone would like to do some research on the topic before the Show, a visit to www.dentalxp.com will give more information.” Having been very heavily involved in the education and training aspect of the dental industries around the world, Dr Salama is keen to stress the importance of frequent re-training. “I think that today the education process is very quick. Training is now readily available online as well as through
traditional methods, and a variety of resources are now very wide-spread. Education today is the most accessible it has ever been in the dental profession, and it is now the individual’s desire to learn that drives personal development.” In addition to the conferences, The Dentistry Show 2013 will also present an extensive trade floor, with more than 350 quality exhibitors expected to attend. “I always believe it is beneficial for professionals to access the trade directly,” says Dr Salama. “I think it is important for professionals to understand where the development of new technologies has come from, which is particularly effective with the opportunity to interact directly with the manufacturers. Dentistry is evolving very quickly at the moment, and it is very useful for delegates to discover what the new up-coming interests are and which areas of the profession are currently advancing. Recent developments such as optical scanning, cone beam technology and bioactive modifiers have all changed the profession for the better, and it is important to be prepared for what might come next. “This is a really unique time in dentistry. Many of the now popular techniques and equipment weren’t even known about or available as little as 10 years ago, so it is essential that dental professionals keep as up-to-date with the industry as possible.”
See Maurice Salama speaking on Friday 1st March in the Aesthetic Dentist Theatre.

“Aesthetic Dentist” Conference Speaker Dr Ron Jackson The organisers of The Dentistry Show make it their mission every year to present internationally renowned speakers at the very forefront of their fields. Among the esteemed speakers in 2013 will be Dr. Ronald Jackson from the USA. Dr. Jackson has published many articles on aesthetic adhesive dentistry and lectures extensively across the United States and abroad. He is an Accredited Fellow in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, on Ron Jacks a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a Diplomate in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry, Director of the Mastering Dynamic Adhesion course at the Las Vegas Institute and practices comprehensive dentistry in Middleburg, Virginia. Dr Jackson will be giving a lecture entitled “Posterior Composites: A practical, efficient technique”, as part of the “Aesthetic Dentist” Conference programme. “Because of their natural appearance, posterior composite restorations are preferred by many patients over traditional amalgam fillings,” says Dr. Jackson. “The problem is that dentists find placing posterior composite restorations tedious and time consuming and they are therefore necessarily more costly. If corners are cut or if the process is rushed in any way, poor results can be produced.
“Recently, new materials and technologies have been developed and introduced to the dental industry, that allow practitioners to place these restorations faster and easier without compromising quality. “I will be discussing these new materials, focusing particularly on a new ‘bulk fill’ composite that uses sonic energy to activate and doesn’t require a low viscosity liner or adaptation by hand and light curing of several layers of composite. The high frequency vibration created by the handpiece instantly lowers the viscosity of the highly filled composite, adapting it intimately to the cavity walls and rapidly filling the cavity in seconds. Upon deactivation of the handpiece, the composite resin materials returns more slowly to the high viscosity state thereby allowing the dentist to quickly and easily sculpt the non-sticky material to accurate anatomy.
As well as providing the six separate conference streams, The Dentistry Show 2013 will also present an extensive trade exhibition, expected to host more than 350 topquality companies. In addition to increased networking opportunities, the exhibition also provides delegates with access to all the newest equipment and technology in the industry, with the extra benefit of being able to speak directly to the manufacturers and suppliers for help and advice. “I think the combination of the conferences and the trade show is absolutely to delegates’ advantage, as they can learn about a new technology in the lecture, and then walk into the exhibition and apply what they have learnt immediately,” says Dr Jackson. “I’ve heard good things about The Dentistry Show, and I look forward to my first experience as a speaker there in March.”
“Through my lecture, I will be providing practical tips and advice on how to achieve the best results with these new materials and technologies. It is important that awareness increases of what I consider to be ‘break-through’ technology in the world of posterior composites, which benefit both the patient and the dentist alike.
The event will also takes place just before the end of the current five-year CPD cycle for more than 40,000 dental professionals – who must have logged the required number of both verifiable ad non-verifiable CPD hours by the 31st July 2013.
“Although ‘bulk-fill’ materials and technologies are relatively new to the dental industry, both in vitro and in vivo research is now being published showing the efficacy of these techniques. In addition, early adopting dentists have reported great success.”

“A Healthy Business” with Sheila Scott
Amongst the line-up of world-class speakers will be Sheila Scott, a highly experienced business consultant. With a Masters in Psychology, a Diploma in Marketing and Certificates in Counselling and Training, she knows how to help people achieve beyond expectations. As a keen lecturer, Sheila has attended The Dentistry Show in the past and looks forward to her return. “I have presented at the event twice in the past, running both a workshop and a traditional lecture” says Sheila. “It was a highly energetic Show both times, with a real ‘buzz’ in the atmosphere. Despite offering such a combination of lectures, workshops and trade, it was still designed so that it was easy to see everything. The conferences were also very focused on each area of the profession, OTT with very well attended SHEILA SC lectures over both days, so I am more than happy to return to speak in 2013!” Sheila will be giving a lecture entitled “Dentistry: A Healthy Business” in the Dental Business Conference, which is designed to give practice managers and owners the support they need to run successful businesses. Particularly important with the economy in the state that it is, the various speakers will cover a range of current issues and practical solutions to help practices stay ahead of the game. “I will be talking about what dental practices have to focus on to get the right messages to patients,” Sheila explains. “To run a successful business, the services offered must be what the customer wants. Similarly, a dental practice must provide the treatment and care that patients desire, in order to gain their custom and encourage them to return in the future.
“It is important that all practices understand what patients want, and then analyse the services they offer to ensure they provide it. For example, if Cadbury believed that the whole world loved chilli chocolate then they would add chilli to all dairy milk bars. However, this wouldn’t sell as much as the plain dairy milk would, because the chilli flavour would only appeal to a niche market. Most practices need the dairy milk equivalent for dentistry – if they need to appeal to a wide range of people in order to attract as many patients as possible.” Sheila also believes that the language practices and dental professionals use can contribute to whether patients perceive value in the service they receive.
“From my talk, I hope to increase delegates’ awareness of how important it is to work towards and deliver good dental health to patients. This then makes it a lot easier for patients to be interested in further dental treatment, sustaining the practice as a business.” With the trade floor expected to exhibit more than 350 quality manufacturers and suppliers, The Dentistry Show will demonstrate the latest innovations, trends and technology in the profession. Delegates will get the opportunity to not only speak to the experts directly, but also network with people in all areas of the industry, expanding their contacts in ways they otherwise may not have bee able to.
“The language used can be really important in how practices capture the hearts and minds of patients. Patients have to understand what they are getting from the practice and why the care provided really matters. This is often what helps patients trust in their dentist’s recommendations and decide whether to go ahead with their dentist’s advice. Practices need to look at how they interact with patients and check they are getting a positive response. Then there are implications for language used when marketing the practice, so that patients are left in no doubt as to why they need to visit this practice in particular.
“I think the combination of the lectures with the trade is a stroke of genius at The Dentistry Show,” says Sheila. “The design makes everything easily accessible to delegates, and it is particularly useful for practice managers and owners to learn about the latest equipment in the industry.”
“In my lecture I will be focusing on the key experiences that impress patients, and how dental professionals can go about delivering fantastic value every time. Having worked with thousands of practices in the last few years, I have seen how it works. I know what patients want and I am hoping to help delegates at The Dentistry Show implement the changes necessary to meet those demands.

Combating Offshore Threats with Pam Johnson
The Aesthetic Technician Conference is designed for technicians, CDTs and laboratory owners, exploring both new techniques and offering practical advice and solutions to the problems faced in the current economy. One of the many anticipated speakers within this conference is Pam Johnson, Editor-in-Chief of AEGIS Communications’ Inside Dental Technology, in the US. As dental events in the US tend to separate dentists and their immediate teams with the dental technology side of the industry, Pam is looking forward to experiencing how combined events work.
SON PAM JOHN
“I am really excited about it because it is a full team show, and we really don’t have one of those here in the US. The Dentistry Show 2013 has particular interest for me, to see how it is organised and what level of interest it attracts from all areas of the profession. I will be attending as many other lectures as possible, absorbing as much of the event as I can!”
Pam’s lecture at the next Show will be entitled “Combating Offshore Threats.” As a frequent speaker on this topic, Pam will be looking at how the US dental laboratory profession encountered large decreases in market share due to the joint impact of low cost offshore substitutes and a fraught national economy. Delegates will get to see the challenges that US laboratories faced, what they adjusted to suit the current climate and how they recovered. “Talking about the conditions here in the US, and the laboratory industry as it is today, the challenges that our industry is facing are parallel in some part to what is happening in Britain,” explains Pam. “In particular I will be discussing offshore production and how it has impacted our industry.
Nearly 40% of the indirect restorations being made in the US are now coming from offshore. The offshore market is cutting dramatically into the bread-and-butter of our laboratory industry’s production – the posterior crown. “To combat this problem, labs have reinvented themselves. Some have entered into the price war or high volume production arena – they cannot beat the price of an offshore restoration but with sophisticated automated production they can deliver a larger volume of product much quicker. This is possible with the advent of new materials and CAD/ CAM technology, as these enable local labs to mill full-contour lithium disilicate and zirconia crowns for precision fit, with competitive pricing and a fast turn-around. Other laboratories have decided to abandon the price sensitive segment of the market completely and concentrate their business strategy on high end and complex niche segments of dentistry, such as implants. Others have stepped up their focus on customer service, finding profitability in offering highly personal consultant services to dentists. There are a variety of different business models that are popping up here in the US, and I think some of these could be hugely beneficial to dental labs in the UK. I hope to show delegates all their options, and I will use real case studies to show how others implemented these business models successfully to fight off the offshore threat.” In order to offer a rich and varied learning experience, The Dentistry Show presents an extensive trade floor in conjunction with the lectures. This provides delegates with an opportunity to discover the latest pieces of equipment and technology in the industry, with direct interaction with the experts who developed them.
“Having the trade so close to the lectures is absolutely beneficial for delegates, and in particular for dental technicians. While the exhibition displays the new technology technicians may be using, they benefit greatly from the clinical education, helping them to speak to their clients on a more clinical level rather than just technical. Technicians need this aspect so they can offer a better service to their dentists. “I think the communication between technicians and dentists can be a huge problem. Both generally tend to be introverted individuals, working quite independently. It’s great for technicians to get away from the bench and to hone those skills that allow them to communicate with dentists on a much higher professional level. Improved understanding between the dentist and technician will not only enhance the standard of work produced, but will enable technicians to provide a much better service to clients.” For your chance to learn new skills, gain new perspectives and advance in your career, don’t miss the Dentistry Show 2013.

Be Empowered at The Dentistry Show 2013 Marama Millar, owner of The Dental Nursing Network
Aside from delivering quality education and bringing delegates completely up-to-speed with the latest techniques, ideas and equipment in the industry, The Dentistry Show is also a great source of inspiration. The next event will be held on 1st and 2nd March 2013, at the NEC in Birmingham. The conferences will be split into the six different areas of the profession, with worldclass speakers covering all relevant issues and topics to each field of dentistry. Every speaker in the Dental Nurses Forum will be discussing how they advanced in their careers from dental MarS Millar nurses into various different avenues, showing delegates all their potential options for the future. Marama Millar, owner of The Dental Nursing Network, will be speaking at the event for the first time, after having attended as a delegate several times in the past. “I really enjoyed The Dentistry Show in previous years, finding the business conference particularly useful,” says Marama. “I was impressed by the quality and content of the lectures, and also found the event to be a great place to network.” With an extensive trade floor presented alongside the conferences, The Dentistry Show enables delegates to meet professionals they otherwise may never have encountered. The sheer number of leading experts in attendance also provides an opportunity for delegates to learn from the very forefront and cutting-edge of the profession.
“I think the trade show is great for delegates to find out what is happening across the UK dental market, and not just in their own field. Having access to the latest technology and innovations in the industry can help open their minds to what is actually out there.” In 2013, Marama will be encouraging visitors to the Dental Nurses Forum to “Be Inspired, Be Empowered”, and hopes to open delegate’s minds even further to all the possibilities available to them. “I will be discussing how I advanced from dental nursing to becoming a business owner,” she explains. “I hope by sharing my personal experience I will inspire delegates to actively develop their careers, and really achieve their long-term goals. “Through my lecture, I will emphasise the importance of being open-minded and show how much delegates’ attitude can affect their careers. I believe curiosity is a fantastic tool, and especially for dental nurses, it can be the key to deciding what they want to next. “For example, if a nurse is interested in how the practice is organised, then they should be proactive and speak to their practice manager in order to understand the day-to-day running of the practice. Whichever area is attractive, dental nurses should take the initiative to get as much information as possible. Even if they don’t end up advancing in that area, the knowledge and skills they learn may prove invaluable in the future.”
Dentistry Show, encouraging delegates to really think about their current situations and how they want to move forward. In order to enjoy a successful career in the industry however, dental nurses need to make sure they meet the CPD requirements and maintain GDC registration. Over the course of the two days, The Dentistry Show’s Dental Nurses Forum will offer up to 9 hours of verifiable CPD, helping dental nurses to meet the GDC requirements. By 31st July 2013, all DCPs must have logged at least 150 hours of CPD, with a minimum of 50 hours verified. Marama understands how difficult it can be to accumulate CPD hours when working in a busy practice, but she encourages dental nurses to take every chance they get. “I have met many dental nurses who are yet to log their full amount of CPD, and some are quite behind despite it being so late in the current cycle,” says Marama. “The Dentistry Show presents a great opportunity to top-up CPD hours while really getting to grips with the modern industry.”

What should a Dentist look for in a Dental Laboratory? It’s an interesting question – and no doubt each dentist will have his or her own sense of what’s important to them when selecting a dental lab, but let’s begin with some elements that fall into the ‘absolute must’ category:• Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MRHA) Registration – it’s a legal requirement that any dental lab operating in the UK must be registered with MHRA. • A requirement of MHRA is compliance by Labs with the Medical Devices Directive (MDD) and the Medical Devices Regulations (MDR) – and so this again will fall into the ‘absolute must’ category for any Dentist selecting a Lab. •
General Dental Council (GDC) Registration – again it’s a legal requirement for dental technicians to be registered with the GDC, preferably the owner of the Lab.
Any dental lab that fails to meet these requirements is unlikely to be selected by any dentist not least because they’re operating outside of the law!
Beyond these essential requirements most dentists should also expect some or all of the following:-
somewhere abroad, where inevitably language problems may arise.
•
And of course let’s not forget – the work must be of a good quality and competitively priced. A quality system such IS9002 or DAMAS is also worth looking for.
Production of a Lab Ticket for each item of work undertaken – this goes some way towards providing evidence of Conformity Assessment Procedures, with a copy being provided to both the patient and the Dentist.
Other than all of this, it’s pretty straightforward…….
• Evidence that adequate audit trail procedures operate within the lab in relation to the manufacturing process, materials used etc. – crucial in the event of problems arising with a patient e.g. an allergic reaction, at some point in the future. •
Adequate Professional Indemnity and Products Liability insurance.
Other less tangible aspects will of course come into the selection process – such as reputation within the profession; areas of specialist expertise; and convenience and proximity for the resolution of problems – it’s much easier for the dentists (and sometimes the patient) if the lab is located close by or at least within the UK as opposed to
Speak to DLA or DTA on the Professional Hub for advice about ensuring the dental lab you choose produces quality work.
British Bite Mark
The DLA launched the British Bite Mark in 2012 to help dentists at a glance recognise the dental laboratories who manufacture dental appliances in the UK. Dental laboratory’s operating in the UK comply with strict regulations in terms of materials used, they also have to employ dental technicians that are registered with the General Dental Council. This level of regulation is in place to protect the patient. British Bite Mark registered dental labs exhibiting at The Dentistry Show this year include: Ambridge Ceramics – Stand P26

Education is the key The Dentistry Show 2013, 1st and 2nd March at the NEC Birmingham, will offer an entire conference stream dedicated to technicians and lab owners. World-class speakers will deliver up to 11 hours of vCPD through lectures, workshops and live demonstrations, and the trade exhibition will display all the newest innovations in dentistry.
inson Gary Jenk
Gary Jenkinson, Manager of the 1st Dental laboratory in Sheffield, believes education is the key to success in this difficult economic climate. He will be attending the next event with his team of technicians to source the latest ideas and technology
