END OF CPD CYCLE FAST APPROACHING ARE YOU UP-TO-DATE?

As all dental professionals know, the more the dental industry evolves, the more important CPD becomes. New techniques, equipment and ideas are constantly introduced into all areas of the profession, and it is essential that practitioners remain abreast of the latest developments in order to offer the best possible service to their patients.

MORE FOR THE TEAM

Split into verifiable and non-verifiable CPD, all dental professionals are obligated to continue their education and training throughout their careers. The General Dental Council (GDC) strongly recommends three main areas for verifiable CPD – medical emergencies, disinfection and decontamination and radiography and radiation protection. Other topics recommended for either verifiable or non-verifiable CPD include legal and ethical issues, complaints handling and oral cancer, improving early detection. While these are the most important areas to keep up-to-date in, there are always new techniques and equipment to study in order for practitioners to expand their knowledge, understanding and skills. This practice not only enables all dental professionals to develop their careers, but also ensure the service provided to patients is of the highest possible standard. As the GDC states: “Patients are right to expect that all members of the dental team are keeping their skills and knowledge up to date throughout their careers. We ensure this is happening by making continuing professional development a requirement of all dental professionals’ registration with us.” On 31st July 2013, more than 40,000 dental professionals will reach the end of their five-year CPD cycle. By that time, all affected dentists are required to have logged over 250 hours of CPD, with 75 verifiable hours. Similarly, DCPs are required to log 150 hours of CPD including 50 verifiable hours, before the cut-off date. According to the GDC’s latest figures, 11% of DCPs and 23% of dental technicians registered in the UK have not yet logged any CPD hours at all. For all professionals contributing to these statistics, time is running out to meet the deadline and log the required number of CPD hours.

There are many different ways to complete both verifiable and non-verifiable CPD, but the efficiency of each method can vary greatly depending on individual preferences. There are a huge number of training courses, online learning programmes and dental conferences that provide CPD, and it has long been recognised that a mixture of learning techniques is usually the most effective. For many practitioners, attending dental conferences and events are a particularly useful way of adding to their CPD, as these present an opportunity to expand their professional network at the same time. While some events of course only cater for specific professional roles, others are designed to offer first-class education to all members of the dental team, from dentists and practice owners, to practice managers, treatment coordinators and dental technicians. The best of these events will also include a trade floor, where a wide range of suppliers and manufactures will be on display, demonstrating the latest innovations in the industry. Designed to cater for All That Dentistry Demands, The Dentistry Show provides up to 70 hours of completely free, verifiable CPD for all members of the dental team. The six different conference streams – “Aesthetic Dentist”, “Aesthetic Technician”, “Dental Nurses Forum”, “Dental Business”, “Hygienist & Therapist” and “Dentistry Today” – present internationally renowned speakers running lectures alongside hands-on workshops and live surgeries that provide an enriched learning experience to all delegates. As the only major dental event in the Midlands before the end of this five-year CPD cycle, it is the perfect opportunity to top up your hours and meet the requirements for continued GDC registration. continues on page 2

continued from page 1 Mrs Clare Gouldsmith is the Dental Hygiene Advisor and Treatment Coordinator at Beaufort Dental Health Centre in Staffordshire, and she and her team have attended The Dentistry Show many times. “The Dentistry Show provides a great opportunity for all members of our dental team to attend the same event and have access to a range of seminars relevant to each professional. The event is highly convenient for vCPD in particular as we can choose which specific lectures or workshops to attend, and it is easy for everyone to collect the CPD certificates at the end of the Show.” Many other delegates at the 2012 Show also attended to make the most of the free CPD available. David Roberts from Tan Graig Dental Practice said, “It’s an excellent show with a good combination of CPD seminars that you actually want to attend.” Morteza Jaffari from Annie House Dental Clinic also said “This is a very different from others in the industry. I come every year to see all the new products and some great speakers while earning CPD points.” If you have not yet logged enough CPD hours for the current five-year cycle, then now is the time to organise and make sure you meet the July deadline. Whether that involves booking training courses, enrolling in online education programmes or registering for a dental conference, do it soon before it’s too late!

EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES FOR DENTAL TECHNICIANS The Dentistry Show has evolved and grown over recent years, and has become an important event on the dental calendar. The 2012 show attracted well over 5000 dental professionals, all looking to develop their knowledge and skills in their specific fields. The show featured six different conference streams showcasing first-class speakers from around the world, discussing and demonstrating all the latest equipment, techniques and ideas in the industry. An extensive trade exhibition was also presented, displaying JOHN more than 320 ALEX LITTLE companies, enabling delegates to try out new technologies first-hand, and communicate directly with the expert technicians at each stand. The organisers of the show are working hard to produce the best event yet in 2013, and they are pleased to reveal that Alex Littlejohn will be the Chairman of the Aesthetic Technician Conference. Alex is currently the Managing Director of family business DTS (Dental Technology Services) in Glasgow, Scotland, where he has worked for many years, and is also a fully qualified post-graduate lecturer. In 1984, Alex founded the TEREC Group – a group of 10 like-minded UK dental laboratories, which introduce new techniques to the UK, from around the world. A sister group was also established in North America with 12 laboratories. He has also previously been Chairman of the Dental Laboratories Association for 4 years.

factor for good patient care. In the past, the relationship between the two members of the dental team has been under appreciated, but increasingly dentists have come to recognise that working together efficiently can benefit everyone. Effective communication enables the technician to produce work to meet the exact requirements, providing the patient with the best possible service.” Alex also believes that new techniques and materials should be introduced into the NHS. “I think there is a reluctance from the professional bodies to accept new techniques into the NHS –still relying on techniques and materials that have been superseded. With gold prices rocketing, and with various other materials and techniques well proven, it is now time that these environmentally friendly and more aesthetic materials be more available to the public at large. Without the involvement of the NHS, the average person on the street does not have access to these innovative restorations.” As well as inspirational and thought-provoking lectures, The Dentistry Show also runs hands-on workshops, interactive seminars and the Live Theatre, where leading

Being a part of both TEREC Groups has enabled me to remain at the forefront of the profession, as I have access to the very latest developments around the world.” Looking forward to the next show, Alex discusses what delegates can expect from the Aesthetic Technician Conference 2013. “I have attended The Dentistry Show in the past, and even lectured there a couple of years ago. It is certainly an important event for dental technicians to attend, as it shows them exactly how many opportunities there are in the profession. The show also enables professionals to learn of the latest innovations in dentistry. “For the next show, I aim to present lectures that will demonstrate the very cutting-edge of the profession, exploring the latest technologies and pioneering techniques. The speakers will include those at the forefront of digital dentistry, as this is a greatly influential aspect of dental lab work. In such a digital age, there will be a huge focus on this throughout the 2013 conference, looking at new digital techniques for producing crowns, bridges and implants.” With the dental industry evolving at such a fast rate, digital technology is an essential element to the work completed by dental technicians. Innovative technologies allow technicians to maximise their skills, and produce work to the very highest standard. Communication is another key topic Alex hopes to look at during the Aesthetic Technician Conference. “As I have often said in post-graduate lectures, the communication between the dentist and the technician can be a critical

professionals give live demonstrations of certain procedures. The combination of learning experiences serves to enrich delegates’ time at the show, and provide everything they need to ensure the success of their business. The Dentistry Show 2013 will be held on 1st and 2nd March, in Hall 4, of the NEC in Birmingham. With an even larger number of delegates and exhibitors expected than before, it really does promise to be a highlight of the dental year. Make sure you don’t miss your chance to experience Alex Littlejohn’s Aesthetic Technician Conference, and save the date in your diary today.

THE DENTISTRY SHOW: ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LEVEL Stephen Lander is a skilled dental technician and the owner of the award-winning Stephen Lander Dental Designs in west Lancashire, specialising in aesthetic and implant dentistry. Offering consultations with both dentists and patients, Stephen’s attention to detail and state-of-the-art dental restorations ensure exceptional results. I first went to The Dentistry Show in 2011. A number of technicians and dentists whose opinions I respect had told me it was an excellent show and I wanted to further enhance our reputation nationwide, so I decided to take a stand.

and senior technicians who were coming along together, which is a good sign. If you’re going to take time out as a business owner, that’s one thing, but if you’re going to take technicians off the bench as well, you’ve really got to believe that what you’re doing is worthwhile.

Prior to this, I had only exhibited at one other show and I have to say The Dentistry Show was on a completely different level. It was a lot more professional, the support we received was superb and it started from the day I signed up, explaining what we were likely to need and giving examples of how to do it. We were also approached by supply companies who advised us on furniture and lighting for the stand. It really was made simple, especially for someone with little experience of exhibiting.

My team and I rotated manning the stand, taking a look around and speaking to other exhibitors and delegates. The show was excellent for delegates, well set out and the standard, amount and diversity of exhibitors was superb. I found it very useful going round the exhibition, both for the technical and clinical aspects, and I brought quite a lot of information back with me.

I didn’t have a lot of knowledge on how to dress the stand but I have to be honest, it looked outstanding and we received a lot of compliments during the exhibition. The stand got a lot of ‘traffic’ and I was pleased with the exposure and response we had both during and after the exhibition. My colleagues and I were impressed with the amount of technicians that were exhibiting and attending and the fact there were lectures specifically for technicians. My staff attended some of the lectures and got a lot out of them. Technicians usually find that shows are heavily weighted in favour of the surgeons, but I think the clinical/surgical mix of The Dentistry Show was a big reason why it was so well attended. There seemed to be quite a few practice teams attending together, as well as individuals. I knew laboratory owners

Keeping up-to-date in this way helps our business enormously. For me, you need to be current with the latest trends and innovations in our industry, but also need to know what the restorative dentists and dental suppliers are doing. I don’t think you can develop as a laboratory at the top end if you don’t know what the current trends are in clinical dentistry. Often, you’ll find something that one or two of your clients don’t know about, so you can send them a sample or have a chat about a new method or product. I can help my clients find out about new things, and to maybe try something different, so that adds another string to my bow. If I can be the person that informs my clients about the latest technique or product our working relationship is stronger for it. The most important benefit from attending The Dentistry Show is the opportunity to rub shoulders with likeminded people. There are a lot of dental technicians and

dentists who don’t go beyond their own four walls, but there are other people who do venture out to learn and improve. They are the ones who want to develop not only themselves but also their businesses. It’s great to be amongst those people, talking to them and sharing ideas. That’s what I love about good exhibitions and why I’m looking forward to the next Dentistry Show. I’m particularly pleased that the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA) is supporting the 2013 event. It’s good to see The Dentistry Show is committed to developing its already strong laboratory content and programme for lab owners, technicians and now CDTs.

IMMEDIATE IMPLANT PLACEMENT DR STEFAN PAUL AT THE DENTISTRY SHOW 2013

As the fastest growing dental show in the UK, The Dentistry Show has become a well-established event on the dental calendar. Catering for All That Dentistry Demands, some of the professionals at the very forefront of their fields give lectures and run workshops to help delegates develop their knowledge and skills and advance in their careers.

PAUL DR STEFAN

both nationally and internationally.

From Switzerland, Dr Stefan Paul graduated from the University of Freiburg in Germany in 1985, and then completed postgraduate training in Operative Dentistry, P e r i o d o n t o l o g y, Fixed Prosthodontics and Implantology. Amongst many other qualifications and achievements, Dr Paul has been lecturing fellow professionals since 1992 and has become a widely recognised speaker

Dr Paul will be giving a lecture on “Immediate Implant Placement: Treatment at risk or taking aesthetic advantage?” as part of the Aesthetic Dentist Conference in 2013. He has extensive experience in Implantology as well as Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry, and is keen to encourage the growth of immediate implant placement amongst dental professionals.

There are many benefits to using immediate implant placement opposed to the normal implant approach, and Dr Paul believes more practitioners would use this method if they were more confident in their technique. “This treatment method enables me to extract the broken tooth, and insert an implant and a fixed temporary crown, all within a couple of hours. A patient can literally walk into the practice with a problem, and walk out again with a full and natural-feeling smile. “This type of implant placement also encourages the soft tissue to heal a lot quicker than normal implants. It enhances both the white and pink aesthetics of the smile, and restores a very natural-looking smile. Add this to the shorter treatment time and lower cost of a singular appointment, this technique can greatly increases patient satisfaction. “As with any treatment, there are of course also risks to immediate implant placement. I will make it a focus of my lecture to help practitioners minimise these risks as much as possible, and ensure the technique they use is safe and successful for the patient. “If the technique is performed incorrectly, or the patient is not properly informed, load on the new implant can cause it to move and loosen, and so result in unnecessary pain or other problems for the patient. I will be giving a stepby-step explanation with details of the correct technique during my lecture at The Dentistry Show, discussing all the possible indications and contra-indications and how to

“Immediate implant placement is already increasing in popularity worldwide, because it is such an effective procedure when carried out correctly. If a patient comes to me with a missing or broken front tooth after an accident, this not only affects the aesthetics of the smile, but also the way the patient eats and speaks. Traditional treatment in

this case would be to provide temporary dentures while the implant settles, but these can move around a lot and cause great discomfort and embarrassment.”

approach these in different situations.” Even if the technique is perfected, there are still other factors that can affect the success of treatment. Patient compliance can be a major aspect, and Dr Paul emphasises just how important it is that all patients are properly informed. “Patient education really is the key. Every time I perform immediate implant placement on a patient, I make it a priority to ensure they fully understand what they have to do with regards to non-functional loading, to enable the success of the treatment. For example, while I can reduce the height of the temporary restoration so that it does not meet the opposite teeth regardless of the position of the jaw, it is down to the patient to not put pressure on the implant when eating. As the treatment causes very little pain or swelling, I often find that patients are very quick to forget about not biting down on the temporary restoration, so I really do have to remind them at every single given opportunity!” The Dentistry Show 2013 will be held on 1st and 2nd March 2013 at the NEC in Birmingham. Over 70 hours of verifiable CPD will be available over the two days, with a line-up of world-class speakers, live surgeries and handson workshops to enhance the learning experience for all delegates. The extensive trade floor is also set to present over 300 exhibitors, demonstrating all the latest technologies and innovations in the modern UK dental industry. INNOVATION WITH A LEGACY Philips will be attending the Dentistry Show in 2013 for the first time and two of its key opinion leaders will be offering CPD lectures in the PerioLounge sessions; during the Friday session Ian Peace, Specialist Periodontist will be addressing delegates and he will be complemented on the Saturday by Matthew Perkins also a Registered Specialist in Periodontology, immediately after the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) keynote lectures on both conference days. To highlight the positive opportunities toothwhitening presents for dental professionals following EU regulation changes Philips will also be running four workshops. Whilst on their show stand they will be demonstrating the most recent home whitening innovation Zoom DayWhite 6% which builds on the Zoom legacy and differs significantly from any other home whitening system available because it contains Amorphous Calcium Phosphate. ACP combines with fluoride and bonds with the enamel to provide advanced protection, improved luster and shine, and reduced sensitivity, compared with teeth whitened without ACP.1 Crucially, Zoom DayWhite 6% is compliant with the new EU regulations preventing the sale of whitening products containing more than six percent hydrogen peroxide. Also compliant is Zoom NiteWhite containing 10% and 16% carbamide peroxide as the 10% is equivalent to 3.5% hydrogen-peroxide and 16% is equivalent to 5.8% hydrogen-peroxide. As well as at-home whitening delegates will find the latest Zoom Tooth Whitening Pen which allows convenient whitening-on-the-go whenever and where ever users want to top up their home whitened smiles. 5.25% hydrogenperoxide gel extrudes through a brush by simply clicking on the top of the pen-like dispenser after which the user simply coats each tooth by painting on the clear, timereleased formula which dries almost instantly on the teeth leaving a cool minty taste. This will be coupled with a debut exhibition presence for Philips’ oral healthcare portfolio. On show will be Philips‘ award winning Sonicare DiamondClean - a stunning electronic tour-de-force which builds on a proven 20 year heritage of sonic toothbrush

innovation. The brush is as clinically advanced as it is cutting edge and proven to whiten teeth and improve periodontal health in a week.2 Its induction charging technology allows the brush to be charged via a drinking tumbler or conveniently using a USB computer port. Delegates can also get their hands on the multi award winning and British Dental Health Foundation accredited Sonicare AirFloss - a pioneering hand held device which dispenses rapid bursts of air with micro-droplets of water (or mouthwash) to suffuse the interproximal spaces. The liquid is propelled between the teeth at 45 miles per hour dislodging plaque biofilm, while leaving the gums unscathed. AirFloss only needs a teaspoon of liquid to clean between every tooth in a minute.3

GREAT SUPPORT SHOWN FOR THE DENTISTRY SHOW 2013 As the fastest growing dental show in the UK, The Dentistry Show is an exciting event that caters for All That Dentistry Demands. Designed for every member of the dental team, the Show presents world-class speakers in lectures, hands-on workshops and live surgical demonstrations, offering delegates 70 hours of free verifiable CPD. BACD Amongst the numerous major dental organisations showing their support for The Dentistry Show 2013, is the BACD. Julian Caplan, President-Elect of BACD said “The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has a fundamental aim to promote ethical cosmetic dentistry within the dental community and to the general public. The Dentistry Show has a large number of attendees and covers a broad range of dental subjects. This is the ideal platform for the BACD to promote its ethos within the many areas that cosmetic dentistry touches.”

DLA The Dentistry Show is thrilled to announce that the DLA (Dental Laboratory Association) has offered its full support of the 2013 event and the new plans in place to support the future of dental laboratories. A significant focus for the DLA at present is the ‘British Bite Mark’ campaign, designed to raise awareness and emphasise the benefits of using custom made dental appliances manufactured within the UK. President of the DLA Barbara Hibbert says, “British Bite Mark are pleased to be supporting the new initiative by The Dentistry Show which will offer a unique combination of lectures and workshops alongside a dedicated trade area for dental laboratory suppliers. The promotion and support of British Bite Mark alongside helping technicians and lab owners stay right up-to-date can only help strengthen the dental industry in the UK.”

BADT Providing something for everyone, The Dentistry Show 2013 promises to exceed previous expectations. Presenting world-class speakers, the lectures and live theatres will demonstrate some of the latest ideas and concepts in the industry, enabling delegates to significantly enhance their skills. New to 2013, will be a Dental Therapist Skill-up session run with the BADT (British Association of Dental Therapists). Bal Chana, President of BADT said “As official supporters of the Dentistry Show over the last four years, The British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) is delighted to be hosting a number of hands-on, ‘Skill Up’ sessions, on a range of topics for dental therapists. The Dentistry Show is an ideal event where BADT is able to provide essential skills and training to support dental therapists in their day-to-day work. We are very excited with our involvement with this event and would encourage all members of the dental team to attend this show.”

BSP The team behind The Dentistry Show are delighted to announce that they will be working in partnership with the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) for the 2013 event.

opportunity to promote the importance of periodontics in everyday general dental practice,” he says. “We will be giving several presentations over the two days, covering a full range of topics from basic training aimed at newly qualified professionals, to more complex periodontal case guidance. We hope to deliver comprehensive talks and advice on current periodontal techniques, ensuring there is something for everyone. “The Dentistry Show is a bright, lively and wellorganised event, that I have personally attended many times. Endodontic products at a significantly lower price

Straight Teeth. Less Time. Clear Braces.

New to the UK and Irish markets VeDeM Supplies brings Endodontic products doing the same as existing products but better and at a significantly lower price.

The Six Month Smiles Short Term Ortho System is a conservative and cosmetic approach to treating adult patients with crooked teeth. The system is suitable for General Dental Practitioners, and does not require previous orthodontic experience.

This is just the beginning for this Company with offices in both Birmingham and Dublin. Using a revolutionary new business model we have cut the costs of many products and consumables, we can ensure that the dentist or specialist can have greater comfort in the skilful service they provide by easing pressure on them from operating costs.

Six Month Smiles uses a clear, fixed bracket and tooth colored wire system that can straighten smiles in about six months rather than the typical two to three years of comprehensive orthodontics. The system uses sound, proven orthodontic principles packaged in a simplistic system, to allow the GDP to deliver it with ease, confidence and predictability.
