The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) is well established as the event of the year for dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and lab owners. The 2015 show welcomed more than 1,500 professionals through the door and so it remains the best-attended event in the UK, with 84% of delegates rating the show as excellent or good.

Highlights of 2015 • 95% of delegates discovered new products and services and / or suppliers among the extensive exhibition. • 47% of delegates made purchases while at the show. • More than half of those in attendance were interested in CAD/CAM solutions. New for 2015, the CAD/CAM Theatre proved highly popular, with leading experts presenting inspirational cases, fresh ideas and cutting-edge technologies. Also introduced for the first time was Launchpad UK, introducing the latest products, materials and equipment on the UK market following global launches at IDS 2015 only a few weeks previous. Further highlights of the event included the Association of Dental Implantology’s (ADI) Implant Theatre and copious networking and socialising opportunities. The Lecture Theatre also hosted a selection of world-class speakers, plus there were opportunities to witness live demonstrations in the Practical Theatre and then get hands-on with new materials in the workshops.

dental organisations and societies. In 2016, we are delighted to welcome two brand new educational features run in conjunction with the Orthodontic Technologists Association (OTA) and the British Association of Clinical Dental Technology (BACDT). Orthodontic Technician’s Seminar Stream – Supported by the OTA This brand new seminar stream will offer a combination of exciting lectures and workshops suitable for both experienced orthodontic technicians and those who work in other fields and are interested in finding out more. A range of topics will be discussed from cleft lip and palate care to multi-stranded wire retainers and stent positioning, orthodontic technology materials and poly(methyl methacrylate)- free appliances. Sessions will also be run by top names in the field, including: • James Green, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust • Andrea Johnson, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust • Paul Mallett, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust • Rye Mattick, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust • Edward Mapley, Cardiff Metropolitan University • Daniel Shaw, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

What’s New for 2016? As the Dental Laboratories Association’s flagship event, DTS has long received support from various leading

handmade esthetic dental restorations. Von Grow calls it a group, but believes it is much more than that. Groups can be so closed off, and hopefully so far, the DTG has not come across as a closed group. It has been suggested that the DTG have a double name: The Dentist-Technicians Guild. Yes, Dentists have been added to this open group, and they are AWESOME. Bridging the gaps between Dentists and Technicians will be pivotal, and this will be done by adding more dentists to the group. The mission of the DTG is to fight for Quality restorations. The industry is changing. There are big companies buying and acquisitioning many of the smaller labs. Consolidation is in the midst. Labs are declining at an alarming rate. If you have not felt it, you will in the coming years. What are your plans for the future? The DTG propose that all dental technicians band together in the name of high end, handmade, esthetic restorations, and do not let machines take over your jobs. The idea is this: Instead of hoarding all of your secrets and techniques, the DTG give the information away freely to other like-minded technicians and dentists.

By doing so, dental technicians can rise to a level that no one can touch. It only works if it is done together. Dental technicians can carve out a niche for themselves that will serve as a protection when the big fish come swimming by. If this idea does not interest you, it is understandable. But everyone within the sound of the DTG’s voice that is feeling helpless, down trodden, fearful of the future, or just wants to get excited again about the work you do, let’s take a stand. Let’s get a worldwide network going that is so big, that it cannot fail. You do not have to fight against CAD/ CAM, but rather, let’s take it with us!

DTS 2016: BE THERE OR LACK FLAIR DTS is delighted to announce Steve Campbell RDT, founder of Nexus Dental Laboratory Ltd Harrogate, as Chairman of the 2016 educational programme. Steve recently received an award for Innovation and Support in Promoting British Dental Steve Campbell RDT Technology from the British Dental Association Awards, and is a prominent trainer and lecturer focusing on CAD/CAM digital workflows in restorative dentistry.

work for the UK and American dental press, makes him a first class speaker for the lab community. His input to the DTS 2016 will be invaluable for delegates wishing to remain up-to-date with the latest products and technology available in producing the highest quality restorative solutions. The Dental Technology Showcase 2016 will no doubt enlighten, motivate, excite and educate dental technicians and laboratory owners, all the while demonstrating the multitude of technological advancements which help to move the profession forward and widen options for surgeons and patients. Quite simply, you cannot afford to miss it.

“It was an honour to be asked to chair the educational programme at DTS 2016”, Steve said after receiving the invitation to chair. “I believe this is the most important show in the UK for dental technicians and lab owners. I hope that we can make a real statement about the quality and passion of UK dental technology by showcasing some of the world class technicians we have working in the UK labs, that are now lecturing all over the world.

DTG - Building a

worldwide network Continued from front page... Anyhow, machines are only as good as the operator. They are tools, like a wrench, or a hammer. They only do what we say. Without us, they just sit. Phil Reddington, CEO and Head Ceramist of Beever Dental Technology (BDT), adds his comments about what the DTG means to him: “Since joining the DTG in 2013 I have seen many changes in my work and my attitude towards work. Through the group I have made many new friends all around the world all either Technicians or Dentists and the thing I realised was this, we are all trying our best in difficult times to provide our patients with the best care possible. We can only achieve this by working as a team and supporting each other. The DTG taught me to share what knowledge I have with other members and not look over my shoulder and in return the knowledge I have gained within the group has helped me grow as a technician. Sometimes it is simple problem solving sometimes complex treatment planning but whatever dental questions I may have you can be sure someone in the group knows the answer and will freely advise. Not only this, I personally find the group to offer great support both morally and when the stuff hits the fan. If you are overwhelmed with cases, these guys and girls will travel to each other’s labs or cast or mill frames for each other at any time of the day or night.

“It’s my aim to show delegates some of the latest materials and products that are being used by these world class technicians, so that they come away aware of all the potential restorative options that are available.

I think the awareness raised in the group on different aspects of the industry also helps me make the right choices when looking at new technology or systems, honest unbiased opinion is something very rare in any industry I feel we get that in the guild.

“With DTS running parallel to The Dentistry Show, this also allows the chance to catch up with everyone in the dental team. I’d suggest that delegates try and arrange to come along with their surgeons, and show them just how much is changing in the dental technology arena.”

Von also wants to bring the benefits of the Guild to a wider audience through the DTG magazine and international Symposiums. We are looking to organise events here in the UK where technicians and dentists can join events like Dental Technology Showcase for very little financial outlay and learn from some of the best people in the industry.

With 13 years of implant technician experience behind him, Steve works alongside some of the most highly regarded dental surgeons in the UK. His extensive knowledge on the latest technology available in digital and CAD/CAM workflows and his

I Look forward to doing my part for the UK dental industry and for The DTG. I would urge anyone reading this to get involved with the online community and reach out to groups like the DTG because I know the Guild has made me a better technician.”

Another successful conference and awards ceremony for the BACDT On the 25th and 26th September 2015, Manchester once again played host to the BACDT Annual Conference, a two day event which gives CDTs a great chance to come together, and allows the BACDT office to personally thank the membership and the trade for all their support for the BACDT over the past years.

BACDT ANNUAL CONFERENCE AWARD WINNERS:

In terms of the conference line up, it would have been hard to put together a more diverse and interesting set of speakers, who provided members with a range of stimulating and informative topics. The six lectures covered topics ranging from consultation advice to aesthetics in prosthodontics, and received great feedback from all delegates. The conference finished with 2015’s BACDT Awards, this year attracting over 400 nomination forms from patients. This number has doubled from last year, a testament to the hard work of BACDT members, and their patients’ appreciation for all their hard work. In his opening speech, BACDT President Andy Barrs acknowledged that such figures truly show that everyone is a winner, with the biggest winner being Clinical Dental Technology in the UK. The main award, Member of the Year, went to a very deserving Les Wheatley, with the full list of winners and highly commended members below.

With DTA you’re covered • Want to know what you are worth or how you can increase your earning potential? Start by gathering the facts using DTA’s 2015 recommended pay scale for technicians working in a private commercial dental laboratory.

The Dental Technologists Association (DTA) is the UK’s professional representative body for dental technologists, whether qualified or in training. Managed by dental technicians, the association’s prime purpose is to serve its members through the advancement of standards within dental technology. DTA members are informed, supported, and encouraged through a raft of initiatives that are free or discounted at the point of joining.

CPD Each alternate month members receive our 28-page, colour journal, The Technologist or e-newsletter, Articulate. Both provide an array of interesting CPDbased articles that over a five-year cycle more than fulfil 50 hours of verifiable CPD, including those all-important core subjects. In addition our website facilitates the online completion of CPD, records progress and allows easy organisation and access to CPD information for when the GDC requests it. All free with membership.

Support (All free with membership) • DTA members can access a range of Fact Sheets from the safe management of gypsum waste, and the ins and outs of public liability insurance, to the facts about what metals can be used in crown and bridge restorations.

• Need to know something? We have a dedicated helpline that seeks to answer members’ questions: everything from compliance and continual professional development to audit tools and launching your own lab. • Need help? Our legal helpline is available 24 hours a day/365 days a year.

Indemnity Our market is becoming more litigious and as a dental professional, you must have indemnity cover. For just 12 pence a day (£45 per annum) UK Special Risks, through DTA membership, offers comprehensive, allinclusive cover including professional indemnity, public & products liability, and legal expenses including tax and VAT investigation.

Value for money DTA is run by dental technicians to support dental technicians. We are committed to keeping members in touch with what is going on in dental technology as well as the wider dental arena and we welcome new members every day. Full membership is just £8.50 a month and students are invited to join us for free. You won’t find better value for £8.50 – go on, join us. enigmalife+ denture teeth are truly inspired by nature. Our guide in their design was the beauty, detail and proportions that nature builds into our teeth and we sought to reproduce its miracle. The use of polymer materials in modern dental technology Phil Reddington, CEO and Head Ceramist of Beever Dental Technology (BDT) in Leeds, will be one of many high profile speakers in the Lecture Theatre. With more than 24 years’ experience in the dental industry, Phil has a wealth of knowledge on various different topics.

Phil Reddington

An active member of the ITI, ADI, BACD and BIDST, Phil is also a mentor, lecturer and author of several publications, as well as a member of the online dental group The Dental Technicians Guild.

His session, entitled “Full Arch Implant Reconstructions – A Better Way!”, will explore the advantages and disadvantages of polymer materials in modern dental technology and Phil will also share a revolutionary technique he has helped develop alongside Lee Mullins at his lab for implant restoration cases. He explains: “The session will give an overview of high performance polymers, discussing the indications and limitations of the materials. I have been using these products for more than

10 years and hope to share some of my own experiences with delegates, demonstrating how to use them for optimal results and focusing particularly on implant dentistry. This is definitely an emerging market with popularity of polymers on the rise, so I think it’s important that technicians are aware of their benefits now. “During the session I will also consider the ‘BDT Technique’. An idea born and developed with Lee Mullins in Leeds at BDT, it can be used to restore full-arch implant cases. It encompasses every stage of the process from the treatment planning to execution and communication between the laboratory and dentist. We have been offering training courses on the technique for several years now, but we want to share it with more professionals because we believe it simplifies the restoration process and is therefore achievable for all technicians. Costing nothing to implement and requiring next to no learning curve, this technique makes full-arch implant restorations easier and cheaper, with more predictable and easily repeatable results.”

“The speaker line-up for that event was fantastic and there were a lot of demonstrations and hands-on workshops on offer for delegates to make the most of. All of my team had a very productive couple of days and seemed to really enjoy the event!” “DTS 2016 looks no different, with a wide range of learning opportunities available for all. I believe that for dental technicians looking to improve their skills and understanding and get completely up-to-date, this is definitely the event they need to attend.” Phil will be joining an impressive line-up of speakers in the Lecture Theatre, including John Wibberley, George Morgan, Mark Bladen and Carl Fenwick. A diverse range of topics will be covered to help you develop your skills and improve your communication channels with collaborating dentists for enhanced quality of work produced.

Phil continues: “DTS 2015 was a very busy show for me as I was involved in delivering lectures and on-stand sessions. As it was co-located with The Dentistry Show, I was able to meet with dentists I work with who perhaps are geographically located far from my lab, providing great socialising and networking opportunities.
