PRE-SHOW NEWSPAPER • NOVEMBER 2014
OTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE
Occupational Therapists are bombarded on a daily basis about reduced budgets, service cuts and non-existent pay rises, so it’s time to shine the spotlight on some positive news.
Kate Sheehan, Independent Occupational Therapist
OTs, make sure you take centre stage at the free to attend Occupational Therapy Show where there will be high quality, clinically relevant and cutting edge continuous professional development (CPD) by some of the most respected national and international authorities in the profession.
What you can gain CPD is a critical part of life long learning, it’s key to continued registration and is highlighted as a significant part of the Standards of Performance and Ethics (1), CPD can come in many forms and the Occupational Therapy Show can provide excellent evidence of your ongoing professional development. Meet an exhibitor and see what is new, attend one of their sessions in the showcase and innovation theatres, catch up with like minded colleagues for a coffee and chat or attend one of the amazing seminars. World renowned speakers Professor Michael Iwama is travelling from Canada to explain the latest conceptual model of Occupational Therapy (OT), The Kawa Model, and how it can be easily applied to everyday practice. By incorporating OT theory into daily practice, you can show real value to your service, not only to patients but also to the commissioning bodies contracting your services. If you are wishing to drill down deeper in your clinical fields, Anne Corbett is going to inform Occupational Therapists working in paediatrics on outcome measures. Specifically
on how and what to measure to make an impact. Katrina Brannigan is a renowned OT educator and will also be speaking at the Occupational Therapy Show. Specialising in mental health, Katrina will highlight the existing evidence in this field of practice, how to use it to promote your service and how clinicians can be involved in growing further evidence to emphasise the benefits of OT. Emerging areas of practice for OT’s are high on the agenda due to the changing climate within statutory services. Alice Hortop will talk about humour as a therapeutic intervention. Alice recently spoke at the highly acclaimed Mental Health Day at Bethlam Museum of the Mind and will show how a person’s sense of humour could be used to improve occupational engagement and performance. You will also find Nicholas Deal discussing the benefits of working as an expert witness and what law firms are looking for when instructing an OT. Bringing OTs together The world is getting smaller, there are 417,235 (2) Occupational Therapists world wide, and we need to work together, learn together and lobby together to promote our amazing profession. So come and see what Occupational Therapists can do as a profession at the Occupational Therapy Show. I look forward to seeing you all there. If you have yet to register for the Occupational Therapy show, visit www.theotshow.com/newspaper3 alternatively call our delegate management team on 0207 348 5776 or 0207 348 1840. 1.Standard of conduct, performance and ethics. WFOT celebrate occupational therapy across the world to unite all OTs
Get 25% Discount on “Coaching Skills for OTs”
World Occupational Therapy Day was first launch on 27th October 2010. Since then it has become an important date in the occupational therapy calendar to promote and celebrate the profession internationally, here’s a little more about the founders of World OT Day.
It enables people to work towards what they want rather than what they don’t want. It is being fast recognized as the “missing link” in helping people to change health beliefs, raise self-efficacy and develop sustainable plans.
As an international organisation, our membership comprises of occupational therapists who speak a range of languages. We offer translated documents and online services that enable people to access our publications from wherever they are based.
This e-course is aimed at Occupational Therapists who want to explore coaching and consider using it as part of their professional “tool kit”. It aims to provide some practical tools and methods of practice. It will show how coaching not only benefits our clients, but also supports our own personal development.
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) is the international organisation that represents over 420,000 occupational therapists worldwide. With over 100,000 occupational therapy students and 50,000 occupational therapy assistants, the number of people involved in the profession is in excess of a half a million. WFOT is truly unique in that it is the only organisation that represents over 80 national occupational therapy organisations worldwide.
Exclusively from the OTCoach Coaching is a powerful approach to working with individuals and groups.
If you would like to find out more about what WFOT could offer you visit www.wfot.org.
Founded in 1952, WFOT is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO), which has been in official relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO) since 1959 and recognised by the United Nations (UN) since 1963.
E-course outcomes: At the end of the course, participants will have: • Identified and understood the fundamental processes involved in coaching including opportunity to use and experience some coaching tools • Understood the barriers to coaching • Explored possible applications of coaching within OT • Tools and techniques to use with service users, patients and other people they work with
As the only international organisational representing occupational therapy worldwide, WFOT offers a plethora of products and services to serve a global community many of which are housed on the website www.wfot.org.
• Gained the personal benefits from participation including increased self-awareness of values, strengths etc. This is an open access course which can be started at any time and worked through at your own pace. There are approximately 18 hours of learning involved combining reading, watching videos and a variety of exercises.
In 2013 WFOT’s website generated a staggering 750,000 page views from 197 different countries. WFOT’s presence on social media is enjoying incredible success with over 11,000 followers on our Facebook Page www.facebook. com/thewfot and 1,600 on Twitter @thewfot.

VISIT US ON STAND AA1
The Disabled Living Foundation is delighted to be partnering the Occupational Therapy Show 2014. As a national charity providing impartial advice, information and training on independent living since 1969 we are well known to OTs through a number of our services. The DLF team will be on hand to provide the dedicated Information Point and will be using DLF-Data to handle queries from delegates about equipment and suppliers. DLF-Data’s roots lie in the old Hamilton Index that sat as four large ring-binders in practitioners’ offices and was regarded as an industry ‘bible’. Today over 11,000 products are available everywhere that practitioners have access to mobile data. Unlike a basic product name or keyword search using an internet search engine, DLF Data allows subscribers to view and compare similar products side by side and produce reports saving their findings. Reports can include details of products, suppliers, local retailers and organisations such as charities advising on certain conditions. The reports can be printed or emailed and are often produced and given to service users by their practitioner.
MHRA alerts are included detailing products that require a replacement part from the manufacturer, and literature is listed alongside product classes. These literature references may assist practitioners who are looking for an ‘evidencebase’ for certain types of technology.
supports Living Made Easy our popular website for members of the public seeking advice on equipment, AskSARA our online guided advice tool and it is the resource used by our telephone helpline advisors to give out advice over the phone, helping over 25,000 callers annually.
DLF-Data is also available as a web application on mobile phones and tablets allowing professionals to respond whilst ‘on the move’ and access solutions whilst in consultation with service users within their own homes or care environment or in fact anywhere away from their office.
DLF also runs a successful training programme that includes an accredited trusted assessor training course, we run an Equipment Demonstration Centre located at our base in Hammersmith and DLF also runs the annual Moving & Handling People conference that will celebrate its 21st year in 2015.
The central product database is the largest of its type in Europe and is used not only to power DLF-Data but it also
In conjunction with the organisers of the Show DLF is announcing a special promotion for visitors to the event. New subscribers to DLF-Data attending the Occupational Therapy Show will be entitled to 15 months subscription for the price of 12 months**. DLF, Ground Floor, Landmark House, Hammersmith Bridge Road, London, W6 9EJ Tel: 020 7289 6111 info@dlf.org.uk www.dlf.org.uk ** The offer is available to people attending the Occupational Therapy 2014 and is accessed via a voucher that they can collect from the DLF stand. New subscribers need to quote the voucher code to redeem the offer. See http://www.dlfdata.org.uk/ for details of subscription rates and to try out the service. The offer can be used in conjunction with reduced rates offered to voluntary organisations and COT members.

What’s new with Theraposture? Partnering with the charity Newlife at the Occupational Therapy Show, Theraposture will be showcasing its pioneering assistive beds and care cots whilst offering a unique competition to Occupational Therapists. Theraposture is a family run business established in 1981, which is the preferred choice of many OTs recommending power-adjustable beds, chairs and care cots to clients requiring mobility assistance at home. This Wiltshire-based specialist supports the whole UK with trusted solutions and ethic assessment procedures that ensure vulnerable individuals can remain independent and avoid expensive care costs. It is a long standing supplier to the Newlife Foundation which is a charity dedicated to providing essential, supportive equipment to children with disabilities and life-limiting conditions. Theraposture works closely with the charity to ensure positive outcomes for disabled children and their families – hence the two organisations are exhibiting together at the Occupational Therapy Show.
We understand accurate, proven product information is essential for OTs when making informed recommendations regarding assistive furniture. Hence the details we will be handing out, will ensure their clients are prescribed the ideal solution for greater dignity, safety and care. We will also be demonstrating why our Safe-T bed, Mascot Mk2 cot and Rotoflex bed are such popular choices with so many OTs nationwide. The 2013 OT Show was a significant success for us and we anticipate an even busier show this year. I would encourage all OTs who prescribe assistive beds, chairs and cots, to visit stand E40 and enter the free prize draw to win the latest iPad Air.”
At the Occupational Therapy Show

The Safe-T Bed is an innovative care cot/bed hybrid that has integrated, solid sides that fold down when required and is a new alternative to either traditional cots or beds, with standard drop-down side rails or cot sides. The Safe-T Bed is ideal for children who require higher lateral protection than provided by traditional style beds with drop down side rails, but do not require a higher-sided care cot with doors.
Theraposture’s Rotoflex bed truly delivers independence, as it is a real alternative to hoisting and carer assistance. In this situation the bed can pay for itself many times over as the cost of care at home or in a residential setting is so high. The Rotoflex can be electrically operated to rotate and move the user from a recumbent position to a seated position, ready for a standing transfer. It can be specified as a single bed or part of a double combination so partners with varying mobility difficulties can still sleep together. In addition to its smooth and controlled rotational movement, the Rotoflex provides powered profiling and variable height function and can be fitted to either side of a double bed.
In addition to meeting senior representatives from Theraposture and Newlife, all OTs who visit stand E40 can be entered into a free prize draw to win the latest iPad Air tablet from Apple. This high value prize will be available to all visitors alongside free information regarding the Theraposture range of pioneering products. These details are essential for OTs when compiling client assessments and reports for case managers. Highly experienced Theraposture Assessors will be on hand throughout the exhibition to explain how their products deliver trusted independence in the community. Liam Braddell, Theraposture Sales Director explained: “We are delighted to be offering OTs a unique package of benefits at the Occupational Therapy Show this year.

New partnership will challenge the boundaries of community neurological rehabilitation Odstock Medical Ltd. (at the National Clinical FES Centre in Salisbury) join in partnership with Krysalis Consultancy to offer an innovative and dynamic integrated community based neurological rehabilitation service. Treatment with Neuro Muscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) following central nervous system damage can be a powerful tool in the rehabilitation and management of the upper limb. NMES in the management of shoulder subluxation, is supported by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in England and in The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland.
The multi-disciplinary team is lead by a team of experts including a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, Professor of Neuropsychology and Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist. The team uses a goal focus, evidence based approach to enable individuals with complex needs to receive medical care and specialist neurological rehabilitation within their own home. The team have access to specialist seating and orthotic services and are able to offer expertise in spasticity management.
NMES has a number of different effects on nerve and muscle tissue including:
Over a number of years Occupational Therapists have had a prominent role in the research undertaken at The National FES Centre in Salisbury, looking into the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation in the Multiple Sclerosis populations and also NMES in the upper limb in both Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury.
• Muscle strengthening • Increasing muscle endurance
NMES can be used in the management of glenohumeral joint subluxation, improving postural control and selective movement around the shoulder girdle, promotion of a functional reach, and to facilitate motor control of wrist, fingers and thumb. NMES can inhibit spasticity helping to prevent soft tissue changes and the loss of passive and active range of motion
• Inhibiting abnormal tone • Improving the compliance of soft tissues • Improving sensory awareness of and muscle recruitment in the limb
Odstock Medical Ltd. currently run courses for NMES applications in the Upper Limb, but working with Krysalis Consultancy, a revised course is being developed to reflect changes in current practice and the innovative treatment Pathways being used in this collaboration. Courses are run in Salisbury and throughout the country via host centres, who are provided with tutors and administrative support to enable them to deliver courses locally.
The effects of NMES on muscle and nerve tissue can lead both to enhanced active functional outcomes for individuals but the treatment also has a role to play in improving passive functional tasks, limb posture and preventing soft tissue changes, which can lead to deformity and contractures.
• Promoting positive neuroplastic changes through the enablement of task performance and repetition By activating paralysed muscles electrical stimulation can reduce the pain associated with a shoulder subluxation. Stimulation can improve recruitment of muscles stabilising and controlling the shoulder girdle.
The Krysalis/OML team will be at the Occupational Therapy Show please come and find them to discuss the role of NMES in upper limb management within neurological rehabilitation, training and employment opportunities and at the conference. Improving standards and outcomes of disability equipment assessments and provision By Brian Donnelly, Chief Executive, CECOPS CIC Disability equipment services provided by all agencies and sectors in the UK are an important part of our care system and often we take these services for granted. With an increase in the elderly population, and more people being cared for in the community, there is a greater need and demand for these services. Good quality assessments, and timely provision of equipment, improve clinical and financial outcomes and the overall user experience. outcome-based standards to follow when commissioning, supplying or assessing for equipment. Our Code is a useful tool for supporting clinical staff in delivering safe, good quality and effective services. Both clinical teams and independent therapists can register with us. One of the independent OTs registered with us has this to say: “As an independent practitioner the CECOPS code of practice embodies my own values of integrity alongside delivering high quality and safe services to the general public.” Caroline Molloy, MD, OT Consultant Ltd. Already about 30 NHS organisations, local authorities, and independent OTs are working with us. Such has been the interest in our work that we are now extending our Code to cover wheelchair and seating services, and this will be ready by December 2014. We are also developing self-regulation software to allow organisations, including clinical staff, to monitor their compliance against the code standards. Brian Donnelly, Chief Executive, CECOPS CIC
CECOPS CIC supports clinical professionals and other staff in organisations supplying disability equipment into the community, via our Code of Practice, which sets out
In addition, a code of practice is under development for all assistive technologies and medical devices in care homes (nursing and residential), hospices, and hospital settings; these versions will be available mid to late 2015. We also offer training to commissioners, providers, and clinical professionals. We have recently begun working

A line-up of internationally renowned speakers In only its second year, the Occupational Therapy Show is already attracting the biggest names in the profession to present the latest innovations and models on occupational therapy. Jen Gash is an accredited coach and independent Occupational Therapist. Jen established OTCoach in 2006 and feels passionately that many OT’s would benefit from coaching, but also that coaching lends itself greatly to OT practice. Coaching, OT and creativity are her passion.
Professor Iwama is an internationally known champion of culturally relevant occupational therapy. He created the Kawa Model, which has been incorporated extensively into occupational therapy settings worldwide. The Kawa Model is Occupational Therapy’s newest conceptual model of practice and it’s first substantial theoretical work to emerge outside of the West. Infused with Eastern philosophical perspectives and world views, the Kawa Model brings nature and ecology to the profession’s evolving rational dialectic. Elizabeth Ainsworth (B Occ Thy, Hons; M Occ Thy, Contemporary Clinical Practice) is a private practice Occupational Therapist and Access Consultant (qualified and accredited) who has been working in the housing field in Australia for over 20 years. Elizabeth’s presentation will provide an overview of Occupational Therapy practice issues that can arise when working with people in the bariatric range, who live in their own homes.
Jen’s presentation aims to provide inspiration and ideas, courage and creativity served with a generous helping of realism and humour. Jen will highlight some of the key questions we should ask ourselves when generating ideas and plans for services, businesses and future OT roles. Jen will also acknowledge the need for support for OTs, during these exciting but uncertain times. Jain Holmes graduated in 1990 and has worked in the NHS and in the USA. Since returning from the USA, Jain has been actively involved with return to work rehabilitation, functional capacity evaluation, job analyses and job and workplace modifications. Jain will explain her current study and results to date exploring the barriers and enablers to the implementation of a complex Early Specialist Traumatic Brain Injury Vocational Rehabilitation intervention in the NHS.
Michael Mandelstram is widely known in the OT profession for his COT publication ‘Occupational Therapy: Law & good practice’ as well as for his challenging and thought provoking lectures. The session will outline the implications for occupational therapists, service users and patients of the Care Act 2014, which overhauls adult social care legislation - and also of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 and its potentially wide ranging effect on the NHS. Dr Katrina Bannigan is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Occupational Therapy at Plymouth University. In her previous role as the Director of the Research Centre for Occupation & Mental Health she worked with researchers from all over the world to develop research related to occupation & mental health. This presentation will provide an overview of the existing research in occupation and mental health and will be used as a springboard for exploring what the gaps in the knowledge are and the challenges associated with researching occupation and mental health. Information point at the Occupational Therapy Show 2014
The UK Mobility Scooter Market – what’s happening?
With an even bigger exhibition this year, you may want advice on who and what’s on the show floor.
A new research report Mobility Scooters: a market study, 2014 carried out by Rica, a UK consumer research charity, on behalf of the Department for Transport, gives an interesting snapshot of what’s happening today in the UK mobility scooter market.
Not sure which suppliers you need to visit for specific product and service categories? At the Information Point Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) can assist you with any queries you have regarding the Occupational Therapy Show and advise on how to make the most of your visit. With advisors from DLF on hand (DLF is a national charity providing impartial advice, information and training on independent living to professionals, disabled people, older adults, carers, disabled children and their families), they can point you in the
direction of the most appropriate products and services, advise on appropriate seminars and help you make the most of your time at the Occupational Therapy Show. DLF will be acting as the official information point for Occupational Therapy Show, visit
The report which aims to inform future transport policies to address the needs of disabled and older people, looks at market trends, the profile of users and consultation on class 3 mobility scooters. It draws on a survey of 480 mobility scooter users, an analysis of market data and studies as well as industry consultations. Some recommendations from the research report include: • an urgent need for accurate statistics on mobility scooter use for policy makers and those planning public transport, road and pedestrian infrastructure. More research is needed to clarify the safety issues associated with increased pavement use of scooters, in particular stopping distances. • Compulsory insurance is likely to be unpopular. However, consultation with the insurance industry is needed to identify options for widening access to low cost insurance. • The requirement to register class 3 vehicles should be reviewed. • Greater availability of local (community based) and national training schemes for mobility scooter users are required. Rica has carried out more research on mobility scooters including the usability of scooter controls and the policies, practices and concerns relating to the carriage of mobility scooters on public transport. For OTs and scooter users, Rica has practical

guidance: • choosing a mobility scooter • an online guide to mobility scooters can go on buses, trains and trams Older drivers Rica also carried out a survey on In-car safety technology based on the views and experiences of 471 motorists over 55 years old. There are 2 reports drawn from the research: • In-car safety technology survey report • A literature review and expert opinion with views from academia and industry experts. • Both reports are available online at: www.rica.org.uk/content/car-safety technologies For OTs, Rica has a free consumer guide in print and online called Driving safely for life, aimed at older drivers giving practical pointers to help them stay mobile and safe for longer. To obtain a printed copy of the guide, send a large (A4) self-addressed envelope with 73p in stamps to: Rica, Unit G03, The Wenlock, 50 - 52 Wharf Road, London N1 7EU. Alison Ensor, Senior Partner at Foremans LLP, offers advice on the best solutions if you are thinking of going it alone… What trading options are available to me as a self employed contractor? With the economy improving now is an excellent time to start trading as a self employed independent contractor. The prospect of a better work/life balance and an increase in your take home pay is always an attractive one. There are three main options to carefully consider when becoming self employed. Umbrella payroll company You can become an employee of an umbrella company enabling you to claim certain expenses as tax free from the monies you earn. A good umbrella payroll company will advise on allowable expenses, calculate and pay monies due to HMRC promptly, accrue your holiday pay, and only charge a fee for when you work. Sole trader Many people believe that their only option is to work as a sole trader. The advantages are obvious: you are in control of your own work making work/life balance easier and you

can claim any legitimate business expenses tax free. The disadvantages are less obvious: you are the business with no legal distinction, and all profits are taxed and NI’d in the tax year they are incurred regardless of whether you personally have used that income or invested in your business. Limited company The most popular option for the majority of self employed contractors, in whatever industry, is having a limited company. This involves being the sole director and shareholder. The principal advantage, apart from financial gain, is that the limited company is a separate legal entity from the individual. The law regards the company as a legal person in its own right. The separation of business from individual is an advantage over the sole trader scenario. The director receives a tax-efficient salary and claims tax free expenses. Profits are distributed, as and when required, to the shareholder by dividend. The director/owner, therefore, has more control over how and when the income in their possession is taxed.

Financial Implications There are also financial implications to your choice. Based on a 35-hour week at £25ph and with £150 tax allowable expenses your weekly take home in 2014/15 should be: Umbrella payroll: £643.69* Sole trader: £730.93* Limited company: £779.40* (*Note: for illustrative purposes only)
