The Pharmacy Show Network

Plans to move the profession of pharmacy into a future that is “clinical, underpinned by efficient and effective use of technology”, suggest natural opportunities for the profession of pharmacy – but they are not going to be without consequences, admits chief pharmaceutical officer Dr Keith Ridge. Taking place at a pivotal time for the pharmacy profession, the ninth Pharmacy Show is set to boost its reputation as the go-to event in the pharmacy calendar. At this year’s Pharmacy Show, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on October 1819, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to add your voice to the debate on the future of pharmacy: on day one of the conference NHS England’s deputy chief pharmaceutical officer Dr Bruce Warner and others will be in the conference’s Keynote Theatre to explain the opportunities - and challenges - that are inherent in NHS England’s vision of new roles for pharmacists. Two days’ worth of networking, with key opinion leaders and your peers in pharmacy, over both days of the conference and exhibition will prove an invaluable chance to broaden your perspective on the road ahead for the profession. Dr Ridge detailed the expansion of clinical pharmacy in all settings “as a dead cert”, while at the same time predicting the advent of large scale centralised dispensing, click and collect, home delivery and generally ‘digitised’ traditional pharmacy practice. Ridge’s speech raises a number of challenging questions for pharmacists – does the expansion of clinical pharmacy – particularly in GP surgeries sound a death knell for community pharmacy? Or are the patient groups who won’t access surgery-based pharmaceutical services sufficiently different and sufficient in number to provide enough work for all? As pharmacy prepares to play its part in delivering the Department of Health’s vision of an integrated, patient-centred NHS, the two days of The Pharmacy Show conference and exhibition offer unprecedented opportunity for pharmacists and their teams, their suppliers, professional representatives and their political leaders to get together to discuss how ministerial goals can be practically achieved. Presentations will offer pharmacy teams the

For pharmacists and their teams set on understanding the strategic opportunities and challenges for pharmacy over the next few years, the Keynote Theatre will be the conference setting of choice. On day two of the Keynote Theatre conference programme, headlines will be made when new pharmacy minister Alistair Burt will be on hand to unveil the Department of Health’s latest plans for pharmacy in England. With its new and clear emphasis on pharmacy service development, the Keynote Theatre will also host presentations from high profile speakers such as NHS England deputy chief pharmaceutical officer Dr Bruce Warner, Royal Pharmaceutical Society director of professional development and support Dr Catherine Duggan and General Pharmaceutical Council chief executive Duncan Rudkin.

Alistair Burt to address pharmacists at first-ever Pharmacy Show Ministerial address

Minister Address Monday 19th Oct

Alistair Burt, the health minister responsible for pharmacy, will deliver a ministerial address at the Pharmacy Show next month (October 18th and 19th, NEC Birmingham) where more than 7,500 delegates are expected. Alistair Burt MP, replaced Earl Howe as the health minister in David Cameron’s new cabinet last May. In his new role as Minister of State for Community and Social Care, Burt will also have involvement on issues such as the GP contract and out-of-hours reform and integration of care services. Burt, who has been the Conservative MP for North East Bedfordshire since 2001, has previously been deputy chairman of the Conservative party and junior minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In a recent interview with the Pharmaceutical Journal, the Minister said he regarded pharmacists as an ‘untapped resource in our health service’ as he unveiled plans for pharmacists’ access to patient summary care records together with a £7.5m fund for training tool around access to SCRs. “As experts in medicines, they (pharmacists) can help people manage their conditions and take some of the pressure off our GPs. That’s why it makes complete sense to give them the ability to access patients’ summary care records, where appropriate.” “A pilot has already shown that, as a result of this (access to SCRs), as many as nine out of ten people can get the help they need from their pharmacist without having to be sent to another service. I encourage all community pharmacists to get involved and further improve the care we can give people in their communities,” the Minister told the PJ last month. ClaireWard, chair of PharmacyVoice, said Alistair Burt’s inclusion in the year’s revamped healthcare conference at the Pharmacy Show was timely and welcomed by the profession. “The first ministerial address for the Pharmacy Show demonstrates that those in Government are starting to listen more attentively to what pharmacy has to offer. We have a new Government and a new Minister with responsibility for pharmacy.

New look Pharmacy Show promotes support staff role in population health Does the National Health Service recognise the true potential value of pharmacists to the health system – or is the Government trying to create ‘mini-GPs’? At this year’s Pharmacy Show, taking place on October 18-19 at the NEC, Birmingham, this is just one of the key questions to be discussed by the 7,000+ plus pharmacists, technicians, assistants and business associates expected to attend. If you miss the chance to hear the Pharmacists’ Defence Association tackle this issue on day one of the Pharmacy Show conference and exhibition, there are plenty of other opportunities to discuss the pros and cons of innovative pharmacy practice in the Local Pharmacy Innovation Theatre – just one of the eight conference education programme streams on offer at this years’ new-look show. Remodelled this year to reflect the changing nature of professional pharmacy practice, the educational and exhibition contents of the 2015 Pharmacy Show have been crafted by an advisory panel of pharmacy key opinion leaders, including professional body, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) and Pharmacy Voice, which represents more than 90% of all community pharmacies in England. Grass roots pharmacy is also represented on the advisory board by O’Brien, C&D Independent of the CarEoghan Ad 177x170_Layout 1 21/09/2015 15:07Pharmacy Page 2

Year Award 2014, and Luvjit Kandula, Warwickshire LPC Chair and Chief Officer of Leicestershire and Rutland LPC, among others. This year’s conference offers education in eight areas: as well as the Local Pharmacy Innovation Theatre, which has been expanded to offer more space to pioneering practice, this year there is the new Pharmaceutical Care Skills Workshop Theatre and the new Technology Hub. In the Keynote Theatre – a signature element of the Pharmacy Show - the 2015 conference organisers are delighted to welcome the new pharmacy minister Alistair Burt, who will be speaking on day two of the conference (10am). In the new expanded Local Pharmacy Innovation Theatre, pharmacy teams will hear presentations offering tips and hints for effective practice in areas such as emergency supply and supporting seasonal resilience, domiciliary Medicines Use Reviews, elderly care and independent prescribing. In the new Pharmaceutical Care Skills Theatre, pharmacists can catch presentations on quick and effective MURs in patients taking anticoagulants, inhaler technique, and blood pressure workshops. Now in its ninth year, the Pharmacy Show is known as an event for the whole pharmacy team. In a first for the Pharmacy Show – and delivering an all-round programme of educational content – the 2015 event will host an RBforHealth theatre with a focus on selfcare. Here, staff can enjoy presentations on pharmacy

‘staples’ such as dry eye, childhood fever, dry skin and headache. In the expanded Public Health and Wellbeing Forum, presentations look at areas such as stopping smoking, vaccinations, weight loss and digestive health and contraception. The Business and Clinical Theatres also make a welcome return. No Pharmacy Show would be complete without a vibrant exhibition floor and at this year’s event over 400 exhibitors are booked to attend. The exhibition floor will host the widest range of suppliers, services and partners to pharmacy, and as over 90 per cent of delegates from the 2014 Pharmacy Show will tell you, this is your pharmacy’s chance to meet suppliers and see products that you have not seen before.

Exciting times: What’s now and what’s next for Community Pharmacy? ...Continued from page 1 Thanks to the expert input of a new advisory panel, the Pharmacy Show’s eight conference streams have been carefully recrafted for 2015 to offer pharmacists and their teams over 60 education sessions in new areas for technology and business, as well as self-care (courtesy of RBforhealth). There is expanded content to enjoy in Local Pharmacy Innovation, Public Health and Wellbeing and Pharmaceutical Care Skills, and the Clinical Theatres. Among the highlights of this year’s conference is the new Technology Hub area - an innovation for the 2015 Pharmacy Show – where visitors can hear experts from leading organisations such as NHS England and the National Pharmacy Association. There will be specialist, in-depth information on developments such as hub and spoke dispensing, cost effective drug procurement and reimbursement, apps to support your patient service and medicines management, and the Electronic Prescription Service. Importantly for those needing ‘in the field’ tips and hints, practising pharmacists will also be on hand to discuss and share their own experiences of using pharmacy technology for the benefit of those newer to the game. Also new this year is a redesigned Business Theatre. A signature element of the Pharmacy Show since its inception, the Business Theatre programme will give today’s pharmacy managers and owners all the information, advice and guidance they need to run a financially successful business. At this year’s show, leading lights from the world of pharmacy business will be on hand during both days to tackle complex issues such as maximising prescription business, releasing dispensary capacity, care home business, pharmacy finance, wholesaling, marketing, and sales and acquisitions. Recognising that advances in pharmacy practice will require expert use of the pharmacy skill mix, the Pharmacy Show also offers pharmacy support staff a two-day programme of expert educational content. This year, the conference’s newly expanded Public Health and Wellbeing Forum has a renewed focus on clinical services such as running a stop smoking service, weight loss, emergency contraception and diabetes prevention. For those staff members with a specific interest in the pharmacy’s OTC sales business, a new, two-day programme of presentations from leading OTC supplier Reckitt Benckiser is on offer. In the new-look Local Pharmacy Innovation Theatre, pharmacy teams can hear presentations offering tips and hints for all staff for effective practice in areas such as emergency supply and supporting seasonal resilience, domiciliary Medicines Use Reviews, elderly care and independent prescribing. In the new Pharmaceutical Care Skills Theatre, pharmacists can catch presentations on quick and effective MURs in patients taking anticoagulants, and inhaler awareness in respiratory disease. What’s more, with over 400 exhibitors, the exhibition floor will showcase the latest offers and support from pharmacy’s professional as well as business partners. This ensures that this year’s Pharmacy Show will give you everything you need to take your pharmacy forward - professionally as well as financially.

Pharmacy Voice & patient safety This year Pharmacy Voice has launched a Patient Safety Group for community pharmacy Medication Safety Officers (MSOs). The group builds upon Pharmacy Voice’s Sign up to Safety commitment made in September 2014 to keep pharmacy staff informed, ensuring they remain up to date on topics and developments that could impact on patient safety. The Group’s priorities include understanding the culture that underpins safe practice and, in particular, the human factors impacting the dispensing process. Patient safety issues being addressed in the coming months include safeguarding vulnerable adults and children, pharmacy processes in place to reduce the occurrence of incidents involving insulin, the role of social media in the handling of incidents, and, on the back of the recent rebalancing medicines consultation, ways in which we can increase the reporting of and subsequent learning from patient safety incidents. Janice Perkins, Superintendent pharmacist at Well pharmacy and Chair of the Patient Safety group commented, “The enthusiasm, dedication and professional knowledge of those who have joined the Pharmacy Voice Patient Safety Group is second to none. Since our inception the value that our collaboration can have is clear; learning from competitors and sharing knowledge across the sector. Ultimately this means that patients can be assured of the absolute priority that community pharmacy places on safety. We are incorporating the work of the Medicines Safety Officers’ (MSO) network into the group but also trying to make a practical difference to patient safety within community pharmacy.” To share learnings Pharmacy Voice is publishing a biannual Patient Safety bulletin and hosting an event. Patient Safety in Community Pharmacy on 30th November in Leeds aims to explore and advance patient safety culture in the sector. Pharmacy Voice would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in the event or who would like to offer help and support in this area. Contact kate.livesey@pharmacyvoice.com for more information.

PROVIDING ACCESS TO EXCELLENCE

The revolution against lice and nits.

Effective, patented technology for the detection and removal of both lice and nits. Nitview® Ledcomb is an internationally patented medical device that incorporates an ultraviolet light and detachable comb with micro-channelled teeth for the effective removal of both lice and nits. The lice, their eggs and nits (empty egg cases) glow under the UV light making them very easy to find amongst the hairs and then remove with the comb. UV light is absorbed by the chitin, a major constituent of the “shell” of lice and nits.

Award-winning lawyers delivering specialist advice tailored to your pharmacy needs. For more information about the services we provide, come and visit us at The Pharmacy Show - Stand PJ73 or contact Philip Walton on 01483 411471 / philip.walton@penningtons.co.uk.

Chitin emits fluorescence during exposure to UV which makes the insects glow. • Is safe for use on both wet and dry hair • Does not rely on insecticide chemicals • Will not cause resistance to treatment • Will not cause allergy or irritation

Vote for the Natural Healthcare in the Community Awards The Natural Healthcare in the Community Awards, now in their fourth year and sponsored by The Pharmacy Show, provide the perfect showcase for independent pharmacies to view and vote for the huge and tempting array of natural products on the market - you’ll be able to see and sample the nominations on the Natural Healthcare in the Community stand (PJ38) at the show. From these 60 products in six categories, the winners that you choose will be announced on the second day of The Pharmacy Show. That’s when the champagne will be uncorked to celebrate the success of these cutting-edge natural products. There are six sections: Bodycare & Toiletries, VMS & Herbals, Allergies & Diagnostics, Skincare, Mothercare & Baby and Natural Oral Care The range of products short-listed, emphasises the continuing growth of natural OTC products for pharmacies in recent years with new innovations vying for top spot with tried and trusted traditional remedies. As media and education partner to the show, Natural Healthcare in the Community continues to lead the way with innovative ways to develop and integrate natural products within community healthcare. The Awards are just part of the pioneering work of Natural Healthcare in the Community’s publisher JHN Productions. With its original title Natural Pharmacy Magazine, the company was first to market with the concept and then pioneered the Face to Face Wellbeing Centres scheme, a ground-breaking business opportunity for pharmacists and BANT Registered Nutritional Therapists, in partnership with Babi Chana BSc and the British Association for Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy (BANT). Pharmacies wanting to know more about how the scheme can benefit their business should visit the Face to Face Wellbeing Centres exhibit on Stand PJ33. Or come and vote and sample your favourite natural brands on stand PJ38.

Cumbrian pharmacist drives forward the case for independent prescribing What kind of things does an independent prescriber prescribe?

One day back in 2013, pharmacist Gareth Jones from Barrow-in-Furness attended a roadshow and started talking to some of his local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) representatives about the benefits of running a pharmacy Minor Ailments Service (MAS), but that was just the start. Since then Gareth has not only worked to get the service up and running, but he has also now undertaken an independent prescribing course, funded by NHS Cumbria CCG, and been given access to patient records. At the roadshow, Gareth had advised the CCG that Murrays Pharmacy is located in an area of high deprivation without a GP practice nearby and so a service allowing patients to have quick access to medical treatments for common ailments would be of benefit to the local community. Gareth then paved the way for others by helping create the specification for and piloting MAS in his own pharmacy last year before helping to roll it out across the area when it proved popular. Before long, another thought occurred to Gareth: wouldn’t it be even more useful a service if I could also give prescription-only medicines to patients? Patient Group Directions (PGDs) were a possibility, but these still have limits, and so the idea for an independent pharmacist prescribing service was born. Again Gareth worked with his CCG to make his idea a reality and NHS Cumbria even agreed to fund his Non-Medical Prescribing course.

In conjunction with Cumbria LPC, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) and Healthcare Gateway, NHS Cumbria CCG has also been working to provide pharmacists with access to GP records. Gareth is currently piloting this phase of the MAS plan and, if proved successful, this will be rolled out to all pharmacies in the area who offer MAS. Now, the new Healthcare Gateway platform allows Gareth to find out what he needs to know, with patient consent, and generates a report for the GP practice so they can see what he has prescribed and the advice given without the need for additional work by either party. Jeff Forster, Chief Officer of Cumbria LPC, said: “We’re very pleased at this opportunity community pharmacy has to demonstrate how it can help take the weight off stretched GP services, and will be doing all we can to ensure the success of the project so that our CCG then looks to expanding it into other areas where the GP surgeries are struggling to cope.” Hazel Smith, NHS Cumbria CCG’s Primary Care Development Lead, said:

“I can now supply a wider range of medication than the standard minor ailments service including those only available with a prescription once I have carried out a clinical assessment.” Gareth’s area of expertise is “acute illness in primary care” so he can prescribe medicines to treat a range of minor conditions. Some of the drugs he regularly prescribes include: amoxicillin for tooth ache; flucloxacillin for infected insect bites; and trimethoprim for urinary tract infection (UTIs). There have also been instances where Gareth’s independent prescriber status has really helped a patient. For example, Gareth says: “Last month a health visitor had told a young patient’s mother to visit the pharmacy and purchase hydrocortisone as she couldn’t prescribe it due to prescribing restrictions. I couldn’t sell it as it’s not licensed in children under 10 years so normally, the patient would have seen two healthcare professionals but would still need to be referred to their GP. In this case, I was able to prescribe the cream for the child, making mum happy.”

“Enabling the pharmacist to link together with GP practices is a great step forward; improves the information available about the patient for everyone Listen to Gareth Jones in the Local involved in their care and allows the pharmacist to prescribe medication safely and legally. Working together Pharmacy Innovation Theatre on and sharing information has huge benefits for the patient Sunday 18th October from 16:00-16:30 DCP_UK_Convenience Store_quarter page_February 17, 2015_v3.pdf 1 2/17/2015 8:26:41 AM and GP practices and is the way forward in the future.”

PHP offers a selection of tools and resources that aim to benefit pharmacists by enhancing the patient experience, and supporting professional development.

Supporting Professional Development

The PHP On-Demand learning and skills development training modules are designed to help equip pharmacy with the skills needed to move forward with their changing role, which in turn could help achieve better patient outcomes: ‘Confident Conversations’ The ‘Confident Conversations’ On-Demand training modules are accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. They aim to stimulate thinking and are dedicated to examining and practising soft skills tools for effective communication with patients and colleagues. Pain Training Pfizer Healthy Partnerships aims to support pharmacy teams in these consultations with the pain-specific resources that are available on Access Pfizer. Indispensable Leadership Skills This On-Demand module is dedicated to examining and

practising soft skills tools for leadership development. The areas that are covered include ‘Top Tips’ on identifying leadership behaviours and principles of good communication.

Enhancing the Patient Experience

Through Pfizer Healthy Partnerships, Pfizer helps pharmacies provide a ‘quality patient experience’ with toolkits and resources for you and support materials for your patients: The Right Time for Right Route: Right Care The ‘Right Route: Right Care’ campaign has been endorsed by Pharmacy Voice. It aims to support pharmacy teams in encouraging the public to make the most effective use of their local NHS services. Medicines Optimisation Scratch Card Campaign This campaign focuses on raising public awareness of pharmacy services that support and advise patients on how to get the best from their medicines. By doing this, the campaign hopes to improve patient adherence to medicines, which in turn could help health outcomes. Smoking Cessation Scratch Card Campaign The Smoking Cessation Scratch Card campaign aims to encourage smokers to proactively seek smoking cessation advice and facilitates the identification of the specific needs of each patient. It may also provide opportunities to engage patients in pharmacy services.

Making care home medication supply profitable By moving towards OPD pharmacies can significantly reduce costs whilst improving medication control to service users. As pharmacies come under increasing cost pressure their care home clients are becoming even more demanding. Inspections by CQC, and NHS pressure to reduce wastage, are driving the need to provide much greater control and accurate, flexible reporting. The development of a genuine ‘easy to use’ electronic MAR system has given pharmacies and care homes the

confidence to implement electronic systems with total confidence. Sigcare (part of Sigma Pharmaceuticals) are one of many pharmacies installing eMARx into their care home client base. Commented Hatul Shah, Sigcare Director, ‘We searched the market for a system that gave us total confidence. By using advanced bar code technology we can replace MDS with OPD. The cost savings are massive.’

Breast milk provides babies with the best source of nourishment. Infant formula milk and follow on milks are intended to be used when babies cannot be breast-fed. The decision to discontinue breast feeding may be difficult to reverse and the introduction of partial bottlefeeding may reduce breast milk supply. The financial benefits of breast feeding should be considered before bottle feeding is initiated. Failure to follow preparation instructions carefully may be harmful to a baby’s health. Infant formula and follow up milks should be used only on the advice of a healthcare professional.
