The Pharmacy Show Network
Pre-show newspaper - September 2016
AT A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY, DON’T MISS THE MOST IMPORTANT PHARMACY SHOW TO DATE If Brexit, category M, funding cuts, policy changes, keeping up to date with new opportunities and the vision of a new clinical integrated primary care service concern you, then the Pharmacy Show on the 25th and 26th of September at the NEC, Birmingham is the place to get the answers. We have heard from Dr Keith Ridge, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer at NHS England that ‘community pharmacy is a vital part of the healthcare system’. I suspect that for many community pharmacy owners it may not feel like this. Dr Ridge also talks about an unprecedented demand in clinical pharmacy and the increasing range of new opportunities within care homes and GP practices. And within this we hear of a clinical vision for community pharmacy with integration so community pharmacy becomes a genuine part of the NHS. With this in mind we are all eagerly awaiting the publication of a Community Pharmacy View for 2016-17 and beyond.
SHOW HIGHLIGHTS • LIVE INJECTION & CPR TRAINING • EXCLUSIVE ON STAND ORDERS • ‘HOW TO SEMINARS’ IN THE BUSINESS ACADEMY • QUESTION TIME PANEL WITH EXPERTS
ALL REVEALED INSIDE the chance to listen to Alistair Buxton from the PSNC, Claire Ward and Rob Darracott from Pharmacy Voice, Ian Strachan from the NPA, John Murphy from the PDA and Sandra Gidley from the RPS. I am sure that they all have their own view on what Mr Mowat MP, the new Health Minister should do. It is such a massive shame that the new minister is ‘unavailable’ to address the profession and offer confidence and comfort for their future.
So things may be a little ‘up in the air’ at the moment – even more reason to visit the The Pharmacy Show.
The NHS is short of cash – there is no doubt about that. Hospitals are full and overspent and GP practices are bursting at the seams. So what is the plan to better engage pharmacists? Discussions about strategy have stopped and NHS England is full steam ahead with the implementation of the 5 year forward view. We have finished the consultation on the Community Pharmacy Forward View and are eagerly waiting its publication. Why not listen to Jill Loader the assistant head of primary care commissioning discussing the commissioning landscape on Monday and Anne Joshua, the Head of Community Pharmacy Strategy talking about the Pharmacy Integration Fund.
After delivering the largest health petition in UK history – the support your local pharmacy campaign, you may want to understand what is next? With a change in Prime Minister and most of the health team the final decision has been delayed. In the Keynote Theatre you have
Last year Kirit Patel, CEO of Day Lewis made a big impact within his session and we are delighted that Jay and Sam Patel, both Directors at Day Lewis, will be continuing Kirit’s session.. Kirit will be sadly missed, but we can make sure that his legacy to pharmacy lives on.
We must not be complacent. The ‘Right Care’ agenda is surging ahead identifying variation in practice and patient outcomes. This is linking in with medicines optimisation. I am sure that at some point in time it will turn its attention to community pharmacy looking at variation in service delivery, the outcomes in local communities and value for money. One might suggest that variation has been both a strength and a weakness of community pharmacy and the increasing dispensing workload may swamp the opportunity for clinical service delivery.

GPs and pharmacists – working together in practice and in communities How can GPs and pharmacists – and community pharmacies – work together as one profession? As NHS England continues the roll out of the £31m clinical pharmacists in general practice pilot, this will be the big question that GPs, pharmacists and patients will want to see answered as the pilot progresses past the recruitment stage and as practice pharmacists build their practice-based skills. At the start of the clinical pharmacists in general practice pilot, NHS England predicted that surgery patients could expect their practice pharmacist to deliver extra help with their long-term conditions, and give specific advice, particularly when multiple medications are involved, and offer more access to clinical advice on treatments. Delegates visiting the 2016 Pharmacy Show will find that across all the conference education streams many different aspects of the GP practice pharmacist role are explored – from the general political vision for the pilot, as a medium for delivering new models of care – to the commercial opportunities for practices and communities.Without doubt, the presentation in the Keynote Theatre by Dr Graham Stretch, Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Ealing GP Federation and Ravi Sharma, Head of Primary Care Integration and Lead Clinical GP Pharmacist at NHS England, will be a key conference talking point. After hearing the presentation by Nick Hunter, Chief Officer for Nottinghamshire, Doncaster and Rotherham LPCs and Cathy Quinn, from Newark & Sherwood CCG in PSNC’s Pharmacy Services Innovation Theatre, community pharmacy teams will also understand the opportunities ahead in terms of achieving the ambition of truly joint patient management. At this year’s Pharmacy Show, a dedicated area – the GP Practice Pharmacy Hub - will be set up for GPs, pharmacists and support team members to get together to discuss specific opportunities in general practice pharmacy. As well as offering some insight into the GP perspective of a practice based clinical pharmacist, the hub aims to supply delegates
It’s World Pharmacists Day on Sunday and what better way to celebrate than by attending the Show! Bring your team, tell your peers and let’s enjoy the perfect setting to celebrate the profession.

CONTINUING KIRIT’S LEGACY Jay and Sam Patel, Keynote Theatre, Sunday, 16:45 – 17.30
Described by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as a “giant of independent community pharmacy” and the “go to man” by another leading industry figure, Kirit was the person whose opinion was sought by everyone, including those in Government. In 1975, with his brother JC, he founded and subsequently grew the Day Lewis Group to almost 300 Pharmacies, which became not only an employer of choice, but the recipient of many Pharmacy Awards as well as Gold Investor in People status.
undergraduates in his acceptance speech: “Respect and care for people, aspire to achieve the impossible, create a network of support and never stop learning”. Since the sudden passing of Kirit Patel MBE in July, the industry has been united in honouring an outstanding ambassador of Pharmacy as well as a great family man. Kirit touched many lives and left a legacy that will endure forever.
This year, the awards are bigger than ever before, and are brought to you in association with The Pharmacy Show, where the winners will be announced. These accolades are designed to recognise your true hero products; the natural healthcare treatments, remedies and supplements that are proving particularly successful in independent pharmacies, across a variety of categories.
Voting is open now at www.naturalpharmacybusiness.com/awards. You will also be able to place your vote and come away with a free goody bag at the Natural Pharmacy Business stand (PG15) at the first day of The Pharmacy Show. Your winners will be announced in the VIP lounge on the second day of the show.
In continuing Kirit’s legacy, his children and existing Day Lewis directors, Jay and Sam Patel, will talk publicly for the first time since his demise. They will openly share their learnings from Kirit, outline their future vision for Day Lewis and discuss their roles going forwards.
Kirit was a firm believer in continual learning. He achieved an MBA from Westminster University, attained a Diploma in Philosophy from Brighton University and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Wharton. Only recently, in July, Kirit was awarded an Ash Soni OBE will be interviewing Jay and Sam Honorary Doctorate at Bath University and during this session. It is a session not to be he shared his business ethos to the assembled missed.

AT A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY - DON’T MISS THE MOST IMPORTANT PHARMACY SHOW TO DATE Continued from main article of page 1. The Pharmacy Business Academy is back and includes a panel discussing the implications of Brexit on UK pharmacy and presentations from two leading lights in GP practice pharmacy on how community pharmacists and General Practice pharmacists can work together. With impending funding cuts it is worth looking at alternative revenue streams.
WHEN AND WHERE
The future is clinical so the PSNC Pharmacy Services Innovation Theatre and the Clinically Focused Care Theatre might give you some great ideas on what is possible. It includes a session on how pharmacy needs to change to work with new models of care and a whole host of new and innovative clinical services within community pharmacy. Everyone knows that the pharmacist is one of the most underused resources within the NHS, but it is only going to be the pharmacists that lead this change.
Sunday 25th & Monday 26th September, Hall 4, NEC Birmingham (B40 1NT)
Everyone is talking about GP Practice based pharmacists and the new GP Practice Pharmacy Hub will be a big attraction this year. With half of all GP practices expecting to contract clinical pharmacy services or employ their own pharmacists this will provide lots of opportunities for career development and contracted services. You need to hear from the experts who will describe the expanding role of practice pharmacists, the relationship between community pharmacy and General Practice and other new areas for co-operation such as care homes and polypharmacy.

GPs and pharmacists – working together in practice and in communities Continued from main article of page 1. Topics covered in the hub will include the management of patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and atrial fibrillation, as well as those taking multiple medications or looking to quit smoking. There will also be a chance for delegates to explore the business opportunities available to the practice based pharmacist, for example, when caring for patients in a care home. Much has been said about the impact of GP practice pharmacy on the existing community pharmacy network. Community pharmacists and their teams attending the show will no doubt be keen to understand how they can work with GP pharmacists to best effect. On the first day of the show, in the GP Practice Pharmacy Hub, Helen Kilminster, a GP pharmacist from NHS Worcestershire CCG, and Marianne Martin, from the West Midlands commissioning hub, will be on hand to explain the road ahead.

Are you a pharmacy Technician? If you answered yes to this question, then this article is for you. Have you heard of the Association of PharmacyTechnicians (UK) (APTUK)? Whether you answered yes or no, please come along to our stand and find out about the many healthcare changes and initiatives that are specifically relevant for pharmacy technicians. As we all know one of the most profound changes came upon us on Thursday 23rd June 2016 when Britain voted for Brexit; the British exit from the European Union (EU). We don’t know as yet how this will affect us as citizens or how this will impact on pharmacy. What we do know though is that the regulation of medicines and medical devices is within EU legislation, which provides harmonised regulation of medicines across the member states. So, how does this currently work and what will it mean? The UK is part of the centralised authorisation system, operated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Pharmaceutical companies, when seeking marketing authorisation for medicines, are able to submit a single application to the EMA which then applies to the EU and other European Free Trade countries. The UKs Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MRHA) looks at marketing authorisations for medicines and devices to be used in the UK only.
emphasis will be on public health and disease prevention. As pharmacies become ‘the first point of contact’ for minor ailments and long term conditions where do pharmacy technicians fit into this vision?
For clinical trials, although currently managed nationally, harmonised regulations across the EU were due to come into play in 2018. This was aiming to give a single point of entry to companies wishing to carry out clinical trials of new medicines. It is too early to say what will happen, except that the EMA is currently based in London and reports are suggesting that relocation will be required with Brexit meaning uncertainties and potential future complexities. What implications this will have on clinical trials remains to be seen, however some pharmaceutical companies have raised concerns that this could mean the UK missing out on some clinical trials if not part of this future harmonised system. Much to keep our eye on and how it will affect pharmacy practice.
APTUK suggests and emphasises that pharmacy technicians have a role to play in supporting these services, as professionals who are an integral part of medicines optimisation and medicines supply. Pharmacy technicians are already helping patients by supporting many of the locally commissioned community enhanced services, such as smoking cessation, care home medicine supplies, weight management, out of hours services etc, delivered in the pharmacy to improve the public’s health and well being. APTUK are also delighted that pharmacy technicians, along with pharmacists, now have access to a patient’s Summary Care Records to help them provide safer care and to help reduce avoidable medication errors.
There are many other changes that we are also mindful of. Last year NHS England launched a £15million scheme to fund and employ pharmacists in GP surgeries, APTUK, your professional leadership body asks, what can pharmacy technicians do to support the general practice and community teams? What part will pharmacy technicians play in improving patient care, particularly those already working in and with GP practices? As both financial and clinical challenges continue to affect an over stretched NHS along with an ageing and growing population, it is recognised that greater
As the professional leadership body for pharmacy technicians, APTUK have been representing the profession at a number of events looking at how all the healthcare professions can work as part of an integrated system that is easy to use by patients and that makes the best use of all resources.
If you are reading this article, it’s very likely that you are already committed to professional development and excellence. APTUK are proud to be a partner of the Pharmacy Show as it offers access to free cutting edge CPD opportunities helping you to be professionally the best that you can be. Come and visit stand PH82 where you will find your ‘professional leadership’ body, the representatives of the pharmacy technician profession. We’re looking forward to seeing there. Public Health roles in Pharmacy Pfizer Healthy Partnerships Pharmacies need to take bold and urgent action on public health. Continuing challenges facing the health and care system during 2015-16 provide a timely impetus for Pharmacy Show visitors to fine-tune their public health advice skills. Demographic change, in particular the challenges of an ageing population; rising public expectations, particularly over the opportunities presented by new technologies; and the fiscal challenge of reconciling rising demand with finite resources conspire to place increasing emphasis on healthy lifestyles that prevent disease or mitigate the impact of existing conditions. Smoking cessation, flu vaccination, safe sex, responsible alcohol consumption and weight management are all well documented public health strategies. But achieving behavioural changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle and which prevent disease is not easy – old habits die hard. Social factors affecting particular population groups may make public health messages hard to hear. For some newer public health challenges, for example, childhood obesity, services may not yet widely be available. Summing up the challenge ahead for purveyors of public health will be the presentation entitled,‘Take the small steps to better health’. This is delivered this year in the Pharmacy Show’s Public Health & Wellbeing Forum by Philips Personal Health. At the 2016 Pharmacy Show, taking place at the Birmingham NEC on September 25-26, there is a key focus of attention on public health. And, with their established position and reach into local communities – often into patients’ homes - community pharmacies are ideally located to take public health messages to the population in a form in which it will be heard. Thanks to its expanded format, the Pharmacy Show’s Public Health & Wellbeing Forum is able to offer visitors unprecedented access to the very best practical advice and thought-leadership in public health. Sessions this year see practising community pharmacists share their first-hand advice for delivering services such as smoking cessation, as well as overcoming the practical challenges of running health and wellbeing clinics in the pharmacy. Experts will tackle the big issue of the day, and will show how to establish good nutritional habits from the start of a child’s life, while key opinion leaders in public health will give useful updates on the current political imperatives including the healthy living pharmacy and diabetes prevention programmes. Business-orientated sessions including a focus on Coldzyme – a new treatment for colds - as well as screening for atrial fibrillation will explain the commercial benefits for pharmacies that get more involved in public health.
Visit the Public Health and Wellbeing forum! The full programme can be found on page 13.

Recent consumer research conducted by GSK found that 56% of people in the UK feel that body pain compromises their ability to participate in physical activities they like.1 Voltarol® 12 Hour Emulgel® P 2.32% Gel contains diclofenac diethylammonium and offers effective pain relief without a tablet. A morning and evening application can offer all day relief from joint pain.2-5 In the UK it is estimated that 15-20% of children and 2-10% of adults are affected by atopic eczema.6 Oilatum Cream (light liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin) is clinically tested to significantly reduce itching for up to 8 hours (study conducted in healthy adults with dry, itchy skin) 7 and is formulated to help restore the skin barrier and break the itch-scratch cycle for customers with eczema and related dry skin conditions. Adults and children* experience 2-4 and 3-8 colds a year8, respectively. Day & Night Nurse® offers powerful 24-hour** relief from cold & flu symptoms – nothing is stronger for cold & flu.9 Ahead of the show you are welcome to pre-arrange a meeting with your dedicated GSK representative or alternatively contact David Healey – david.j.healey@ gsk.com.

• • •
Customers need to ensure more information is identified and disclosed Brokers will ask more questions about your business and your risk Insurers have new guidelines about cancelling a policy
You will have to give yourselves more time to gather all the newly-required details, especially for renewals. Insurance should no longer be arranged at the last minute. What you should do now:
• • •
Check the renewal dates of all your commercial insurance policies Commence the renewal process earlier to allow extra time for info gathering Challenge your provider to explain how they are embracing the changes

Imutest has developed and markets a range of point-of-care/self-test kits for allergy which cover the most common environmental and food allergens. These offer simple-to-do tests using a small finger prick sample of blood with results in 30 mins … results with Imutest correlate very well with results using the ‘goldstandard’ laboratory IgE method (Phadia’s ImmunoCAP). When you know what is causing your allergy symptoms, you can then take the necessary steps (medication and/ or avoidance measures) to reduce your exposure to the offending allergen. Imutest allergy test kits have CE Mark approval for selftesting, so they can either be purchased by the patient for testing themselves in the privacy of their own home, or can be used by a healthcare professional (e.g. private doctor, retail pharmacist, nutritionist, homeopath, etc) as part of a service to the patient in a non-laboratory setting. Imutest kits offer the following features: • easy to perform • require just 50ul blood sample from finger prick • reliable results available within 30 mins • based on a patented technology More information about the tests can be found on Stand No PF9 or on our website at http://www.imutest.com
