INVEST IN STAFF – EMPOWER & EDUCATE In an increasingly challenging and competitive market, it’s the quality of pharmacy staff that will give businesses the competitive edge and secure long term success, says Kirit Patel, founder and CEO of the Day Lewis group.

“Community pharmacy is changing. The old days were about dispensing prescriptions, but the future is all about service, and only those pharmacies with skilled and empowered staff will succeed,” says Kirit Patel. He should know. As the founder and CEO of Day Lewis, the largest independently owned pharmacy chain in Europe, Kirit has grown the group from a single site in 1975 to an estate of 195, employing some 1,500 staff. The secret of the group’s success, he says, is quite simply the quality of its people. “There’s more competition out there than ever before thanks to the internet and the supermarkets, so you can’t expect customers to stay loyal. You have to go that extra mile. You have to focus on and invest in staff,” he says. As community pharmacy moves increasingly into service delivery, pharmacists will have to ensure that both they and their staff acquire a new set of skills, learning how to engage with patients, making them feel comfortable and at ease. And that’s true for all pharmacies, regardless of size, says Kirit. “If you want to build a chain you need to do a lot of training and empowerment, but even if you’re a single pharmacy employing five people, you still need to ensure that your staff develop the soft skills so they can deliver the very best service.” Supported by

GB Olympian Derek Redmond to address pharmacy technicians APTUK to stage Diamond Jubilee conference at PS12 APTUK celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and are very excited to be holding their annual conference in conjunction with The Pharmacy Show, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham. President, Steve Acres, will open the conference on Saturday 30th September, followed by a varied educational programme, ranging from what happens when a Technician inspector calls, healthy living pharmacies, the new medicines service, drug misuse – Olympics 2012, communicating with patients, drug related deaths, developing education and practice supervision in pharmacy, ending with an inspirational talk by retired Olympic athlete Derek Redmond.

Answer: First of all, you should reassure Liz that hot flushes are extremely common during the menopause. They are a natural result of the hormonal changes that are going on in her body, and she shouldn’t feel embarrassed. However, the transition through the menopause can take a couple of years, so hot flushes are unlikely to disappear overnight on their own. Suggest Liz could try Menoforce Sage Tablets. Containing extract of fresh organically cultivated Sage, Menoforce is a traditional herbal medicine used to relieve excess sweating associated with the menopausal hot flushes, including night sweats based on traditional use only. Calling all pharmacy assistants. In an industry first, The Pharmacy Show is launching a free education workshop specifically designed for all Over The Counter (OTC) staff at this year’s event. Facilitators from Reckitt Benckiser and CIG will be on hand throughout the workshop to provide advice and guidance, and the emphasis will be on having fun as well as learning. Afterwards, delegates will have the opportunity to help shape their future education by voting on what and how they learn in future. “People learn in different ways. Reckitt Benckiser has been providing training for more than 20 years; running lecture tours around the country and providing brochures etc. Whilst providing regular ongoing learning and development for pharmacy support staff and CPD for pharmacists has been the main focus of Training Matters and Pharmacy Magazine,” says Trevor. With today’s pharmacies being open for longer hours and pharmaceutical companies cutting back on the education they offer, getting access to training can be difficult. But launching this new educational workshop at The Pharmacy Show is an ideal opportunity to engage with pharmacy assistants and find out how they want their education to be delivered in the future, whether that’s online, via workshops or printed material,” he says. Lesley Johnson, director of training at CIG, says training pharmacy assistants is vital. “It’s a fact that more people visit a pharmacy than their GP; it’s the first port of call for healthcare in this country. Pharmacy assistants play a hugely important role in educating the customer, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they are trained to perform that role.”

Clinical & Services Forum 1 & 2 Due to popular demand, The Pharmacy Show will have 2 theatres dedicated to providing a combination of clinical and service related topics.
