By Neidi Calvillo Hello! I am sad and happy at the same time!!! I am sad that my term has come to an end! However, I am happy that I am passing the club’s leadership down to a very responsible person. That person is Lilly Duran. She will be the 2019-20 Cloverdale President. I see great things coming from her, and I hope that she will enjoy her term! I know I wasn’t the best, but I tried my best, and that is what matters. I have learned so many things from being club president. I hope to see the club grow and I am happy that I was able to lead you all this past year!

By Lilly Duran The experiences I’ve had this past Key Club year have helped shape my excitement for taking over as your new Key Club President. One of my goals for the new year is help our club achieve Diamond Distinguished at next year’s DCON. Last year we were able to reach that goal, which is not a small feat. But, I know we can do it again! (I now know the magic key to making it happen – plain and simple – our club’s service record). We need to AVERAGE 5 hours of service each month, per member! Another goal that I have for the new year is to get more members to participate. Last year, there were many sign-ups for activities, but members didn’t always follow through. Some members don’t attend meetings and how can they even know what to do or how to help when they aren’t at the meetings? Some members sign-up and then back out and don’t show up. I plan to improve this record because I want to help members feel like they have more say in the decisions about what projects we do. I am very excited to be your new President, and I hope we have an amazing year!

Member of the Month Mem

6

Our Member of the Month for March was Miranda Boyrie. She participated in 7 club activities. She was at every HUGS project each week, playing bingo with the patients at the HealthCare Center. She played freerice.com to supply rice to third-world countries through the United Nations. Miranda also sold See’s to raise money for DCON and for service activities. She also attended a Kiwanis meeting.

Officer of the Month

During March, our Officer of the Month was Alexis Sanchez. She participated in 10 club events. She also worked very hard on our scrapbook, putting in about 40 hours on the project during the month. She was one of our members at the Kiwanis MidYear Conference; and she went ice skating with the division. Alexis also helped with a HUGS Project at the convalescent hospital, played freerice.com, and she attended a Kiwanis meeting!

DCON By Lizet Barrera DCON 2019 was an amazing experience! I had never been to an actual convention before and meeting all those people made me so happy. I also enjoyed the sessions because they were really helpful and provided a lot of information on a number of different subjects. Specifically, the Treasurer’s session gave me an understanding of what is to be expected in this coming year. The dress code was something I wasn’t sure about at the beginning, but in the end, I enjoyed dressing professionally and looking classy! Overall, DCON was worth the time and energy; and I’m very glad that I went!

DCON By Danielle Neustadt In early April we went to Ontario, California for DCON 2019. It was super cool to be surrounded by so many other Key Clubbers and to see how other clubs function and to find out about the strategies they use. On top of going to the convention and meeting a bunch of people; our Cloverdale group got really close. We all enjoyed each other’s company. I went to sessions about time management, editing, how to engage your parents with Key Club and many group activities. I learned a lot and met a ton of people; and it was an amazing experience that I would definitely recommend to others; and I will go again!

DCON By Alexis Sanchez One of my most favorite sessions at DCON was one called, “Through the Positive Looking Glass”. In that session I learned: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

You don’t need to be an officer to be a leader “But” is a negative word Don’t be a CRAB! Be a DOLPHIN – cheerful and free A positive mindset is always better Appreciate yourself Show gratitude to others Keep personal and professional relationships separate Go above and beyond “BEE” extra, open and expressive Remember that “how you say it” comes across more strongly that “what you say” Take the chance to meet new people Pay attention to others

DCON By Lilly Duran DCON by far has been one of the best Key Club events I have gone to this year. We had many opportunities to meet new people and do numerous activities. There were so many different workshops you could go to. One I liked was, “How to Deal with Criticism”. There were workshops for incoming officers, and I attended a couple that made sense for my new position. Along with the workshops, there was the House of Delegates, where two people from each club were able to vote for a new District Governor, Secretary and Treasurer. I am excited to go to DCON next year; and I really hope to see a whole lot of our members fundraising to be there, too!

DCON By Miguel Gonzalez From April 12-15, our club went to District Convention and to Disneyland. It was an incredibly fun experience to be able to meet new people, connect with others, and take part in voting. However, this year felt completely different than last year's DCON. As an LTGelect I got to go a day early and meet all the other LTG-elects! The Region 15-elects, Taryn and I, ended up making friends with all the Region 7-elects. As a delegate this year, I was also able to listen to the candidate speeches and vote on the new District Board. I have so much more to say about the experience, but it would take a long time to explain it all. Overall, DCON this year was a blast; and I can't wait to return next year!

AWARDS Kayla Gallego – Received a medal for Member of the Year! She put together a 50-page document showcasing her efforts as a “non-officer” and a dedicated member of the club. Out of the 35,000 members in Key Club, only 8 members were on stage to receive this recognition!

Alexis Sanchez – Traditional Year in Review- She put together a 96-page scrapbook entitled, “The Wonderful World of Disney Through the Eyes of Key Club”. Each page identified a club activity and related it to a Disney movie. For example: our “Elemonate Challenge” done for Eliminate Week was compared to Disney’s movie, Lemonade Mouth! Ours was the only scrapbook identified as Distinguished and it goes on to International competition in July!

Lilly Duran – Single Service Project – She did a 102-page write up about our Save the Rain Project. Only one club was recognized with the honor of being named Distinguished. Lilly’s document describing our club’s project will be entered in International competition this coming July!

Miguel Gonzalez – Distinguished Website. Alex Visconti is also responsible to our club’s website. It was judged over a 5-month time period, from late October to early February. One factor that favored strongly in the judging was club use of the site. We’ve worked hard to make sure the site is used by our members as a main tool for communication! Only 3 websites in the tri-state district were recognized as Distinguished!

Rowan Addison – Distinguished Newsletters – Kayla Gallego assisted with the creation of the newsletters, but Rowan completed the application for recognition, and was our main Newsletter Editor this past year. Rowan had to showcase three of our newsletters for the judges. It was judged on everything from use of themes, inclusion of Key Club projects beyond the local level, depth of coverage, use of graphics standards, newsletter format, content and timeliness of topics, and of course, creativity!

We’re fundraising in front of Ray’s to take money to the annual March for Babies. The money we raise will be used for research to help lower the rate of premature births. Right now, our U.S. rate is one of the highest in the world! Premature babies are born with problems that often last a lifetime. Sometimes, it can be something like a tendency to form allergies; sometimes it’s much more serious. Our goal is to fundraise a couple of hundred dollars before May 11th! March of Dimes and the annual March for Babies is a “Preferred Charity” for Key Club International, which means that we are joining thousands of Key Clubbers across the globe who are ALL doing projects to support this cause!

The “Heart of a Hero” is the Kiwanis Governor, Rocci Barsotti’s, theme for this Kiwanis year. The Robert Young Estate Winery is nestled in the hills near Geyserville and is an absolutely beautiful location for the Governor’s Visit. It is a celebration of the Division 32 past year’s Kiwanis service. Key Clubbers are needed to help serve food. Key Clubbers should dress nicely. It’s a lot of fun, and a chance to do more with our Kiwanis; and to find out more about the Kiwanis passion for service.

Sunday, May 19th; meet at CHS at 10 a.m.

FOCUS FRIDAYS We are trying something new to see if we can find a way to help our members meet the Key Club International guideline of doing at least 5 hours in service each month. Only 18% our members met the 5 hours per month goal last year. So let’s see how we can do better as we start a new year with Key Club! We are going to open Room 1 every Friday at lunchtime for members to come in and do hands-on service projects. As long as members show up immediately, they’ll get one hour of service logged into their record. If they don’t show up right away, they can still get ½ hour recorded. It’ll be fun, so please come in and do service! We’ll play music, have a provided snack and get to do some good for the world! Members are encouraged to bring their friends. Projects each week will vary according to what is needed most at any particular time. For example, on May 17th we’ll be doing bracelets and making graduation leis; but on May 24 th, it will be our monthly Shine Day with the Special Day Class.
