A Message from the Club President By George Deibert Spring is here and we are in the midst of a fundraiser; and we are also continuing our hands-on project volunteering. The fundraiser is based on a present of corporate gift cards from a dedicated member, Versie Meyer. We’re half-way to our goal of turning them all into $dollars$ for Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp. Thank you, members, for your work on this! Meanwhile, we remain dedicated to the Packed With Pride and Good Neighbor Center organizations, with our food–related efforts to help their missions. I’m hopeful we can continue this work throughout the spring and summer seasons. If you haven’t been to a club meeting in a while, please try to set aside a Wednesday lunchtime to join us.

… to George, our Club President. He is an inspiration to all of us!

By Sue Cummins No organization can function well without dedicated leadership. In the Kiwanis world, elections for a new Board occur in the Spring of every year. It’s that time, again. We have so much to be thankful for… as George and the others on our Board have excellently served us two years in a row. But now, it is time for “the changing of the guard”! Positions that are currently vacant for the 2022-23 year are President, President-Elect, Vice President and Secretary. The Kiwanis service year for the 2022-23 term will begin on October 1st. With so many positions open, and only a small group of dedicated members, it may be difficult to fill these positions, especially since some of us may feel inadequate to performing these crucial jobs! But, we can’t continue to ask the same people, who have already served us so diligently, to do them… again! So, what is the solution? I am not sure, but I think it might be for us to, “think outside the box.” For example, maybe we need to have two people serve as Co-Presidents. The position might feel less daunting to members if they share the role. Or maybe we need to eliminate the Vice Presidency, giving us one less position to fill. Or maybe we need to figure out ways to increase our membership numbers, thereby enlarging our pool of potential officers. Whatever we do, it may require change from the way we have been operating. Meanwhile, we’ve got an upcoming election to run, with a need for volunteers willing to take on some of our more crucial officer roles! So, what’s it going to be? Can you see yourself stepping up to one of those important leadership roles that are currently vacant? Can you see yourself giving it a try, even though it may seem like something you can’t envision being comfortable doing? Here is a quote that seems to be apropos, “You have to remain positive and just try your best and part of that is doing things that continually surprise people, including yourself.” (Yasmin Paige). We hope to determine the new officer positions by the beginning of May. Anyone interested in a particular position should notify George at: georgedeibert@gmail.com.

A Tribute to Dick Freer

Good Neighbor Center

4

By Robert Bell For over 25 years, our club has been providing meals each month at the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard, (which provides temporary residence and meals for homeless families with children). Dick Freer has been very involved in the planning and preparation of those meals for over 20 years. Tigard Kiwanis member Bruce Kaiser first got our club into preparing meals for the Good Neighbor Center. About 10 years ago Bruce began to slow down and Dick became more involved in the planning and preparation of the meals. For the last several years, Dick has been our club’s leader in planning and preparing two meals each month at the Good Neighbor Center. Twice each month Dick plans a dinner of spaghetti and meatballs for between 30-40 people residing at the Good Neighbor Center. Several of our club members are also involved in obtaining salads, bread and veggies for the meal, and in preparing the meals at the Center. Also, for the last several years, Sherwood High School Key Clubbers have worked with our Kiwanis members in preparing one meal a month at the Good Neighbor Center.

Packed with Pride Packed with Pride is celebrating its 2-year anniversary! Here is some information about the program that the staff recently shared with us.

By Mary Lewis At Packed With Pride, the staff and crew thank all the Kiwanis helpers, (members, spouses, and friends), who pick up supplies at Winco, (and sometimes other locations), and then deliver, weigh, and process those donations twice a week. Our efforts help ensure that family food boxes are ready every other Wednesday afternoon outside the original Tigard High School cafeteria.

By Frank Morehouse Versie Meyer invited the club to a social at the Courtyard Village Retirement Center on the fifth Wednesday of March, (March 30, 2022). It worked very nicely in replacement of a typical Wednesday meeting at the brewpub. Ten members and three guests attended the event. Lunch was good, but it was delayed, due to limited on-site staffing issues. The delay in getting lunch created an opportunity to socialize, which we all appreciated. One, “funny to us, but maybe not to Bill”, thing happened. He locked his keys in his car. To get the door open, his wife, Barbara responded, and ended up joining our social! What an unexpected, but nice addition!

Thanks to our club Treasurer, Mike McClain, our Board is reminded of them every month. Mike always places a quote of one object at the bottom of his Treasurer’s Report. It’s good to be reminded of what we value and why we are Kiwanians! ❖ To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. ❖ To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. ❖ To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. ❖ To develop by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. ❖ To provide through Kiwanis clubs a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. ❖ To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

The Objects of Kiwanis

When was the last time you thought about The Objects of Kiwanis?

Decisions made at the March Board Meeting include: ❖ A vote to write a check for $1000 to the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp o

The check will be presented to Skye Burns on April 6th

❖ A motion was approved to schedule a Salmon BBQ in either June or July to raise funds for the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program. The date of the event is still to be determined. o

Our budgeted amount for this cause, and this Kiwanis year, has already been donated. These funds will be raised to support the program for the next Kiwanis year’s budget!

Kiwanis Magazine "The March issue of Kiwanis magazine is digital-only! Here is the link: https://www.kiwanis.org/ news/kiwanismagazine

The rationale for going digital… “We’re in the middle of a pandemic and supply-chain issues continue. Paper is scarce. Shipping is slower than usual. Costs for production continue to increase. And all of this directly affects what we can do within our current publications budget. So, we decided to take this as an opportunity to test a digital-only issue.”

Kiwanis International Board Approves New Partnerships The Kiwanis International Board of Trustees recently approved two new partnerships for Kiwanis International. One new partner is the Little Free Library. This organization’s work has resulted in book-sharing boxes in more than 100 countries on all seven continents. LFL can equip, educate and guide Kiwanis clubs in establishing and stewarding Little Free Libraries in their communities. The second partner, Kids Gardening, is a nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for kids to play, learn and grow through gardening. Kids Gardening will produce an educational toolkit for clubs to design, implement and sustain gardens in their communities. For more information about our new partners, go to: https://www.kiwanis.org/partners.

PNW Kiwanis Mid-Winter Conference Videos The 2022 Mid-Winter Conference was a very successful and enjoyable event. The PNW District understands that not everyone is able to attend events live when they happen, so for Mid-Winter they are making the Zoom recordings available to watch on our schedule. We could also use them for programs at our club meetings. There are 15+ great educational sessions. Topics that were covered include: Our SLPs, Fundraising,

Welcoming New Members, Nurturing Existing Members, Successful Hybrid Meetings, Managing Conflict, Digital Public Relations, and more! The recordings are available on the PNW website for $50. https://kiwanispnw.org/mid-winter.html

A special THANK YOU to our dedicated LTG, Susie Meyer, for gathering all this information to share

Helping Clubs Recruit New Members Kiwanis International has produced a workbook titled, “Two For Two” — a new Kiwanis membership initiative. Two For Two offers Kiwanis clubs a simple concept for making member recruitment a permanent, ongoing part of our operations. The club assigns two club members per month to reach out to two prospects during that month. In fact, a club can plan ahead by selecting members and prospects for each of the next several months. Along with ideas for identifying prospects and tips for meeting with them, the workbook helps the club put its ideas and prospect list into one place. The workbook also includes 16 months of “prospect reports” that help keep track of each month’s prospects, assigned club members, progress status and more. How do we get a hold of this workbook? We have already received it via U.S. mail!

PNW District Auction The district has opted to do a couple of fundraisers to keep from raising membership dues. One of the fundraisers, is a district online auction being held April 29 – May 1. Help in putting together an auction package or two is appreciated. We can do this by putting together auction packages that showcase our community. What experiences in our community are special? Do we have a connection to get a free night or two in our town or a vacation home, combined with some excursion type experiences? Deadline to submit an auction package is April 15. For more information go to: https://kiwanispnw.org/online_auction.html. The auction website to join in the fun on April 29 – May 1 is: https://www.32auctions.com/PNWKauctions2022

Key Club LTG, Claire Sarnowski at our March 1st meeting Claire’s term of office ended at District Convention, held in Portland in mid-March. We wish to thank Claire for her strong, exemplary leadership this past Key Club year!

Introducing the 2022-2023 Division 64 Key Club Lt. Governor

Hello. My name is Tali Greenfeld. I am a current sophomore at Lakeridge High School. In my free time, I like to play tennis, act and hang out with friends. I am super excited to represent our division and to continue the amazing work Claire has been doing while increasing attendance, communication, and enthusiasm all around. Also, if you want to get on my good side, chocolate and pickles are always a good way to start! By early March, PNW Key Clubs were able to provide a total of 51,932 meals to families in the Pacific Northwest through fundraising, food drives, and service. The district was 8,068 meals, (the equivalent of $2,689.33), away from their goal of 60,000 meals. The goal was to be reached by the end of their District Convention weekend, which was March 11-13.

We can end hunger one helping at a time!

HELP

END

HUNGER By Sue Cummins The 2021-2022 Pacific Northwest Key Club District Project was the Help End Hunger initiative. The goal for this District Project was to provide Key Clubbers and Kiwanians with the resources, knowledge, and inspiration to make an impact in their local communities. Since the District Project wasn’t partnering with one specific organization, every Key Clubber had the opportunity to directly impact their own community. Claire Sarnowski, our own Division 64 Lt. Governor, was the District Chairperson for this project. It was wonderful to recently host her at one of our Kiwanis club meetings, and to hear her passion about this project. She has worked countless hours to prepare resources regarding food banks in need of help; and she spearheaded the attempt to reach the goal of PNW Key Clubs providing 60,000 meals to those in need!

By Robert Bell The students eligible for scholarships are Sherwood HS Key Club members who are Seniors. The applications are available at the Sherwood HS Career Center. Those applying need to submit their applications by May 2, 2022. While the applicants’ scholastic accomplishments are considered, the scholarships are awarded principally in recognition of community service rendered by the applicants. We advise the applicants of our decision by approximately May 31st. The funds for the scholarships come from income of our Tigard Kiwanis Endowment Trust. This year we have about $4,500 available for funding scholarships. We may, or may not, expend all the funds available. The Endowment Trust was formed in 1981. Since then, members of our club have made contributions to the Endowment Trust. The Trust expends its income, not its principal. The assets of the Trust are managed in a brokerage account by one of our members who is a securities broker.

By Sheila Udman On Thursday, March 17th, four members of our club met with seven members of the Sherwood High School Key Club for a clean-up project at the school. After procuring bags, gloves and grabbers, we all set out to clean up one of the school parking lots, and surrounding areas. After an hour or two of hard work, we all gathered back together to collect our several bags of trash; and we enjoyed some yummy St. Patrick’s Day treats to end our day.

By Marlene Wilson As Sherwood High School begins its third trimester, and the end of the school year approaches, we are preparing for our new officers. Our elections have already begun, and our voting process will be starting very soon. A couple of our current officers are interested in running next year as well, which is great that we can have some leaders who have already had experience on the officer team. This year, in general, was a hugely thought-provoking experience for both me, personally, and our club as-a-whole. Covid 19 challenged us to restructure almost everything; and in the end, I think we came out better. We were able to find opportunities for service that we had never considered before. We rekindled a volunteer relationship with the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge; and we were able to bring our club membership from an empty Zoom meeting to a bustling, crowded room. I am glad that we have kept our long-time tradition of having cookies at our meetings; and I am also happy that this year, we have introduced monthly raffles and will be having an end of the year raffle basket drawing! I have always been attracted to Key Club’s warm atmosphere that encourages genuine volunteering over just collecting hours for attractive scholarships. When I graduate this year and continue my education at PCC, I am certain that my relationship with the Kiwanis organization will also continue to grow. I hope to encourage this enthusiasm for Kiwanis service with our Key Club members until my term ends in a couple months!
