Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. -

We hope you are willing to find the joy in service by sticking with us in the coming months. The Cali-Nev-Ha district has a goal set that EVERY member do at least 50 hours of service in a year. We know that’s WAY more than the 15 hours required by our school district. But, we think you can do it! And, if you try, we think you’ll be glad you challenged yourself to do MORE!
Atziry Rodriguez Hello, my name is Atziry Rodriguez and I am a CHS Key Club Co-President; and I just wanted to say that I am so grateful to be serving you in my final and 3rd year in Key Club. These past few months have been filled with excitement, laughter, new faces and fun! For example, I was glad to attend my second Awake-A-Thon with my club buddies and with the rest of the division. It was fun staying up all night, having deep conversations with others; meeting new people and just bonding with one another was great! It’s too bad that was my last Awake-AThon, but I made the best of it. If you guys didn't go this year, i totally recommend you going next year and every year that you can, while you are in the club. Fall Rally is coming up this weekend, October 22, 2016 to be exact. This event will take place at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo California and I am very excited to be going! I hope to see you all there! Remember to wear purple and gold spirit attire, along with your division tshirt, to show off your division “dino” spirit! Thank you, Atziry Rodriguez Co-President

MESSAGES
As one of the club presidents it is my honor to be serving Cloverdale High Key Club, alongside Atzity. This will be my fourth and final year in Key Club and I will miss the unforgettable memories, and bonds I have made with the Key Club members. Although my time isn't over yet, I am very excited for this year, and have absolutely loved the portion of the year that has passed. I couldn't ask for a more supportive, passionate and enthusiastic Board. I know that we will accomplish great feats this year and will form an unimaginable bond. I hope that the service we accomplish will impact all of your lives, as it has impacted me. Key Club has shaped who I am as a person, and has made me a better leader. Sincerely, Rose French Co-President
Join us for some of our upcoming activities. The fun never stops with Key Club. And remember, if you are feeling overwhelmed by everything, take things one step at a time. And, don’t forget that we are here for you.
September Recognition For our September Member of the Month we wish to honor Anahi Ruiz. She is a great new member and already doing a lot. She has joined our Board as an Executive Assistant. She was also very important in helping with the Kiwanis table at the Bi-National Health Fair.
For the Officer of the Month we have chosen Atziry Rodriguez. She was chosen for working hard, especially on division projects. She was the division News Editor this past month, and she also gave a presentation at RTC. Finally, she has served the club as a CoPresident.
August Recognition Lillian Bearden
Our Member of the Month for August was Lillian Bearden who helped with the CHS Round-Up and PTP fundraising. Her scrapbook and trophy at the CHS Round-Up were big “hits”, and really helped students find an interest in Key Club. Lillian’s enthusiasm for Key Club is contagious!
Rose French
Our Officer of the Month was Rose French who worked hard as a club CoPresident, and spent a lot of time organizing things for the Round-Up day, as well as making plans for the start of the school year. Rose is also the Region Tech Editor. Between those two big responsibilities, she keeps busy with Key Club.
July Recognition April Recognition
The Member of the Month was Alyssa Gaylor. She received this honor for working hard and always being there with us at events and generally helping when needed. Alyssa is a strong support for our club, participating in almost every project we do.
The Officer of the Month was Jacob Menlove. He attended the division’s DCM and Goat Rock Beach CleanUp, in which members planned and talked about events and projects like Fall Rally and PTP. He also worked hard on the club website.
How is someone chosen to be honored this way?
This recognition is determined each month by the Club Secretary, during the process of writing up the Monthly Report Form. At that time, the Secretary reviews the service record of all the members, and based upon that information, and other factors considered important, the decision is made!
Meet Our Executive Board Meet our Executive Board – by Rose French As co-president with Atzity, we do various tasks through the year, from creating agendas to texting reminders to members. We hold the responsibility of making sure all members are aware of upcoming events and complete our goals through the year. Our Vice Presidents this year are Carmen Garcia and Jessica Aguirre; they are responsible for assisting the presidents and help plan various fundraisers through the year. Helen Hernandez is our secretary this year and takes notes during our general meetings along with our Board meetings. Our club secretary is also responsible for doing the Monthly Report Form that records all the service projects we have done in the previous month. Uziel, our treasurer creates the budget and maintains, and shares the Cloverdale Key Club weekly reports. Our two scrapbookers this year are Alyssa Gaylor and Yatziri Ruiz. They will make a scrapbook showing all the major events for the year. In previous years we have entered our scrapbook in district-wide events and won. Gabby, our newsletter editor works tirelessly to put together great a newsletter for the month, filled with pictures and articles by club members. Jacob Menlove, our club webmaster, helps provide various important resources such as the minutes from the previous meetings, member service hours, and the club calendar. We have a dedicated Board and we’re all very pleased to serve you. Shown here are the members who came to the September Board meeting, including newly appointed Executive Assistants.
Executive Assistants – by Atziry Rodriguez Executive Assistants are members who are not considered officers of the board in Key Club, but can contribute their ideas and go to Board meetings and vote on decisions and give their input. This year we are lucky and glad to have three Executive Assistants, Anahi Ruiz, Lillian Bearden and Cristina Cardenas. The factors considered when choosing Executive Assistants includes the applicants being responsible, reliable, and positive Key Clubbers who respect everyone else and who participates in lots of club activities. You do not have to have “perfect” grades to be part of the Board...we are actually still looking for a couple more Executive Assistants, so if you are a member who is interested in being a leader in the club, please don’t hesitate to contact either Rose, or Atziry, our co-presidents or our advisor, Sue Cummins. Here are our email addresses: Rose - rosefrench155@gmail.com; Atziry zirirod7@gmail.com and Sue – cummins@sonic.net.
We are proud to say that we logged in 406 hours of service during the months of July, August and September!
Our focus for this newsletter will be the recent September activities and the upcoming October ones. We always appear to have a full calendar. It seems like there is something going on almost every day of the school year. That was certainly the case for September, as well as our very busy October. Can you stay excited about Key Club?
Bi-National Health Fair Bi-National Health Fair – by Anahi Ruiz The Bi-National Health Fair is an amazing event, put together by many organizations to help Latinos and Mexicans. This year, the Bi-National Health Fair was held at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair grounds. The event itself was impressive, with many people who came and a lot of organizations involved with booths and more. The organization, in particular, that we helped was the Kiwanis’ Imagination Library. The is a non-profit program that gives children ages 5 and under the ability to excel in their reading skills. Each child in the program gets mailed to them a free, personalized book EVERY month from the day they sign up until the day they turn 5. Our local Kiwanis club is now paying for 300+ children in Cloverdale to receive those books each month! As one of the Key Clubbers who worked at the Kiwanis Imagination Library booth, I can tell you that this is not only an amazing opportunity for the children, but also for the parents. They get to see how their children’s minds open up to a world of possibilities through this reading program!
Region Training Conference
Region Training Conference – By Helen Hernandez Hey Key Clubbers, well I hope you all had fun at RTC. During the Region Training Conference, we made the cutest dog toys and met new Key Clubbers from other schools and even one from another state. We also had fun at the workshops that covered topics such as time management, scholarships, and how to be happy. This amazing experience was very fulfilling, especially when we met “cute Evan” who talked to us about the “Thirst Project” in Africa. Not only have we met new people, and crushed on a cute spokesperson, but we also enjoyed our time meeting the Division Leadership Team. The ice breakers were awesome. You should have seen Rose trying to “body pop” a balloon! At RTC we truly had an amazing experience.
During the Kiwanis annual Mothers’ Day Breakfast there were many things happening all at once. From the Kiwanians who made the pancakes on the 10 foot grill that continuously rotated, to the Kiwanians that handed out the food to the guests, it was a very busy time for all! Now, yes, during the actual day of the Mother’s Day Breakfast there was a lot going on, but in order for it to run smoothly there is intense prep work. From several committees meetings, which a few Key Clubbers attended, to making the corsages for the mothers to wear on their special day, to picture frames made by the Key Club to frame the experience for the families, to sales of news ads, it was a lot of work to put on this event. As for the Key Club, we helped in any way possible. We did prep work, as I mentioned before; but on the actual day of the breakfast we assisted by cleaning up tables, and helping with the donation drawing booth. Overall, the best part of the event was bonding with our parent Kiwanis Club. -Rose French President
Kiwanis DCM
On a Saturday in September, two of our members, Alexis and Rose, traveled to Ukiah to attend a Kiwanis Division Council Meeting. They were able to meet the incoming Kiwanis Lt. Governor, as well as learn about the activities that all the Kiwanis Clubs in our division are doing. It was an eye-opener for them!
Shine Days – by Jacob Menlove On Shine Days we meet up with the Special Day Class and do a project of some kind. Often, it is a craft project of some sort. For instance, last month we made dog toys out of old t-shirts. For this month, we will be making Halloween masks. Come join us and be a part of this fun project. We’ll be meeting with them on Friday, October 28th at lunchtime in Room 7.
The weather was perfect and we had the best time ever helping our Kiwanis Club with this annual event. Our members helped serve food and were at the table for the nonalcoholic drinks, taking tickets and giving out canned sodas and bottled water. It’s really nice to work with our Kiwanis, and get to know them better. We are so lucky to have their support! Helping at events is one small way we can say “thank you” to them.
Fundraising for PTP We started last July, with a special fundraiser in front of Ray’s and we’ve continued since then with regular times where we ask for donations to the cause. So far, we’ve made over $900 this way! Our Board voted to take a check for at least $1200 with us to Fall Rally on October 22nd. So our last week of fundraising in front of Ray’s is pretty critical! Hope to see our members working for this great cause!
Helping to reduce the number of children hospitalized due to emergencies!
Pediatric Trauma Program
Consider this…
Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.; Unintentional injury kills more kids every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide; Each year in the U.S., 9,000 families lose a child because of a preventable injury; and Studies indicate 90% of these unintentional injuries can be prevented.
Recognizing the serious need for education and training in the areas of pediatric trauma and injury prevention, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation established the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) in 1994. The mission of the program is simple: develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our three-state district who are killed or injured by trauma.

Sunday October 23rd Kiwanis Marathon – by Atziry Rodriguez The Kiwanis Marathon will take place on October 23, 2016 at Asti Winery, now called Gallo. The Cloverdale Vineyard Races consists of a marathon, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K. Its purpose is to raise funds for the Cloverdale chapter of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, an early childhood literacy program. It takes over 150 volunteers to produce the event each year; therefore, The Kiwanis would like as many Key Clubbers as possible who can make it for helping at the actual event on Sunday. They particularly need help with tear-down, starting at about 11 a.m. and going until about 2 p.m. You will earn $20 in Key Club Bucks for helping! Fun facts: they have no paid staff, and the vast majority of the work of putting on the race is being done by the volunteers. ”Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library” currently serves over 1,600 communities in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. Almost 750,000 children receive books each month. To date, the Imagination Library has delivered almost 60 million books to young children.“ In Cloverdale, over 300 children are receiving new books in the mail once a month through the generosity of the Kiwanis club. And, this marathon is how they pay for those books! So this race is very important to everyone!
Trick or Treat for UNICEF and Halloween Party – by Yatziri Ruiz There are thousands of Key Clubbers world-wide who raise money to help other children who are living in poverty. This project helps us, Key Club, raise as much money as we can, and then the money is used to provide children with resources to live. In past years, and probably in the future, some things the money goes to do might be building wells to provide the ones we help with healthy clean water and school supplies like blackboards, books, and other needs. Trick or Treat for UNICEF also provides those in need with medicine since they don’t have access to medical attention like we have. Right now, because Kiwanis is partnered with UNICEF for “The Eliminate Project”, our Key Club Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF funds are being used to bring tetanus shots to remote areas of the world for women of child-bearing age. We are working hard to “eliminate” maternal and neo-natal tetanus from the world! Key Club raises the money by going around during Halloween asking people for donations. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF helps save a baby that needs it because they don’t the medical attention needed. Besides going out on Halloween night, we are going to hold a Halloween party on October 31st. During the Halloween party we raise money by having the people who attend pay a fee which is three dollars. We provide food and a chocolate fountain, we also hold a costume contest where we provide prizes for the top three winners. The first winner receives a $15 Starbucks certificate, second place is $10 Starbucks certificate, and the third prize is $5 Starbucks certificate. This helps us raise the money needed to help children. We do this because it’s for a great cause.
