Service Need
Imagine that a child has just been born. The child cries, yet there is a particularly plaintive sound to these cries; in the process of being born, this child has contracted maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). This type of tetanus causes the infected individual to be sensitive to light, touch and sound. Which means, this baby will never know a mother’s touch, this baby will never see the light of day, this baby will never experience the joys of music; this baby will die. The good news is that this disease, (MNT), is rather easily destroyed. All it takes are a couple of inexpensive tetanus shots. We just have to get this medical aid to some of the most remote areas of the world.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have teamed up to eliminate MNT from the world. The most incredible thing about this disease is that the solution is quite simple. MNT is 100% preventable! All it takes is a series of 3 shots costing a total of $1.80! It is estimated that the total cost will be $110 million. But guess what!? Over $104 million has already been raised, the goal is in sight! There are so many benefits to the union of Kiwanis and UNICEF: Very little of the money fundraised goes to cover administrative costs The communities that receive the medical technology also gain knowledge of how to prevent MNT in the future $1.80 SAVES A LIFE!!!! (The vaccines protect all children the mother births for a 5 year period!)

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award
MNT is traditionally contracted during the birthing process, due to unsanitary conditions. In addition to providing the medicine to save lives, we must also educate those impacted, in order to better their lives and practices. Fortunately, that need is also being met through our KFamily Eliminate program.

Now, this all may seem like a huge, intimidating job, but here are a few statistics to put this in into perspective:
Yahoo! reports that Americans spend $426 billion on beauty products annually! Citizenlink says that Americans spend $91 billion on gambling each year.
The Associated Press recorded that Americans spend $56 billion on their pets every year. Where do we place HUMAN life on the scale of need?

Project Plan The Cloverdale Key Club has fundraised for the Eliminate Project for a few years now; but this year, we did something a little different. Our Kiwanis club pledged to be a “Model” Eliminate Club, with a need to fundraise $26,000. We decided that we would help them reach their goal, rather than worry about reaching a fundraising goal of our own. With that thought in mind, we began working TOGETHER on a plan for a jointly run event. But, here is the most interesting aspect of our efforts…. WE TOOK THE LEAD ROLE in the planning process!
The committee chair was the young man on the left. In this picture he is assigning someone a task to accomplish before the next time the committee meets.

The 2015-2016 Eliminate Project fundraising efforts began with a joint project with our Kiwanis club to sponsor a specific fundraising event. It all started when we met, a group of about 10 Kiwanis and 10 Key Clubbers, at a Kiwanis Division Council Meeting. We were given ½ hour of time to begin planning for a mutual effort to do something together for the Eliminate cause. The plan that we came up with, in that short amount of time was to put on a dinner and talent show.
This was the original mixed group of Kiwanis and Key Clubbers who decided on doing a joint fundraiser - pasta dinner and talent show.
The Eliminate Project
Plan
CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award
We named it the “Dinner of Talents and in order to ensure the success of our efforts, we set up a committee to oversee the details of the fundraiser. The Cloverdale Key Club has a great deal of experience with committees and we know how effective they are in the planning process. We held three jointly attended meetings over the course of the planning campaign. Pictured above is the tentative budget under which we operated.

We wanted our members and the public to learn more about the Eliminate cause. So, we planned a section on our club website that educates people who visit it. A side bar has one of the Kiwanis International videos about the Eliminate cause.
The video is just a small bit of the information found on our website. More details about the Eliminate section of the site will be shared under the “Public Awareness portion of this application.

Making sure that we had effective plans in place to implement our program was so important to us that we logged in 90 member hours in the planning process for our Dinner of Talents and fall campaigns. 23 different members attended at least one of our committee meetings. This kind of club buy-in to the project goals made it much easier to begin the process of executing both aspects of the project.

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award After the completion of our successful Dinner of Talents campaign, we began planning the fundraising for our own donation to the cause. These efforts, too, were successful, mostly because we know that planning is so very important to the success of any endeavor. It was the fall by then, so we decided to go with a couple of tried and true methods of fundraising, one being Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

Project Implementation For our series of fundraising activities to be successful, we knew we’d have to be organized and get people interested as well as educated about the cause. Our goal was to get involvement from the entire community by spreading the word; we were successful. Not only did we involve our high school, but we gained attention from the people of Cloverdale, young and old.
The Eliminate Project
Implementation
CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award Since our club basically did two unique campaigns over the Key Club year, it’s best if we talk about them in chronological order. We’ll start with the “Dinner of Talents” project that we spearheaded in the spring.
The first step in the process was to get our club members “fired up” to do the project! We knew we were going to attempt to put on the event during the month of May, but that it would take months of advance planning. So, we made sure that the event committee meetings were well advertised at our club meetings. There was always a committee report given after each committee meeting. And, upcoming committee meetings were always mentioned and discussed at our weekly meetings.
The Eliminate Project
Implementation
CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award In the next step, we organized our committee, and began to develop our in-depth plans for how we were going to put together our Dinner of Talents project.
Our committee meetings were well attended, (by both Kiwanis and Key Club), with a chairperson who created an agenda in advance, and a secretary taking notes. Notes were distributed to committee members after each meeting, and detailed committee reports were given by the chairperson at each subsequent Key Club meeting. This was done in order to keep member interest high.

We had 15 members show up to a work session that we held in the computer lab. We make flyers, wrote news articles, created the contest rules, etc.
We even went door-to-door in certain sections of town, and placed these flyers under doormats.
We began our Dinner of Talents campaign by advertising about the talent contest in a variety of places. We figured that the first step to ensuring that we sponsored a successful event was to get ourselves some good talent entries. We advertised at both the middle school and the high school. We put posters around town. We wrote an article for the town newspaper and put flyers up around the community. One of the Kiwanis members even went to an “open mike” session at a local establishment and talked to performers. We contacted the community’s voice instructor, the band teacher, and more!

Here is the article that went into the town newspaper to encourage people in the community to show up for our event.
Hello Cloverdale! On May 3rd 2015 The Kiwanis Family will be holding a Dinner of Talents to raise money for the “Eliminate” cause. For those of you that are not sure what the Eliminate cause is, this cause is raising money to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from third world countries. Numerous babies die every day from this curable disease. In fact, 11 babies die each minute! A series of three shots, given to the mother, will prevent her babies from getting this horrible disease that causes them to suffer and shortly expire. These shots only cost 60 cents each, for a total of $1.80. So the proceeds from this Dinner of Talents will go to benefit this amazing cause. We are looking for those with an appropriate talent who can perform at the event. The entry fee is only ten dollars a person (which includes the participant‘s meal). For those in group performances, every person in the group must pay the ten dollar entry fee. First place prize is two hundred dollars. Second place is one hundred and fifty dollars; third place is one hundred dollars. Besides a meal, every participant will receive a small token of appreciation for entering. Not only is this for a great cause, not only do entrants receive some pretty fabulous awards, but this a great opportunity for the community can get together and have fun. What better place to come together as the small town we are, than to join us at this Dinner of Talents? It will be a fun night watching the amazing talents and eating a fabulous, Kiwanis –prepared dinner. All those who are interested in being a part of the talent show must make a phone call to (707) 894-5467, to ask that a talent contest application form be mailed to them. Auditions are required. These will occur on April 26th 2015 at 5 p.m., at the Cloverdale High School East Gym. (If equipment is too heavy to transport, or other conditions apply which would make it difficult to attend the audition, video auditions will be accepted.) For those who just wish to eat dinner and enjoy the show, prices at the door will be $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $5 for children 12 and under. Pre-sale tickets will be $2 less for each; and will be available from Kiwanis members, CHS Key Clubbers and Washington School Builders Clubbers. The location of the Dinner of Talents will be Cloverdale High School East Gym from 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. We hope to see a lot of our community there! One week before the Dinner of Talents, we held an audition of the applicants. We wanted to make sure that the performances were view-worthy!
One contestant auditioned using a video tape, as it was too difficult to move her drum set until absolutely necessary, on the day of the event.
Members are shown here working with the sound system during auditions, trying to work out any “bugs”, so that on the day of the talent contest, everything would go smoothly.
We couldn’t get a piano moved into the contest site, so we videotaped one contestant and showed his talent on a huge screen that we set up on the day of the event.

A highlight of the evening was a presentation that the Kiwanis LTG made to our Kiwanis President. They were being honored. This was a good way to get the news out to non-Kiwanis in the audience that we’ve got a pretty awesome Kiwanis club.

But, this task was pretty much the only thing we left in the hands of the Kiwanis. It was decided that they would take care of this responsibility. But, we DID ask our Key Club parents to help provide desserts. (We also asked them to bring a silent auction item.) For the meal, our Key Clubbers were the servers for the evening.
We wrote letters home to the parents and inside put these small cards, to emphasize the most critical details in the letters. “Please bring an item for the silent auction and bring a dessert.

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award Of course, we had to create tickets for the event. We encouraged both Kiwanis and Key Clubbers to pre-sell the tickets. But, we also allowed for sales at the door. We actually did a lot of sales at the door, which complicated things because it meant we needed to plan for that possibility when we bought food supplies. Our Kiwanis handled the ticket sales at the door.
The Eliminate Project

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award In the end, we actually took in about $2300 on the dinner. The Kiwanis club absorbed the cost of the food, and the Key Club absorbed the other costs, (amounting to about $400). Then the Key Club Board voted to “round up” the amount by $200. So, we ended up awarding a $2500 check to our Kiwanis at one of their June meetings.

The Cloverdale Key Club was not afraid to take on the challenge of fundraising for the Eliminate Project. We had so many dedicated members back up our efforts with a tremendous passion for saving lives. We pulled off several extremely successful fundraisers over a period of several months. Our members face challenges head-on. We are persistent and enthusiastic. We were extremely excited to pursue different and unique methods of fundraising that proved to be quite successful! Helping our Kiwanis Club to reach their Model Club goal was extremely rewarding. It is very exciting to know that we were a pretty big part of their success. They were able to finalize their last donation this past December. Since we also gave them a $1000 donation last year, you can say that our small Key Club of 34 members was responsible for almost 15% of our Kiwanis clubs’ contribution to eradicate from the earth Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.

With a population of only 34 members, it’s safe to say the Cloverdale Key Club has done some amazing work. We have a strong core group of members who are genuinely dedicated to the cause. They have spent a great many hours in both the planning and implementation of the program. The ability to plan and organize is important when tackling a campaign for a cause like the Eliminate Project. We are able to understand that even those of us who have less control over our lives than we might prefer, can make a difference in the world. So many people don’t understand that their small actions, when compounded together, can impact so much. In reality, that’s what it takes to actually change the world. Sponsoring the Dinner of Talents was important for club recognition in the community. The word about us, and about the Eliminate cause was spread through a variety of means; we did everything from creation of the advertising flyers, to news articles in our town paper, to door-to-door visits at local businesses. These were all effective in spreading the good name of Key Club in our town. Our “CMN Destroyers” is not the only project that Cloverdale Key Club has worked on within the framework of the Key Club Major Emphasis Program. There are several more children’s projects that we’ve done this year. For example we fundraised for March of Dimes and the March for Babies. We raised funds for the Pediatric Trauma Program. We’ve also helped with a variety of service projects that were non-fundraisers. We volunteered at the local Food Pantry, and the Redwood Empire Food Bank. We sponsored our own events for the campus Special Day Class. We joined the rest of our division for a work day at the Kiwanis Family House, and fundraised to help refurbish our division-sponsored room. We assisted the Lions Club with their Christmas Toy Run, helped with the town’s X-mas Make-a-Wish project, and volunteered at the Salvation Army. There are so many projects where we provide help to children, and we can say, without a doubt, that every member has participated in at least one of these projects, so we have had 100% member participation in the sum total of them. Saving, helping, caring for children is what being a Key Clubber from the Cloverdale Key Club is about. From hunger, to thirst, to being poor or sick, helping children in need is our mission. We want to save them all, as best we can. From all across the world to the house right next door, we try to help in all different kinds of environments and places.

There were three times this year that we did special projects for the March of Dimes. The first was in April. We participated in the closest March for Babies event. We fundraised, mostly by asking for donations outside our local grocery store, and took $1200 to donate on the day of the event. This qualified us to “walk”, but we also volunteered as helpers. Many of our members helped out with the March for Babies by collecting funds, or they just went to help on the day of the event. March for Babies is primarily for providing research to help prevent prematurity. It’s pretty special to know that something you’ve done helps a tiny being to have a chance in life, and maybe survive, when that might not otherwise have been possible.

Our efforts helped the March of Dimes bring n thousands of dollars that day!
The third event was in November. We held a bake sale in front of a local grocery store in honor of March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness Month. We raised $129 for the cause.

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Major Emphasis Award Shine Days
Shine Day is what we call one of our really special programs. We sponsor a day once a month when we do activities with the Special Day Class students. Since they don’t socialize with the other high school students that much, we make an effort to become their friends. With the help of one of our local Kiwanis members, we plan projects to do with them at lunchtime, and we hang out with them, showing them how to do the activity and just talking. Their teachers are thrilled with this project, and say that we’ve made a real difference in their school lives. We usually have about a dozen members who participate each time.

Food Pantry
One of our goals is to make sure that children in our local community do not go hungry. The Food Pantry is also a project where we work with our Kiwanis Club, since they operate it three times a year. when we can, we help out with food distribution. Sometimes the distribution times occur when we are in school. But, we always help during the summer and Christmas break.

Redwood Empire Food Bank
We’ve been to the Redwood Empire Food Bank three times this year. The Food Bank is a division service initiative, and we go as often as we can to be supportive, even though the Food Bank is located in another town. We do a variety of tasks, which of course, translates to feeding children in need.

Pediatric Trauma Program
This is a Cali-Nev-Ha District Project, and it culminates every year with a donation made at the annual Fall Rally. Our members fundraised for 2 months in advance of Fall Rally, mostly by standing outside a local grocery store and asking for donations. By the time we went to the event, we had fundraised $800 for the cause. This cause helps hospitalized children dealing with emergency situations such as bicycle accidents, home accidents, and more.

On a Saturday in July, we participated in a division-wide project to help at the Kiwanis Family House in Sacramento. The Kiwanis Family House is a place where families can stay when they have hospitalized family members, (often children), in the nearby UC Davis Medical Center. We helped out by doing yard work in their patio area. We also donated, jointly with our Kiwanis club, $575 to the cause.

This was a joint Kiwanis/Key Club activity. Here is our club President and our Kiwanis President, handing over the check to a Kiwanis House representative.

Lions Club Toy Run
This is an event that we help the Lions Club with every year, at Christmas time. They do a motorcycle toy run that ends up with people coming in from far away for a BBQ and fun meal. Our members help serve and clean-up, and do whatever they are asked to do. The Lions Club collects thousands of toys each year that are then wrapped and distributed to children in our community who would not otherwise have much in the way of gifts at Christmas time.

This was a division-wide project, planned at a DCM that we held in January. We bagged up food for families in need. We got an assembly line going, and grabbed canned food and rice and other goods, and then put them in plastic baggies for distribution.

This is a favorite project for some of our members, and we do it year-after-year. We buy gifts for children at Christmas-time. Identified families in need complete an information card that describes what their children need or want. Then, the information cards are placed in businesses around town. We always set aside $200 of club funds to be able to buy Christmas gifts for three different children.
