Division 32/20

THE RAWR August 2012 Edition

Hello Division 20 Tsunamis and Division 32 Dinosaurs, I hope that your service activities are still going. The summer is winding down for some of us, and it's time to get ready for general meetings, recruitment events, retaining members plans, and more! Thank you to all the clubs that attended the Beach Clean Up/DCM; it really shows how much we care about each other when we make the effort to drive to Fort Bragg for this great event. Want to learn what happened at ICON? Look inside. Hope you can go next year to Washington D.C. So as most of you know, I am the chair this year for Regional Training Conference, or otherwise known as RTC; and I am proud to announce this year's theme is "Surfing for Service". The LTGS for regions 9, 15 and 17 have been working hard to plan a great event for you. Remember get members to go to the Awake-A-Thon, which is on September 15th. It’s purpose is to support the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Program cause. Look further for an advertisement with details about the event. Remember: Plan one fundraiser this coming month for the Children's Miracle Network. Begin planning how to fundraise for PTP and your way into Fall Rally. Plan in your budget to send at least 4 members to RTC, please!

Presidents’ Pages The one thing I love about Key Club is that there are so many new things to learn about in the world and in your community. I love going out in the community and helping, because then I know that I helped to make my town a better place, even if it is only a small change that I’ve made. The other thing I love about Key Club is that you make so many new friends. A lot of us have met BECAUSE of Key Club and have become really great friends! If anyone asks me, I would say join in a heartbeat, (DUH!), because it's a great organization and it's a great place to have fun and meet new people!

Dennis Lindelof Cloverdale Co-President

Hi! My name is Madeline Cline and I am a junior at Sonoma Valley High School. Music and sports are my main "hobbies," but I also love traveling and school, (yes, school). I love Key Club because it is a place where I can funnel my desire to help people in both my local community, and the global community. This year I am excited to be an upperclassman and to lead the Key Club at SVHS. -Madeline Cline Sonoma Valley President

Hey everyone. I’m Frances Fontanilla, president of the Fort Bragg Key Club, and also your division newsletter editor. I love being involved in my community, because I believe that it is a great way to give back to the “village that raised us”. Key Club has made a huge impact on my life. I’ve met amazing people, become a better leader, and also, (as I like to believe), have positively impacted other people’s lives. Frances Fontanilla Fort Bragg President

Hi guys! My name is Jinny Tran, from Santa Rosa High School, home of the panthers! Next year will be my junior year. I currently do cross country at my school. Running is one of my favorite things to do, especially with my team. I also am going to be in student government next year. I enjoy keeping busy, so I know that the upcoming year will be extremely fun. I may not be the tallest person around, but I always like to have fun! Jinny Tran Santa Rosa President

My name is Kimberly Chaparro, I am a senior of Montgomery High School! I'd like to think that I am able to make others smile, even at the cost of some embarrassment. If I had to choose a few adjectives to describe myself, they would be adventurous, considerate, and lively. I enjoy getting lost in music and photography when I want serenity. I have been a Key Club member since the beginning of freshmen year. I love that it offers the opportunity for people who enjoy giving back to their community to unite in an effort to make a greater impact; whether through fundraising for a cause or doing service. As an added bonus, people build friendships that would not have happened if they did not see that they shared a common interest in Key Club. This year, I am excited to meet and help others pursue their longing to help their community, country, even the world.

I love to paint and read, a lot! I can be very outgoing or very shy. Key Club is good for me because it gets me out there and doing things that will benefit me, and others. Plus, I get to meet a bunch of wonderful people. I'm really excited for this Key Club year because I have many ideas and I plan to get most of them done. (: -Kenzie Martin Rancho Cotate President

-Kimberly Chaparro Montgomery President

Some of the Presidents gathered at last month’s OTC to learn how to run a meeting, how to write an agenda, and more ways to make their club efficient. My name is Michelle Stovall and I'm the co-president of Sonoma Valley's Key Club, with Madeline Cline. I'm going to be a junior and I enjoy playing tennis, basketball, and softball. Other things that I love doing are hiking and reading. The thing I love most about Key Club is its interest in, and devotion to, helping the community and those around us. I am really excited to be more involved and to help make a positive impact in our school and community!

My name is Acacia Keith. I’m going to be a senior at Montgomery High School. This will be my fourth year in Key Club. My favorite part about Key Club is the sense of responsibility it gives me. I also love meeting all the compassionate people who are so willing and eager to help others. This year, I’m most excited about the division’s monthly volunteer visit to the Redwood Empire Food Bank, because it allows us to help and give back to our local community in a concrete way. -Acacia Keith Montgomery President

-Michelle Stovall Sonoma Valley President Hope you guys are having a wonderful summer filled with service! I am truly excited and honored to be elected Co-President of the Cloverdale club, along Dennis. I first started Key Club about a year ago when my friend asked me to join with her. I have loved what the club stood for, ever since. I hope to accomplish all the goals that Dennis and I have set for this year. Some of our goals are having a stronger bond with our Board and therefore our club, and with our Kiwanis Club and our Builders Club. If we have a stronger connection with these wonderful people, it will help unite us and we can accomplish all of our goals as a whole. We’re also looking at ways to get more students to join our club and keep them in our club for their time at Cloverdale High School. This is always a challenge. Hope we all have a wonderful year and that every club, including ours accomplishes all of our goals that we have set for ourselves. -Crysta Jojola Cloverdale Co-President

HONOREES Club of the Month: Windsor Windsor has been that club that DOES NOT shut down during the summer. They do service event after service event, fundraiser after fundraiser, meeting after meeting. They are making a connection with their Kiwanis Club by attending their board meetings and general meetings. The Windsor Club, under the leadership of Brenda, Josefina, Daniela, Marlen, Jessica, and Maria will go far. Thank you Windsor for your hard work!

Member of the Month Kim Bernal

Kim Bernal is the Member of the Month, because she is always willing to volunteer whenever her club needs someone. She also worked really hard on a t-shirt design for our division. We are very lucky to have her in our division.

Don’t forget that you have to attend at least 6 Divisional Council Meetings, starting with the one we held last April at the March for Babies. Count up how many you’ve gone to so far…. The next one is on August 11th, after the Redwood Empire Food Bank Day, starting at around 11:30 at Howarth Park. Don’t forget that you have to attend an officer training session….. at one of the following: District Convention, the Officers Training Conference that we held in June, International Convention or the upcoming Regional Training Conference, to be held on September 29-30. Don’t forget that you have to attend at least three Kiwanis meetings. These are general criteria that ALL outstanding and distinguished officers must meet. Each officer position has other criteria, specific to the office. Go to www.cnhkeyclub.org to find out more about the criteria for your position.

 Raising money for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Program is something Key Clubs do throughout the Fall season. Each club is asked to do at least one special fundraiser & then bring the money to Fall Rally.  Meanwhile, our division is doing a special D32 PTP fundraiser. We’re holding an Awake-A-Thon on Saturday, September 15th. Entry fee is $15 for a night of fun and games. $5 will be used for food & entertainment. $10 will go to the PTP cause. Details will be forthcoming at the August DCM.  Don’t forget that your club can also do a hands-on PTP activity, like some of those mentioned above! You can even apply for a PTP grant. To find out more about these visit: www.cnhkiwanis.org.

Hello everyone! As you may have heard a few of us were privileged to attend ICON, What is ICON? Well its stands for International Convention, and I had the honor of attending it this year. Now I can rant on and on about the fun time I had, but I want you to really know what the big hullabaloo is. Not only do you get the chance to learn about amazing service projects, ways to better communicate in your club, new ideas for fundraising, but, you even get to meet new people from other districts around-the-world. I am really excited about some new ideas I am now able to bring back to our club! For example, I learned all about how to create birthing mats for the ELIMINATE Project. We’ve got plans to get the plastic bags donated form Ray’s food Place and then we’re going to have a “mat-making party” on the Friday night of Key Club Week, at Dennis’ house! At ICON, we learned a lot about the ELIMINATE Project and great ways to contribute, fundraiser-wise, in helping to eliminate neo-natal-tetanus from the world. Another hands-on project I want our club to do is making and selling rings, (out of regular shirt buttons). We’re going to try to make a bunch of these, and then sell them for the Pennies for Patients cause! Look for us to start working on these, probably fairly soon! My experience during convention was amazing. Not only did I meet new people, but I also got to meet some of the new International Board members. During one of the sessions, called caucus, every district was put in a room where they listened to, and thought about, who to vote for, for the next International Board. This session was quite long but at the end of it we voted for the new Board members. Bet you thought ICON was all fun and games, huh? There was also a session called House of Delegates, this session required two representatives from each club and asked them to sit through discussions on new amendments, and then vote on them. These two sessions were what you can say were the most IMPORTANT part of convention because critical issues were voted on and passed.

When time came to say good-bye, we all left having met cool people, and advisors who, by the way, are some of the best. Also a BIG thank you to our Cloverdale Kiwanis for helping get some of us Cloverdale kids to ICON. And of course, we’ve got to recognize our club advisors, Mrs. Sue Cummins and Mr. Greg Carter.. They worked tirelessly to help us fundraiser. And Mr. and Mrs. Carter helped chaperone us while we were back there! I was happy to have been able to attend International Convention this year and get to meet the rest of the CALI-NEV-HA district, which by the way is awesome! Hopefully, I didn’t bore any of you, but if you decide to go next year, (which is in Washington D.C.), definitely fundraise as much as possible, early on in the year, so you can be able to go.

Fort Bragg Beach Clean-Up It was a perfect, sunny, Saturday for the Fort Bragg Beach Clean-Up. Members of the Cloverdale, Fort Bragg, and Montgomery Key Clubs came together to spend some time cleaning up Pudding Creek Beach. We each spent an hour picking up cigarette butts, water bottles, cans, glass, etc. Collecting trash definitely made a difference. We not only helped make it look better, but we also know that those little scraps of trash won’t pollute the environment, and that the birds, squirrels, and other local animals living nearby won’t mistake the trash for food. After the Beach Clean-Up, a local State Park Ranger came and talked to us about how even little things make a difference in keeping the coast clean. Afterwards, we all spent some time on the beach, making sand castles, skim boarding, or just enjoying the waves.

July DCM July’s DCM was held in Fort Bragg. Members of the Cloverdale and Montgomery Key Club traveled several hours over windy roads just to attend. We discussed several topics during the meeting. These included our D32 mascot name and possible division realignment. We decided to keep ourselves as dinosaurs…… but add a twist. Jacob is going to put out a survey to see what kind of dinosaurs we want to be. This will allow us to keep our costumes, banner and other dino paraphenalia, but still help us to become something unique and different from the other CNH division that have a dinosaur mascot! We also heard members talk about their experiences at ICON. But most importantly, we talked about future events for our division, such as the August DCM on August 11th, Fall Rally, Regional Training Conference, and the Awake-athon for PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program).

Hello D20/32, It’s the season where the summer is winding down and it’s time to hit the books, but it’s also time to start recruiting members. We also have to take a look back at what we decided our goals for the school year will be, and figure out how to make them happen. I hope this DCM gives you some ideas to help you begin a successful year. Remember to start raising money for RTC, (Regional Training Conference). The theme for this year is “Surfing for Service”. Hope you enjoy this beautiful summer day, and let’s get started on this water fight! Surfing the MILLION Waves of Service,
