CLOVERDALE MONTHLY BUZZ Volume 10, Issue 2 June 2015

Here is the tentative July calendar for the Cloverdale Key Club. There WILL be changes! But, we’ll be doing all these activities…… we just may have some on a few different days than listed here. Also, there may be some additional projects we’ll do. The Executive Board has yet to hold their June Board meeting. So look for changes to be posted by July 3rd.

Our Graduating Seniors — by Alayna Lorence

This year has been a great one. I am sad to say that the seniors in our club will be leaving, but it has been a great last year for them. With them we have been able to do many wonderful projects. With their help we were able to work at the Senior Center, help the Kiwanis with their fundraisers, throw together a Dinner of Talents for the Eliminate Project, and put on an amazing Halloween party. We have done many projects this past year and I just wanted to say thank you so much for helping us in service, in so many ways. We will truly miss you next year! You have left your mark on this club and we will always appreciate the service you have done. We all wish you luck in whatever you pursue! Congratulations class of 2015! May you keep serving! Thank you again for all your hard work!

On May 20th we held our annual Awards Night. There were quite a few awards given, and some major ones worth mentioning!! 

Our club earned Diamond Distinguished recognition for all of our efforts, thanks to the guidance of our past-president, Alayna Lorence, the help of the officer team, plus the participation of EVERYONE! There were five Distinguished medalists who were recognized at DCON. Liam Kluesener, for his duty as Treasurer. Maggie Duran earned Distinguished Secretary AND distinguished Single Service Award for the club. Helen Hernandez won Distinguished Scrapbook and, last but not least, Sue Cummins earned Advisor of the Year Award and Jack Luther Hall of Fame for her excellent work as a Faculty Advisor!! We also recognized the following members for their outstanding performance and service to the community, each with over 200 hours: Helen Hernandez, Maggie Duran, and Jessie Marshall! Also, the following members were recognized for their excellent meeting attendance: Lillian Bearden, Sandra Bernal, Bailey Creager, Trevor Creager, Maggie Duran, Audrey Fetzer, Rose French, Helen Hernandez, Sarah Rose Lindell, Alayna Lorence, Jessie Marshall, and Paige Wasniak. In addition, there were three members who spearheaded some of our largest fundraisers: Tyler Tipler with the PTP fundraising, Maggie Duran with the ELIMINATE Project, and Liam Kluesener with the Dinner of Talents Fundraiser.

The awards night was a fun evening that closed the Key Club calendar year in a special way, and gave thanks to the members who served our club well!

Relay For Life by Nick Schneider Every year the American Cancer Society holds a fundraiser called Relay For Life in order to raise money for cancer research. The event helps honor those who have overcome cancer and those who have tragically succumbed to it. In the past, Cloverdale has held their Relay for Life at the high school track, but this year, in an attempt to draw a larger crowd, it was at the downtown plaza. Participants walked to lively music provided by our town’s very own, Ben Crosby; and all in all, the event was a success. It was a beautiful day, and we could see people tirelessly walking all day long. Around sunset, we all pitched in and set up the Luminaria, (illuminated bags that are decorated in honor of those who have fought cancer). It was a beautiful sight. After a rewarding day, we wrapped up the event with our time-honored quilt auction to raise money for the cause. After such a heartwarming tradition, we partied. Ben provided music and lights, and we boogied the night away; the perfect way to end a wonderful day.

Bailey Creager, Audrey Fetzer and Nick Schneider represented us well at the recent division-wide service project at the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

Our very own Kiwanis Advisor, Mr. Carter, gave an exciting presentation at the June Division Council Meeting. He talked about the District Goals of $170,000 to fundraise for PTP; 1,000,000 service hours; 5 service projects a month per club and 5 new members to every club.

On June 22nd at 8 a.m. there will be an opportunity to help the senior center with their garden by prepping their soil for planting. Contact Carmen Garcia, (carmengarcia_894@yahoo.com), if you would like to help with the project. There will also be a number of opportunities, all summer long, to work on the garden project.

Also, Bailey Creager is in charge of our table painting project. Remember, we hope to beautify the tables at CHS. Our first time to start on the project will be on Monday, July 6th. We’ll be sanding down the tables, and then putting a coat of primer paint on them, getting ready to do actual designs the next time we meet‌.. which is scheduled for Thursday, July 9th. Contact Bailey at creagerbailey@gmail.com if you want to be involved.

At our recent DCM, it was decided that we should help with both the Special Olympics Softball Tournament in Napa, and Macy’s Shop for a Cause day on August 29th. We are also scheduling a beach clean-up on July 11th and want to get together on July 19th to make items needed in the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Children’s Miracle Network—By Maggie Duran

Every hour, member hospitals provide surgery for 97 children.

Hello Key Clubbers! We have a great deal of service planned for the next couple months, and one of our focuses will be the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). CMN Hospitals are so vitally important to our nation, simply because children cannot be treated the same way adults can; the medicines, care, and entirety of the practice is different. Every cent fundraised goes to research, equipment, treatments and training of pediatricians. Our club is extremely experienced with fundraising, however, we won’t be out in front of Ray’s asking for donations; instead, we will be involved in various craft projects that will directly benefit the children at the Oakland Children’s Hospital. These projects can vary from making non-skid socks by using puff paint, to making decorative pillow cases; or as some of you might remember, making sock caterpillars. Join us on Sunday, July 19th. Be at CHS at 1:00 p.m. It’s going to be a wonderful afternoon with a bit of socializing and tons of creativity!

This is a preview of the new website that Bailey Creager has created for the club! Be sure to check into it for all of the club’s pictures, calendars, service hours, member fundraising progress, and other cool features like the Key Club word of the Week!!

Check out the new website and all of Bailey’s efforts. She did an amazing job putting the website together and making it beautiful, and informative!

As of May, our AAR score (a score based on all of our monthly service, meetings, Kiwanis relations, etc.) was “98”. That’s pretty good. This is how we maintain our Diamond Distinguished level of work. A few of the ways we can raise this is by attending several Kiwanis meetings this month, attending the DCM, holding at least 5 service projects and other Key Club activities, and more! The Board will convene on June 22nd to figure out the best way to raise our score next month, so if you have any ideas, send them to the officers! A directory will be included on page 16 of this newsletter. Of special note: Jessie Marshall will be going on stage at International Convention in just a few short days to receive our Diamond Distinguished plaque for the 2014-15 year!

That being said, pat yourselves on the back for the job we’ve done so far, during the first 3 months of the new Key Club year. That’s a really awesome job for a really awesome club! If we keep it up, we can get another Diamond Distinguished award next year at DCON, and who wouldn’t want that?? Keep up the good work, we all are doing a great job!
