Caring–Our Way of Life

The core values of Key Club International are:

About our President By Alyssa Gaylor I’m definitely looking forward to the upcoming school year with Anahi as our President. I’ve known her for about 5 years and I know she is capable of great things. Anahi is a former Builders Clubber, and in her freshman year as a Key Clubber, she spearheaded our major community service project. The application she wrote for recognition is even going on to the international level of competition!

Hello Fellow Key Clubbers! I am honored to be serving you as your 2017-2018 Cloverdale Key Club President. Throughout this year, I want to bring the stakes higher than ever, but that also means we need your commitment. It is my job to help the Board set goals for the club, and then, of course, help come up with ideas to fulfill them. However, the club Board cannot do it all. We will need all our members to get involved. With that being said, we have an outstanding Board I would like you to meet. Anahi Ruiz This is Neidi Calvillo. She is one of the Vice Presidents and may I say, she is absolutely amazing. When you see new posts on the social media or the monthly newsletter, it is she and the other Vice President, Alyssa Gaylor, working hard. I am very proud of them both of them. Meet Alyssa Gaylor, the other Vice President. She works hard and helps a lot with the communication with the membership. She is also in charge of our Kiwanis relations! Like Neidi, she also assumes the responsibility of the monthly newsletter editor. Neidi and Alyssa make a wonderful team, and they surprise me with their amazing achievements, one after another. This is Gaby Goana, the club Secretary. Being Secretary is a huge commitment, not only to the club, but also timewise. It is extremely time-consuming, from taking minutes at meetings to creating MRFs, (Monthly Report Forms), every month. Gaby is doing a fantastic job and we expect great things from her this year. Meet Cristina Cardenas, our club Treasurer. She takes care of managing the money for the club. For example, she collects all the dues for the club and takes care of dues payments with Key Club International. She is very good at what she does, and we are definitely lucky to have her.

Now that you have met the Board, I would like to say, do not hesitate in asking questio any way possible.

Rory Kluesener, is our club Webmaster. He has completely changed the website for the better. By creating one from scratch, he has developed a new design and put well over 70 hours, this month, into the website. This is truly outstanding and I cannot wait to see what other tricks he has up his sleeve. Now that you have met the Board, I would like to say, do not hesitate in asking questions! We are all here to answer any questions you might have, and we would love to assist you in any way possible. ~ Anahi

We also have a great group of Executive Assistants this year. Their job will be to assist the officers in many decisions we make. Executive Assistants are voting members of the Board. Basically, they help run the club! At present, the 2017-18 Cloverdale Key Club Executive Assistants are:     

Rowan Addison Jessica Aguirre Andreina Inda Sebastian Ley Yatziri Ruiz

MESSAGES

Cloverdale Key Club Yearbook By Andreina Inda This was the second time that we decided to make our very own Key Club yearbook. We included lots of amazing stuff in our yearbook, such as, pictures that were taken of us, events that Key Club helped with, and awards that we won. The events go in order by the months, starting with last June and ending with this May! Pretty much each event that we attended in those months of Key Club was represented. We showcased help by our members with the Redwood Empire Food Bank to Division Council Meeting activities, to what we did on Shine Days, how we fundraised, and so forth. Also, some of the events were run by Kiwanis, like the Cloverdale Vineyard Runs, the 4th of July BBQ, and all of the Kiwanis meetings that are held on Thursdays. It was fun to remember all those times we worked side-by-side with our sponsors. December seemed to be a month when almost everything we did was something we shared with our Kiwanis! We were able to do some fun projects with other Division 32 members, like Fall Rally which was held at Six Flags and other D32 projects such as helping to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program Foundation. After this past year of being in Key Club for my very first year, it’s amazing to look back on all the awesome projects that we were able to create and help with. I am so glad that I got a Key Club yearbook!

Kiwanis Governor’s Visit

The Kiwanis Governor’s Visit By Neidi Calvillo A couple of us Key Clubbers from Cloverdale went to the Division 32 “Karnival” that was held to honor the annual visit of the Kiwanis Governor for CaliNev-Ha. We helped out by running some of the carnival booths. Anahi and I took care of the coloring booth, while the rest of the Key Clubbers took care of other activities. The Governor gave a speech and so did the “First Lady”, the Governor’s wife. A woman from the North Bay Kiwanis Club performed a carnival-style dance for everyone. Several Key Clubbers from Cloverdale and other schools received a souvenir pin from the Governor. It was a good time, getting to meet the Kiwanis Governor and spending time with friends.

We regularly attend our Kiwanis meetings, and have so much fun! They are wonderful role models for us!

Builders Club Dinner

The food was delicious and we were so proud to honor our middle school partners in service.

Shine Day

Shine Day By Anahi Ruiz For those who do not know what a Shine Day is, it is a tradition at our high school where our Key Club does a fun social event with the Special Day Class on campus. We have fun activities planned for them. We do this once a month. Most of the students in the Special Day Class never get to do anything with other students on campus. They are stuck in their one-room class all day long. So, they really appreciate the fact that we spend time with them. For May, we met with them on Shine Day and helped them make cards for their moms that read, “Thanks for raisin me, mom!; and then we bonded raisin boxes on the cards, and put bows on the boxes. The kids really loved making the cards and it was just an amazing experience being able to help them make this special day for moms just a little better. This is a continuing project for us, and I can hardly wait to see what we do with the class next year!

Kiss A Senior Good-bye Kiss a Senior Goodbye By Gabriela Gaona For a whole week in May, some of our members sat out in front of our school office during lunch break selling small bags of Hershey’s Kisses with a card, so people could give them to the graduating seniors. Students could purchase the card and Kisses to give to seniors as a way of showing them that they care about them, or as a small going away gift to let them know that they will be missed. It was a very thoughtful service project and many seniors who received some Hershey’s Kisses were very happy.

End-Of-The-Year Awards Night End-of-the-Year Awards Night By Anahi Ruiz The Cloverdale End-of-the-Year Awards Night was an astounding night where we had a lovely potluck dinner and recognized the members of the club for their participation during the 2016-17 school year. We had our friends and families join us and that made it even more special. It was a night filled with mixed emotions, for our past Board entered retirement and the newly elected officers were officially installed. In addition to that, the scholarship winners were announced. Other awards given out included recognition for those who had the most service hours, those who helped raise the most money for service, those on the 2016-17 Division Leadership Team, those who went to DCON and Key Leader, helpful Kiwanis and helpful parents, and many more! It was sad to see the seniors go; but it was also exciting to see the new officers and know that the next Key Club year will continue our legacy of excellence.

For our Officer of the Month, we felt that Alyssa Gaylor deserved it, because she stepped up as a leader and was appointed as a club vice president, as well as being a main worker at the club car wash.

8th Grade Promotion 8th Grade Promotion By Gabriela Gaona On Thursday, June 1st the Washington Middle School held their promotion of eighth graders. Four of our Key Club members set up a stand and sold water and Hershey’s Kisses in order to help fundraise for the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. It turned out to be a very hot day to sell ice cold water; and it was a success. Many people came back for seconds and were happy that we were there. We made a lot of sales and watched some of our incoming Key Clubbers promote. We raised $130 for the Eliminate cause.

May Recognition MEMBER OF THE MONTH This month we chose Jessica Aguirre as Member of the Month, because she has been very active lately. Specifically, she presented at the Builders Club Awards night and helped at the car wash. She was also recognized at our club Awards Night as having one of the top service records for the Key Club year.

OFFICER OF THE MONTH For our Officer of the Month, we felt that Alyssa Gaylor deserved it, because she stepped up as a leader and was appointed as a club Vice President, as well as being a main worker at the club car wash. Alyssa is an officer that we know we can count to be involved in almost all of our activities.

Summer Starts And We Don’t Stop! Grocery Outlet By Gabriela Gaona On June 10th, a few of our Key Club members helped with the Grocery Outlet Grand Opening. We helped set up a table right in front of the store; and there we sold hot dogs and beverages. We made $253 and the store gave the profit to us, as well as $400 in gift cards. We are so happy that we were able to pull this off, because with it being the first week of summer vacation, many members were quite busy. Overall, the members had a great time and we later received a thank you note from the Grocery Outlet which was very sweet of them.

Looking Fantastic! By Gabriela Gaona Rory has been working very hard on our club website this month. He has worked with a couple of other Key Club members to help with feedback and with the design of the website. He has put about 70 hours into the creation of the website; and it’s turning out very nice. He seems very passionate about it and is giving it his all. So far it looks amazing; and he has added some new features where it allows members to RSVP to an event or service project, as well as to check their service hour records. The website offers many new things and loads of information from the club to our members. We are all so proud of him and we can hardly wait to see the final product.

Division Leadership Team

Division Leadership Team By Anahi Ruiz The Division Leadership Team is an amazing team built up by individuals chosen by the Lieutenant Governor. Within the team, we have one member from the Cloverdale Key Club who was chosen, Anahi Ruiz. Anahi is the Education Tasks Coordinator for the Division. The DLT holds one meeting per month, in Santa Rosa, to discuss future events and to plan upcoming Division Council Meetings. The team has a total of 10 members and I am very happy to say that they are doing a wonderful job and are a very strong team. I feel fortunate to be a part of this group!

Color Run and Fundraising for the Eliminate Project By Andreina Inda On June 24th, Windsor hosted a DCM which included an event called a “Color Run”. The Color Run is an event that helped fundraise money for the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project is a venture that was started from Kiwanis and has been its major service issue since 2010. The main goal is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. These terrible diseases steal the lives of 11 children every minute. The event coordinators suggested that we wear white while participating in the color run, because it creates a random, but amazing design on your clothes. The reason for this is because there were people lined up and they threw colored corn starch at us while we ran the course. This is the very first color run that has been done in our division, and we had fun because, 1) we looked amazing when it was all done, and 2) it’s for a great cause! Oh! By the way, the way we’re raising money for the cause is that entry into the color run brought in donations for a wonderful cause. To fundraise for this, we were out in front of Ray’s asking for donations, and we took $5 each to donate on the day of the “run”. Our total amount we raised was $178.

June Board Meeting

We worked and played hard. At the meeting we made a lot of decisions about how we wanted to operate for the next school year. But, we also had a great time in the pool!

Anahi Ruiz was chosen as June Officer of the Month for Division 32

REFB By Gabriela Gaona The Redwood Empire Food Bank service project is coming up and it’s one you don’t want to miss. During July of last year I attended my first DCM. I didn’t know what to expect because it was my first DCM and to be honest I didn’t know much about what Key Club did, and what it was really about. I was just so busy the previous years with sports and other things that I let myself miss out on events and service projects like these. That DCM changed the way I saw and thought about Key Club, because I realized that it was much bigger than I thought, and that other clubs are working towards the same service goals as us. Helping at the Food Bank that day, before we held the meeting, was one of the most memorable service projects that I’ve done, because all the food that we were unpacking and loading into boxes was going to families who really needed it; and without our help they’d have to wait longer to receive the food that they so desperately needed. Doing this alongside many other Key Clubbers was something I had never experienced before, and it’s an experience that began my passion for service. I now encourage you to embark on new experiences during this term, because in the end, it can be life changing. I very much hope to see you at the Redwood Empire Food Bank on Saturday, July 22nd.
