President’s Message By Anahi Ruiz Hello my rawring’ DINOS!! You guys have amazed me time and time again; and I am so proud of all you have accomplished! February has been a very busy month and I am very happy to announce that we have elected our new officers!!! I am looking forward to teaching all of you the “ropes” and as my term comes to an end; I am so happy to know I will be leaving the club in good hands.
Keep up the DINO-tastic work!!!
January Recognition MEMBER OF THE MONTH The Member of the Month for January is Miguel Gonzalez. He has shown great interest for service and has volunteered at half of this month’s service events. He even attended the Division Leadership Team meeting! Miguel managed to work hard enough this month on a variety of projects.
OFFICER OF THE MONTH The Officer of the Month for January is Gabriela Gaona. She has spent close to 20 hours working on the Single Service Project application for our club, as well as being involved in a variety of other projects and activities. Her over-all service record is 185 hours, and we are so proud of her.
February Recognition MEMBER OF THE MONTH The Member of the Month for February is Sophia Witt. Sophia really stepped up this month with attendance at more than one Kiwanis meeting, helping with the Citrus Fair Exhibit, selling Disneyland donation Drawing tickets, helping at the Steelhead Festival, and more!
OFFICER OF THE MONTH The Officer of the Month for February is Alex Visconti. Alex has worked hard on keeping the website regularly updated. And spent some considerable time making changes to it helping it to be a better representation of our club service work. We are so appreciative of all he does to help keep our members informed.
Disneyland Donation Drawing Sales
By Anahi Ruiz The Cloverdale Key Club is sponsoring a drawing to win tickets for 2 people to go to Disneyland for 2 days with Park Hopper passes! The drawing will be held at our Kiwanis club’s annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. This drawing is a fundraiser for our “Save the Rain” project, which is our major service project of this year. “Save the Rain” is an organization that builds rain catchment systems for villages in Africa. Recently, a couple of our members worked very hard to sell tickets. One member even traveled to Santa Rosa for a Chamber of Commerce meeting, while another set up a table outside our local grocery store to ask people to either buy tickets or give donations to the cause. Between them, they brought in a little over $500 in sales! Our goal is to sell at least $2000 worth of tickets before May 13th, the day of the drawing.

EDUCATION 443 million school days are missed each year by children suffering from water related illnesses. More class time is lost each day when students are forced to search for water for the school’s sanitation and drinking water needs.
SOLUTION By providing schools with the ability to harvest rain on sight, students no longer need to forfeit their learning time in search of water. Every additional year of school a child receives will raise his/hers earning potential by 10%.
HEALTH 50% of all hospital beds around the world are filled with someone with a waterborne illness.
SOLUTION By providing children access to clean water at home and at school, we have seen a drastic decrease in water borne diseases. After just 6 months, we saw a 45% improvement in children’s general health and a 96% improvement by the end of the first year.

Officer Elections On a Tuesday in early February, we held a special Key Club Meeting where we elected our Board for next year! We had sandwiches, chips, and drinks during the meeting. It was a fun time and we even had some spontaneous decisions from a couple of members to choose to be on our new Board! 12 members were elected. You can see our new Board pictured below!
Citrus Fair Exhibit By Andreina Inda
Working on a Cloverdale Citrus Fair Exhibit is amazing. The Citrus Fair is a special event held in our community, and our local youth are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways. One way is to create a flat, 4 foot by 8 foot “orange” display. The exhibit has to be covered with foods, because that’s basically the whole point. It’s an old-fashioned art form. This year’s Citrus Fair theme was “Superheroes”. We decided to honor our local fire department with our display. And then we had a border that went around the main piece; and that was made with oranges. The hard thing about this project is to find the right foods to make the piece look nice, because there were times where we tried certain types of spices, seeds, etc. But, it didn’t look how we expected it to, so we used other products, and even mixed things together to get the color we wanted; and it turned out great. Other than that, the experience of making the exhibit was incredible, because although it takes time and patience, looking back at what you’ve done is amazing! After all, it’s about quality, not speed. I am so glad that this year our club demonstrated their community spirit in this way! One other reason that I’m glad we did this project was that we shared the workload with our Builders Club. This activity gave us all a chance to get to know each other a little better, and to bond as part of the Kiwanis family! Citrus Fair Parade By Lilli Sullivan
On the day of the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Parade, some of our Key Clubbers met up with our Kiwanis members about an hour-and-half before we were scheduled, as a Kiwanis Family, to start walking in the town’s annual Citrus Fair parade. After we were all ready to go – dressed up as cats – we were given small flyers to hand out to people who were along the route, watching the parade. The theme of our parade entry was to honor the “Forgotten Felines of Sonoma County”. This organization did a lot during the North Bay Fires to save stray cats, caught in the open and lost from their homes. Once the parade began, everyone in our group began to hand out the flyers, telling about this organization that saves lost cats; and I’d say it was a hit, especially for the little kids who loved to see people dressed as cats walking down the street. Overall, the parade went really well. A lot of flyers were passed out and there were lots of people who seemed interested in adopting a lost cat; which was great, because that’s what we wanted! It was a fun time, and we all enjoyed being a part of the parade with our Kiwanis club.
By Gaby Gaona I had the rare privilege of taking on the task of putting together an application for Cali-Nev-Ha recognition of one of our most important projects this year, the one where we fundraised $2863 for the North Bay Fire Victims. We called it, “The Love in the Air”. Writing this application was fun, but it wasn't easy. It took a lot of time and effort to complete something as time-consuming as this project. Yet, I wanted to make sure I was going at a slow enough pace, because this was a project that I did not want to rush, mostly because it had to do with our community; so it meant a lot to me. I poured my sweat, feelings and heart into this application and I couldn't be any happier with how it turned out. I highly recommend that a member takes on the honor of writing a “Single Service Project” application for the upcoming year!
Member Recognition Event There was a Tuesday in February when we held an especially fun meeting. Kiwanis President Gene Lile came and helped award members for their service efforts this year. We served tamales, rice, and beans for lunch. New members got awards and Key Club pins. We also recognized past Members and Officers of the Month. Almost every member got recognition of some kind at this meeting. At the end we played “Chubby Bunny�, which ended in a lot of laughter and Miguel as the winner.
Shine Day By Katelyn Wilson On Friday, February 9th, Key Club met with the Special Day Class for our February Shine Day. We decorated paper hearts with the students, using stickers and colored markers. Everyone had many creative designs and most of them dedicated the Valentines they made to their moms. We also gave each Special Day Class student and teacher a Valentine mug with candy, which they were thrilled to receive.
Steelhead Festival By Rowan Addison | Cloverdale On a Saturday morning in early February, a few of our Cloverdale Key Clubbers met at the high school to be taken to the Steelhead Festival being held at Warm Springs Dam Visitor’s Center. We got volunteer badges when we arrived and started working at the face painting booth. We used stencils to paint designs onto both kids and adults. Many of the stencils were Valentine's Day themed, with hearts and Cupids. It got very busy, and all five of us had to be painting faces at the same time! We heard it announced that 12,000 people showed up that day! And, a lot of them visited our face painting table! Once we got a chance, we went in shifts for lunch, and then we all went and got a “Wicked Slush”, which was a delicious treat! We did more painting, clear up until closing time, at 4 p.m. Then we cleaned up our station and headed home. By the end of the day, all of us had many of the designs painted on ourselves, mostly flowers and stars! We all had a great time; and we made a lot of kids at the festival happy with their new “tattoos”.
On a Saturday morning towards the end of February, the Builders Club invited our Key Club to join them in a service adventure at the Redwood Empire Food Bank. We had one member who joined two of them to help sort produce for families in need.
Seeds of Learning By Alex Visconti Seeds of Learning is a non-profit organization started in Sonoma County with the goal of helping kids in Nicaragua and El Salvador attend school. They build schools, provide scholarships to send the children to school, and promote cultural understanding. Cloverdale Key Club is going to help raise money for them and use t to sponsor kids and send them to school. It can either be an elementary school kid for $250, a high school student for $500, or we may consider some other suggestions for what to do with the money we raise. The first meeting of the committee to decide how we’ll raise the money is on Thursday, January 11th; and the meeting will be at lunchtime. We hope you can make it and bring all your wisdom and care with you!
Two of our members attended the February Division Council Meeting. There was a short meeting with highlights about upcoming events and recognition given to members. Then, we did a service project where we stuffed hundreds of Easter Eggs for the Windsor Kiwanis Club Easter Egg Hunt. Finally, we held a fun “Winter Olympics” event with three teams doing crazy things! These pictures are all from the Olympic contest.

The Cloverdale Key Club website is one of the most important tools you have as a Key Clubber. On there, you’ll find information about upcoming events, a poll, and photos from events. I really suggest going on there; plus, you can see pictures of you and fellow Key Clubbers. It is really important to go on the website right now, because it’s being judged; and when judging the website for Distinguished, one of the judgments is based on how many visits there are to the site. But, I really encourage you to look around. There is a lot worth viewing! If you haven’t yet logged in to the Members Only page, make sure you do that. You can see the most recent updates on service hours and Key Club Bucks. Don’t forget the service records for Key Club start at the previous District Convention, so they include some of the final months of the 2016-17 school year.

One of the best sections on the site are the photos. They are uploaded within a day or two of any event; and since we usually have a couple events each week, you can count on new pictures being there every couple of days!
On the following pages, check out what’s happening the rest of March. April begins with Spring Break and then it’s time for District Convention! Key Club doesn’t close down after District Convention. Matter of fact, there are a couple of REALLY IMPORTANT events occurring on the last two Saturdays of April. Be sure to carefully examine the opportunities still being offered!
