At the Redwood Empire Food Bank

During Key Club Week we did a ‘Take-Over’ at the Kiwanis meeting, when our Key Club Board did everything that the Kiwanis normally do. It was fun to mix things up for both Key Clubbers and Kiwanis. members!

By Neidi Calvillo Hello everyone!! For the 2018-19 term we celebrated Key Club Week by doing different activities! For Monday, we “Showed our K in Every Way” by wearing our division t-shirts! On Tuesday, we set up donuts and fruit for the staff of our high school. This was “Kudos to the Key Players Day”. On Wednesday we did a Diverse-A-Dish dinner with the whole K-family! It was “Dare to Care” Day, and we made almost $300 for the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. On Thursday we did our Kiwanis take over-meeting; and gave out clothespin messages for “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. Lastly, on Friday we were supposed to go to the Epicenter with the K-family, but we couldn’t, due to the smoke in the air. The fires once again had started, and we couldn’t go; but we are working on rescheduling! Also, the fires are over so that’s great news as well! I like Key Club Week because it gives us a chance to remember what we’re all about…pride in the organization, thanking those who make our lives better, working to make the lives of others better and bonding with our K-Family. As we celebrate this month of being thankful, we can add one more thanks to our list…THANK YOU Kiwanis for enriching our lives by making Key Club possible!

Hearing

Secret Santa Pals By Alexis Sanchez The Secret Santa Pal project is one of the many ways we connect with our Kiwanis Club. It is also one of the many ways we can show them how much we appreciate them, by giving them gifts from the heart. We give them a list of things we, as an individual, might want; and we get a list of things a specific Kiwanis member wants. This is such a fun project. Join us on Thursday, December 13th and be a “pal to a Kiwanis member!

Member of the Month Mem

6

Our Member of the Month for October was Kayla Gallego who participated in 6 of our events. She also volunteered to be a Co-Editor for our club newsletter. Even though she was learning about newsletter production, which took a lot of time, she still managed to be responsible for quite a bit of that newsletter. She also put in an application, and she was accepted to be an Executive Assistant on our club Board.

Officer of the Month

Our October Officer of the Month was Alex Visconti. He has a huge impact on our club because he is one of our two Webmasters. He is careful to be responsible about putting new items, photos and other materials onto the site as quickly as possible. He was also one of the members who worked the longest hours at the Kiwanis Vineyard Races, starting at 6 a.m. and staying through a lot of the clean-up.

Let it Rain From the Save the Rain Facebook Site Our first area of implementation when entering a community is to build a 150,000+ liter rain water harvesting tank on the village primary school; this frees children, particularly young girls, from their time as water walkers. When there is no longer the need to fetch water during school hours, students are given back their learning time. Time which allows them to pursue their education, and it opens the door to break the cycle of poverty they were born into. Measured Impact: đ&#x;’§Within the first year of implementation, we see an average of 96% improvement in the general health of students. đ&#x;’§School enrollment and attendance immediately skyrockets once tanks are in use, we’ve seen upwards of 150%. đ&#x;’§For each additional year of education a student receives, they increase their earning potential by 10%. đ&#x;’§For every additional year girls receive an education, child mortality rates drop 18 per 1,000 births.

Save the Rain Project By Lilly Duran Our last Save the Rain activity was a huge success! We held the Color Blast with lots of donations from businesses in town, as well as a fun time had by all! Our next event is the Grease Movie Night. This evening activity will be held at the Cloverdale Performing Arts Center on Friday, January 18th. It will be a joint project with our Kiwanis. We are hoping many of you will show up and have lots of fun! Meanwhile, PLEASE consider coming to our next committee meeting where we will be making plans for advertising, and for selling tickets to attend this event.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at Starbucks on Monday, December 3rd

Dues are Paid

By Paula Toledo Being Treasurer has taught me so much. It gave me a new experience and a new sense of responsibility. With the help of my advisor Sue Cummins, we paid dues in the past month for 29 active members; but we have a few members left that we couldn’t enroll, due to complications with their membership forms. But, not to worry, we have until February 1st to continue to pay dues. Once everyone is paid up, I think we’ll have about 32 members! This is more than last year. It warms my heart that I’m doing my job effectively. I just heard that we will get us a patch for our Key Club banner because I was able to take care of business by the “Early Bird” dues deadline. I will continue working hard to make our club proud. I am also really proud, because those 29 members have earned almost 1000 hours of service so far this year!

Fall Rally By Danielle Neustadt

10

One of my favorite projects this year was fundraising for PTP and then going to Fall Rally. We did a PTP, (Pediatric Trauma Program), table in front of Ray’s for three weeks before Fall Rally North, which was held at Six Flags, Vallejo. We were raising money for the kids who experience trauma and go to a children’s hospital. One hospital that benefits from this project is the Oakland Children’s. All of the money we raised is used by these hospitals for the needs of the children and their families. We ended up taking $900 for PTP to Fall Rally! By doing this activity, we ALSO benefitted, as we earned “Key Club Bucks” that helped us to be able to attend Fall Rally. The day of Fall Rally was a blast! We got dressed up in our club spirit gear and when we got to Six Flags we saw so many other Key Clubbers from all over! At about 11 a.m., our division group met and waited to go into the arena for our “rally”. There, we chanted a ton of cheers that we learned in support of our division! There were division challenges between all the Key Clubbers in the arena with us. There also was a guest speaker from the Oakland Children’s Hospital, and he thanked us for all our hard work. He told us a very touching story about how our fundraising had helped a family. After the rally, we went to lunch and all the way up until 8 o’clock that night, we had time to go throughout the park! Some friends and I rode many rides and I met a lot of Key Clubbers from all over; and we had so much fun singing chants and cheers! Fall Rally was amazing, and I had a lot of fun! I’m glad we got to help people in a way that included saving lives; and then it was so great to celebrate all that hard work with other divisions!

Kiwanis Vineyard Runs At the Vineyard Runs, we did a variety of tasks. Many of us served breakfast to runners when they finished; and a few of us cheered runners on and helped at the aide stations on the course. There were few different lengths of races. It was cold, but fun and Kiwanis gave us $351 for our efforts that day.

Cloverdale Imagination Library By Greg Carter Since its inception in March of 2012, the Cloverdale chapter of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has mailed 16,778 books to Cloverdale children, free of charge. As of November 30, 2018, 293 children are enrolled in the program, and each child receives a brand new, highquality book in the mail every month.

A Kiwanis Family Project

HUGS Project Off to a Great Start By Kayla Gallego My experience in helping with the HUGS Project has actually been a lot of fun. We have gone to the local convalescent hospital and played Bingo with the patients every Wednesday afternoon since the first week of October. Then, on the first Wednesday of November we even did a special project, instead of playing Bingo. We colored tiles with them, in order to make personal “coasters”. Playing with these patients has been such a fun experience because it’s nice to interact with people who so much appreciate us being there. Many of the By Kayla Gallego patients are very nice, like the woman I did the tiles with! For the tiles project we first cleaned themOktoberfest, with rubbing alcohol. Then, simply we each sat down with a patient At the there was from the hospital. We let them happiness; everyone was choose very colors kind from and squeeze bottles of alcoholbased inks. We helped them drop colors onto their tiles, then blew air through welcoming towards each other. My experience straws to make their tile designs.was Myvery patient help moving her hand in working alongside everyone fun! I needed met around, but she loved blowing through the straw and ended up really liking her so many amazing and kind people there, and tile design. even fooled around with some of the kids around my age. Being a food server was also a fun experience, since I was able to see so many people enjoying themselves!

Through “The Eliminate Project”, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of 34,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. We did it! We reached our fundraising goal, raising US$110 million in cash and pledges since 2010. However, our job is not done yet. Now, more than ever, we are determined to finish what we started. Mothers and babies in 14 countries are depending on Kiwanis. They’re waiting for us to fulfill our pledges—so we can turn promises into funding; funding into vaccines; and vaccines into lives saved and futures protected. The end of this disease means the beginning of better health for so many of these families.

Diverse-A-Dish Dinner By Miguel Gonzalez On the first Wednesday night of November we held a Diverse-ADish Dinner, for which families of Key Club members brought traditional dishes representing their cultures. We had a good turnout with many families, and Kiwanis showing up to the dinner. Before the dinner itself began, we sold donation drawing tickets for a variety of small items. That made $77. Alyssa Arrington gave a welcoming speech and then we began the dinner by recognizing some of our members and their families. After eating the delicious food, we showed a video about the importance of The Eliminate Project. Kayla Gallego gave a presentation that described why we support the project, and shared our fundraisers planned for that night. We had a donation jar, the drawing, and we took pictures and sold them with refrigerator magnet holders. In total we raised $259 that night. So, we saved 144 lives with that money!

Another time this month that we were thankful for our K-Family!

Key Leader By: Kayla Gallego Key Leader was a very fun at event go to!like In the Car camp, we& learned about what it Club Projects include: helping localto events Show the Oktoberfest; meant to bethe a Rain leader, how to in project our communities, and we also learned more about the Save project; thehelp HUGS at the convalescent hospital; Shine Days ourselves. learning eachchild of these things, we got to go into groups which we called our with theWhile Special Day Class, care for the Jefferson PTA, etc. “neighborhoods”, which was kind of awkward at first, because we were with kids we didn’t know. But soon we all warmed up to each other. And, that was actually one of the lessons we learned, that it was okay to get out of our comfort zones! We also went to a ropes course which was Projects a very fun experience! We went in groups of Meetings 9 and withwhere our groups we to do Division include: attending Division Council service is had done; a lot of teamwork to complete each course challenge. event was very funevents and I’m glad helping to re-build Sonoma County, (like Habitats for This Humanity); attending like I went! After that, on Saturday night we all had s’mores and spent time together. Overall, the Awake-A-Thon, etc. this event was amazing, because I learned so much, met new people who were very nice and wonderful, and had the opportunity to get to know more about myself. Key Leader was definitely worth going to! Region Projects include: going to the Region Training Conference. We only have 2 divisions in our region. The other division is north of us, and on the coastline, and includes Fortuna, McKinleyville, etc.

District Projects include: raising money for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP); helping at the Kiwanis Family House; “Bee Clean” (Keeping the environment clean); attending Fall Rally, attending the District Convention, etc.

International Projects include: March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network, UNICEF, the Eliminate Project, the Thirst Project, and project that benefits children, (“Focus on Children”), etc.

Western Nights By Grace Gloeckner Western Nights took place at the Citrus Fair. I had an extremely fun time. When I entered the Citrus Fair, it had been recreated into the old Western times, and it was incredible. The Citrus Fair did not look like the Citrus Fair that I know. It was set up with a big dining area in the middle of the room. There was a dance floor in the front and a bar in the back. Then, on the side of the room there were gambling tables for the adults. What I participated in was serving the food to the guests, picking up their dirty plates and utensils and refilling their glasses. When this event was over, I helped to pick up the dining area and clean the dishes. Overall, I believe that the evening was a huge success; and in my opinion, it was super fun. I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to get service hours next year!
