Caring–Our Way of Life
The core values of Key Club International are:
▪ Leadership ▪ Character
Building ▪ Caring ▪ Inclusiveness
I am in Mexico right now, with only spotty access to wi-fi. This time with my family, as we deal with losses that are hard to accept, has helped me to reflect on so much! We face challenges at every step of life.
Meeting Some Challenges Brings Sweet Rewards! Here’s a Challenge – Can You Meet the Criteria to Go to DCON? It’s the time of year when we all start getting serious about setting goals for ourselves and our club. 1. Do you want to go to District Convention 2018 (DCON)? a. If so, you may have to step up your service participation. b. 50 hours of service is desired c. $400 in Key Club Bucks is required 2. If going to DCON in Reno in April is something you want to do, then check out both your service record and your Key Club Bucks record by going to the club website at: https://www.cloverdalekeyclub.com/ member-only-page 3. If you are worried about earning service hours and/or Key Club Bucks, be sure to spend some time looking at page 30 of this newsletter. 4. Then, be sure to study all the pages coming after that, to get details about the many events coming up, so you can pick and choose what you want to do!
Birthday Bags
The Washington School Builders Club worked with the Cloverdale Key Club to put together 30 “Birthday Bags”. These were for families who go to our town’s Food Pantry, to use in celebration of a child’s birthday!
By Gaby Gaona | Cloverdale At our September Board meeting, we voted to join up with the Builders Clubbers from our middle school, and make “birthday goody bags” for the local Food Pantry. By doing this we are giving people in our community who can't afford to put on a birthday party for their children the opportunity to do just that! We put cake mix, frosting cans and candles, along with other birthday goodies, in the bags, to try and make their lives a bit more joyful. The plan was to get together with our Builders Club on Wednesday, October 10th. But, when school was closed due to the fires, we had to re-schedule. We set things up for Wednesday, October 25th, instead. We spent $150 on supplies and took them to their after-school Wednesday afternoon work session. We had planned to show up, too. But, they were done putting everything together before our school even let out for the day! We are so impressed with our Builders Club!
Each bag contained items like these It took this group of energetic Builders Clubbers all of 15 minutes to fill the 30 bags with birthday party supplies
By Neidi Calvillo Fall Rally North was the 21st of October this year and was held at Six Flags once more. It was a fun event, just like it is every year. We were a small division this year, mainly because of the North Bay Fires. Even though we were small, we made it to the 2nd round of the cheer battles. We took 11 Key Clubbers and 2 Kiwanians from our home club. We also took $960 for PTP. We had fun and were exhausted from all the cheering!
Fire Relief Project
Campus Fundraiser We held a campus fundraiser for fire victims and it lasted about a weekand-a-half. The school got very into it, especially Mr. Schmidt’s classes. Almost half the money raised by the whole campus was raised by his students, and totaled $308.The entire school brought in $746. There was a pizza party for 3 teachers’ classes and Papa’s Pizza generously donated almost $200 for the pizza. A Kiwanis member also donated $100, and our Key Club gave $200. Thanks to every student who donated to the Fire Relief Project!
Joint DCM with Kiwanis
By Gonzalo Perez We held a Joint Division Council Meeting with Kiwanis and Key Club at the Senior Center in Healdsburg. At first, we all met together. Tricia, the Key Club Region Advisor, gave a presentation about how to be a good leader. Basically, it was a comment on the fact that being brave enough to be the “first follower of someone whose actions we admire, is pretty important! After that Key Club went inside a different room and continued our individual DCM. During the time we met, we talked about going to the December DCM in Petaluma, what clubs should be doing during the month of November, a few details about District Convention, and more. We did a service project where we made blankets for homeless people, and we made thank you cards for the firefighters.
Gaby Gaona helped at the October elementary school PTA meeting by providing child care to the children of the parents attending
Anahi Ruiz is shown here working with a child at the September Jefferson School PTA meeting
By Gaby Gaona On a Thursday evening in October, I volunteered to help at the Jefferson School PTA meeting by doing child care for the attending parents. Once there, I helped entertain a couple of children by reading books to them and coloring with them. It was a struggle at first, but I got the hang of it after a couple of minutes. That was because it took a while for the kids to warm up to me; but once they did, it was all sunflowers and sunshine. I had a blast and their parents were very grateful. Helping at our elementary school’s PTA meeting is an on-going project for us; every month, a member is there to work with the children.
The start of the 10 K race
By Neidi Calvillo The Cloverdale Kiwanis Vineyard Races seem to almost always be the day after Fall Rally North. It is really hard to get up at 6 in the morning the day after FRN. The good thing is that, despite this fact, this year 10 of our Key Clubbers were able to get up and go help our Kiwanis club with this event. We all helped with set-up at the finish line area where the runners were given a space to relax and enjoy music, good food and more, as they wound-down from their physical efforts. After that, my job was to be at a table for Fire Relief efforts, where runners could donate money, food, or even running shoes. Some of the Key Clubbers were out on the course handing out water, while others helped serve food to the runners and their families after they had crossed the finish line. It felt really good to help our Kiwanis with this project. It’s especially nice because all the money they raised this year either went to literacy programs for children, or to the Fire Relief efforts.
It was pretty cold that early in the morning. Here are several of our members right after having helped set up the finish line eating area.
Save the Rain: Kiwanis Next Steps Take-Over Meeting
By Katelyn Wilson On the Thursday morning of Key Club Week ten of our members got up bright and early to attend the 7 a.m. Kiwanis meeting! It was our annual take-over meeting, where we actually “ran” the event. Neidi Calvillo, the club Vice President, was in charge, and she did an amazing job! We missed our club President, Anahi Ruiz; but we knew that she was unable to be there, and Neidi represented us well as she followed the Kiwanis agenda! Since the Kiwanis members are always so welcoming, that made it easier for us, and so much less stressful. During the meeting, Gaby Gaona and Jessica Aguirre taught them how to do the Key Club “Re-mix” Cheer, since they already knew the “How Do You Feel?” one! Alex Visconti spent time thanking our Kiwanis for all they do for us. We then gave each of them a small pastry gift. The real fun started with our “Pound Auction”. That was our program for the day, and we made quite a bit of money for The Eliminate Project, $320! It was fun to see people laughing and smiling at the things they bought. The gifts were brought by the Key Clubbers and purchased by the Kiwanis members. The idea was to wrap up something that weighed about one pound, and auction it off, sight unseen. Some items were “nice” and others some were “not-so-nice”. One Kiwanis member bought a block of wood, and another ended up spending $20 on a rock! Overall, the meeting was very productive and full of laughter.
October Shine Day
The last Friday of October, we made Halloween arts and crafts with the Special Day Class. We all had pumpkin pie with whipped cream in Room 21. Key Club helped the class make Halloween masks as well as making some of their own. It was lots of fun and we can’t wait to do something new next month.
