Putting Together a Traditional Scrapbook
It must have an original theme that is carried out in the following ways: Cover art Graphics on all divider pages Graphics on all pages Captions Any place possible It should be pervasive throughout the book
Examples of Traditional Scrapbook Cover Art
This book took 2nd place in international competition
There was a flap that opened to show the section below
The 2016 CNH 1st Place Cover Art – Representing CNH at the 2016 International Competition in July
This book was 1st place in international competition. The front had a book like flap that opened up to show the theme
This treasure themed book took 2nd place in international competition
A plain cover with just a picture on it usually doesn’t bring in many points
Scrapbook covers should be creative and unique
Scrapbooks are judged primarily by other Key Clubbers, so do a cover that will appeal to teens
Examples of Using A Theme in Scrapbook Pages
This book had the “Reach for the Stars” theme and there were stars on EVERY page.
A divider page in the “star theme book
A title page using a music theme
A caption that followed the book theme…. which was, “Once Upon A Service Project”
In the music-themed book, EVERY caption had a music-themed title that somehow seemed to make sense with the activity
In the book with the treasure theme, the word “treasure was worked into a lot of the captions
Even the “tabs” should follow the book theme

How Big is the Book?
It doesn’t have to be a square book, as long as NO side is bigger than 14”
They actually use a tape measure when in doubt as to whether a book is too large
Many purchasable scrapbook covers are the correct size

Is There a Budget?
May 1, 2016
A Cost Sheet must be completed and affixed
to the inside front cover of the scrapbook containing the following: Key Club name, Division, Region, District, city, state, and an itemized statement of the total expenditures and donations. If this Cost Sheet is not affixed to the inside front cover of the scrapbook, the judges will deduct ten points. This statement must be signed by the Key Club president and faculty advisor. The statement gives the scrapbook’s retail cost value (including photographic materials). The cost must NOT exceed the amount of US$200. Work done by Key Club members such as hand-lettering, artwork, etc. need not be included as cost items. You may end up paying for some supplies that are not used in the book; those supplies do not have to be listed. o Examples: unused pictures, unused extra stickers, etc.
You MUST put a price on donated materials,
although it does not have to be “FULL RETAIL” price.

What About Page Numbers & Table of Contents?
Do these close to last and try to incorporate the theme in the page numbers, if possible
These were the page numbers for the music themed book
These were the page numbers for the star themed book
Sometimes in might be impossible to incorporate the theme into the page numbers, so in this case the scrapbooker incorporated the colors on the page
The Table of Contents is pretty much the last thing to be done, after having affixed the page numbers.

What About Digital Scrapbooks?
You can use a commercial program or you can create something all on your own
This digital scrapbook was created for club use, not for competition. The “Mixbook” program was used.
Here’s what a few of the pages looked like….
\
The biggest advantage to doing a digital scrapbook is that you can make multiple copies. You could: Give a copy to every graduating senior as a gift Sell the copies to members Give the copies to members, if you can figure out how to pay for them

What About Non-Traditional Scrapbooks?
NonTraditional Scrapbooks can be as exciting as your imagination
This international 1st place winner had a jar for each category. Inside the jar were wooden pieces shaped like candy bars. Each bar was covered in foil and then had a label. The front of the label had the name of the event and pictures from the event. The back of the label was made to look like a nutrition table, with statistics of how many attended, the service hours accumulated, etc. The “ingredients list was a description of the project.
