This is turning into the year of the giant yellowfin – and, apparently, they fancy the waters off Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Sólo un par de meses después de que Ron Tegland tuvo un ejemplar de aproximadamente 432 libras a bordo de su Monterey de 65 pies “Tenacious”, el Capitán Russell O’neil ha pesado a otro aleta amarilla gigante de 427.9 libras, a bordo del Journeyman.

Only a couple months after Ron Tegland took an estimated 432-pounder aboard his 65-foot Monterey, Tenacious, Capt. Russell Oneil has weighed in another giant yellowfin, a 427.9-pounder, aboard the Journeyman.

El capturado por Robert Pedigo, propietario del barco, fue pescado con un Shimano Tiagra 50W II cargado con línea de 130 libras, Jerry Brown, en una plataforma double-trouble, con dos caballitos, bajo una cometa.

Puerto Vallarta has become a mecca for huge yellowfin in recent years, as Sport Fishing reported in the October 2005 issue. H o w e v e r, Tegland’s fish — caught in late January 2011 — was not submitted as an official IGFA record, as it apparently did not meet all IGFA’s requirements.

Hábitat: El Atún Aleta Amarilla es una especie altamente migratoria y distribuida alrededor del mundo en aguas tropicales y sub-tropicales. En el Pacífico son encontrados entre los 40°N y 40°S. En el Atlántico se encuentran entre los 45°N y los 45°S. Sus patrones migratorios indican que viajan desde las costas del Pacífico Norteamericano hasta Japón. Los Aleta Amarilla son una especie oceánica que se mueve arriba y abajo de las termoclinas. Se agrupan principalmente por tamaño, ya sea en bancos monoespecíficos o de diversas especies. Los ejemplares más grandes suelen agruparse con Delfines. Descripción: El cuerpo es grueso y pesado pero ágil. Description: The body is thick and heavy, but streamlined. It has a deep indigo blue back ( dorsal side), changing to yellow and silvery white on the belly. A yellow band extends down the side, and the belly sometimes has up to 20 vertical broken lines, a characteristic not found on other tuna, but not always noticeably present on Yellowfin tuna. Large fish are easily identified by the sweeping yellow tipped crescent-shaped extensions of the anal and second dorsal fins. Yellowfin tuna are gregarious mating and munching monsters of the deep. They are fairly long-lived, some reach sexual maturity during their first year, although most are age two to three years old when they first spawn. They spawn several times a year in the open sea at temperatures above seventy eight F. A five-foot long female can lay as many as eight million eggs at one time. These tuna feed on an extended variety of smaller fish, squids, shrimp, and crabs and fortunately for us artificial lures. They are very excellent sight hunters, but can also actually smell their prey. Fish leave a scent trail in the water consisting of oils, proteins, and amino acids from the slime layer on their bodies. Tiny traces of this wash off of the fish. When Yellowfin tuna pick up this scent trail, they can lock into it and track their prey at quite high speeds.

Yellowfin tuna make both seasonal and daily migrations. In the Pacific Ocean, they are often found on the edges of islands shelves, coral reefs or seamounts during the day. Each night, they travel up to nine miles offshore to feed and then return to the exact same spot the next day. That’s the equivalent, in human terms, of walking about forty miles each night for dinner. Studies using tagged tunas in the open sea show similar behavior. Yellowfin will hang around floating debris during the day, travel many miles at night, and return to the exact same floating debris, log or whatever the next day. How do they find these things after they have left it floating in the current all night? In some tropical countries fisherman carry out great piles of palm fronds and toss them in the sea to float and attract tuna and other fish.

Tunas (and a few sharks, like the Great White) have developed the ability to control their body temperature through a network of veins and arteries called a “rete mirabile” that traps (and dumps) body heat. Even smaller tunas can maintain temperatures twenty degrees Fahrenheit higher than surrounding water temperatures. This is a huge advantage. For most cold-blooded fish, the colder the water and therefore their body is, the slower and more sluggish they are. Tu n a s ’ w a r m e r body temperatures speed up the chemical reactions in their body that produce energy and allow their muscles to contract more quickly. This provides faster swimming speeds and increases their endurance. Tunas take a larger proportion of dissolved oxygen from the water than do most other fish. The surface area of the gill filaments, the oxygen-gathering organ, approaches that of the respiratory surface area, found in the lungs of mammals of similar weight. The concentration of oxygen-transporting hemoglobin is as high in tunas as in humans. Better to kick your ass with my friend. No other fish can swim as far or as fast as Tunas. Water has a great deal of resistance or drag, so every eight-fold increase in swimming speed takes a 100-fold increase in energy. Sport Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna in Puerto Vallarta: Is world class with good-sized schools of fish that frequent the hot spots around Banderas Bay. Drifting or slow Trolling with a good balanced offshore combo in the 50-pound to 80-pound test line class with live bait (caballitos, chihuil, mackerel, mullet, sardines, etc.) on trolled feathers or hoochies, or off the bottom with live bait or yo-yo iron. Yellowfin eaten raw doesn’t have the premier reputation of bluefin tuna sashimi, but don’t pass it up if you like sashimi. And marinated yellowfin steaks on the grill are thought by some to be best among the large pelagics. Warning! El Artista detras de la pintura The Artist behind the paint Jose Baldi artista plástico nace en Tepotzotlán México en 1964, su infancia transcurre con modestos reconocimientos escolares y es en la carrera de arquitectura en 1982 donde descubre su profesión. Inspirada en vistas del desaparecido colegio jesuita, la obra inicial del artista se componía principalmente de acuarelas que paulatinamente se iban recomendando entre un reducido grupo de familiares y amigos quienes lo motivaron a ir más lejos y de esa manera llegar a exponer en 1998 en las galerías “Alberto Mizrachi” de la Cd de México. El consolidado autor, cuenta para el año 2000 con varios murales en iglesias y escuelas y gracias a su innata capacidad de resolver y experimentar con técnicas y materiales, hace la decoración de gran cantidad de restaurantes de primer nivel en el DF, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancún, Miami FL y Singapur. En 2005 en una visita de trabajo para hacer la decoración del restaurant “Trío” y el casino “Jack” en plaza península, el artista queda deslumbrado por la gran calidad de producción artística de Vallarta y finalmente en 2006 da el difícil paso de dejar atrás su bien provisto taller e iniciar una nueva etapa de su vida en este bello puerto. Para 2008 cuenta con una pequeña galería en la marina Vallarta pero la crisis de la influenza lo obligan a cerrarla al bajar dramáticamente las ventas. Durante una exposición en 2009 los directivos del club de pesca identifican el cuadro del marlín que sería la imagen del 55º torneo de pesca. En la actualidad con 22 exposiciones y más de 1600 obras vendidas la obra se consolida con una técnica muy propia elaborada principalmente en acrílico con espátulas y gracias al apoyo de amigos que han valorado su constancia, abre en junio pasado su propia galería: “JOSE BALDI STUDIO & GALLERY” ubicada en: Blvd Francisco Medina #1851, Las Glorias, donde el artista podrá deleitarnos con una colección de paisajes, bodegones, figura humana, etc. todas ellas bajo la mirada de quien busca contagiarnos de la belleza que a diario vemos pero no admiramos.

Ley de Pesca Deportiva en Mexico

Sport Fishing Law in Mexico

En México se destinan exclusivamente a la pesca deportiva, dentro de una franja de 50 millas náuticas contadas a partir de la línea de base desde la cual se mide el Mar Territorial, un total de 9 especies: 6 denominadas como “Picudos” (4 tipos de Marlin; Pez Vela y Pez Espada) además del Sábalo, Pez Gallo y Pez Dorado. Queda Prohibido realizar actos de pesca comercial al amparo del permiso de pesca deportiva o simular actos de pesca deportiva con el propósito de lucro. Se prohíbe también el fileteo a bordo y solo podrán destinarse a su consumo doméstico o para su montaje en taxidermia. Es obligación del pescador deportivo contar con su permiso de pesca deportiva, los que se expedirán a personas físicas nacionales o extranjeras, tanto individuales como por embarcación, de acuerdo a la Ley Federal de Derechos.

Mexico has selected nine fish species and reserved them exclusively for the activity of sport fishing practiced in the area located within the first 50 nautical miles measured from the sea-shore. Six of these species are commonly known as “Picudos” (Billfish), these include 4 species of Marlin; Sailfish and Swordfish, in addition to Tarpon fish, Roosterfish and Mahi-mahi (also known as Dorado). Sport fishing permits strictly prohibits any commercial fishing activity or making any monetary gain from their use.
