WELCOME TO

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the great State of Tennessee, the 47th annual I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to the fans, cma awards participants and guests of The 47th Annual CMA Awards. We are honored that the CMA Awards has again chosen to host “Country Music’s Biggest Night” in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium, and Grand Ole Opry. For more than fifty years Tennessee has been the proud home of the songwriters, publishing companies, music producers, session musicians, recording engineers, recording artists, and countless other contributors of the Country Music Industry. Crissy and I offer our thanks and best wishes to all of these artists and industry professionals as well as all those being honored by these awards tonight. We encourage you to continue sharing your musical talents and Southern Hospitality as you travel around the world serving as ambassadors of one our great state’s most valued resources – Country Music. I invite all Tennesseans to join me in thanking the Country Music Industry for all they have done to make Tennessee an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. Again, Crissy and I are glad to welcome all those involved with the CMA Awards and are proud that music’s greatest city is again hosting “Country Music’s Biggest Night.” Warmest regards,

Bill Haslam, Governor of Tennessee

Dear Country Music fans: As Mayor of Music City, it is a pleasure to welcome each of you to Nashville as you take part in the 47th Annual CMA Awards. We are honored, along with the Country Music Association, to celebrate the extraordinary art of Country music, its artists and fans. This is not only Country Music’s Biggest Night for artists and industry professionals but also for loyal fans present and watching from home. Whether you are visiting us for the first time or have been to Nashville before, I am certain that you will have the opportunity to experience the Southern hospitality and friendliness that our city is famous for. While in Music City, I encourage you to visit our city’s many landmarks, including the brand new Music City Center, which is steps away from Nashville’s world class hotels, gourmet restaurants and live music venues. Please also consider visiting our cultural sites, like the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and historical sites, such as the Hermitage (home of President Andrew Jackson) and Fort Negley. In addition, I encourage you to round out your visit with a stop by the Parthenon, one of our most beloved icons, located in beautiful Centennial Park. It is my sincere wish that your visit is a great success and you have the opportunity to experience firsthand why Rolling Stone Magazine selected Nashville the No. 1 live music scene in the country and Condé Nast Traveler named Nashville one of five cities to visit in 2013. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you back in years to come. Best regards,

Karl F. Dean, Mayor of Nashville

WELCOME TO the 47th annual cma awards

Dear Friends and Fans, Welcome to “The 47th Annual CMA Awards” live from Nashville, Tenn. on the ABC Television Network. It is with great pleasure and an honor to share with you “Country Music’s Biggest Night!” The CMA proudly acts as the tie that binds together an entire Country community working tirelessly to bring America’s music to fans around the world. We welcome all of you, fans and industry alike, as we recognize and celebrate the musical achievements and entertainment excellence of our 2013 CMA Awards nominees. As an industry, we not only look back tonight to the outstanding work of the genre’s recording artists, but we also hold up the outstanding work of the producers, directors, musicians, songwriters, radio stations and all the many men and women who work behind the scenes creating, marketing and promoting Country Music worldwide. I, along with our CMA Board of Directors, CMA Board President Ed Hardy and the CMA staff, congratulate all our honored nominees for their limitless passion and effort in reaching new audiences. For the past five years, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have brought their never-ending enthusiasm and talent to the show each year, and for that we thank them. As they host their sixth consecutive show, the many hours of writing, preparation, promotion and rehearsals that it takes to host this show deserves a round of applause. Carrie and Brad are representatives of the greatest talent in Country Music, and exemplify the strength and future of this genre. I also express my gratitude to our Executive Producer Robert Deaton for his passion and creativity, and to everyone at ABC for their important partnership with CMA in delivering America’s music to the world. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as CMA Chairman of the Board and to work with such gifted and creative talent. I can’t imagine a vocation that could bring me more joy and fulfillment. Thank you for making “Country Music’s Biggest Night” part of your lives. Enjoy the show!

Troy Tomlinson, CMA Board Chairman

Dear Fans and Friends, On behalf of the Country Music Association, the Board of Directors, and the more than 6,500 CMA members worldwide, it is my pleasure to welcome you to “The 47th Annual CMA Awards,” broadcast live from Music City, U.S.A. on ABC. Tonight is an exciting time for the entire Country Music community, as we gather to recognize those who have achieved the highest levels in the genre. The CMA Award is a unique recognition of excellence that has become Country’s pinnacle of achievement since the first Awards took place in 1967 at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville. Today, the crystal CMA Award is the ultimate career milestone for the Country artists, songwriters, directors and producers who work year-round to delight and entertain fans worldwide. There is no better illustration of the dedication and excellence in the Country genre than through the work of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, who are celebrating their sixth consecutive year as cohosts. We are grateful for the time they spend away from their own highly successful careers to prepare for this special night. We are fortunate to have them as ambassadors for Country Music, and we cannot thank them enough for the passion, joy and humor they bring each year to the CMA Awards. The CMA Awards is also about recognizing excellence among our constituents, and that includes the many radio professionals who are a vital link between artists and fans. We honor the best in Country radio with the CMA Broadcast Awards during the pre-broadcast. To the CMA members, the media, our corporate partners, and all the dedicated fans tuning in around the globe, we’re delighted to have you with us tonight to take part in one of the Country’s grandest traditions. Now, it’s time to celebrate! Enjoy the show!

HERE IS A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THEIR GREATEST HITS.

2008 Brad: “Some of the all-time greatest men of Country have hosted this show, so I’ve got some massive, and I mean HUGE, boots to fill. Also, I believe Dolly [Parton] hosted the show once, so good luck [said to Carrie].” Carrie: “You know that’s way too much for me to live up to.”

2009 Brad: “Country songs are about real people, real life, real feelings and that makes them truly, truly timeless. Who can forget this Country classic…” BRAD & CARRIE sing: “Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be Kanye. Let ‘em pick guitars and drive them old trucks. ‘Cause cowboys have manners, they don’t interrupt.”

2010 Carrie: “Each year, millions of people around the world become innocent victims of identity theft and that is no laughing matter.” BRAD (to Jeff Gordon): “Jeff, what do you think you’re doing?” Jeff Gordon: “I’m not Jeff Gordon, I’m Brad Paisley.” Brad: “Alright, prove it. Sing something right now.” Jeff: “C’mon, man. Everybody knows Brad Paisley lip-syncs.”

2011 Brad: “This is our fourth year hosting, so I thought I would get you something tonight Carrie to say ‘thanks.’” Carrie: “Thanks, Brad, I got you something too.” Brad: “That’s amazing…and somehow so believable.” [opening presents] Carrie: “Faith Hill Barbie, O-M-G!” Brad:“TIM McGRAW BARBIE! TIM McGRAW BARBIE!”

Brad: “Oh no, Carrie.” Carrie: “What is that?” Brad: “It’s happening.” Carrie: “No, it better not happen. Brad: “I can’t control it!” Carrie: “The last time, you hurt yourself. Just say no! Earmuffs!” Brad: “But if they play it, I won’t be able to…” [Begin dancing to “Gangnam Style”]

carrie underwood knew exactly the treatment she wanted for the video “Blown Away.” "when I first heard the song, I just had visions of what I wanted it to be like,” underwood said. “And I really wanted it to be a dark 'Wizard of Oz' in 2012 kind of thing." The video opens with a dark, cinematic black-and-white scene in a tattered home. underwood is the daughter of an abusive, alcoholic father who lies motionless on the couch of their home clutching an empty bottle of whiskey as a strengthening tornado approaches. while underwood seeks shelter in the cellar as the twister rages, she remembers every strike of her father’s fists and each part of the house is ravaged to the studs. She emerges from the cellar to a bright new dawning, her troubled past having been “blown away.” Source: CMT Insider, August 2013

lady Antebellum’s charles kelley and Dave haywood are looking for a good time in los Angeles. Bandmate hillary Scott wants to tag along, but the guys don’t want the “goody-two-shoes” Scott to be their buzzkill so they leave her at home alone. Determined to show the guys that she can get into just as much mischief as they can, Scott enlists friend Beth Behrs from Tv show “Two Broke Girls” with the goal to “get arrested.” The girls don an edgy look of leather and rockstar makeup and hit downtown, shoplifting their way through high end shops and taunting two dimwitted cops, Garcia & cash (played by haywood and kelley). ultimately, Behrs and Scott accomplish their goal as the pair gets carted away in the back of the patrol car.

Blake Shelton’s good-natured “redneck” party in the woods brings together the “Boys ‘Round here,” some ice cold beer and a star-filled cast of friends, including wife Miranda lambert, the other two Pistol Annies (Ashley Monroe and Angeleena Presley) and Country singer Raelynn (from Team Blake on the last season of “The voice”). filmed at the walt Disney Golden oak Ranch in Santa clarita, calif., the video features a low-rider full of rappers (who are all actors) in a friendly face-off with Shelton’s red jacked-up four wheel drive pickup truck. The video ends with both sides coming together in an urban/country hoedown, showing that there is nothing more universal than a good party.

“ H i g h way D o n ’ t Car e ” TiM McGRaw wiTH TayloR SwiFT and KEiTH URban directed by Shane drake

“Highway don’t Care” has a strong cinematic style, opening with a distraught girl who speeds off in her car. with tears in her eyes, the girl texts while driving, interspersed with scenes of Tim McGraw’s character texting on his phone from his urban loft. The girl’s car hugs the turns of the windy roads as Taylor Swift’s image is wistfully reflected in the windows and Keith Urban’s siren guitar solo builds towards the climax. Suddenly, McGraw rushes out of his house after receiving the latest text. The girl loses control of the car, flips, and is life-flighted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in nashville, where her connection to McGraw is revealed in a grim reminder of the dangers of texting and driving. “we didn’t start out to turn it into a public service announcement,” McGraw said, “but as it developed and i thought about my two teenage daughters, i didn’t mind being preachy.” Source: Music Row, May 7, 2013

what’s it like when a wealthy 1960s housewife starts slowly unraveling? Miranda lambert illustrates this special kind of crazy in the video for “Mama’s broken Heart.” lambert plays the domestic diva that by all accounts has the perfect life on the outside. but behind closed doors, the hair comes down, the cigarettes and booze come out, and she has what can only be described as a complete mental breakdown. it’s surely behavior her mama would frown upon. “The reason i love this song is because it’s about how sometimes when you get your heart broken, you kinda go a little bit crazy. you drink too much, you smoke too much, you cut your hair … you find a rebound. Sometimes your mama, if she’s like my mama, has to slap you around and say, ‘Straighten up, girl!’” Source: Theboot.com, March 2013

liTTlE biG Town directed by Shane drake

The dark, haunting scenes of little big Town’s “Tornado” video play out as a gothic revenge tale, but the revenge unfolds in a way that is unexpected. The four members of little big Town walk the streets of a small country town, and serve as a chorus at times as they personify a powerful “tornado.” Shopkeepers board up, and everyone heads inside, as the band marches toward a broken home where a man is leaving a female character and her two kids behind, pocketing jewelry as he’s headed out the door. but little big Town barrels through, determined to stop it. as he scrambles away, the man is ensnared by barbed wire; the members of little big Town walk over him, leaving him stuck behind. Two seemingly disconnected older residents, who were concerned and scanning the heavens for help with the impending destruction, are at peace with the outcome.

Jessi alexander, Connie harrington, and Jimmy Yeary Country music and U.S. military support often go hand-in-hand, with proud to be an american themes appearing frequently in Country tunes. But “i Drive Your truck” represents a different take on patriotic sentiment – with a deeply personal tone. the story follows a man dealing with death of his brother, who was killed in combat overseas. One day, songwriter Connie harrington was listening to NPr and heard a real life story about a father whose son, an army sergeant serving in afghanistan, lost his life saving one of his fellow soldiers. When asked how he coped without his son, the father stated simply that he drives his son’s truck. harrington, sobbing, started writing words down. She called Jessi alexander and Jimmy Yeary and crafted a song that was so emotional even one of the writers could hardly get through it. “Connie was very emotional. She cried the whole time we wrote this song. me and Jessi kind of joked that any line we threw out, if it didn't tear her up, it must not be right,” said Yeary. Source: alanna Conway, roughstock.com

this song full of sassiness and spice is everything that a miranda Lambert song should be – but Lambert almost didn’t get to cut it. One of the song’s co-writers, Kacey musgraves, was considering it for her own debut album. Lambert approached musgraves, whom she had known in their early days on the texas music circuit, at Lambert’s wedding and asked if she was going to cut the song. if not, she would like a shot. musgraves said she would think about it. “She e-mailed me, and said, ‘You can have it, if i can sing harmony,’" said Lambert. "So that’s her singin’ the harmonies on it … and so i’m thankful that she gave it to me ’cause i love ‘mama’s Broken heart.’”

Some people might think that small town life is clean, easy living. But “Merry Go ‘Round” proves that what is bubbling under the surface comes closer to the truth. "We all grow up with expectations of breaking the cycle of life as we know it, trying to appear as if all is perfect under the surface," co-writer Kacey Musgraves said. "Coming from a small, conservative Texas town I've grown up with this. We're all guilty of having something that keeps us distracted — no matter the vice. Our comfort zones make us settle and I think there's hope in knowing that everyone has felt this way." Having that experience help the words flow out of Mugraves and co-writers Josh Orborne and Shane McAnally, like they had always been there waiting to bubble up. "This was one of the fastest songs I've ever written," she said. "Once we wrapped our brains around the idea, the song kind of seemed to write itself." Source: Marissa R. Moss, American Songwriter

“ P O N TO O N ” Natalie Hemby, Luke Laird, and Barry Dean Little Big Town’s biggest hit song actually started because of a mistake. Co-writer Natalie Hemby came up with the title after her publisher misheard the title of another one of her songs, “Fine Tune” (recorded by Miranda Lambert). When [Natalie told that story], Luke and I looked at each other, then we all knew,” said co-writer Barry Dean. “Luke (Laird) started playing the groove. I started playing bass on a synth. Pretty soon Natalie sang the first line of the song. Natalie, who was quite pregnant, sat on the couch, held an SM58 and sang it once, and that was the work tape."

Darius Rucker’s big hit was actually written in two different parts at separate times in history…and the co-writers have never actually met. Legendary singersongwriter Bob Dylan recorded a demo of the chorus and melody as part of his Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack sessions in the early 1970s. The song was never included on the album, but years later Dylan released it as a bootleg. Chris Fuqua of Old Crow Medicine Show lent his tape to band mate Ketch Secor, who wrote verses to go with Dylan’s chorus. “We've been playing that song since we were like 17,” said Fuqua, “and it's funny because we've never met Dylan, but the song is technically co-written byB obD ylan.” Source: Patrick Donohue, The Island Packet

In March, the Country Music Association announced the three newest inductees into its Country Music Hall of Fame – Bobby Bare, “Cowboy” Jack Clement and Kenny Rogers. Bare was inducted in the “Veterans Era Artist” category, Rogers in the “Modern Era Artist” category. Clement was inducted in the “Non-Performer” category, which is awarded every third year in a rotation with the “Recording and/or Touring Musician Active Prior to 1980“ and “Songwriter” categories. Bare, Clement, and Rogers increase membership in the coveted Country Music Hall of Fame to 121 members. The Medallion Ceremony, where the inductees were officially made Hall of Fame members, was held in October at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. CMA created the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961 to recognize noteworthy individuals for their outstanding contributions to the format with Country Music’s highest honor. Inductees are chosen by CMA’s Hall of Fame Panels of Electors, which consist of anonymous voters appointed by the CMA Board of Directors.

Whether driving shuttles, managing lines at Fan Fair X, holding banners for the Kick-Off Parade, escorting media, wrangling talent, handing out samples, or performing hundreds of other tasks, volunteers give selflessly to make the Festival the world’s best Country Music festival. THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! CMA MUSIC FESTIVAL AND KTMP WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOUR HELP AND DEDICATION!

The first “CMA Awards Banquet and Show” was held in 1967. The CMA Awards was broadcast on NBC in 1968 — making it the longest running annual music awards program on network television. The show aired on NBC through 1971, on CBS from 1972 through 2005 and on ABC since 2006. “The 47th Annual CMA Awards” is a production of the Country Music Association.
