CMA AWARDS PROGRAM BOOK COVER ARTIST he CMA Awards Program Book includes cover art by artist Sunni Crum-Thompson, owner of East Nashville-based block printing company 30 Silent Mockingbirds. Sunni says she creates in her studio (lovingly called “theRoost”) through a relief block printing process. She carves designs into large blocks, applies ink, and then pressures the ink to paper by either hand pressing or etch pressing. Sunni says the small imperfections in her designs are a natural result of the print process, and notes “that a simple shadow in my original sketch may end up being a highlight on the print.” “One thing that sets carving a block apart from other mediums is that when mistakes are made there is no going back to erase/paint over the error,” Sunni says. “These ‘mistakes’ can lead to some interesting on-the-fly changes on the print. Usually this ends up being a good thing and at 30 Silent Mockingbirds the mindset is: ‘What’s meant to be, is meant to be.’”

he Country Music Association extends the warmest of welcomes to everyone taking part in the 48th installment of “Country Music’s Biggest Night™.” There are so many artists, producers, musicians, songwriters and directors who deserve the highest congratulations for making 2014 another successful year in Country! That includes superstars Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, who we proudly welcome back as hosts for the seventh consecutive year. In 1967, CMA held the first CMA Awards — known at the time as the “Banquet and Show” — to recognize the most deserving in our industry. Tonight we continue this Country Music tradition by honoring the genre’s best. But tonight is not only for handing out the coveted, iconic crystal Award. It is also about connecting fans worldwide with the music and stars we love. That is why CMA is providing unprecedented access, by joining our partners ABC Television Network for the first time ever in the exclusive CMA Backstage Pass. You can find this unique content through the WatchABC app in the Apple and Google Play stores, offering live, exclusive interviews and views of the Red Carpet — and in many markets, the ability to view the live Awards show! Throughout the night, we encourage you to Tweet, Facebook, Instagram, Vine and any other way you socialize using the hashtag #CMAawards to shine a light on Nashville and our amazing superstars! So, sit back, relax, and have a great time! Most importantly, from all of us at CMA, we hope you enjoy the show!

Welcome to Dear Friends, On behalf of the great State of Tennessee, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to the fans, participants, and guests of The 48th Annual CMA Awards. We are honored that the CMA Awards has again chosen to host “Country Music’s Biggest Night” in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium, and Grand Ole Opry. For more than fifty years Tennessee has been the proud home of the songwriters, publishing companies, music producers, session musicians, recording engineers, recording artists, and countless other contributors of the Country Music Industry. Crissy and I offer our thanks and best wishes to all of these artists and industry professionals as well as all those being honored by these awards tonight. We encourage you to continue sharing your musical talents and Southern Hospitality as you travel around the world serving as ambassadors of one our great state’s most valued resources — Country Music. I invite all Tennesseans to join me in thanking the Country Music Industry for all they have done to make Tennessee an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. Again, Crissy and I are glad to welcome all those involved with the CMA Awards and are proud that music’s greatest city is again hosting “Country Music’s Biggest Night.” Warmest regards,
Bill Haslam, Governor of Tennessee
Dear Country Music fans: As Mayor of Music City, it is a pleasure to welcome each of you to Nashville as you take part in the 48th Annual CMA Awards, the longest running, annual music awards program on network television. We are honored, along with the Country Music Association, to celebrate the extraordinary art of Country music, its artists and fans. This is not only Country music’s biggest night for artists and industry professionals, but also for loyal fans present and watching from home. I would like to recognize Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood and their dedication to the genre and Country Music’s Biggest Night, serving as hosts for the seventh consecutive year. Whether you are visiting us for the first time or have been to Nashville before, I am certain that you will have the opportunity to experience the Southern hospitality and friendliness that makes us famous. While in Music City, I encourage you to visit our city’s many landmarks, such as the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and historical sites such as the Hermitage (home of President Andrew Jackson) and Fort Negley. In addition, please consider visiting the Parthenon, one of our most beloved icons, located in beautiful Centennial Park. It is my sincere wish that your visit is a great success and you have the opportunity to experience firsthand why Rolling Stone Magazine selected Nashville as the No. 1 music scene in the country. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you back in years to come. Best regards, g

to the 2014 COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
Election to the Country Music Hall of Fame is country music’s highest honor, with new members elected annually by an anonymous panel of industry leaders chosen by the Country Music Association (CMA). The CMA created the accolade in 1961 to recognize significant contributions to the advancement of country music by individuals in both the creative and business communities. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is proud to exhibit the bronze plaques commemorating membership in a space and fashion befitting the honor.
HANK COCHRAN RONNIE MILSAP MAC WISEMAN Downtown Nashville, Tennessee • CountryMusicHallofFame.org Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is operated by the Country Music Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964. The Foundation also operates CMF Records, the Museum’s Frist Library and Archive, the CMF Press, Historic RCA Studio B, and Hatch Show Print.
Welcome to On behalf of the Country Music Association, the CMA Board of Directors and the 7,400 CMA members around the world, welcome to “The 48th Annual CMA Awards!” We gather tonight in Music City U.S.A. to celebrate Country Music’s Biggest Night. It is our time to honor Country Music’s brightest stars, and to celebrate the talented men and women who have achieved at the highest levels of our genre. The nominated artists, songwriters, musicians, producers and music video directors we recognize tonight have all devoted many hours to the craft of making and presenting America’s music. These talented people spend their lives in rehearsals, performances, touring on buses and airplanes, in studios and working with video and country radio — all in an effort to delight us by telling stories in Country songs. The first Awards were handed out in 1967 in Nashville in a gathering much smaller than this one, but always with an effort to honor. Today, as we hand out a crystal Award to the winners, it is recognized as the pinnacle achievement in Country Music. Its bullet shape – fashioned after the old radio chart bullets — is a strong and lasting reminder of Country radio’s importance in reaching fans around the globe. For decades, the influence of Country Music has crossed international borders, entertaining audiences everywhere, and that momentum continues as we head into 2015. Country is indeed in great hands, and has a bright outlook as we look to the genre’s up-and-coming talent. CMA itself is a proactive organization dedicated to advancing the music we all love. And that dedication and excellence is best exemplified tonight by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, our hosts for the seventh consecutive year. Thank you to both of you! We are fortunate to have them as ambassadors for Country Music, and we recognize them for the passion, joy and humor they bring to the Awards. Also, to our Executive Producer Robert Deaton — I extend my deepest gratitude for your creativity and dedication to making the CMA Awards Country’s biggest night. Also, to our great partners at ABC TV, our CMA Board and all of our members, we cannot thank you enough for the way you deliver a powerful show to the viewers at home. On behalf of the CMA Management, Staff and Board of Directors, I would like to extend the warmest welcome tonight as we share in one of Country’s grandest traditions — the CMA Awards! We hope you enjoy the show!
Edward Hardy CMA Board Chairman Welcome to the 48th Annual CMA Awards live from Nashville, Tenn. on the ABC Television Network. It is both my great pleasure and an honor to share with you Country Music’s Biggest Night! The CMA is the tie that binds the entire Country Music community as we bring America’s music to fans around the world. We enthusiastically welcome you, fans and industry alike, as we recognize and celebrate the musical achievements and entertainment excellence of our 2014 CMA Awards nominees. As an industry, we not only look back tonight to the outstanding work of the genre’s recording artists, but we also hold up the brilliant work of the producers, directors, musicians, songwriters, radio stations and all who work so effectively behind the scenes creating, marketing and promoting Country Music worldwide. I, along with the CMA Board of Directors, CMA Board Chairman Ed Hardy and the CMA staff, congratulate all of honored nominees for their limitless passion and effort in reaching new audiences. For the past six years, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have brought their never-ending enthusiasm and talent to the show. For that, we cannot thank them enough. As they host their seventh consecutive show, the many hours of writing, preparation, promotion and rehearsals that are required to host this show deserves a round of applause. Carrie and Brad are representatives of the enormous talent present in Country Music. They exemplify the strength and future of our genre. I also express sincere gratitude to our Executive Producer, Robert Deaton, for his passion and creativity. Well done, Robert! We are also most grateful for the terrific talent that ABC brings to its partnership with CMA in delivering America’s music to the world. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as President of CMA’s Board and to work with such gifted and creative talent. Thank yyou for makingg Countryy Music’s Biggest Night part of your lives. Enjoy the show!

Dear Fans and Friends, Welcome to “The 48th Annual CMA Awards!” It’s that time of year when we are privileged to honor members of our artistic Country Music community who have excelled at the highest levels in the genre. Although this is my first year as CMA CEO, I have spent the majority of my career working in the Country Music industry and, more specifically, television. I have enjoyed being a spectator during “Country Music’s Biggest Night” in the past, but now having seen the inner workings of this gala event, I can confidently say that the CMA Awards deserves that distinction. The passing of that iconic crystal trophy as a recognition of excellence has become Country’s pinnacle of achievement. It is a career milestone for the talented artists, musicians, songwriters, directors and producers who work incredibly hard to entertain millions of fans worldwide. On behalf of the entire CMA Staff, I would also like to extend congratulations to all of the CMA Awards nominees and CMA Broadcast Awards winners. You represent the best of our genre and are seen as leaders in the global music community. In our view, you are all winners. Our dedicated hosts Brad and Carrie are returning for lucky number seven! I’m amazed at the amount of time they give and commitment they have to making tonight a fun and entertaining three hours for everyone watching. Their humor and grace embody the very spirit of the CMA Awards, and they are outstanding ambassadors for the genre and CMA. Speaking of dedication and commitment, the many people who work behind-the-scenes — CMA staff members, Executive Producer Robert Deaton and the TV production crew, our partners at ABC, vendors, contractors, and volunteers — started working on this event the minute last one concluded. I am in awe over the amount and quality of work this team produces on a daily basis and I am proud to call them colleagues. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all CMA members, the CMA Board of Directors, our media and corporate partners, and all the dedicated fans joining us this evening in the audience and at home for truly making this “Country Music’s Biggest Night.” We hope you enjoy this celebration of America’s music!

MusicVideo of theYear Nominees “AUTOMATIC” Miranda Lambert; directed by Trey Fanjoy
S
trong feelings of nostalgia have Miranda Lambert searching through an old trunk of items in the attic for her “Automatic” music video. With each pocket watch, letter, and faded photograph she reflects and remembers what it was like to “do it all by hand.” She even stumbles upon a cassette tape recorder from the ‘90s, dusty from years without being used. Her scenic drive through the country in a beat up pick-up truck ends with her taking a Polaroid — or “the kind you gotta shake” — showing the charm and simplicity of going back in time and not rushing through life with too much technology.

hen one of her girlfriends – played by model Kate Upton – is feeling down, Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott leads a group of girls to a night out in the music video for “Bartender.” Upon arrival they soon find out the bartender wants to play a little game – each round challenging them with impressive and crazy drinks. The shots of the bar scenes are accompanied by Lady A performing the song in a room decked out with chandeliers. The enthusiastic bartender is played by “Arrested Development” and “Veep” star Tony Hale, who is cheered on by Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood as he tries to win the competition. Consistently surprised by their ability to drink anything he throws their way, the girls become the champions and he is left in a state of disbelief and defeat.

ased on the title of the song, Dierks Bentley’s “Drunk On A Plane” promises a fun music video and it does not disappoint. Bentley himself is a passenger on the plane, while the main focus of the video is the character that has been dumped and is consequently going on his honeymoon solo. The man starts ordering as many drinks as he can, and soon the “Mardi Gras in the clouds” kicks into full gear. He rides a drink cart down the aisle while Bentley strums his guitar along to the song. When the turbulence hits and the plane starts going down, no thanks to the pilot (played by a disguised Bentley) who ends up knocked out, the real Bentley comes to the rescue and guides the aircraft to safety. The main character’s story ends well too, as he forgets about his ex and finds new romance in the sky. WES EDWARDS

i
n the video for “Follow Your Arrow,” Kacey Musgraves incorporates her love for the desert and Southwestern inspired clothing. Making sure to play off of the jokes that are the most entertaining parts of the song, Musgraves has fun with the set and her band throughout the video. Light up arrows and cacti play prominent roles, while an excited priest and another character add some extra dancing into the mix. Musgraves also deals with an uncooperative pony and sees the words “Follow Your Arrow” written out in alphabet soup — both emphasizing the carefree elements of the song, while the messages of doing what you want and being who you are still remain at the forefront. “SOMETHIN’ BAD” Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood; directed by Trey Fanjoy
M
iranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood team up for adventures in their video for “Somethin’ Bad.” At the start, Lambert plays a bank teller with Underwood. Mixed with scenes of them performing the song against a police lineup backdrop, it’s clear that the two have a plan up their sleeves. Next they get dressed up for a game of blackjack, looking like they’re ready to win. The two blondes then get decked out in black leather outfits for motorcycle rides. The real action begins when they start stealing money and jewelry from the bank, and as they exit, the bank bursts into flames behind them. Back at the blackjack game they bet all in and win the money, making the rest of the table furious. The video ends like the closing of a movie trailer as they step out of shiny cars and escape in a helicopter.

MIRANDA LAMBERT NICOLLE GALYON
ritten with Natalie Hemby and Nicolle Galyon, ‘Automatic’ shows Miranda Lambert’s softer side, painting a nostalgic picture of growing up in a simpler time — using pay phones, having to drive to the big city to buy an Easter dress and learning to drive a stick shift. “‘Automatic’ is a song about the good life,” Lambert states. “It’s about slowing down, taking a breath and remembering what it’s like to live life a little more simply. It’s not about going back, but reminiscing about what it was like to hang laundry on the line and wait for it to dry and my dad teaching me how to drive my ’55 Chevy that I still have but don’t drive nearly enough.”She adds, “The song brings back good memories and it reminds me to take a deep breath and to remember that getting there is half the fun.” Source: The Boot

o-written by Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, the track is near and dear to Musgrave’s heart as it started as a gesture for a close friend. “It started off as a poem, honestly, for this friend who was going off to Paris for four months studying and she was leaving everything she knew behind, going to a foreign country [and] didn’t know the language,” Kacey said. “I gave her this little arrow necklace and I wrote a little poem and it had ‘follow your arrow’ in it, ‘kiss lots of boys,’ and it kind of started there, but it turned into a bigger idea.” “I think the song ‘Follow Your Arrow’ is the most me as far as where my brain is at or where my mindset is at about life and people in general,” she told Radio.com earlier this year. “It’s one that maybe six years ago I couldn’t have written. I had a different outlook but just growing and learning more about people and life, it’s just allowed to write that. It’s about just doing whatever you want, regardless of what society is going to say.”

uke Laird co-wrote the song with Eric Church, and reveals to Roughstock the inspiration behind the day they wrote the song. “We wrote it last year,” Laird said. “It was in March. He went up to his cabin in North Carolina, which he did before the last record, too. He stays out there for probably a month or two and just writes songs. He has different writers come out there and write with him. I went up there and we wrote five songs in two or three days. That was one of them. He had that idea, and he already knew that he wanted to write a song called ‘Give Me Back My Hometown.’ I just thought it was a great idea, so we went from there.

I was trying to keep it a secret, but then I had to play it out one night. And she got mad, because I was playing it out before we got married.” Brice can’t quite bring himself to call “I Don’t Dance” a ‘wedding song’ per se, but he does hover around the concept, eventually admitting that it’s “kind of a wedding sort of a thing.” “It’s a tough guy being a tough guy going, ‘Look, I don’t dance, but I’ll dance with you, I’ll do whatever you want me to.’” Source: Radio.com

The chorus is really universal…it’s about faith, love and freedom…I don’t think there’s a Country fan out there who doesn’t live with those as big priorities. I hope through this song I’m able to let the fans into my heart and my mind a little more, and that they can also relate it back to themselves and their own lives.”

n April, the Country Music Association announced the three newest inductees into its Country Music Hall of Fame — Hank
Cochran, Ronnie Milsap and Mac Wiseman. Milsap was inducted in the “Modern Era Artist” category, while Wiseman was inducted in the “Veterans Era Artist” category. Cochran was inducted in the “Songwriter” category, which is awarded every third year in a rotation with the “Recording and/or Touring Musician Active Prior to 1980” and “Non-Performer” categories. Cochran, Milsap and Wiseman increase membership in the coveted Country Music Hall The Medallion Ceremony, where the inductees were officially made Hall of Fame members, was held in October at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. CMA created the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961 to recognize noteworthy individuals for their outstanding contributions to the format with Country Music’s highest honor. EDDY ARNOLD AND HANK COCHRAN AT RCA STUDIO B RECORDING "MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY"
• Born Garland Perry “Hank” Cochran on Aug. 2, 1935 in Isola, Miss. • After his parents’ divorce at age nine, moved to Memphis to live with his father • Facing Depression-era difficulties, his father placed him in St. Peter’s Orphan home. After his third attempt at running away from the orphanage, his father took him back to Mississippi to be raised by his grandparents • At age 10, he played guitar and sang at church • At 12, hitchhiked with his uncle from Mississippi to New Mexico to work in the oilfields • Headed to Los Angeles at 14 and got a job at a Sears & Roebuck, though they made him return to school since he wasn’t 16 • Entered various amateur talent contests with much success. The rock ‘n’ roll duo The Cochran Brothers was then formed with guitar player Eddie Cochran; they had minor success and disbanded • Moved to Nashville in 1960 and worked as a songwriter for Pamper Music. Penned “Make the World Go Away” that year — recorded by both Ray Price and Eddie Arnold • Additionally helped Pamper Music sign songwriters, acquire songs and get them recorded. Willie Nelson was among his signings, whom he discovered singing at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge • In 1961 Patsy Cline released Cochran’s co-written “I Fall to Pieces,” allowing him to become a full time songwriter • Played guitar with Justin Tubb at the Grand Ole Opry, toured with Price, and scored his first hit as an artist with the Top 20 “Sally Was a Good Old Girl” • Earned three BMI Awards for his own songs and became a co-owner of Pamper Music with Price • Unanimously voted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1974 • In 1996, topped the Americana chart as a recording artist with Desperate Men: The Legend and the Outlaw. In 2002 released Livin’ For a Song: A Songwriters Autobiography • His songs have been recorded by various artists including Chet Atkins, Junior Brown, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Elvis Presley, Reba, Linda Ronstadt and George Strait • Penned some of music’s classic tunes including “She’s Got You,” “Set ‘Em Up Joe,” “The Chair,” “Miami, My Amy,” and “Ocean Front Property” • His catalog has generated more than 36 million peformances, which, if played back-to-back, would amount to over 200 years of continuous airplay • Cochran passed away on July 15, 2010 surrounded by friends, family, and music — Jamey Johnson, Billy Ray Cyrus and Buddy Cannon were passing a guitar around in his bedroom, singing songs

MAC WISEMAN
∂ • Born Malcolm B. “Mac” Wiseman on May 23, 1925, in Crimora, Va. • Contracted polio at 6 months old, which he felt was a blessing; he was kept inside and was not subjected to field work like many children of the rural Shenandoah Valley. • His father would set the phonograph up by the wood stove and Wiseman would listen to old records over and over; his mother wrote the lyrics she heard on the radio into composition books for him. • Decided to pursue music in 1943 when he was turned down for a job at the Merck and Co. chemical plant because of polio damage to his leg • Attended the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Virginia with help from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which later became the March of Dimes. He excelled in a radio course and accepted a job offer from WSVA in Harrisonburg, Va., where he read the news and farm reports and spun pop and Country records. • In 1946, joined Molly O’Day’s band, where he developed a love of classic Country • In 1948, made his first foray into bluegrass music. He joined Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs as a member of the Foggy Mountain Boys, singing high harmonies and booking the band’s first concert dates. • In 1949, joined Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys; played the Grand Ole Opry for the first time and recorded classics like “Traveling This Lonesome Road” with Monroe • In 1951, independent label Dot Records released Wiseman’s first single, “Tis Sweet To Be Remembered,” which became a career-making song and earned him the name the “voice with a heart” • Went on to record classics, including “Love Letters in the Sand,” “Jimmy Brown, the Newsboy,” “Ballad of Davy Crockett” and “Shackles and Chains” • Tapped in 1957 as an executive to head the Country Division of Dot Records • In 1958, was instrumental in the founding of the Country Music Association, becoming CMA’s first Secretary/Treasurer • During the 1960s he was a staple on the folk festival circuit and on college campuses. Also played Carnegie Hall in 1962 on a bill headlined by Johnny Cash • Was Program Producer and Talent Director for the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree from 1966 to 1971 • Most recently, has released his music on his own Wise Records including a six-disc boxed set, The Mac Wiseman Story, featuring songs he recorded in the 1970s and a DVD collection called “Mac Wiseman — An American Treasure” • In 2007, recorded a duet album with John Prine, Standard Songs for Average People, released by Oh Boy Records • In 2014 completed an album with Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and The Isaacs set for an upcoming release • In 2014 he was the first inductee into the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music Hall of Fame
