C! is for Content The medium has changed irrevocably. The message has not.
I
do not work for C! Magazine. I have written several articles for them over the years, and it seems they call me whenever an anniversary comes up, because, as an inside/outsider, I have a unique perspective on this particular mob. Five years ago, the last paragraph I wrote for this magazine’s 15th anniversary read: “It’s hard to say what lies in store for the brand at this digital crossroads. I have every confidence that they will navigate this expertly. At the end of the day, quality will be their strongest weapon. C! has been all about quality. On to the next 15!” That article, written in 2016, was a nostalgic and slightly sentimental look at what had come before. This time, I’m not even putting sentiment and nostalgia in the back seat, I’m stashing them in the trunk, bound and gagged. This is a time for a cold, hard look at the content business, which has become a struggle for survival. This is not a heavenly choir singing praises to the C! brand, this is more like the hot seat in the principal’s office. When I wrote that 15th anniversary paragraph, the magazine business in this country was already embattled. The boom of the early 2000’s ,which saw dozens of new titles, had imploded into a long and not gentle slide of closures. Today, the paper magazine business is all but extinct. In fact, C! is one of the few committed survivors, defiantly producing ink on paper, with fewer issues, but still alive. C! proves that paper magazines are merely a delivery medium. What matters is content. C!, and all the other content makers, have fought to make the transition from the paper medium to the online medium. Five years ago, I was confident that they would “navigate this expertly.” Today, I’m not entirely convinced anyone has. If you want my fearless

assessment, you can digitally skip to the end, but I warn you, it might not make much sense unless you read the middle first. The last five years has been an era of difficult lessons — and many failed to learn them. These lessons seem obvious now, but they weren’t obvious to everyone in 2016. Here, then, is my opinionated syllabus:
1. Print and online are different mediums, and thus, different businesses. Blatantly obvious? Apparently not. Some still fail to see this, even if others have gone extinct as a result. A lot has to do with visual arrangement. Digital is small. Physically, the screens are small. Most Filipinos read their content from smartphones, comparatively few from desktops, laptops and tablets. Because of this, digital is better suited to short-form, or “nuggets” of information, with lots of pictures, and now, video. In order to be truly effective, not to say legible, digital content needs to be laid out and edited differently than print. The platforms of the transition era physically simulated the paper magazine on the digital screen, complete with simulations of turning pages. They use actual PDFs of the magazine layout, which make them tiny and unreadable on phones. You could, of course, magnify them, but reading more than a couple of paragraphs is a chore. C! still uses one such platform today, alongside its native digital content. Does anyone bother to read that? I wonder. Long-form, dense and detailed information is C!’s very raison d’etre. Squeezing this density into tiny screens, and still making room for advertising content, remains a challenge until today. Simulating paper on line is probably not the way to go. To me, it’s like putting a decorative smokestack on an electric train: it both misses the point and gets in the way. I think C! needs to take more advantage of the strengths of digital and play them. For example, when you have lots of images with an article, you don’t have to run them all really big. Like in social media, you can run most of them quite small, almost thumbnails. If a reader wants to see the image, they will click on it, and it blows up to full page, and zoomable. Video is now not only technologically feasible, it’s pretty much a requirement. Unfortunately, not all writers project well on
video. Too bad, it’s a cruel world. You ignore video at your peril. Even the New York Times now incorporates video into its pictorial reportage — why? Because it is in the very nature of the digital medium.
2. Paper is analog, online is digital, and on-demand. When the digital reader wants information, they want it now, not according to a monthly deadline. If they want to read an article, they want to be able to click on it and have the article appear instantly, not have to look it up in a table of contents and then leaf through physical or virtual pages to find it. For example, when a new car model is released, and readers google it, if your review is not in the results, you lose. You failed to get that reader, you failed to deliver that audience to your advertisers. By the same token, everything you wrote in the past is still relevant, and if it isn’t available to your readers, you lose again. It’s hard to emphasize this enough. If you’re going to be digital, you cannot do it on paper terms. Digital needs to be always available, always updated. It needs to be a live database, not a dead archive.
3. Circulation revenue is dead and buried. Digital is overwhelmingly free to read. If you make readers pay to read, as they used to do during the paper era, you instantly drop 95% of your potential audience, maybe more. A few newspapers have circled around to the pay barrier again, giving readers maybe two or three freebies a month. I am not sure this would work with magazines — and it for sure won’t work at the old cover prices that people used to pay for paper. Think about it this way. Ten years ago, magazines used to cost around P250, a bit more than a peso a page. For P149 today, you can buy a Netflix subscription for a month, and watch thousands of hours of movies and TV shows on your phone or tablet. Why would you pay P250 for something today that is worth just two or three hours, at most? Circulation revenue used to more or less cover printing and distribution costs, and then add a bit to cover editorial. Magazines were physical objects that had to be manufactured and then sent through channels on to shelves everywhere so that people could see them and buy them. With digital, you have no printing and distribution costs, so the evaporation of
THE ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
circulation revenue should have little effect, right? Wrong. As it turns out, advertising prices for digital are way lower than in print, thus revenue is lower, while at the same time the cost of editorial has gone up.
4. Digital mercilessly reveals how many people are really reading your content. Back in the paper days, we estimated circulation based on number of copies sold or given for free, multiplied by a mythical “passon-readership” factor. Very few research firms actually gathered data to validate publishers’ claims — which was probably a good thing, hahaha. Those days are long gone, because media buyers count clicks, nothing else. In fact, there is a new advertising model, which is basically, pay-per-click. This has had a quite negative effect on content. It has driven many platforms to downgrade their content to what we now call clickbait, that is to say nonsense that deceives the reader into clicking on it by appealing to baser instincts, emotion, or exaggerating its own relevance or meaningfulness. Basically, it’s tabloid journalism under a new name. Overall, the level of both integrity and competence has gone way down since the paper days, as online publishers struggle to survive, let alone thrive. To the credit of the folks at C!, this is one area where they never compromised, since the paper days. Indisputably, C! has maintained its commitment to truth, its integrity, and its passion, even in an era where the rule is commissioned content and advertorials. There are so many platforms now that don’t even bother to label advertorials as such any more. They just take the client’s content and run it as if they wrote it, the worst of praise release journalism. It’s not like these publishers have embraced this new modus vivendi wholeheartedly. They have simply been forced into it — because where there is no more circulation revenue, the advertiser has supreme power over the publisher.
5. Social media is the one ring to rule them all. It is no secret that more Filipinos
have Facebook accounts than those that have bank accounts — or even e-mail accounts. Social media has become the primary way the people experience any kind of media. In blunt terms, if your article doesn’t get shared or linked on social media, almost no one will
notice it. Social media has the audience’s attention, it’s the town plaza that everyone strolls around in every day. The chances of someone discovering your website outside of social media are very, very slim. Television is still king in terms of advertising revenue share, but the fact is that social media defines the internet, and is thus rapidly gaining in share. According to research I had access to, the advertising share of online media (of which social media is just one part) exceeded that of broadcast for the
“C! REMAINS COMMITTED TO ITS READERS, TO THE CONSUMER, TO ITS INTEGRITY, ITS QUALITY, AND TO THE TRUTH. C! STANDS FOR A LOT OF THINGS, BUT ‘COMPROMISE’ IS NOT ONE OF THEM.” first time in Philippine media history, some time in the first quarter of 2021. Of course, this was to some extent driven by two factors: the pandemic, and the closure of ABS-CBN, which had been the Philippines’ largest broadcasting corporation. But nevertheless, the rate of growth made this inevitable. C!, and all other online platforms, need to realize that all paths lead to social media. If they do not establish a committed and dynamic presence on social media, they run the risk of being eclipsed entirely. It’s already happening with stuff like Tik Tok.
although that is rapidly changing. I don’t think it’s a good idea to just abandon print entirely at this point, either. I think more of what they have to realize is how separate the two businesses should be, and really separate them. For another thing, C!, like everyone else, has made mistakes and missteps, and is still, in my opinion making some of them. As I said at the beginning, they can hardly be blamed for this, no one foresaw exactly how the media world would play out. What’s more important is that they have looked objectively on what has worked and what hasn’t, and are constantly innovating to meet the challenges. What, I believe, defines C! most of all, is simply this: they have never sold out. To this day, C! remains committed to its readers, to the consumer, to its integrity, its quality, and to the truth. C! stands for a lot of things, but ‘compromise’ is not one of them. This has been a turbulent era for media, and there has been no shortage of sellouts. For this team to have remained true to their mission, from day one to 20 years later, makes them heroes, in my book. The thing is, will this idealistic dedication to integrity kill them, in the end? Yes, the risk is real, but no, not on your life. These guys are warriors, and they are survivors. They’re taking casualties, and they’re shooting everywhere (including, sometimes, themselves in the foot), but they will make it through on sheer determination. So, I WILL see you in these pages (whether electronic or paper) five years from now… if they don’t fire me for writing this!
Assessment and forecast So has C! done an expert job of navigating the transition? I think it’s too early to tell. For one thing, the transition is still ongoing. C! retains one foot in print, and still hasn’t invested as much in its digital identity,

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD AN OIL CHANGE? The engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It keeps the many components of the engine working efficiently, and it helps reduce the accumulation of varnish and carbon from collecting on the engine. As oil collects heat, varnish and carbons during the course of protecting and keeping the engine running smoothly, it eventually becomes a sludge, no matter how good the oil is. That’s when you should have your oil changed.

t is well known to all that this ongoing pandemic with its numerous and neverending mutations has caused immense challenges and setbacks to many companies and industries out there. Due to this unforeseen reality, our way of life has been shaken and stirred, and admittedly has changed forever. While it has brought great pain for many, it too has created a great opportunity for others. After 20 years of existence for our publishing company, we too at C! Magazine find ourselves at a crossroads. We are fighting for our own survival while striving to keep ourselves relevant and true to the original purpose of this publication. In order to thrive in this new environment, we know that we too have to make adjustments and embrace a whole new platform as we move away from traditional print and into a whole new realm of digital media. We are
making changes within the organization and looking to invigorating our daily operations with new leadership and renewed direction. As the new Chairman of the C! Publishing group, I look forward to working with all the stakeholders and helping contribute to a sustainable future for this organization, while producing relevant content that excites and engages our numerous readers and loyal fans out there. This magazine was started by a group of car enthusiasts for car enthusiasts, and that spirit is very much alive at C! Magazine. We will continue to build on that guiding principle while embracing new mediums to get our reviews and content out. Thank you for the 20 years of unwavering support from the car industry, advertisers, and our subscribers. We will strive to continue to be the automotive authority in this marketplace, and we look forward to more exciting things to come in 2022 and beyond.

hen I was asked to write a message for our 20th anniversary issue, all I could think of was how we started this venture. Us partners would knock on the doors of potential advertisers and car manufacturers to present our plan and vision. Many thought we would not last more than three issues. The rest is history, and today we have two uniquely positioned magazines. C!, our flagship publication, is an authority in the automotive industry. Its annual Buyer’s Guide, which is already on its 13th edition, is recognized as the go-to reference by the community. Our team has gone beyond the Philippines for first-hand international editorial coverage including new releases, test drives, and exclusive launches. Our watch magazine, Calibre, is the country’s premier publication focused on the world of horology. Respected by the watch community, including collectors and international watch brands, Calibre has achieved global access and reach. Like many others, we have been faced with challenges that we continue to embrace and learn from. As we move forward to the next phase of our journey, we commit to deliver credible world class content to all our readers fueled by the same passion and dedication that has kept us going these last 20 years. We will embark on exciting new projects as we adapt to a constantly evolving digital world.

t’s easy to say that I learned a lot in my decade here in C! Magazine. I had the opportunity to drive and test all these cars. I was fortunate to have traveled around the country and across the world. 10 years later, I realized that what we truly care about here in C! Magazine is you. Whether it is by opening the magazine, or clicking the web link to an article, or opening a video: you are asking for our opinion about how a car, bike, or upgrade is. Because those who don’t care about something they want don’t look for opinions. But for someone making their next big investment, whether it is for themselves, for their business, or for their loved ones, our opinion matters. And it is with great pride that we make sure what we communicate is done so with integrity. Lately, I have been asked why we keep the name “C! Magazine” despite our venture to different mediums like the website, podcast, and videos. All I can say is: it is just like how car names have transformed to symbols of what they deliver. Miatas will always strive to be the answer to the affordable sports car. The Hilux symbolizes a hard-working pick-up that is equally hard to kill. As for C! Magazine, we will always be The Ultimate Automotive Authority that is for the people, simply because it was built by the people. For the years to come, you can expect our honest assessment of the cars, bikes, and aftermarket parts to come. You can also expect us to share our experiences when it comes to car ownership, saving you lessons learned the hard way. Most of all, expect to see us in many different media platforms to make sure that our information is received. If you are reading this, I want to thank you for giving me and my team the opportunity to do what we do to ensure that we communicate our knowledge and experience to help you, whether it is your next upgrade, your next bike, or your next car.
Congratulations C! Magazine on the 20 years of automotive dedication and creativity! Through the years, you have been a trusted voice in all facets of mobility and automotive lifestyle. It is evident that C! is fueled by the passion of car experts & enthusiasts who have helped mold the local automotive industry to what it is today. As Lexus’ partner since 2009, we think fondly of the work and things we have created since then. It is inspiring to see our two brands grow and espouse the same philosophies when it comes to quality and commitment to craftsmanship. We are thankful for all the recognition that C! has awarded us in the past on this regard. Thank you for trusting Lexus and the amazing experiences that our brand can offer that goes beyond cars! From all of us at Lexus, congratulations and we look forward to creating more amazing years together!

The Journey So Far
I
still remember it vividly. My first encounter with C! Magazine was during an event they set up back in 2005 — the C! Rally Experience. It’s here that I met Founding Editor Kevin Limjoco who, after hearing that I had a penchant for writing and a love for automobiles, recommended that I submit a sample article to then EditorIn-Chief Tito Hermoso. So submit I did, and I soon found myself in a job that I never set out to find in the first place. Little did I know that this happy little accident would eventually change my life. I remember my very first C! photo shoot. I was tasked to pick up a Volvo S90, take it home, and bring it to the shoot venue the next morning. It seemed so surreal at the time — I’d never driven a brand-new car before, much less Volvo’s luxury flagship at the time, and here I was driving it home as easily as ordering take out from a fast food restaurant. The next months (and years) that followed shaped the person I am today. I learned how to shoot cars from James Deakin. I learned writing tips from the talented editors around me. I learned how to push a car to its limits

(without dying), from Kookie Ramirez. I was inspired by the stories of Kenneth Quintal and Kevin Limjoco about places that I realized I wanted to visit myself one day, and perhaps most importantly, I nurtured relationships with people that ended up becoming some of my closest friends to this day. More than being just another job, C! Magazine enriched my life in ways I still haven’t completely discovered. I’ve driven to all the corners of the Philippines, witnessing the country’s beauty in ways I never would have done on my own. I’ve experienced expensive resorts I could never normally afford, and I’ve been to the most remote places around the world that I wouldn’t know how to get back to even if I tried. Naturally, it’s not always roses. There are deadlines to deal with, sleepless nights when struggling with writer’s block, tiring photo shoots, and yes, the occasional office drama. But no matter how difficult, challenging, or tiring working for C! can sometimes be, one thing I’ve been absolutely sure of is that it was always worth it. I entered C! when I was 25 — single, without any cares or obligations, and possessing a LOT more energy. More than 15 years later and with a family of my own, my priorities have since changed. I’d rather leave the traveling and galavanting to the younger editors and contributors nowadays. Even my taste in cars has changed. From seizing every opportunity I got to test drive all the sleekest sportscars, I now find myself drawn to crossovers and pickups. And while I may have changed, C! Magazine certainly hasn’t. Its core values, integrity, and commitment to the consumer has remained unwavering even through seemingly insurmountable challenges like the recent pandemic. And as I look back through C!’s 20 years in the industry, I find myself excited for the future. It’s going to be, as it always has been, one hell of a ride.

Use Your Turn Signals Let’s start with something simple, yet many are still guilty of neglecting. It doesn’t take a lot to use turn signals when changing lanes or making a turn. Using them is a responsibility we have as road users, so it’s definitely a misconception to think that they are useless. For everyone’s sake, try not to be lazy about it.
Catch Up On Maintenance If we want our vehicle to stay in tip-top shape for many years, try to plan out the maintenance as soon as it reaches your home for the first time. Maintenance is not something to even attempt to disregard. In fact, neglecting this responsibility will only cost you more money down the road in the ownership experience. Planning helps to break down the expenses, reducing the risk of untimely repairs.
A Resolution For Us Who Drive
E
very new year, millions of people come up with resolutions. A lot of times, the same ones are carried over from the previous year. From better fitness routines to fattening up bank accounts, it’s a recurring theme that seems to fall off just a month or two into the new calendar. Despite this, I’ve grown to learn to appreciate such a philosophy. Cliché as it may sound, at the very core of resolutions, is our yearning to be better — and this is why I admire people who make genuine efforts with their resolutions. It reminds me that there is always space to hope and dream regardless of the atrocities our world has experienced in recent years. The holiday break allowed me to reflect on such thoughts, and realize that resolutions can also be applied with the way we are on the road. To begin 2022, allow me to share with you a few resolutions we drivers and car owners could consider. Not only will these help make everyone on the road safer, but they could also contribute journeys with our vehicles for years to come.

Take Out the Junk Whether at home or at the office, a clean space is always beneficial for our wellbeing. The same goes with our cars. Aside from the fact that it helps keep the value of a vehicle, a clean and organized interior makes us feel more comfortable and cozier. With the traffic experienced nowadays, this is something all of us would definitely appreciate during commutes.
Follow Road Markers With the emergence of bicycle lanes during the pandemic, let’s all take some time to learn and understand them. It’s never too late to learn the differences between broken white lines, solid white lines, yellow lines, among others. At the end of the day, it’s important to keep in mind that our roads are shared. The more we take this seriously, the less unnecessary anxiety we’ll all experience on the road.
Respect Each Other
Paolo de Borja MANAGING EDITOR
All the previous points laid out point to one important thing — respect. Let’s learn to consider everyone who uses the road. Just like what the word suggests in a general sense, be present and thoughtful to those around us. I understand this is easier said than done, but I hope we don’t get tired of striving for the good.

“NOT TO GET ALL “EMO” AND ALL THAT, BUT ONE THING THAT SEEMS TO COME NATURALLY TO ME AND PERHAPS GENETICALLY AS MY FATHER, ELDER BROTHER KOOKIE DID IT TOO, WAS TO TEACH, PASSING ON THE KNOWLEDGE.”
Reeling in the Years
L
ooking back at the two decades of C! Magazine, it certainly brings on a whole gambit of emotions which has just added to the colors of my life. I was a young 40-year old race car driver helping my father revive circuit racing in Subic Bay. Exciting times, they were! Then a couple of young and enthusiastic friends came over and talked to me about putting out a premium car magazine and if I would join them. I instead recommended my big brother as he always loved to read. It was the right thing, Kookie always had the passion for it. It was fantastic! There had never been a car magazine of that caliber. To be honest, I thought it was a bit of a risky undertaking, and I suppose it was. But like most success stories, it was perseverance and determination that drove, and they surely had those.

Georges B. Ramirez SENIOR EDITOR
I would join in during comparos or when testing cars with Kookie, and the one thing I could say is it was so much fun! Every year, they would come up with some new thing: a track day, an annual award night, car race, sailing, you name it. Through the two decades, just like any child growing up I suppose, it went through a lot of spectacle and drama as well. It’s teleseries material-worthy for several seasons. Looking back with hindsight, it’s all good, each character completes the story and will always be a part of the story. My role in C! Magazine has also evolved through the years. From an occasional test driver to a more regular editor, yet the relationship has remained constant. Not to get all “emo” and all that, but one thing that seems to come naturally to me and perhaps genetically as my father, elder brother Kookie did it too, was to teach, passing on the knowledge. I suppose that’s why in many ways, C! Magazine is not only a family but a part of mine. Watching it go through all its trials and tribulations and still come out standing and in some sense “The last man standing” make me feel proud and warm to be a part of it. And what makes it strong are the people in it, every last one of the team, it is this that gives me certainty that it will continue to evolve in the years to come. Bravo!

THE EARLY YEARS At the time, a premium 100% Philippine owned car magazine had never been done before. When asked about C! Magazine by the uninitiated, they always assume that C! Magazine is an international franchise backed up by a huge corporation because of the glossy cover with the impeccable photo of the latest car laid out in intricate attention to design with words to make you feel as close to the steering wheel as possible. The truth is, C! Magazine has always been homebrewed by enthusiasts backed up by passionate individuals that help piece everything together. To start a fire needs a spark, but that spark is no good if the flame isn’t taken cared of. Whether it is luck, skill, or dedication, C! Magazine wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for these fine individuals that banded together to begin The Ultimate Automotive Authority.

EXTRA TIME
A
fter producing the special Extra Time feature on the “Burning” Issue on NonCombusted Alternatives to Cigarettes a few months ago, I realized that there were some details that I would want to further expound on as well as highlight a diverse sampling of new electrified solutions for mobility, recreation, exercise, and farming that are already available or will be available soon in our market. As I mentioned in the previous “electrification” article, there has been a sweeping accelerated revolution of electrified products and solutions being applied to almost every aspect of our lives, that are well beyond the conventional programmable battery-operated devices like toys with artificial intelligence, devices for self-pleasure, and vacuum cleaners. This electrified revolution is principally driven by our collective reactions from the destruction of our universal environment, resource management, and financial concerns. Let’s face it, if our environment was unscathed, with all our water sources and bodies together with the very air we all breath were all clean and wonderful, we wouldn’t have bothered engineering and immersing ourselves in the relentless pursuit for alternatives unless the efforts were for purely financial gains while the human race would have carried on with destructing our planet as if we had infinite resources and the earth magically healed itself on a daily basis without consequence. Inspired by enjoying an IQOS in the open air by the beach, I gathered this particular selection of electrified products that include previously tested mobility solutions, like the Renault Twizy, to the near future manned VTOL racing aircraft, the exciting new Airspeeder. The Renault Twizy 80 is a clever electric microcar that is an effortless two-person EV mobility alternative to a scooter. It has been stealthily sold, run, and supported independently throughout the archipelago through William Go’s Renault Twizy Philippines contact number (+63917) 854-7059, FB/IG/YT: @twizyph). Over 50 units have been sold already in just over a year with most deliveries being done outside of the Nation’s Capital Region. The sales outside of the metropolis makes more sense as you can enjoy the windowless little quadricycle more out in the countryside breathing the fresher air.

The Twizy is so compact that deliveries are being processed through a Toyota HiAce with the seats removed and using custom ramps which easily allows the van to swallow the whole unit. The model number represents the top speed achievable. The standard top speed is actually 85 km/h which is honestly sufficient for its intended commuter purposes with a maximum of 100-kilometer range on a single full charge depending on how you drive it. William sells the very attractive Renault Twizy for P680,000.00 in multiple colors which comes with a 3-year LTO registration included in the price. The 6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery
is located underneath the front seat. 0 to 60 km/h is achieved in 8.6 seconds which sounds really slow but feels sufficiently quick on urban roads. The Twizy looks a lot faster than it actually is by design thanks to the Formula-E looking wheels that are mounted outside of the fuselage-looking body while the perspex panels on the doors allow you to see the front wheels and the road. Visibility is similar to riding a fullscale scooter. The Twizy uses a regenerative brake system that helps extend battery usage. Overall performance is fairly brisk and peppy, accompanied by the now familiar whine of the electric motor.
THE ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
Many dutiful electrified devices and solutions have been around for a long time. The self-powered toothbrush, for example, has been around since 1954, the first electric boat was developed by the German inventor Moritz von Jacobi in 1839 in St Petersburg, Russia which carried 14 passengers at 4.8 km/h, demonstrated to Emperor Nicholas I of Russia on the Neva River, and commercially produced electric cars have been in use in Britain and North America since 1897 albeit as taxis. By 1893, the Elco company in the US began selling commercially available full production electric-powered boats. In the early 80’s, using an Elco-powered flat-bottom aluminum Jon boat was the only way to stealthily find the best fishing spots on the fresh and brackish waterways in Southern California where I would fish for Sunfish, Bass, and Trout with my grandfather. In modern times, Elco produces electric inboard and outboard engines that produce the equivalent of 5 hp to 250 hp. With increasing regulations to preserve the environment, with the additional bonus of clean and silent propulsion, such electrified boats are fast becoming the only medium legally possible to operate in North American continental waters. Studies have consistently reported that if only 5 % of the approximately 13 million registered boats in the U.S. today were powered with electric motors, 1 billion pounds of CO2 emissions would already be eliminated. A report by IDTechEx shows that the market for hybrid and pure electric boats and ships will rise rapidly to over $20 billion worldwide in 2027 for consumer’s vessels. So, North America is not alone in the movement to switch to alternative forms of clean fuel. More and more fresh and brackishwater lakes and reservoirs have become “Electric-Power” bodies of water. Crafts with gas-powered motors have been banned. Mandates such as these have caused more and more boaters to consider electric motors for their fishing boats, to continue enjoying their favorite outdoor sport at their preferred watering holes. We have to remember that more than half of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean, and keeping our bodies of water free from emissions, oil, and other pollutants are instrumental to ensuring the future of our water and air. Famously back in 2012, the Tûranor PlanetSolar, a 115-foot long, 86-foot wide catamaran yacht powered by 537 square meters of solar panels, completed a 60,023

kilometer circumnavigation of the Earth after 585 days without consuming any fossil fuel. Cleverly, the name Tûranor, derived from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings, translates to “The Power of the Sun.” About a year later and after a motor refit, the Tûranor PlanetSolar broke its own record, crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Las Palmas to Saint Martin in the Caribbean in only 22 days, four days faster than what was achieved on the same route the year before. To reduce hydro friction and increase both speed and range, some larger boats and new small watercrafts use hydrofoils. The Access Plus Group, known for being the distributors of Ducati, Indian, and BETA Motorcycles, as well as Polaris and Italjet in the Philippines is now selling the brilliant new LIFT 3 eFoil Explorer board for the SRP: P750,000.00. The LIFT 3 eFoil Explorer is 5’9” long and 31” wide that can support weight up to

300 pounds and managed by a hand-held waterproof controller. The boards are built with highly refined steel tools to forge the carbon fiber parts at extreme temperatures. With a 90-minute full charge, the fully electric propelled LIFT 3 eFoil allows the rider to joyously work out his or her core for two solid hours at up to close to 50 km/h of speed depending on water conditions and if you can stay on! The exciting all-new Airspeeder is designed with the concept of a global flying car racing series built by Alauda Aeronautics. The initial races are mostly limited by range. The race series has 10 pilots individually flying head to head in a circuit over the course of 30 minutes with two pit stops each. Each battery is supposed to allow around ten minutes of flying time. Pilots will switch speeders at regular pit stops. The Speeder uses a 500 kilowatt battery pack to power 8 high-powered electric motors. The lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber chassis with pilot weighs roughly 250 kg. The flight control system provides automatic extra safety measures to protect the pilots by creating buffers between vehicles as they race head to head. The Speeder has an even greater power to weight ratio than an F1 race car with a top speed of 200 km/h. The two confirmed race venues for 2022 are supposed to be California’s Mojave Desert and the desert near Coober Pedy in South Australia. The racing will be done fairly low to the ground through pylons and air gates, similar to the Red Bull Air Races. Alauda Aeronautics is building its vehicles at its test facility Adelaide, Australia. It is a very bold and supremely optimistic effort but I am thankful that the effort exists to encourage competitive development in this area of potential transport. Who knows, we all could be flying our own eVTOL machines in a decade’s time. The finance giant Morgan Stanley has supposedly suggested that flying cars could create a $1.5 trillion industry by 2040. Even if drones have been used for farming for several years now around the world, it was only back in August 2018 at the PhilRice Central Experiment Station in barangay Malayantoc, Santo Domingo, in the province of Nueva Ecija during a Volkswagen Philippines media event, did we get to physically witness the brilliant optimization solutions applied to farming. To manage farms more efficiency and economically utilizing a combination of RBG cameras,

thermal imaging, and multi-spectral imaging, drones can be purpose-fitted for aerial survey and mapping, security & surveillance, real-time plant health assessment, pest and fertilization control, livestock management, soil analysis, and so much more to increase productivity and crop yield in the agriculture industry. In some estimates, global food production will need to increase by between 60-100% over the next decade and we certainly do not want to double the world’s food production by clearing approximately one billion hectares of rainforest land, so precision agriculture is critical. Popular industrial designer Christopher Paris Lacson has been tirelessly working on organically Philippine-inspired and sourced mobility solutions under his Meep and Banatti brands. With Meep, he is working on an elegant and practical public transportation replacement to the iconic Jeepney and with Banatti he has been able to produce a functioning all-electric motorcycle called the Falcon. The Falcon can be geared for city or highway use with top speeds ranging from 65 to 110 km/h, using a 3.3 kW 70Nm motor and 48V lithium-ion battery that fully charges from a household wall socket in 3 to 4 hours
for an estimated range of 60 road kilometers. He is also working on a Banatti all-electric watercraft Banca alternative too. Another great source of affordable high quality electrified mobility is through DRIFT MOTOR, located at the Valley Fair Town Center, Ortigas Avenue extension, Taytay, Rizal. (GM Bugayong: (+63917) 464-6222). Drift Motor has a comprehensive product list of very desirable fully electrified scooters and bicycles in multiple colors. The YPRO looks like a traditional modern two-person scooter that retails for P75,000.00, with full LED lighting, 2000w motor, 55-kilometer range, 6-10 hour charging time, and a top speed of 65 km/h. The awesome Raptor 2.0 electric fat mountain bike sells for P85,000.00, has a 50 km/h top speed, 60 kilometer range, uses a 500w motor to assist with the Shimano gearsets or power it all the way, has full LED lighting and takes between 4 to 8 hours to fully charge. For even more versatile mobility, Drift Motor also sells the e-Scooter Streetray which has 4-speed modes with a 35 km/h top speed, up to 75 kilometer range, weighs 22 kg., full LED lighting, 500w motor, and takes between 4 to 6 hours to fully charge for P39,000.00. There are many all-new fully electrified EV
cars coming to our market to compete with the likes of Jaguar, Nissan, BYD, and Chery. One brand in particular that I reckon should also find its way to our market is Weltmeister aka WM Motor. Weltmeister (which means World Champion in German) became the first Chinese EV startup to operate its own manufacturing facility back in 2016. With the promise of selling more affordable fullfeatured crossover solutions that are said to have acceleration from 0-100 km/h in less than 9 seconds with up to 520 kilometers (325 miles) of range on a single charge. I hope the brand does find its way to our market. Segway Philippines has been around for years now selling the famous two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transporter. But now they too are offering a plethora of electrified mobility solutions from mountain bikes to gokarts and so much in between to make your head spin. The Ninebot Gokart PRO model has a range of up to 25 kilometers with a top speed of 37 km/h and sells for P97,999.75. The Segway Dirt eBike X160 has a range of about 65 kilometers and has a top speed of 50 km/h and retails for P310,000.00. IQOS IQOS was recognized by the US FDA as fundamentally different from cigarettes because there is no combustion. IQOS heats real tobacco and doesn’t burn it. It was authorized by the US FDA to be marketed in the US as it was deemed “appropriate to promote the public health” and is “expected to benefit the health of the population as a whole.”

“Quite different from electronic cigarettes, HTPs produce aerosols, still containing nicotine, using a battery powered heating system device. Based on studies, the amount of toxic substances a smoker gets is up to 95 percent less, compared to traditional tobacco smoking. Though HTPs may be considered a pragmatic middle ground for recalcitrant smokers, there is still some degree of addiction; hence, legislative and regulatory control measures are imperative, so as to prevent the youth and nonsmokers to be “seduced” into trying them. However, these regulatory measures should not be more stringent than what are currently Nicotine Nicotine occurs naturally in tobacco. While addictive and imposed on tobacco smoking since it would not totally risk-free, nicotine is not the primary cause of smoking-related diseases. NCAs deliver nicotine, as this defeat the purpose of getting current smokers is one of the characteristics adult smokers look for in alternative products. Providing NCAs that are acceptable out of this deadly vice.” — Dr. Raffy Castillo, Dr. Jade Reano, Dr. Marie Regala, and Dr. Reggie Arimando December 2021 issue of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine
With our exploration with non-combustible alternatives to cigarette smoking in particular, there are some key points which we wanted to reemphasize because of its importance to both non-smokers and smokers alike. The smoke from a burning cigarette contains over 6,000 chemicals, about 100 of which have been identified by public health experts as harmful or potentially harmful. With the advancement in science and technology, noncombustible alternatives (NCAs) such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTPs) like Philip Morris International’s IQOS, and snus have been developed for those adults who would otherwise continue to smoke. When scientifically substantiated and manufactured under appropriate quality and safety controls, they can be a better choice than continued smoking. The primary cause of smoking-related diseases is the harmful and potentially harmful compounds found in cigarette smoke. Most harmful compounds found in cigarette smoke associated with smoking-related diseases are produced when tobacco is burned. The high temperatures created by the process of burning tobacco cause the production of the majority and high levels of harmful chemicals detected in cigarette smoke. Noncombustible alternatives to cigarettes like IQOS, do not burn or combust tobacco and do generate smoke. NCAs produce an aerosol instead, which is fundamentally different to cigarette smoke because there is no combustion.
to adult smokers and satisfy their needs increases the likelihood that they will be able to switch completely and abandon cigarettes for good. Certain people, however, should not use products that contain nicotine, such as minors and pregnant women.
Smoke-free products
Adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke may choose to switch to less harmful alternatives. These products deliver nicotine sans combustion and provide a satisfying taste, ritual, and sensorial experience. There are various types of products within the NCA product category, including HTPs, e-cigarettes, snus, and oral nicotine pouches. Each type uses different methods to deliver nicotine without combustion. HTPs generate a nicotinecontaining aerosol by heating tobacco filled sticks to temperatures sufficient to release nicotine and flavors from the tobacco without reaching the burning point. E-cigarettes or vapes heat a liquid solution containing nicotine and flavors to produce an aerosol, which some call a vapor.
The scientific concept behind NCAs
As the burning of tobacco produces the vast majority of harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, eliminating the burning process, as is the case with NCAs, means that the levels of harmful chemicals generated can be significantly reduced compared with cigarette smoke. For NCAs to be successful in reducing population harm, it must be scientifically proven to be significantly less harmful than cigarettes and it should be satisfying for current adult smokers. Taste and rituals should be similar to smoking, sans the burning.
