Electric Momentum
I
f this year has proven anything to me, it’s that the Philippine auto industry is at a major turning point to electrification and sustainability, evidenced by the launch of several electric vehicles and hybrids from various brands. EVs offer significant benefits for the environment and its consumers, but one benefit that isn’t often discussed is their contribution to the economy and society as they create new opportunities for employment, innovation, and investment in the local auto industry. The EV industry can generate direct and indirect jobs and spur local supply chain development, infrastructure, and services. EVs and hybrids can also enhance the accessibility and affordability of mobility for consumers, especially for public utility vehicles such as jeepneys, buses, and tricycles, which are the main modes of transportation for millions of Filipinos. However, EVs and hybrids still face significant challenges before seeing widespread adoption. Some of these challenges include the high upfront cost of the vehicles, the lack of charging stations and incentives, the low awareness and acceptance of the consumers, and the technical and regulatory issues that affect the quality and safety of the vehicles. These challenges require government and industry collaboration and coordination to address them and create a conducive and supportive environment for the EV sector. The Philippine auto industry is not alone in its pursuit of electrification and sustainability, as other Southeast Asian countries are also making efforts to promote and develop the EV market. However, the Philippines has

made significant progress with its EV policy framework, with clear plans for installing more charging stations nationwide while providing various incentives to those making the EV switch. With the launch of several EVs and hybrids from Hyundai, Kia, MG, BMW, and several Chinese manufacturers just this year alone, the Philippine market is showing some real potential to become a regional leader in the green mobility sector. And that’s something I’d love to see.

here’s absolutely, positively nothing adorable about electricity. It’s invisible, unpredictable, and can kill you in a blink of an eye. During the last Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit, as well as my recent visit to the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, I noticed that a large amount of EVs and HEVs in the market today have this sort of cutesy design to them. They come in colors like baby pink, seafoam green, and powder blue. There’s even a model out there that lets you customize the car six ways from Sunday. While that’s all well and good–and I won’t judge you for wanting to drive a car that looks like one of those Little Tykes cars from the 90s–on the other end of the spectrum are those electric vehicles that look like they were designed by engineers who have an unusual obsession with Tron or the Robocop franchise. Light bars that wrap around the entire facade of the vehicle, rims that look like they were stolen from an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue, and just about the drabbest colors imaginable. It’s almost as if there are only two options when it comes to designing a battery-powered vehicle: Saccharine sweet or cyberpunk. What I’m getting at is when it comes to designing EVs, I do not understand this incessant need to make it look anything like what it actually is: A car. I’d be lying if I told you that the weird designs of these vehicles have made a dent in

their adoption–it really hasn’t — and I’m very happy about that. The fact of the matter is that the electrification of the automotive industry is still full steam ahead. But you know what could probably make this transition a lot faster? Designing them to look like normal vehicles. The automotive world has already seen this work not too long ago with the Toyota Prius to great results, and I applaud Toyota for continuing to integrate the EV technology into existing vehicles instead of creating gimmicky vehicles with dot matrix LED brake lights. Now, I have to say that from a marketer’s perspective, I get the need for manufacturers to create designs that match the novelty of their electric creations, but in the long-run, if we’re to seriously consider making them ubiquitous, we must get past the idea that these cars are just curiosities. The uniqueness of the designs can wear out quite quickly, and in several year’s time end up dating the car severely. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and Google the GM EV1. I firmly believe that in a little over a decade from now, the ICE vehicles will look more like a rarity compared to EVs and HEVs–we’re in for an electric future, that’s for sure. If what I saw in China several weeks ago is anything to go by where one in four cars is electric, it’s no longer an “if” but rather a “when” we all get electric cars. The only thing I worry about is if our roads will look more like a scene from the Barbie movie or Blade Runner.

pparently, quite a bit. We recently released our Ultimate Buyers Guide once again, and things have certainly changed from the effects of the global pandemic and humanity’s effort to save our planet. You could say car and motorcycle companies are bouncing back with a vengeance. As they race to recapture the industry’s market shares, they offer more models and variants with a lot of techs. In addition to this, the proliferation of new Chinese cars and motorcycles in the local market is growing. Many of our main car importers have adopted a brand or two, and I must say, many of them look and feel good. Combined, this leaves the Philippine consumer a smorgasbord of mobility choices. Normally, I would be wary about too much tech, especially those that are unsafe or counter the basics of ergonomics, driving position, and locating gauges and switches in a way that allows one to use them while keeping their hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road. Good or bad, this tech is here and here to stay. Mind you, a lot of it is good, convenient, and, more importantly, safe. As a professional, I teach people how to use this tech, how it can be a very good tool, and how it all works. What I will tell you is, keep in mind if something requires you to look at a screen or a

switch for more than three or more seconds, it would be best to pull over if you are alone and then tend to it. If you have a companion, ask them to navigate it for you. If the head unit gets hung or you get lost in the numerous multi-function buttons or switches, it is just like your cellphone. Again, pull over, shut off the car, and restart (reboot), and that normally does the trick. Occasionally, you may encounter a glitch that seems to persist, and then perhaps a few hours later, it’s gone, and there is no trace of a problem. I refer to it as “the electronic gremlin within.” It is what it is!

Then there are those issues that do have something that’s broken, and before incurring bigger expenses and changing major parts, consider getting it diagnosed, as it usually can be attributed to one of the many sensors vehicles have today. Yup, usually, a cheap and small sensor may be the culprit. The good news is there are a large amount of electric and hybrid cars and motorcycles. In fact, the availability of these sort of vehicles have reached us sooner than I expected, and I couldn’t be happier about that. They are fabulous vehicles, and the rate of improvement in these vehicles is remarkable. I must also say that the government’s efforts have helped, so I foresee more to come as the electric mobility revolution continues to grow. There are a variety of models being offered, some for urban use, which would cost less and can still do hour-long trips, and other more costly ones with a massive range of around 400 to 600+ km. The amount of public-type charging points is already adequate for the current volume of Electric Vehicle (EV) users, and this will only increase as the demand increases. If anyone has any hesitations regarding EVs, there is also a large selection of hybrid and e-power vehicles being offered. This would allow you to get your feet wet, so to speak, without range anxiety or a change in your daily routine as you would still be visiting the same petrol station but just less frequently. So, enjoy yourselves!

BMW X3 xDrive20d Business The Beauty of Balance Words and photos: Wowie Go
THERE WAS A TIME not too long ago when you only had two options if you wanted to own a BMW SUV. There was the X5, which was large, tall, and imposing, and then there was its smaller brother, the X3, with a more pouty kidney grille and somewhat awkward proportions. To be completely honest, I was more of an X5 kind of guy, and when I look back at it now I kind of don’t blame myself. The truth of the matter is that the BMW X3 has certainly come a long way since its E83 days, and while there may be a plethora of BMW SUVs to choose from now, this one is definitely the one to get. The G01 BMW X3 has been around for quite some time now, 2017 to be exact, but compared to its other BMW siblings, it actually looks great considering its age. Its overall styling and silhouette, which you can now obviously tell has already bled through two separate generations of BMW design, has a timelessness to it and actually blends well with the rest of the lineup. The grille of

Under the hood, the car comes with a TwinPower Turbo 2-liter inline 4-cylinder Diesel that’s absolutely whisper quiet that you could mistake it for a gas engine. What else is silent is the starter motor of the X3, which only gently whirs to life when coming from a standstill. It comes with a buttery-smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, feeding all four wheels 190 BHP and 295 lb-ft of torque. If I could describe the performance of the X3 in one word, it would be finesse. Thanks to its torque-y power plant, I discovered that the vehicle just glides through the highway like a shark. In the safety department, the car comes equipped with the standard BMW fixings. can see just how much the car has Subaru written all over it. From the outside, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that the BRZ looks nothing like its stablemates at the showroom. It may just be the only thing that doesn’t have Subaru’s fingerprints on it, to be honest. Much like its predecessor, the second-generation BRZ

just hugs you in place. The feel of the leatherwrapped steering wheel grips well, and all the buttons are within reach–except for maybe the cruise control, which has its own stalk at the 4 o’clock position. Then again, who uses cruise control on a BRZ? Out on the road though is where the vehicle really shows its Subaru DNA. The low-mounted 2.4-liter boxer-4 engine with 234 horses at your disposal comes alive even when it’s not at full send. And because it is slung low, the vehicle is incredibly sure-footed. There’s something about the way the BRZ’s suspension is tuned that feels incredibly reassuring at higher speeds–it’s kind of scary how much rope it gives you. And the wonder of it all is that if you do want to feel the car for what it truly is, you absolutely can with just a press of some buttons by the center console. Yours truly actually had half a mind to give that a whirl and the only way I could probably describe it is like I’ve been melded with the car itself. In not so many words: It’s visceral. Ironic, since driving the car around every day actually made me realize one crucial detail about the BRZ that really underscored its indispensable Subaru-ness. How can such a frivolous-looking vehicle be so incredibly practical? Really, it may not look like it on the outset but you can absolutely live with the BRZ. It doesn’t have a gigantic footprint so it doesn’t eat up much of a garage, it has decent enough space in the trunk, it doesn’t need any specialty parts like extra wide tires, and while it’s not the most economical vehicle it

DRIVES The key component at the core of this exemplary extended range standard wheelbase Range Rover SE P440e variant, in Belgravia Green exterior with combination Ebony Windsor leather and Ultrafabrics textile, is the 38.2kWh lithium-ion battery with 141 hp electric motor powering all four wheels, that sits low and hidden in between the front and rear seats that offers cleaner emissions, as well as more electrified driving and operating power. When fully charged, the P440e can travel genuinely up to 77 kilometers on pureelectric motivation at up to 140 km/h of pace before the direct injection intercooled turbo inline-6 engine takes over. To help showcase the enhanced agility of the P440e, our test unit also had fully adaptive suspension combined with rear-wheel steering (turning circle of up to 7.3 degrees) so the substantial SUV handled like a mid-size crossover and was extra effortless to park in congested parking lots. Equipped with the standard Terrain Response 2 Auto system, the P440e is provided with enhanced capability across every terrain and seamlessly adapts automatically to driving conditions and road surfaces. The rolling stock are 21-inchers that function splendidly, however its standard design is nowhere near as attractive as the vehicle is inside and out. The intelligent allwheel-drive system splits torque up to 50/50 front to rear, along with a 2-speed transfer case for high and low ranges.

The new flagship models will now be using BMW-sourced twin-turbo V8s so those topspec models will be even more expensive, and have completely different behaviors altogether. But I honestly think that those behemoths maybe too impudent as the P440e was already optimal and effortless. The P440e will eventually be replaced with a more potent version of the same drivetrain called the P550e, which promises to be swifter while retaining the current practical range and characteristics. The only vehicle that exceeds the opulence and comfort of any member the Range Rover family is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, but you will also have to pay very handsomely for the privilege. The Range Rover SE P440e is an incredibly classy, quiet, dynamic, and comfortable way to travel in any occasion. Using the 7-kW home charger took 5 hours to charge the depleted battery to full, but you can also increase the hybrid usage and “organically” charge the battery while you drive normally or by activating the more aggressive onboard charging techniques as you use the vehicle. The overall driving dynamics and its real-world fuel economy is also very impressive.

Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.5 EyeSight The Better XV Words: Kevin C. Limjoco Photos: Isabel N. Delos Reyes
With the pronounced interior trim and packaging upgrades, which include substantial NVH improvements, the extra pair of speakers combined with the more full-range amplifier of the new system is significantly better than the system used in its predecessor using 8 speakers, and even better sounding than the current system applied to the current domestic Subaru WRX tS EyeSight. Extracting the most from the more potent naturally aspirated flat-4 is a recalibrated CVT that reacts much better than before and allows the Crosstrek Limited to perform closer to core characteristics loved by Subaristi. mechanical upgrades that are felt more than seen, are the much better and larger brakes (12.4-inch vented front brake discs are up from 11.6-inchers while the rear discs increased from solid 10.8 inches to vented 11.2 inches) and the new electronically assisted power steering sourced from the WRX. In markets that offer it, Subaru also has a more off-road oriented variant called the Crosstrek Wilderness with unique design nuances, a raised suspension by 15 mm (so ground clearance is 9.3 inches instead of the standard 8.7 inches), a more robust roof rack rated to handle more outdoor equipment, a lower final drive ratio of 4.11 compared to the standard 3.7, and additional cooling for the model-specific revised CVT transmission that can manage better low-speed light offroad trailing. In many ways, I think the new Subaru Crosstrek is the best looking and most desirable model in the Subaru family. It is no longer small nor does it have an identity crisis. It is a practical and very purposeful crossover that is useful and entertaining to drive beyond the North American four seasons. The Crosstrek may not be the STi rally car that and thorough. Subaru also claims that with the new engine mounts, revised components and cradles, the measures have reduced NVH entering the cabin by approximately 20 %, and we can certainly attest to this as our test unit felt lithe and more athletic while also being tangibly more refined with a much quieter interior. The new Crosstrek model now stands with more pride and distinction rather than being regarded as the modest entry level crossover that it was in most other markets. The amazing thing is that all the improvements to the top-spec Seltos SX only added less than 30 pounds of weight, so it drives with the spunk of a hot hatch but in a relaxed demeanor. Packaged the way our test unit was kitted in the US; I would love to have it as-is for our market which would also justify its fairly steep price in the Philippines with significantly less standard equipment and vastly less power. I like that despite the brilliant new dual screens, the basic functions like climate control and infotainment have physical controls for easy and instant access. The cleverly refreshed Kia Seltos is a goodlooking, versatile, and very well-built everyday crossover that is now even more appealing. 2023 GWM Haval H6 Supreme
It didn’t take long after the Chinese automaker’s relaunch in the Philippines to introduce an impressive portfolio that’s clearly geared at challenging the established players in the market. But like any brand, the flagship model is what makes or breaks first impressions. It’s the offering in the stable that shows a brand’s intentions — the one that makes the statement. For GWM, that model is the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid. Once China’s best-selling crossover for several years, the Haval H6’s pedigree is impressive, offering a great balance of refinement and tech, with the added benefits of a hybrid powerplant.
DESIGN
The GWM Haval H6 features classic SUV styling that blends a muscular stance with some sporty touches. Hats off to GWM for equipping the Haval H6 Supreme with LED headlights, tail lights, and foglamps, which adds to its great value. Large blacked-out 19-inch alloy wheels on 225/55 R19 Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 tires are also a nice touch, making it stand out from the crossover pack. Inside, the Haval H6 continues its great first impression. The two-tone tan and black leather seats contribute to the cabin's sophisticated feel, making it seem like it’s punching way above its PhP 1,883,000 price tag. Both driver and passenger seats are electronically adjustable, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. It’s clear that the predominant theme of the cabin is a minimalist approach, with very few buttons, knobs, or dials cluttering any surfaces. Most of the H6’s functionality - from entertainment to climate control,

and even selecting drive modes — are found in the centrally-mounted 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. This does have its pros and cons; while it would’ve been nice to have some controls more accessible, it only takes a few hours to familiarize yourself with navigating through the various menus to figure out where everything is. Behind the steering wheel is a mounted 10.25-inch digital display that honestly looks like it could feel right at home in a more expensive car. Here you’ll find information such as hybrid state, engine speeds, tire pressure monitoring, and of course, your speed. Both screens are incredibly sharp and legible with no discernible lag. And while we’re mentioning screens, it’s worth mentioning that the 360-degree camera is one of the clearest and sharpest we’ve seen in any car in its class, even putting some luxury brands to shame. Adding to the minimalist motif is the H6’s rotary dial which acts as a gear shifter. Rotating left to right shifts
the car from reverse, to neutral, to drive, and pushing it down places the car on park. It might take a few minutes to get used to, but this setup allows for a more efficient use of space, allowing for an extra storage compartment beneath the center console. The rear legroom is incredibly generous, easily capable of seating 3 adults comfortably. Cargo capacity at the back is listed at 600 liters, which is impressive considering that space is needed for the battery. With the rear seats folded down, luggage capacity increases to a cavernous 1,485 liters.
DRIVING PERFORMANCE
The H6 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 148 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to a 1.76 kWh battery supporting an electric motor that adds 92 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a combined output of 240 hp and 391 lb-ft

of torque. The power is delivered to front wheels via a 2-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which propels the H6 from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. The powertrain combination is surprisingly snappy, with instant acceleration available when you need it, whether you’re cruising at lower speeds or overtaking on the highway. The hybrid transmission makes power delivery extremely linear and seamless. It’s also interesting to note that, at least in normal driving mode, the H6 prioritizes using electric propulsion whenever it can. Apply some aggressive throttle and both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor work together for some impressive torque off the line, resulting in chirping tires and torque steer. We managed to record 9-12 km/l overall in terms of fuel economy. And while those are highly impressive hybrid figures compared to the competition, they’re still impressive crossover/SUV figures no matter how you look at it. The H6 suspension setup provides a soft and pliant ride, though there is still room for refinement in controlling how the car rebounds from sharp bumps. NVH levels are fantastic for its class, with the H6 rewarding its occupants with a quiet ride that filters outside noise quite effectively.

VALUE FOR MONEY
The GWM Haval H6 is backed by a five-year or 150,000 km warranty, whichever comes first. And let’s not forget the various incentives it can receive as a hybrid vehicle, which includes discounts on the motor vehicle user’s charge and exemptions from the coding scheme. At PhP 1,883,000, the Haval H6 is an impressively fleshed out package, offering more power, more safety and convenience features, and great fuel economy compared to similarly priced vehicles in its class. The next step from here would be a plug-in variant, and we can’t wait to see that happen.

another day.
What accomplishments have you been most proud of in the last 5 years? VL: I always wished and prayed that I'd put up 10 dealerships in 10 years, God, in His usual self, gave more! To date our group owns and operates 16 dealerships to date. The JETOUR distributorship opportunity was also God-given. I applied as early as 2010 for Nissan, I got a nod in 2015, and to date, our group corners more than 10% of Nissan Philippines' market. Remember when I said I worked as a salesman and retired as EVP? Our group now owns & operates Nissan North EDSA. Talk about life's full circle! Acknowledging the Chinese brands - I was one of the first Foton dealers (apart from their company-owned one). We were the very first MG and Chery dealers here in the Philippines. The Chinese brands account for at least 25,000 units sold in 2022. However, when people ask me how many years I have been in this business, my answer is 30, not 12 years. With sweat, tears, and a lot of sacrifices. It’s been a long 30 years! How have you managed to adapt to the changing automotive landscape over the years? What were the biggest challenges? VL: The only constant is change. If you can’t adapt in business, you will fall. The major shift I saw was the source of sales from showrooms to malls and malls to online. The biggest challenge would be brands wanting more showrooms to cover more areas to accomplish more sales. This means fewer sales per outlet but more showrooms, leading to more capital expenditure. Fear. I managed fear. A lot of times, I wanted to give up. I just prayed and remembered God's promises and assurances. Where do you see the local automotive industry evolving over the next few years? VL: My (fearless) forecast, in the simplest way: For the next 5 years, 1st-3rd place will still be the Toyotas, the Mitsubishis, and the Nissans. But 4th-10th place will all be Chinese. With an exception maybe to Ford, who has done a good job penetrating and winning the hearts of the Filipinos. What does the future hold for you? What plans are you most excited about? VL: For one, to put a halt on expansion plans, at least on the retail side. There's a time for planting; I think it's time to harvest. 2nd is to focus on training the second generation. I can't say I'm already successful, but at least I paved the way. 3rd, maybe look for more brands alongside JETOUR —

The Breakthrough EV Sedan That Missed the Cut Words:
Kevin C. Limjoco Photos:
Isabel N. Delos Reyes
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 GLS he slick multi-award winning all-new fully electrified Hyundai Ioniq 6 mid-size fastback sedan is absolutely brilliant. It was unfortunately tested after the 19th C! Award assessment cut-off so it missed the cut, which it should have handily won for the very best full-EV vehicle in the Philippine market. Our test unit here in Abyss Black Pearl exterior paint and recycled black leather interior is the lone GLS model currently offered in our market that shares a lot of equipment and the drivetrain with the longrange Ioniq 5 hatch and Kia EV6 GT-Line from the rear-wheel drive, brakes, suspension, screens, electric motors, and electronics to the battery. They all use the shared new Hyundai E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles for Kia, Genesis, and Hyundai. Ironically, the physically smaller Ioniq 5 hatch actually has a longer wheelbase by 50 mm compared to both the Kia EV6 and the much larger Ioniq 6. The industry news is that the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis group is producing a confirmed 23 battery electric vehicles using the new platform within the next few years. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 does have multiple available variants and trims that include AWD, more power, and more range already available in other markets with more models to come, however our local GLS longrange model is genuinely very well packaged and has more than enough thrust for our driving environment. More range would be great, but for now, it has the appropriate balance of performance and standard

equipment, especially for its price. However, for its price and packaging, it is considerably a more attractive and more practical premium mid-size sedan alternative to an Audi E-Tron GT, a BMW 520i Luxury, Lexus ES300h, and Mercedes-Benz E200 Avantgarde. The Ioniq 6 GLS does have the standard performance tuning technology, electric vehicle virtual driving sound, and electric vehicle active sound, but I prefer to silence all the synthetic sounds and enjoy the fabulous 8-speaker Bose sound system unencumbered while the substantial sedan travels stealthily. Though admittedly the exterior sound generation should be enabled in high traffic areas and in the city so pedestrians and cyclists are made aware of your existence. In the event of an unfortunate accident, it is great to know that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 has achieved the highest overall rating in the Euro NCAP, including adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection, and safety assistance systems. Much like other Hyundai models that now feature the new, literally pixelized design language called "Parametric Pixel" found in the Ioniq 5 and the top-spec Staria Premium+, the Ioniq 6 heavily applies light show to the tune of over 700-pixel LED lights applied to almost every area including the rear spoiler. It also uses the new aluminum stylized-H emblem and the functional new 4-dot reference on the steering wheel to the Morse code for “H” that also serves as indicators for state-of-charge while the fastback sedan is plugged in. Speaking of being plugged-in, when the test unit was delivered, it had only 62% of charge with an indicated range of 351 kilometers. Without a dedicated fast charger and wallcharger at our home, we simply used the supplied auxiliary home wall socket-charger (home cable trickle charger) which charged at a painful 1.3 kW. If you see the picture of the charging time supporting this story, you will clearly see that at this rate, it would have taken almost 50 hours to charge to 100 % at this low level 1 standard. Yet it is important to note that even with 39% of charge in the battery at the time we plugged it in, the available travel range was still an effective 215 kilometers. At 59% charge approximately 16 hours later, we had a range of 331 kilometers. Interestingly, the first two times we tried to charge the Ioniq

6 to 100%, the charger stopped functioning at 62%. On the third charge, the rate of charge increased, and we got 82% with an indicated range of 467 kilometers. So, it is clear that when you do buy these EV vehicles, you should definitely install the faster, more secure wall chargers for swifter and more efficient charging. The very tastefully designed Ioniq 6 would definitely be more attractive in any other color than black as it hides the considerable visual and functional aerodynamic efforts. At

a drag coefficient of .22 cd, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the most aerodynamic car ever sold in the Philippines which definitely helps with range and dynamic performance, as well as cabin comfort. The Ioniq 6 also has a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging outlets located inside and outside the vehicle so you can also use it as a generator when parked, and has the ability to charge higher capacity devices on the move. Thankfully, a secure smartphone wireless charger is also standard. There are multiple USB ports, customizable ambient interior lighting, and clever interior packaging to maximize space that creates a very welcome and spacious cabin environment. The dual crisp 12.3-inch displays are great but I still wish that the driver instrumentation would allow more visual adjustability aside from the slight color and graphic changes depending on the default selection of drive modes or reconfiguring the themes. A set of analog speedometer and tachometer would be awesome, especially since the electric motors rev to as high as 20,000 rpm! Every detail on the fabulous Hyundai Ioniq 6 is noteworthy and thoroughly comprehensive. Much of the interior materials applied in the modern and tasteful interior are repurposed/recycled. Other highlights include the intelligent full-LED lighting, the + and – aluminum pedals, the unique stalked drive control (also known as Column type shift-bywire), comprehensive active and passive safety suites, and smart cruise control. The Ioniq 6 is an accomplished handler with relentless linear power that will entertain the most jaded enthusiast and deliver exemplary comfort to its passengers. It can utilize 400V fast charging and 800V ultra-rapid charging as well. It is definitely a very compelling and very desirable mobility solution that ticks most required boxes. Its only compromise is essentially its acquisition cost despite the eventual savings to charge it and one’s sensitivity toward our environment. The trunk is good but not great, we were able to fit two full-size golf bags with some available space, but it is not commensurate to the vehicle’s proportions. It soaks up road imperfections better than many conventional cars while dynamically staying ahead of the rest effortlessly, cleanly, and quietly.

Under the hood is a hybrid rotary engine running on carbon-neutral fuel, and more interestingly, alternative fuels such as hydrogen as well. The concept is significantly larger and heavier than the current MX-5, so we’re guessing we’re getting closer to the eventual RX sportscar that’s been going around the rumor mill for a while now. Either way, we wish it would get here faster.
Lexus LF-ZL Looking significantly more futuristic than it’s brother, the LF-ZC, the Lexus LF-ZL concept is larger, grander, and definitely a few more years away from becoming reality. Controlling its functions is the Arene OS, an augmentedreality system which overlays information about passing points of interest when an occupant points at them. From its bamboo-detailed cabin to the removal of a B-pillar to keep the cabin completely open during ingress and egress, the LF-ZC gave us a taste of what to expect from a possible future luxury EV SUV from Lexus.
Lexus LF-ZC Lexus proved that they’re going all-in with EVs when they revealed the Lexus LF-ZC. Lexus promises that a production version of this concept will hit the streets in 2026, showcasing a fusion of physical and digital technologies. A virtual-reality drive of the LF-ZC featured advanced head-up displays projecting vital gauge information and augmented-reality data on a large portion of the windshield. With a claimed 1,000 kilometer range and an interior executed using sustainable materials, Lexus is putting the environment to the forefront.

Mitsubishi D:X Yes we got to see the much-anticipated Triton that will hit our shores any time now, but the D:X concept gives us a look further down the Mitsubishi timeline. The D:X combines characteristics useful for offroading such as a raised suspension, short front and rear overhangs, and all-wheel drive, with more classic minivan or MPV traits like sliding doors and seating for six using a 2+2+2 layout. Each of the panoramic seats can rotate as well as move up and down. A front mounted camera provides a virtual “see-through” hood, giving the driver a clear view of the road ahead.
Toyota FT-3e The Toyota FT-3e is a next-generation Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) concept that aims to create a better world by serving as a transfer medium for energy and data, connecting the car to the society it belongs to. The exterior features clean lines and surfaces, embodying the essence of minimalistic elegance. Adding a touch of futurism to the concept’s design are digital displays running from the lower side body to the upper door. These displays provide information such as battery charge, onboard temperature, and interior quality.

Nissan Hyper Punk The Nissan Hyper Punk was designed for a very specific target audience, aimed at content creators, influencers, artists, and those who embrace style and innovation. Some interesting features of the Hyper Punk include exterior cameras that record the scenery around the car, and an artificial intelligence-powered tool that converts these images to either mangastyle landscapes or graphic patterns.
Subaru Sport Mobility Is it a coupe? A crossover? A sportscar? The Subaru Sport Mobility doesn’t seem to fit in any current automotive genre, and that’s a good thing. Chunky body panels surround a low roof and long profile, with thin headlights keeping things sleek. While more of a design project than an actual upcoming model, the Subaru Sport Mobility concept breathes some muchneeded excitement to the brand. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to have Subaru’s excellent all-wheel drive system paired with sporty EV intentions.

Toyota FT-Se Designed as an option for sportscars in the carbon-neutral era, the Toyota FT-Se encapsulates the expertise acquired from Toyota Gazoo Racing’s motorsports achievements. The concept aims to achieve superior handling stability and aerodynamic performance, sharing significant components with the FT-3e with wide and low proportions combined with a sleek silhouette that minimizes aerodynamic drag.
Toyota Land Cruiser Se As the future of the renowned Land Cruiser model, the Land Cruiser Se concept definitely caught our eye. It’s a three-row battery electric SUV that offers a unique blend of elegance, style, and high-torque driving performance. Unlike its predecessors, the Land Cruiser Se concept is built with a monocoque body, which aims to enhance the vehicle’s aesthetics while providing highly responsive handling. Only time will tell if it has the off-roading chops that its predecessors had.

DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE LIGHT BULB WAS INVENTED IN 1878 BY THOMAS EDISON, AND THAT WE LIVE IN TIMES WHERE FULLY ELECTRIC CARS ARE BEING MASS PRODUCED FOR GLOBAL CONSUMPTION, to this day, there are places around the world that do not have access to this 145-year-old technology. Why, you might ask? Well, there is the fact that 46.9 percent of the world live in poverty so having lights in their homes and classrooms for their daily activities isn’t in their priorities. Then there is also the fact that not all places in the world have a dependable energy source. This is where the Liter of Light, a global movement that is committed to providing affordable and sustainable solar light to people with limited or no access to electricity, comes in to save the day. The Liter of Light was created by the MyShelter Foundation in 2011 to provide poor communities with a source of light that they can use using things readily available around them. They started by using plastic bottles filled with clean water mixed with a bit of bleach, which were installed on the roofs of houses to provide them with a free daylight source. This method was highly efficient and helpful in saving electricity during the day. Still, it did not solve the problem of having no light source at night, so they developed their technology more. Now, they not only have solar bottles with solar panels and an LED bulb, which solves the nighttime issues, but also offer more products derived from their technology and methodologies, namely the Solar Lamp, House Light, and Street Light, in addition to their improved Bottle Light which now has a durable switch to conserve battery life further because the initial models for this used to switch on automatically the moment the solar panel cannot detect light. The saying goes, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” What the Liter of Light was able to do with their solar lights strongly reminded me of this saying because they not only gave men fish by installing these efficient and money-saving lights into their homes but also gave those whose lives they were able to touch a chance to make an honest living and bring the world a step into a better direction. They did so by equipping the communities they reached with the knowledge to create these solar lights and many other useful gadgets like mobile charging systems, all while still using locally sourced materials. Doing so gave them a chance to make money while serving this wonderful cause, even when the organization moved to its next location. Considering all these facts, in addition to how their movement made their technology open-source so that it could easily and freely be replicated by anyone with basic carpentry and

Five Decades of BMW M Words:

WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE? That ineffable question must’ve been in the minds of those who owned and engineered BMWs back in the early 1970s. Just a decade prior, the Bavarian automaker was in dire straits churning out tiny space-saving econoboxes like the Isetta and the 600. In 1962, down on their last legs, the company banked on the idea of creating a new line of sports sedans and coupes. Dubbed the New Class Sedans, they’d truly stumbled upon a breakthrough. And from then on, it would spur a rethink of their philosophy and their racing heritage would revolve around the singular letter we all know and unfortunately, take for granted today: the M. While sounding like a mere footnote in its long, complicated history, the success of the BMW New Class sedans really do play a key role in the creation of its Motorsports division. Thanks to a nearly 50% increase in profit, it meant that BMW’s financial security at that point in time was guaranteed. For the first time in over two decades, the company was able to pay dividends to its shareholders and could now focus on showcasing its engineering prowess to the world–and it did so brilliantly. BMWs were racking up wins during this period. The European Touring Car Championships in 1966, 1968 and 1969

FOCUS ON as well as the 24 Hours of Spa in both 1965 and 1966 were all won by a driver behind a BMW. So by 1972, it was only fitting that the company would make a division that cemented its place in the annals of Motorsport. About the same time, a business executive by the name of Robert Lutz stepped in and became one of the board members at BMW. Not a lot of people are aware of this, but Bob Lutz is the reason why the company continues to feature their now-signature kidney grille, which they were already meaning to kill off before he came aboard. He is also responsible for the nomenclature that BMW follows to this day. Swiss-born but raised in California, Lutz had a knack for doing things the western way, which was probably why he was a firm believer in the popular American saying, “win on Sunday, sell on Monday,” which he took with him when he began setting up shop for BMW’s eponymously-named Motorsport division.

The first order of business for Lutz was to consolidate all of BMW’s racing ventures into one roof. He also staked his intention to bring back the brand’s touring car program which had been shelved for a short period following its previous success. In order to instantly develop a winning mindset among the small team, he brought in the services of the previous year’s European Touring Car Champion Hans-Joachim Stuck and the team’s manager Jochen Neerpasch from Ford. With a winning team and the support of the company behind him, all he and the 35 other employees of BMW Motorsport needed now was to build the winning car. Coming at a mere 2,341 pounds (1,062 kg) the BMW 3.0 CSL, BMW Motorsport’s first creation as a collective, was an absolute monster. The maniacal attention to detail when it came to weight reduction such as using thinner gauge steel on its body panels, using polycarbonate on all the rear windows, and switching out its hood supports for a “bunch of sticks,” meant that one could feel the 203 Horsepower of its inline six-cylinder in its entirety. On track, the 3.0 CSL decimated the competition even going against the likes of the Porsche 911. It
FOCUS ON won the European Touring Car Championship in its maiden season in 1973 with five more to come by the end of the decade. While the 3.0 CSL, affectionately known as the Batmobile, is considered to be BMW Motorsport’s first vehicle, the sports car to solely have the M badge on it wouldn’t come until the very end of that decade in 1978. Through the revival of a previously terminated mid-engine sports car project several years prior and a failed partnership with Lamborghini, the E26, better known to everyone as the BMW M1, was born. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and his company Italdesign, the M1 was both BMW Motorsport as well as its parent company BMW’s halo car at the end of the seventies. It featured several innovations that were previously unheard of in a car from the brand, things like a tubular space-frame chassis, a fiberglass body, and six separate throttle bodies for its 3.5-liter inline-6 engine. As impressive as the vehicle truly was–and it continues to be celebrated
As impressive as the vehicle truly was–and it continues to be celebrated to this day–being a product of its generation made M1's existence difficult to justify to this day–being a product of its generation made M1's existence difficult to justify. Production ended three years later in 1981 with only a mere 453 units of the wedge-shaped supercar ever made, making the M1 an absolute rarity. By the early 1980s though, despite the slight knock on the BMW M brand caused by the failure of the M1, the team was still stronger than ever. At this point, the semi-autonomous division had over 380 employees and had branched out to more specialized engineering tasks such as highperformance engine and chassis technology. One of the fruits of this broader scope was the BMW M5 which was first launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1985. Based on the 535i chassis, the very first M5s had the underpinnings of their lesser-successful brother, the M1, making it the fastest production sedan in the world at the time of its launch. The car was a hit all over the world, especially in North America, with production figures soaring beyond BMW’s initial production projections leading to a class-action lawsuit due to the amount of unfulfilled orders (which was settled in 1993). The success of the M5 led to the development of its smaller, compact executive sports sedan counterpart, the BMW M3.

It was also at this time that BMW M partnered with McLaren, supplying the British automobile manufacturer with a 6.1-liter, V12 engine for their supercar project The development of the E30 M3 later in the year in 1985 was meant to satisfy the homologation requirements for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM). Having just stepped away from the world of Formula 1, BMW Motorsport developed 5,000 units of the modified highperformance version of the 3-Series just in time for the DTM season 1986. A year later in 1987 it would win the World Touring Car Championship with Roberto Ravaglia driving and went on to become the most decorated touring car of all time, winning the 24 Hours of Nürburgring five times, the 24 Hours of Spa four times, and the DTM, the competition it was meant for, three times. BMW Motorsport officially changed its name to BMW M in 1993, having been more than just a motorsports arm since the better part of the previous decade. Over the course of the next two decades, BMW M would continue to release several other M models as well as M-badged versions of nearly every conceivable standard BMW model. It was also at this time that BMW M partnered with McLaren, supplying the British automobile manufacturer with a 6.1-liter, V12 engine for their supercar project. They would install the M70/2 on what would become their monstrosity, the McLaren F1, which went on to become the world's fastest production car as well as win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.

Over four decades from the release of their very first standalone vehicle, the M1 and at the turn of their fifth decade of existence, BMW M came out with just their second vehicle developed solely by them, the BMW XM. Fitted with a 4.4-liter V8, the full-size crossover comes with a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain with a combined power output of 644 BHP. BMW M also came out with an even more powerful version called the Label Red with a shared output of 744 HP, completely far removed from the heady days of the 3.0 CSL. People who aren’t in-the-know like to joke about the true meaning of the M badge. For most of them, the M simply means “Marketing,” a sales ploy to get people to buy BMWs with window-dressing. The company’s portfolio says otherwise, however. Time and time again, the BMW M brand has continued to provide its naysayers proof that what they do is more than just widen wheel arches and sew a bunch of their logos on floor mats with championships, world records, and fastest lap times at the Nurburgring. Where do you go when you already have the Ultimate Driving Machine, you may ask? To the top of the podium, that’s where.

Plastic Identity The art of covering up the engine
I
hate to say it, but the days when any car nut could instantly recognize what kind of engine a car had by merely looking at the valve cover are long gone. Remember how iconic the Chrysler 426 Hemi valve cover or the Toyota 18RG valve cover looked like? Aside from being highly identifiable, merely looking at the whole engine was already a free lesson in automotive engineering; simple stuff such as being able to trace how gasoline flows into the engine or how exhaust gases are expelled. What’s more, it could also teach more complex stuff like determining cylinder head design. A quick glance will tell if it adopted a cross flow cylinder head design, where the exhaust and intake ports were located opposite each other or a reverse flow design, which had both ports on the same side. In addition, it also allowed for basic troubleshooting skills to be learned, such as determining the firing order, getting the best gap between the contact point, unclogging a dirty fuel filter, or a gazillion other DIY quick fixes. This was possible back in the day because the whole engine could be viewed in plain sight. You could see all the major components like the induction and ignition system. Considering that OBD scanners were non-existent back then, all you had to rely on was good old fashioned troubleshooting skills. Because as we all know, as long as the engine has air, fuel and spark, it will and should run. Sadly, those mechanically intuitive days are over, for the modern automobile has reached the age of the unsightly plastic engine cover. Hiding the engine from plain view, one is left to wonder what sort of components lie underneath and what actually goes on. For any car enthusiast, this is more of a letdown as the engine remains a very important aspect
78

of any automobile. Something that should be seen and not hidden. Isn’t that the reason why the hoods are left open during a car show where enthusiasts mill around inspecting and asking the all too important and frequently asked question, how much power does it make? But what’s really hard to understand is that according to what I’ve read, these plastic covers serve to reduce engine noise and unsightly visual roughness. If it’s really making a lot of audible engine noises and resembles nothing like what an engine should, then there must be something wrong with the entire design, requiring something made of plastic to cover it all up. The internal combustion engine may have evolved but it still follows the basic 4-stroke principle where it was built upon. If engines didn’t have them back then, why do they need it now? Shouldn’t today’s current generation of engines operate more smoothly and quietly with better-made reciprocating components as opposed to the gas-guzzling carbureted engines of yesteryears? Appearance matters and it’s no secret how much money car manufacturers pour into the vehicle’s overall design that should include engine design. After all, consider the fact that almost every new car buyer takes time to look at the engine whether they understand it or not. Just like being able to look and appreciate how the glass vacuum tubes of a vintage amplifier glow to life, I think everyone wants to see what he or she is buying and that includes the engine that’s not hiding behind an aesthetic plastic mask. Whether it’s a marketing ploy by the car manufacturers to prevent car nuts from tinkering with the engine or further alienating them from the automobile so that we may progress towards driver-less modes of transport is anyone’s guess. What’s really alarming though is that the car owner is left
at the mercy of the car manufacturer as this prevents any form of basic troubleshooting, modding or simply being able to visually check the engine for leaks or defects. Based on personal experience, I have removed the engine cover on our family sedan and didn’t hear any form of added engine noise. What I do gladly notice is that I can see the engine much better now and makes it easier for me to clean the engine without it. When something is covered by up a non-functional piece of plastic that seems to be obstructing what one is supposed to see, this becomes a problem. What car manufacturers need to understand is that mechanically inclined people or more commonly known as gearheads/car nut, enthusiast, and more have complex relationships with engines. A relationship wherein the engine is considered as the soul of the automobile, which makes it a very powerful emotional switch. Remember, say NO to plastic engine covers and keep it tuned.

seemed not too long ago when a select group of individuals thought it would be a good idea to organize a secret meet that started with thirty cars and a drive up in the mountains. From creating their own web board to the launching of their official www.JDMUnderground.ph website, JDMU has certainly come a long way. Numerous “Yabanagan Noons/Nights” have been successfully held that only continue to get bigger and better. Just like this year’s opening event that was held exclusively at the SMX Convention Center where it filled an entire hall. A total of 80 cars representing nothing but the best rides from the members were on display and vied for the People's Choice award. What’s more, there was plenty more to see at the basement parking area; judging by the looks of it, it certainly looked and felt like one huge car show. As JDMU recently celebrated its 15th anniversary as a car community, they continue to be an organization that takes pride in being ‘purveyors of clean Japanese tuning. In other words, JDMU really means business when it comes to modding their rides. Held at Blue Bay Walk, Macapagal, what made it even more special was that it served as the venue for the unveiling of the Top 15 builds. Voted among JDMU members, a poll was created beforehand which consisted of a lot of member cars, but it ultimately came down to the top 15 with the most number of votes. Taking center stage during the event, the Top 15 builds were separately displayed and received awards and special banners. The event also celebrated the birthday of the late Pow Anticamara who was one of the founders of JDMU and whose mentorship and being a friend to everyone will be forever missed. Congratulations to JDMU!

Based in Germany, this tuning house specializes in exotic builds, such as supercars and luxury SUVs, but what truly sets them apart are their 20 years of experience in manufacturing carbon fiber composites. Something

that allows them to come up with aggressively styled body kits and the level of quality that clearly shows along with the insanely uniform carbon fiber weave pattern. Just like its comprehensive styling packages for the Bentley Continental GT and Mercedes G-Class, every Keyvany component is designed in-house. For the Urus, Keyvany has a comprehensive exterior, interior and performance package complete with 24-inch wheels. In fact, Keyvany calls it the “Keyrus” (named after the combination of the first syllables of the word "Keyvany" and the last syllable of "Urus"). So, when a client of Keith Bryan Haw of Importhookup wanted to have the most modded Urus in the country, he already knew what to do as
Keith quips, “I immediately suggested this program to the owner as it’s the wildest Urus program to date with all the carbon fiber parts.” For starters, let’s delve into the visually striking exterior that screams custom modified. While it is still identifiable as an Urus, it’s loaded with enough carbon fiber parts and panels to make even full-on racecars turn green with envy. Adding 29 mm to the already imposing Urus, the Keyrus aero kit consists of wide carbon fiber fenders (front and rear), incorporating a massive side sill with integrated air intakes to cool the brakes. Then there’s the front and rear bumper that completely replace the factory original units. The “Y” LED accent lights on the bumper vent also creates a nice detail. One cannot miss the wild looking front and rear diffusers, carbon fiber side view mirrors, side skirts, a pair of rear wings, plus a vented hood. All of which work wonderfully in elevating the looks of the Urus. What’s more impressive is that despite having replaced a lot of panels, Keyvany was able to shave 80 kg from its original weight. Installing the Keyvany carbon fiber panels is just one aspect of this build. The other crucial step involves paint refinishing and creativity that can make or break the build. Keith worked closely with Alex Isip to determine which panels should retain its carbon fiber finish, and which ones should be color matched with the Lamborghini Rosso Mars color. Doing so worked wonders in creating a lot of detail and contrast between the red finish and carbon fiber. But the most striking detail would have to be the black paint fade on the hood vents. The airbrush was laid out so carefully that one can see faint traces of the carbon fiber weave as it fades away. It's reminiscent of air vents found on jet aircraft with traces of black residue. “I pushed Alex to do paint fade color technique, which he had never done, and we hadn't seen before. I wanted to have the right balance of exposed and painted carbon fiber and didn’t follow the Keyvany demo car. After all, I know we can do a better paint combo here,” Keith adds. The Keyvany package
TECH & TUNER
also comes with plenty of carbon fiber interior bits that can be found all throughout the interior, like the air vents, the surrounds on the central console, and even a carbon fiber shell on the back of the front seats. Substantially filling the massive wheel arches of the Urus are 24-inch wheels also from Keyvany. Finished in gloss black, Keith had the outer lip color-matched to incorporate it into the build theme. Small details that matter a lot when viewing the build as a whole. A set of lowering links lower the Urus, which Keith had to source somewhere else. According to Keith, the ones from Keyvany weren’t low enough and added spacers to make the tires line up perfectly against the fenders. Power-wise, the Urus already has more than enough with 600 plus horsepower on tap. But it gets an additional 200-plus horses after they added an Eventuri intake, Keyvany sports exhaust system with carbon tail pipes and a software tune using an mcchip-dkr Stage 3 software. “Even if it’s a catalogue build, where most of the parts are from Keyvany. I put my own Importhookup touches like painting the wheels with red accents, exposed carbon etc. This build was a tough one too as I only had 3 weeks to build and execute everything with Alex given the timeline of TransSportShow.” As Keith sums up his build that won the Best of Show Contemporary, Best Body Kit and 1st place Luxury SUV class. Indeed, this modded Urus is an incredible piece of work and will never fail to make a scene or garner attention anywhere it rolls up to. It may seem over the top for some, but then again, it’s no ordinary SUV either.

Shimano SLX Enthusiasts typically refer to SLX as the starting point of true performance-grade Shimano groupsets. When was the last time you had an oil change? The engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It keeps the many components of the engine working efficiently, and it helps reduce the accumulation of varnish and carbon from collecting on the engine. As oil collects heat, varnish and carbons during the course of protecting and keeping the engine running smoothly, it eventually turns to sludge, no matter how good the oil is. That’s when you should have your oil changed.

A Paradigm Shift in Riding Dynamics
I
n recent times, the motorcycle industry has undergone a significant transformation with the introduction of electric motorcycles. This shift towards more environmentally friendly technology not only impacts the ecological landscape but also reshapes the fundamental aspects of riding dynamics. A key advantage of electric motorcycles is their instantaneous torque delivery. In contrast to traditional internal combustion engines, which require a gradual increase in RPMs to reach peak torque, electric motors deliver maximum torque right from the start. This characteristic results in rapid and responsive acceleration, providing riders with a thrilling experience that goes beyond the traditional riding paradigm. Moreover, many electric motorcycles eliminate the need for a conventional gearbox, simplifying the riding experience. Without the necessity for clutch manipulation or gear shifting, riders can concentrate more on enjoying the journey. This simplicity caters not only to experienced riders but also lowers the entry barrier for newcomers to the realm of motorcycling. The electric powertrain introduces a new dimension to handling and maneuverability. Electric motorcycles often feature a lower center of gravity due to battery placement, enhancing stability and control. Combined with centralized mass distribution, this results in agile and nimble handling, making

electric motorcycles a delight to navigate through both urban environments and winding roads. Another factor influencing the future of riding dynamics is regenerative braking. While not universal, some electric motorcycles capture energy during deceleration, converting it back into electrical power. This not only extends the bike's range but also introduces a nuanced approach to braking. Riders can fine-tune their braking inputs, offering a level of control and finesse previously unparalleled in the world of motorcycling. Nevertheless, challenges persist. Concerns about range anxiety associated with electric vehicles are actively being addressed by manufacturers. Rapid advancements in battery technology hold the promise of increased energy density and extended ranges, alleviating these concerns. In summary, the era of electric motorcycles signifies a transformative phase for riding dynamics. The combination of instantaneous torque, simplified controls, and innovative features brings a fresh perspective to the traditional motorcycling experience. As technology evolves, electric motorcycles are poised to be more than just an ecofriendly alternative, becoming an exciting and dynamic choice for riders seeking a new dimension in their two-wheeled adventures. The journey ahead is not merely about embracing sustainability; it's about entering a future where the thrill of riding is redefined by the electrifying pulse of innovation.

motorcycle can mean a lot of things to different riders. Some want the thrill of speed, others enjoy the cruise, and most just want to filter through heavy traffic. That being said, all of these riders want a bike that is lightweight, accessible, and fun. Enter the CFMOTO 450NK. The 450NK stands out with its performancedriven features. Powered by a parallel-twin engine equipped with a 270-degree crankshaft, it has a charismatic, V-twin-like power delivery with 47 hp at 9,500 rpm and 29 lb-ft of torque @ 7,600 rpm. This gives it an advantage over its counterparts, offering more power with similar weight at 165 kg. During its launch, we were able to ride the 450NK to Subic Bay through NLEX, and SCTEX. Of course, I had to put it through the proper paces and stretch its legs as much as it would allow. That morning, I was handed a newly activated unit with less than 100 kilometers on the clock.

“The power delivery is quite smooth and linear. It pulls even over the redline which makes it a hoot to ride. The spread of power on the rev range is very usable at various situations.”
Needless to say, I was to be the guy to break it in. To test durability and reliability, as soon as I passed the Balintawak tollgate, my hand had the throttle pinned all the way to the stop. I ploughed through all six gears beyond the redline and was soon cruising at speeds above 180 km/h and maintaining it as long as traffic allowed. At speeds above 170 km/h, I felt the front-end get light and become more and more sensitive to rider inputs. Even the slightest movement was enough to make the front twitch a little. It's nothing to worry about really if you know what you're doing. It's a really light bike without any sort of wind protection so twitchyness can be expected. This to me validated the 450SR’s (the 450NK’s fully faired brother) use of winglets. The power delivery is quite smooth and linear. It pulls even over the redline which makes it a hoot to ride. The spread of power on the rev range is very usable at various situations. The engine exudes character, making it feel like a miniature version of a certain Italian motorcycle’s L-twin. It makes you want to keep twisting the throttle grip and eggs you on abusing it. The transmission is buttery smooth allowing you to do clutchless shifting up and down the gears. The Subic ride showed me how well built the engine and transmission is. It took all the abuse I threw at it and just smiled at me. Not even a hint of moisture from the head, block and valve cover, and this was just activated right before I did my real world torture test. A few weeks later, I found myself at the CFMOTO campus in Hangzhou China where the 450NK was made. My jaw dropped as I witnessed how it was built. The facility was at the level of high-end European manufacturing. It was state of the art, with all the latest tools, gizmos, and robots. The place is so huge and super clean, it is exactly the kind of place you’d want your bike to come out of. No wonder the 450NK didn't even bat an eyelash to what I put it through. After that trip, I had the 450NK for about a month. I used it as my primary mountain pass weapon, pitting it against the best bikes the world has to offer. I was riding with Ducati Panigales, Aprilia Tuonos, Yamaha MT10 SPs, and other liter bikes, up and down the mountain. I was neck and neck with all of them, and even passing most. Of course, those bikes would get me on the straights. But the 450NK performed remarkably well considering it had only a quarter of the power those bikes have. On the corners, the 450NK is an absolute weapon, flicking sharply from side to side. On its ear, mid corner, it was very stable, and the engine blasts it out onto the exit better than any sub500cc bike has the right to do so. The engine is a

gem! With the traction control off, I was pulling wheelies at will. It's so easy to do on this bike! If only there was a switch to turn off the ABS, I probably would have been terrorizing the streets with slides and stoppies. It’s so hard to contain my inner hooligan with this bike! The suspension, though non-adjustable, is firm enough to handle high speed corners but can be a bit harsh in the bumpy bits. I would replace the rear shock and have the front fork tuned for better damping. The CST tires are very grippy on dry roads but may not be ideal for heavy rain situations. The brakes are handled by a J. Juan caliper paired to a 320mm rotor up front and a 220mm rotor paired to a HANGTE caliper at the rear. Stopping power is adequate even for high speed riding. You get a 5-inch full TFT dash, traction control, ABS, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB charging. The bike is very accessible to vertically challenged riders with a 795mm seat height and

narrow seat. Its lightweight and short reach to the ground make this bike very easy to handle even for new riders. Now, no bike is perfect, there are a couple of things that need to be improved. The fueling at low speeds can be a bit twitchy, feeling like an on and off switch. Most modern FI bikes have this problem due to emissions compliance. This can easily be remedied with a reflash by richening the low rpm map. Next is the lack of bungee cord anchors to hook on to. I could complain about this bike being thirsty for its engine size but that's a trade off for the 270-degree crank. Crossplane cranks are naturally thirstier than their flat plane crank counterparts but then you don't get as much character and great spread of power across the rev range. With a SRP of PhP 262,800 those minor niggles are negligible considering what you get out of the package. You get a naughty, very willing, and capable bike that stands above its competition. The fun factor alone is worth twice the price tag!

The expansive underseat storage enhances practicality, providing abundant space for your essentials to effortlessly organize within its generous confines. The low seat height of 770 mm, flat floor pan color-matched to the bodywork, and elegant anti-slip slats contribute to the scooter's aesthetic appeal while being highly functional. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a novice, comfort reigns supreme, allowing riders of all sizes to effortlessly handle the scooter. The minimal overall weight and compact size make maneuvering through crowded streets a breeze, offering an agile and responsive urban riding experience. On the open twisty roads of MARILAQUE, the Django handles the turns pretty well with its neutral steering and relaxed road manners. The suspension lets the scooter
float through bumps like a cloud. Only the really terrible potholes would disrupt the Django's composure on the road. Despite the 12-inch wheels, and low body lines, the Django has good ground clearance allowing me to do figure 8s without scraping anything. It's either that or it is because it was raining heavily during the day of testing. But, as you would see in the photos, I was leaning it quite aggressively without anything hitting the deck. I was particularly impressed by how Peugeot designed the gas tank, placing it at a very low area on the bike without having a tunnel go through the floorboard. This makes the Django’s center of gravity very low, making the bike feel lightweight despite its size. The digital/analogue dash of the Peugeot Django strikes the perfect balance between legibility and modernity, encapsulating a vintage aesthetic that complements the scooter's overall design. It's not just a ride; it's a visual experience that bridges the gap between the past and the present. Underneath the stylish exterior lies a robust powertrain. The air-cooled, four-stroke, SOHC twin-valve single-cylinder engine boasts a displacement of 150.6 cc, delivering a relaxed performance on the urban roads. This engine setup may not produce the best performance, but it guarantees reliability, and longevity. The motor produces 11.3 horsepower and a max torque rating of 8.3 lb-ft, ensuring adequate power. The automatic transmission setup allows the Django to accelerate better than its engine rating suggests, allowing it to squirt through traffic, and overtake vehicles with ease. I saw an indicated 100 km/h on the clock while riding through the long stretches of Marcos Highway, and between 60 and 80 km/h going up the mountain pass. The exhaust belts out a characterful yet unobtrusive sound that somehow reminds me of much older and simpler motorcycles. I found the 200mm front and rear disc brakes to be okay, enough to reel in the Django when needed. I would suggest replacing the brake fluid with something with higher spec like DOT 5.1 as I had the rear brake boil down to nothing in heavy traffic situations where I was constantly on it. The Django's fairings provided good weather protection as I didn't get soaked even though it

was raining throughout my ride, it did a good job of dissipating the rain away from me. I loved that there is a comfortable area to anchor my legs and feet on to the scooter keeping my body stable and locked on to the Django. I would've liked the notch or the divide between the rider, and pillion seats to be further back. See I always have my legs and feet in contact with the center of any motorcycle to keep my upper body stable and relaxed and doing so with the Django makes my bum sit directly on top of that notch between the two seats. It's just a minor niggle though, and would not detract from my enjoyment riding the Django. In conclusion, the Peugeot Django 150 is a modern-retro scooter that seamlessly blends nostalgia with innovation, offering riders a unique and captivating journey with French style and comfort. HORWIN CR6
A Traditional Take on New Motorcycle Technology OLD-SCHOOL CAFÉ RACER LOOKS ON AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Words:

n the world of electric motorcycles, the Horwin CR6 comes in as a distinctive option, breaking away from the electric motorcycle mold with its more conventional motorcycle design. In this review, we'll dissect the various aspects of this electric motorcycle, from its design and performance to its specifications and value proposition. The CR6 Pro presents a striking visual identity that sets it apart from other electric bikes. Priced just under PhP 400,000, it positions itself as an intriguing option for riders seeking a blend of tradition and innovation. The CR6 exudes classic motorcycle feels that defies the typical expectations associated with electric motorcycles. Powering the CR6 Pro is a 'high torque' 6200w motor supplied by a 72v 55Ah lithium-ion battery. This setup mirrors the performance of a 125cc petrol engine, and has the ability to conquer hills with ease. The CR6 excels in ride quality, navigating both city streets and open country roads. The steering provides a balanced mix of stability and comfortable, easy turning, making it versatile in various riding conditions. Riding the CR6 along EDSA, I found the motor to have similar power to 125cc internal combustion scooters on its top end but takes quite some time to build up speed due to the way the motor is governed. There is no instant torque here, unlike on other EVs. I saw an indicated 100 km/h along EDSA and it felt like it could go a bit faster but I doubt that the speedometer is a bit optimistic. I find that its motor controller shuts off any throttle input when the brakes are applied. This is very annoying given that applying power while braking is a very common and essential motorcycling technique during slow speed maneuvers. I also find it odd that at this price point, and for something that should be at the forefront of technology in modern mobility, the CR6 does not even have ABS or a full TFT dash. On the plus side, I love the conventional riding dynamic of the chassis. The suspension soaks up bumps pretty well although it can feel unsettled when pushed on fast sweeping corners. I wish Horwin gave the CR6 a bit more ground clearance as it decks out quite early, spoiling some of the fun out of the potential that the bike has. The 17-inch wheels make the bike more fun as it mimics the characteristics of conventional motorcycling fun. The tires offer adequate grip and traction, perfect for the CR6’s abilities. The CR6 handles pretty well, feeling light and agile and is quite fun on city streets.

Can be fun, classic motorcycle aesthetic. Addressing the practicalities of electric motorcycles, the CR6 offers a realistic range of around 80 kms, making it ideal for urban riders. The three - four hour charge time from flat might be a limiting factor for longer journeys. On the positive side, the running costs are minimal, costing only about a few pesos to charge from flat. This financial advantage, coupled with the eco-friendly nature of electric power, positions the CR6 as an attractive option for riders looking to reduce their carbon footprint while keeping the feel and fun of a conventional motorcycle. The brakes contribute to smooth control at both low and high speeds. The absence of ABS might be a downside for some riders, but the overall braking performance ensures a confident and secure riding experience. Designed in Austria and manufactured in China, the CR6 showcases a blend of futuristic aesthetics and reliable construction. The alloy frame, composed of aluminum and magnesium,
contributes to a sturdy yet lightweight structure. The bike's overall build quality meets the expectations for an entry level big bike. While the bike's price tag of PhP 399,000 may raise eyebrows regarding certain components not being premium, the Horwin CR6 is the closest you would get to the appeal of a real conventional motorcycle from an EV here in the Philippines. In conclusion, the Horwin CR6 stands as an innovation in the local electric motorcycle landscape. Its unique blend of traditional elements, such as its classic motorcycle styling with modern electric power showcases a distinct and engaging experience. While the price may be a deterrent for some, the minimal running costs and eco-friendly profile make the CR6 a compelling choice for those seeking a different and modern approach to riding. As the electric motorcycle market continues to evolve, the CR6 paves the way for innovation in the intersection of tradition and technology.

ersey Mate is a padded inner lining that lets you ride in comfort without feeling stuffy and hot. This new product lets you ride with ease allowing you to stay fresh and cool while offering protection from impact in case of a spill. The Jersey Mate padded undershirt gives you the choice between CE levels 1 and 2 rated sets of impact protection that covers your back, shoulders, and elbows. There are also optional levels 1 and 2 chest protection pads that are sold separately but are already provisioned on the undershirt. Wearing Jersey Mate under your riding jersey, or whatever clothing you'd like to casually ride in, is so comfortable, you'll barely feel you’re wearing any protective gear at all. It's lightweight, and inconspicuous which is perfect for your leisurely short rides, errands, or daily commute. The fabric is made of fine quality breathable, and stretchable material, while the CE rated protective pads are sourced from international suppliers. Most importantly, Jersey Mate is 100% Filipino owned, and I am proud to say that it is a product that is of good standard. I find it so useful for different riding disciplines. For cruiser riders, it's usually just a shirt, a leather vest, gloves, and jeans. Now, with Jersey Mate, we have something to wear underneath those shirts that offer some degree of protection. Same goes for scooter riders that usually wear just hoodies or ordinary riding jerseys. Even casual light-trail riders would benefit from the Jersey Mate. Even skinny track riders could use the Jersey Mate as an inner suit to add additional impact absorption if their suits have enough room as most skinny riders do. Jersey Mate allows a full range of motion letting riders move freely, without hindrance to any riding maneuver. It allows the rider to move around the bike with ease. The fabric also allows air to pass through easily, keeping the rider cool and relaxed. You can wear it practically under any kind of clothing, permitting you to ride in style while being protected.

Of course, being an under garment, Jersey Mate does not have any abrasion resistance qualities. Keep in mind that this piece of gear only protects you from impacts. You definitely need to be wearing something over it for some road rash protection. At only PhP 4,995 for the shirt, and CE level 1 or 2 pads, and an optional PhP 750 for the CE level 1 chest pads or PhP 950 for the CE level 2 set, Jersey Mate strikes the perfect balance between everydaywear comfort, practicality, and protection, giving riders safety in almost every situation.
