MESSAGE FROM THE
DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE BROTHER SHAWN R. LACEY
With extreme humility and enthusiasm, I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Brothers – I am honored that you elected me to serve as your 31st District Representative of the mighty Third District, “The Birthplace of Omega,” where it all began on November 17, 1911. This is a role that I do not take lightly, as it is my goal to continue to move the District forward, standing on the shoulders of the esteemed Brothers who came before me. The District continues to exercise the Fraternity’s cardinal principles (Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift). Brothers, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity…” As iron sharpens iron, we will continue strengthening the tie that binds us through Friendship and Fellowship. The District has had numerous notable achievements. Some of these are: Pi Lambda Lambda was awarded the International Social Action Chapter of the Year award during the Dr. Moses C. Norman, Sr. Leadership Conference. The District chapters presented over $125,000 in scholarships to deserving students to assist them in achieving their academic aspirations. The Brothers participated in the “60th Anniversary March on Washington.” Additionally, thre was the celebration of chapters reaching monumental anniversary milestones – Gamma Omega (100th), Delta Omega (100th), Tau Omicron (75th), Phi Delta - Virginia Commonwealth University (50th), and Lambda Zeta - University of Virginia (50th). We recognized and celebrated our former Third District Representatives during the Fall Council. We continue to work towards bringing the District back to full strength by working to ensure all chapters are active. We have encouraged and continue our efforts to ensure we support and keep our undergraduate brothers engaged in Omega’s business by assisting them with attending the International Undergraduate Summit and hosting the Winter Council meeting on Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus (Phi Delta). Brothers, continue to “Live Your Creed,” serve and be leaders in your community and remain steadfast and faithful to your faith and the principles of Omega. Thank you, Brothers. I pray for God to continue to bless you and your family and provide you with an abundance of overflow. “Strengthening The Brotherhood Through Friendship And Fellowship”

60TH ANNIVERSARY MARCH ON WASHINGTON, DC
THIRD DISTRICT PARTICIPATES IN THIS HISTORICAL EVENT
42nd Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., respectively. Brother Jackson represented Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in outstanding Omega fashion and excellence. He delivered compelling and inspirational words of encouragement to the tens of thousands in attendance and hundreds of thousands viewing via various social media platforms and news networks.
On Saturday, August 26, 2023, the men of the Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. participated in the monumental 60th anniversary and commemoration of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. August 28, 1963, March on Washington, DC. The event was held on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the same as our beloved leader, Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., with the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial and facing the reflecting pool and Washington Monument. The event started at 8am on a sunny, hot day. The Third District Social Action Chairman – Ricardo Robinson, was the coordinator for the Brothers of the Third District. Brother Calvin Beidleman – Third District Director of Public Relations, was in attendance to witness and document this historic occasion. Additionally, numerous Omega Men from the Third District and across the Nation were in attendance. Brother Mark E. Jackson – 1st Vice Grand Basileus, was in attendance. He greeted all in attendance on behalf of Brother Ricky L. Lewis – Page 20
Brother Jackson encouraged all to draw inspiration from our civil rights pioneers (A. Philip Randolph, Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr., Congressman John L. Lewis, and Brother Bayards Rustin) who came before us and laid the groundwork. In 1963, these leaders called for an end to segregation, economic injustice, fair wages, voting rights, and long overdue civil rights protections. His message included a “Call To Action,” emphasizing the fight for civil rights and equality is not a spectator sport. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” ~~
Martin L. King Jr The other members of the Divine Nine (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity) organizations were represented in strong numbers. The great leaders of the Divine Nine organizations echoed some of the same sentiments. All speakers appeared to understand that we are continuing to fight some of the same issues currently in 2023 that were present in 1963. Unfortunately, in some cases, we have had the displeasure of watching some rights be removed or become harder to obtain. For example, legislation has been passed in some states, making it hard for African Americans to vote. Additionally, our very African American history is being modified or restricted in certain educational systems.
and speakers present. Included was Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the National Action Network (NAN), Arndrea Waters King, President of the Drum Major Institute, and Martin Luther King, III, Chairman of the Drum Major Institute and a host of others providing inspirational and words of encouragement while reminding all in attendance that the fight continues and we need to remain diligent, persistent, and persevere through the hardships of today to ensure our we provide a solid example for our youth that will follow after us. Our youth will need to know that Life for us was not a crystal stair…we kept going in the dark when there was no light…we didn’t set down on the stairs when we found it kinder hard…we didn’t fall; we kept on goin’. The marching route was about 1.5 miles. Marchers lined up on Lincoln Circle NW, proceeded South on 23rd St., and crossed through the median onto the Southern portion of Independence Ave. They marched to West Potomac Park, serving as the dispersal point.
The National Action Network and numerous partners organized the event. In the true spirit of Martin L. King, Jr., the March was nonviolent. There were numerous prominent and influential historical Civil Rights leaders

he Omega men from the Third District and world-wide were in attendance, during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) 52nd Annual Legislative Conference hosted on September 20-24, 2023, at the Nation’s Capital – Washington, DC, in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Amazon presented this year’s conference. The theme was “Securing Our Democracy. Protecting Our Freedoms. Uplifting Our Culture.” The conference is noteworthy and connects well with the very foundational principles of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., as the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) considers the Annual Legislative Conference as the “leading policy conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global Black community.” Omega men joined in with the other thought leaders, legislators, and elected officials to address and discuss various concerns related to economic development, civil and social justice, health, education, and much more that have and continue to impact the African American communities. On September 22, 2023, Brother Ricky L. Lewis – Grand Basileus, Brothers Shawn R. Lacey – Third District Representative, and Robert W. Representative James E. Clyburn’s – “Tragedy on the Horizon: Substance Abuse Affecting Black Fathers, Young Men, and Boys” panel discussion. The panelists provided some personal and unique perspectives related to the issue. Brother Lewis–Grand Basileus provided an encouraging message as the over 150 attendees listened attentively. Brother Robert W. Fairchild – Political Action/ Government Affairs Chairman, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., made the following statement: Black fathers, young men, and boys are facing a quiet crisis requiring attention and must be addressed. This is not just an adult issue. Many victims, whether it be a father or son loss, can have a devastating
effect on a family. The frustration of dealing with day-to-day issues has caused individuals to look for relief in the wrong places. Substance abuse laced with harmful additives can and has resulted in too many tragic results. There have been situations where young men believed they were taking pills for pain relief, drugs like Valium or Percocet purchased from friends or social media, which were later found
to be counterfeits. The medicine did not come from a pharmacy and it contained fentanyl, a potent, often deadly, synthetic opioid of which 2 milligrams can kill you. Many deaths have occurred due to overdosing. Failure to address this issue of overdose promptly will continue to result in deaths. Fentanyl continues to be a serious threat to youth.

A MEMORABLE DAY OF FOOTBALL AND CONNECTION FOR YOUNG MEN OF DISTINCTION
O
n Saturday, October 7, 2023, a group of twenty-seven young men from Achievable Dream Middle/High School, known as “The Young Men of Distinction,” had an unforgettable experience at a football game hosted by Hampton University. Alongside mentoring them were the supportive brothers of the Kappa Iota Iota Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This event was part of a series encouraging fathers and father figures to participate actively in their children’s lives. The day blossomed into something special despite the initially cloudy, rainy, and chilly weather. The students had a blast interacting with the Hampton Pirate Mascot, engaging with the spirited cheerleaders, and immersing themselves in the lively atmosphere created by the Hampton University Marching Band. What resonated most with these young men were the connections they formed. Many expressed their joy in interacting with the college students, while others cherished spending quality time with their fathers or father figures. The event was a testament to
the importance of bonding and mentorship in a young person’s life. As the day progressed, the weather took a turn for the better, transitioning from gloomy to clear, sunny skies with warm temperatures. This change in weather seemed symbolic, mirroring the warmth and positivity that permeated the hearts of all those in attendance, making it a day to remember for the Young Men of Distinction.

MENTORING YOUTH WITH A 3D PRINTING DEMONSTRATION
O
n Saturday, May 20, 2023, the Kappa Psi Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. DC Rhinos participated in their latest session, which was a 3D Printing Demonstration. Needless to say, it was a hit! The Rhinos were impressed with the capabilities of the 3D Printer. The conversations surrounding what was possible were incredible. Brother Kevin Poplar led the session with a highly informative introduction to the concept of 3D printing, covering the different types of printers and the many capabilities of each one. The Brothers also dove a little deeper into what you could use the printer to create. Everything from chess pieces to artificial limbs can be printed. The options seemed limitless!
After the orientation into the different types of printers, Brother Poplar explained the different parts of the printer. He pointed out the frame, printer bed, nozzle, cooling fan, and extruder, to name a few. The Rhinos then had to point out the components of the printer afterward. It was nice to see they were paying close attention because everyone knew the correct answer to the question, when asked.
it was attached correctly. Once everything looked in order, they started printing the coin. As the printer quietly printed the coin, the Brothers ate lunch and fellowshipped with the Rhinos. The Brothers talked about the importance of Black men and women in STEM related fields as well as their potential impacts on society. When asked why it was important for minorities to be involved in STEM, Brother Poplar mentioned, “Introducing the DC Rhinos to STEM via 3D Printing was a great way to show them the endless opportunities of technology. By the end of the session, they were thinking of objects and pieces that could be made and sold for profit to their classmates at school. Providing them with a different means of raising funds will put money in their pockets and enhance their entrepreneurial goals.” They constantly checked the progress of the printer creating the coin. Additionally, they were blown away at the process and precision of it. The final product came out great! There was a little time for the Rhinos to go outside and play with each other, doing what young men do. We loved to see that because they are building friendships that we hope will last a lifetime!
Next, it was decided to print a coin because they wanted to be able to have a completed project before the session was over. Preparing the printer to print the coin was a great way for the Rhinos to have hands-on experience with it. First, they decided on the design of the coin and converted it into a format the printer could read. The next step was to have the printer bed leveled correctly and preheated. They checked the nozzle, and the spool of filament to ensure Page 47
THE CAR MAINTENANCE 101 SESSION: EMPOWERING DC RHINOS
O
n September 30, 2023, the Brothers of Kappa Psi, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosted a remarkable “Car Maintenance 101” session as part of their monthly enrichment programs for their DC Rhinos Mentoring group. This event, held from 10 am to 1 pm, marked the beginning of an exciting mentoring year.
This event served as a valuable learning opportunity for the Rhinos, equipping them with essential life skills that extend beyond the classroom. It was evident that the chapter brothers, including Brother Errol Williams and Brother Glen Yonkers, Jr., were committed to nurturing and empowering the next generation.
Brother Jamaal Waith took the lead, setting the tone for the day with a friendly round of introductions where each Rhino shared their name, school, and hobbies. Brother Derrick Thornton then initiated a fun activity by creating a playlist based on everyone’s favorite songs, sparking lively debates about musical preferences. Brother Waith continued to educate and engage the audience with a video titled “10 Things Every Driver Should Know.” The video covered essential topics, from using a dipstick to check oil levels to inspecting the cooling system for sufficient fluid. The highlight of the day came when Brothers Kevin Poplar and Brian Haley brought their vehicles, allowing Rhinos to actively participate in changing the oil and an air filter – a hands-on lesson that will serve them well in the future.
Page 48
As the session concluded, the hope was to see these young men capable of assisting their loved ones in difficult situations and preventing automotive mishaps through their newfound knowledge. The “Car Maintenance 101” session was a testament to Kappa Psi’s dedication to mentoring and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

n Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Taylor Bend Family YMCA in Chesapeake, Virginia, The Golded Fold mentees, mentors, and Brothers from Alpha Iota Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., learned and played the wonderful game of Chess. Chess is a game for two players that originated in the 6th century and gradually evolved into the form that is played today. It remains one of the world’s most popular games. In this training session, the Golden Fold mentees were given a general introduction to chess. The instructions include a basic understanding of the various chess pieces – moving, the
advantages, disadvantages, and importance of each chess. According to Brother Rick Green, the goal of chess is to trap the enemy king so that it cannot avoid being captured. If an enemy piece could capture the king in the next move, this is either “check” or “checkmate.” Brother Keith Wilson mentioned by playing chess, the mentees can improve and develop cognitive skills, including memory, logical thinking, critical thinking, concentration, problem-solving, and visual processing. It also helps them develop life skills such as creativity, verbal communication, reading comprehension, self-discipline, selfconfidence, and sportsmanship. The Golden Fold mentees had a great time and look forward to the next event.

UPSILON NU CHAPTER KICKS OFF 2023 SCHOOL YEAR WITH UPLIFT AND SUPPORT IN RICHMOND, VA
A
s the summer days begin to wane and the first school bells of the year ring out, the Brothers of Upsilon Nu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., have once again demonstrated their commitment to their community by providing muchneeded support and encouragement to elementary and middle school students in the Richmond, VA area. On August 18, 2023, Upsilon Nu took its first step in this noble mission by donating 51 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in need at Arthur Ash Jr. Elementary School. These thoughtful donations not only alleviate some of the financial burdens families face but also empower these young learners with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. Three days later, on August 21, 2023, the Brothers of Upsilon Nu were at Bensley Elementary School to welcome students on their first day of school with warm smiles,
fist bumps, and words of encouragement. The presence of these positive role models can make all the difference in a child’s day, fostering a sense of belonging and motivation to excel. In addition to their uplifting presence, Upsilon Nu also handed out more school supplies, ensuring that no child begins the school year unprepared. Continuing their mission, on August 22, 2023, the Brothers of Upsilon Nu spread their message of encouragement to Falling Creek Middle School in Chesterfield County. Middle school can be a challenging time for students, and the support of mentors and community leaders can be a guiding light during this crucial transitional phase. The efforts of Upsilon Nu did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. School administrators and teachers expressed their gratitude for the generous supplies and the uplifting presence of the fraternity members. Their support is not just about giving tangible resources but also nurturing the spirit of these young scholars. The Brothers of Upsilon Nu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of students in the Richmond, VA area. schools and students does not stop with these back-to-school initiatives. As the school year progresses, Upsilon Nu will continue to seek ways to bolster Richmond area schools and nurture the potential of the next generation. Through their actions, they hope to launch these young students into their best school year yet, providing them with the tools and inspiration needed to reach for the stars.

DONATES MORE THAN 150 BACKPACKS AND CASH TO LOUDOUN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
O
n August 26, 2023, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., donated and delivered to Loudoun County Public Schools more than 150 backpacks filled with bags of much-needed school supplies; this year’s recipients were Leesburg, Sugarland, and Frederick Douglass Elementary Schools. In addition, the chapter made a $500.00 cash donation to Leesburg Elementary. Every year, some parents struggle to purchase essential school supplies for their children. As a result, children may begin the school year without enough school supplies, often leaving them at a disadvantage and teachers to fill in the gap. A 2021 National Center for Education Statistics survey of U.S. teachers found that 94% of public-school teachers paid for school supplies with their own funds. According to a survey by the nonprofit organization Adoptaclassroom.org, teachers spent an average of
Page 68
$750 of their own money to purchase supplies for their classrooms during the 2020-21 school year. By donating backpacks, school supplies, and cash to schools, Sigma Mu Mu helps lighten the financial burden on parents and teachers while providing students with items they need to be productive in the classroom at the beginning of the school year, thereby eliminating potential disadvantages.

SIGMA MU MU QUES COMPLETE IRONMAN TRIATHLON HONORING BROTHER MONTAQUE -
n September 24, 2023, current and former Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu (SMM) Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., (Omega Psi Phi) completed the grueling 144.6-mile Ironman Chattanooga triathlon in Chattanooga, TN. The” Sigma Mu Mu Ques” relay team that competed in the event included Brother Trevor Browne, who, in the first leg of the race, swam 2.4 miles in the Tennessee River; Brother Derrick Clarke, who cycled the 116-mile bike course - zigzagging through the rolling hills of Tennessee and Georgia; and Brother Colonel Johari Hemphill, now with Gamma Upsilon Chapter, who ran the hilly 26.2-mile marathon and brought the team across the finish line. They participated in the triathlon as part of Sigma Mu Mu’s Health Initiatives program and in honor of Brother Colonel Eugene Montague (Omega Chapter), who tragically died during the swim of the 2016 Ironman Chattanooga 70.3 triathlon. Brother Browne conceived and proposed the novel idea of an Ironman relay team of Ques after finishing the Ironman Maryland 140.6 himself and two 200-mile Ragnar Relay races with an all-Omega team. He discovered that Ironman Chattanooga allowed relay teams and thought it would be the ideal venue for an all-Ques Ironman team to honor Brother Montague’s memory. Brother Browne broached the idea to other SMM athletes. Brothers Clarke and Hemphill enthusiastically answered the call, knowing Ironman Chattanooga has some of the most
Page 80
difficult cycling and running courses in the entire Ironman circuit. For almost a year, the threesome committed to training hard to prepare for the race, which would undoubtedly challenge their resolve and determination. “It was an opportunity to accomplish something many won’t even attempt and continue to build camaraderie with like-minded Brothers,” said Brother Hemphill. Brother Clarke viewed the opportunity as “a chance to get out of my comfort zone and accomplish a goal which shows that I can do anything I set my mind to do, and potentially be a bright shining light of inspiration for someone else like Gene Montague did.” Race week came, and the Sigma Mu Mu team traveled to Chattanooga to execute what it had trained for long and hard. Brother Montague’s wife’s kind words of appreciation and well wishes provided extra motivation for the team: “I am very grateful and honored in how [the Omegas] are keeping Gene’s memory alive. Please let your frat brothers know I salute them and pray for their safe and successful finish. God bless you all.” Brother Browne recalls being so anxious about the race and its significance that he didn’t sleep much the night before. Nevertheless, at 7:30 AM on race day, after listening to the national anthem, he and 1,500 other triathletes plunged into the Tennessee River to begin the swim. Brother Browne commented, “I was exhausted, somewhat frazzled, and the water was cold and turbulent, but I persevered and kept swimming –one stroke at a time.” To his surprise, Brother Browne completed the 2.4-mile swim in
less than an hour. “I had a personal record swim, but more importantly, I honored Gene and created an amazing memory with great Brothers.”
Similarly, Brothers Clarke and Hemphill overcame stomach and leg cramps, respectively, to complete their segments of the 144.6-mile event. Team Sigma Mu Mu Ques was proud to finish the race in Brother Montague’s honor and display his picture at the Ironman Village. The team also answered questions from the local media and other triathletes about Brother Montague and its mission. In 2015, SMM’s “FOH & See It Through” team ran into the athletic Brother Montague and his family while competing at the Tougher Mudder competition in Doswell, VA. Affectionately called “Gene,” he was only known then by a couple of the SMM team members via his home district and military service. Nevertheless, Gene had everyone laughing uncontrollably – joking about his “bionic” leg braces, his sibling, and the SMM Brothers – as they persevered through the 13-mile obstacle course and hot conditions. By race end, Gene and his family were embedded into the SMM team, and he made even the newly acquainted Brothers feel like old friends. Notably, Brothers Clarke and Browne were among the SMM Brothers who fellowshipped with Gene that day, making this year’s event extra special and meaningful to them. Gene was full of life: witty, humorous, warm, enthusiastic, energetic, generous, kind and encouraging. “I just love
the Bruhs!” Gene would say that day, “Omega Psi Phi is the greatest frat in the world!” Gene’s chapter at the time of his death, Pi Lambda Lambda of Prince William County, VA, has held an annual Gene Montague Memorial 5K race in his honor. SMM, located in Loudoun County, VA, and chartered during Omega Psi Phi’s centennial year, has always made its Health Initiatives program and fitness a significant part of the chapter’s DNA. The Brothers regularly engage in group activities such as cycling, running, walking, swimming, and other fitness challenges. The chapter scroll includes Brothers who are triathletes, marathoners, and cyclists and have participated in numerous triathlons, marathons, Ragnar relays, Spartans, and Tougher Mudder races, among other events.

Brother Gravely is a retired high school principal, coach, teacher, and motivator. His QUE School program at Martinsville Middle School sets the chapter’s standard in the execution of the curriculum throughout the school year due to the experience of Brother Gravely.

BLOOD DRIVE & COMMUNITY HEALTH Blood is used every day of the year to treat patients for various medical conditions and research programs like cancer and sickle cells.
F
redericksburg, VA – The Brothers of the Tau Rho Chapter, Third District, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., conducted a Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive & Community Health Event, a traditional activity under the fraternity umbrella of the Health Initiatives, at the Spotsylvania Towne Center in Fredericksburg, VA. The event was organized by chairman Brother Brian Joseph (Tau Rho, 2022) in partnership with INOVA Blood Drive Services and the Virginia Department of Health. The Red Cross estimates that someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. One pint of blood can save as many as three lives, and donated blood is never wasted.
Brother Dr. Charles Drew (June 3, 1904 – April 1, 1950), an American physician/surgeon, medical researcher, and member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, was a pioneer in the field of blood transfusion and ways to process and store blood plasma in banks. The purpose of the Tau Rho Chapter’s Blood Drive was to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation. Blood cannot be manufactured; it can only come from generous donors. There were 13 health stations set up; 106 total patrons visited the stations, 47 signed up to give blood, and 25 donated. Five patrons were unable to donate for different reasons and concerns. The blood drive was so successful that 17 patrons were turned away for lack of resources and time allotted for the Blood Mobile. After the event, the Tau Rho chapter brothers engaged in conversations about how to best foster community collaboration, enhance data equity, and develop policies and systems to make the Rappahannock area healthier. Brothers Norman Carter and Kevin Roach cochaired the event.

TAU RHO CHAPTER HIGHWAY
F
redericksburg, VA – On Saturday, July 29, 2023, the Tau Rho Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. members met to perform their quarterly AdoptA-Highway event. Over the past few years, the Tau Rho chapter has cooperated with the city of Fredericksburg, VA, community to help clean up litter on local highways. The chapter was assigned 2403 Airport Ave Fredericksburg, VA 22401. The Virginia Department of Transportation established the Adopt-aHighway program in 1988, and each year, nearly 18,000 Adopt-a-Highway volunteers collect more than 25,000 bags of waste along Virginia’s highways. Tau Rho Highway Cleanup Chairman Brother Michael Pullum (Tau Rho, 2020) and his committee organized the cleanup event. The cleanup was extensive, as 20 members of the Tau Rho Chapter volunteered to come out and support this important initiative. The brothers of Tau Rho collected 10 bags of trash and debris. Research has shown that Adopt-aHighway roadsides are less littered than those maintained by road crews and lead to life-long environmental awareness. Even as COVID-19 restrictions and guidance lessen in the Greater Fredericksburg region, Tau Rho chapter brothers continued practicing health and safety protocols as they participate in the cleanups. Page 86
The chapter will continue to uplift and support this important community initiative and strive to have a lasting and positive impact on our community.

SOULS TO THE POLLS
H
ampton, VA - On October 22, 2023, Zeta Omicron and Gamma Epsilon Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., both participated in the 3rd annual Super Sunday “Souls to the Polls” which was sponsored by the Hampton Branch of the NAACP. The purpose of the event was to reiterate the importance of voting and ensuring voting stations open on Sunday as an option during election cycles. This is partly due to many electoral boards around the state of Virginia disagreeing with early voting opportunities, which impacts people of

color in the process. The gathering of support exceeded 100 citizens, including Hampton University students. They all gathered and marched in unison from the First Baptist Church to the Voter Registrar’s building located in downtown Hampton. The event was an excellent opportunity for the men of Omega to showcase their shared wisdom and ideas to the community at large. With their effort, they combined strength and built bridges for the betterment of Omega.

DELTA OMEGA
“THE MAN BOX”
n September 30th, 2023, the brothers of Delta Omega Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., continued to demonstrate the meaning of scholarship while conducting a phenomenally successful mentorship seminar. The proteges gathered at the Delta Omega Foundation, Incorporated’s Center of Excellence (DCoE) in Petersburg, Virginia, for a series of motivational videos on “The Man Box” from three motivational speakers who specialize in providing insight on what factors influence a man’s developmental process and the challenges men face in life. The proteges were asked to provide one takeaway (Thought) from each presentation. The takeaways were consolidated and will be expanded on throughout the TMPP year. The goal is to highlight the personal growth of each protégé as they continue their journey
towards manhood. The next portion of the session was dedicated to the continued focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This “Make Things Go” session encouraged the proteges to create and draw coding using programmable robots. The proteges were able to download “SPHERO EDU,” which is an application that allows users to code robots to create an educational tool that transforms the way teens learn, create, and invent through coding, science, engineering, and the arts.” The proteges and brothers were thoroughly immersed and engaged as the session allowed all participants to reflect on what they gained in knowledge and the application of STEM. The proteges were very enthusiastic and look forward to the next TMPP session challenge.
QUALITY TIME WITH THE VETERANS AT THE SITTER AND BARFOOT VETERAN’S HOME
O
n Saturday, June 24, 2023, the brothers of Delta Omega, along with members of the Delta Omega Male Protégé Program, visited the Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond, Virginia. Many of the brothers of the Delta Omega chapter are former members of the military. Therefore, an awesome bond is shared with these courageous women and men. This visit allowed the brothers to spend precious time with their fellow veterans who are now considered disabled due to their military service. The Delta Omega brothers immediately began the process of fellowshipping
Page 89
with these heroes. They thanked them for their service and the sacrifices they made to support our great nation. Veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines all participated in this gathering, sharing combat stories ranging from the Korean War to the contingencies in the Middle East. The Delta Omega brothers really had a great time serving as facilitators for the favorite past-time event for the Sitter and Barfoot veterans, the “High Stakes Bingo” game. The visit was a tremendous success and culminated with the Delta Omega brothers escorting their fellow veterans back to their rooms, exchanging pleasantries and promises to meet again in the near future.

PSI ALPHA ALPHA
WALT WHITMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL’S FAMILY MARKET SUPPORT
O
n October 11, 2023, the Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter again provided volunteers at the Walt Whitman Middle School’s (WWMS) Monthly Family Market. This is the chapter’s third year and first month supporting this important food insecurity distribution program in Fairfax County, Virginia. This Capital Area Food Bank distribution program allows the customers to select from over 20 items such as fruit, vegetables, canned goods, etc., set up like a supermarket aisle. Approximately 158 family members were supported by the market this month. The project is a huge logistical effort on the front end to have all the food removed from food bank pallets, unpacked, sorted, and placed on tables so the customers can simply walk by and select the food items they desire. Our contribution was to assist the volunteer
students, teachers, and other organizations with safety, setup, supervision, and customer flow. We were able to provide six veteran volunteers this month: Brothers Philip Benjamin, Bradford Caldwell, Maurice Cogdell, Benzell Floyd, Myron McDaniels, and Kenneth Younger. The school’s Volunteer Coordinator, Community Coordinator, and especially the families appreciated our committee’s efforts. It’s very moving to experience the gratitude of so many as they come through to select their food items. We are off to a great start this school year and look forward to supporting this program again on November 8, 2023.
