Dear Brothers, Family, and Friends of the Third District,
I
t is with extreme enthusiasm I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to serve as the District Representative for this premier district in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. The district continues to grow and exercise the Fraternity’s cardinal principles (Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift). I am excited to say we are represented by 43 chapters and 2100 Brothers living their creed and unselfishly providing support to our communities. Being “The Birthplace of Omega” and working together as noble Omega Men, we continue to strive and persevere through the challenges presented by the COVID-19 virus. We continue to make the difficult look easy, as demonstrated by our efforts and ingenuity to ensure we are continuing to meet the needs of the fraternity and community. Our use of innovation and technology is unmatched, as exhibited by our recordsetting increased attendance at our events. Our 88th Annual District meeting was a huge success. We celebrated and honored our chapters, brothers, youth, and citizens for their outstanding service to the fraternity and humanity.
Brothers, our district and chapters continue to be recognized on the Fraternity’s international level for our unwavering leadership and excellent service. We recorded the largest donation for St Jude, both district and chapter in the fraternity. Congratulations to all awardees, as you are truly deserving of all your accolades. We pray for your continued success, health, and strength as you continue to make sacrifices to provide ongoing unselfish service. May God continue to bless you, your families, the Third District, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Our prayer is for all to be comforted, remain safe and healthy. The COVID virus may have impacted us all in one way or another. Please continue to be safe, especially with the onset of the new COVID Variants on the rise. Fraternally,

88th ANNUAL THIRD DISTRICT
MEETING F
redericksburg, VA – The Brothers of the Tau Rho Chapter, Third District, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosted the 88th Annual Third District Meeting on May 21-23, 2021. The decision to conduct the meeting virtually was based on the decision from Brother Conrado B. Morgan, District Representative and guidance from Brother Dr. David Marion, 41st Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Center for Disease Control (CDC) to stay safe.
This year’s District Marshal was Brother Terry Lee, Gamma Epsilon 84, the Immediate Past Basileus of Tau Rho, and his Deputy District Marshalls. Brother Lyndon Roane, Brother Purcell Clark, Brother Pittman Rock, and other selected committee members from Tau Rho Chapter orchestrated a flawless District Meeting as the meeting went off without a hitch. Over 700 Brothers registered, which was the largest number of brothers ever recorded for any other Third District Meeting.

Brother Cornelius Beidleman, the Third District Automation chairman, did a superb job related to automation and planning, with assistance from Brother Tracy D. Whitehurst of Tau Rho. Both worked long and hard hours to complete the Souvenir Journal to perfection. The 88th Annual Third District meeting was an overwhelming success, and the business of Omega was conducted with excellence. The Talent Hunt was conducted on Friday, May 21, 2021. The event was pre-recorded and executed by Brother William Prentiss, Third District Talent Hunt Chairman. The Talent Hunt was an exceptional event by all Third District standards. INITIATIVES
T
he Third District hosted their 1st Annual Father’s Day Celebration Event on June 15, 2021, as part of the week-long initiative by the IHQ Fatherhood Initiatives and Mentoring Committee (FIMC). The 1 hour and 30-minute event included over 40 short videos from Brothers in 21 different chapters throughout the Third District speaking on the importance of fatherhood, the meaning of fatherhood, and the necessity of supporting, promoting, and growing strong fathers. The Third District FIMC spotlighted Brother. Johnnie Underwood of Zeta Mu Mu Chapter of Williamsburg, Virginia. Brother Underwood discussed his father’s role in his life from being adopted and given the love of a father, which he has passed on to his two daughters. His remarkable story was featured on the June 20, 2021 IHQ Father’s Day Program & Celebration.

County Department of Family Services to execute another successful facilitation of the County’s Dad’s Parenting Program in the Spring of 2021. From February to April of 2021, the Brothers of PsiAA provided direction and insight on what it means to be a man and a father. Additionally, they expounded on their varied experiences as fathers. In total, ten fathers graduated from the 13-session virtual program. To supplement the financial burden caused by the pandemic, PsiAA donated gift cards totaling $500 to the participating fathers to provide support for some basic necessities such as food, gas, infant care, or anything else they may need in support of their families. The Dad’s Parenting program serves to enhance fathers’ overall parenting and fathering skills. Also, the Dad’s Parenting program promotes and celebrates the importance of fathers in Fairfax County. The Chapter’s involvement has helped increase Fairfax County DFS’ capacity to meet the needs of fathers in Fairfax County, as well as educate fathers about the critical roles they play in the lives of their children.

KNOW YOUR GENETIC
HEALTH HISTORY
T
he primary area of focus was to educate about the importance of knowing one’s family health history. Knowing one’s health history is critical. If someone is armed with that knowledge, you can proactively take action to better your own health. Unfortunately, awareness of family health histories in the African American community lags behind that of other groups, and there is much work to be done to improve this.
The Objectives Accomplishments:
It is estimated that there are more than 7,000 rare diseases, so why focus on hATTR amyloidosis?
•
Approximately four percent of African Americans carry a specific TTR gene mutation called Val122Ile,1 that puts them at increased risk for developing the disease. Since there are more than 40 million African Americans in this country, the number of people who may have the Val122Ile gene mutation is significant. Sharing our knowledge related to the importance of health education could improve health disparities. The men of Omega are excited to be Embarking on this partnership together to educate at-risk communities about hereditary ATTR (hATTR) amyloidosis – a rare, inherited, progressively debilitating, and often fatal disease that disproportionally impacts African Americans. For more info, please visit
https://blackhealthmatters.com Through the efforts of the Brothers of the Third District, there were over 160 Brothers/family members/ friends registered, with approximately 90 people attending.

T
he Brothers of Alpha Omega and Alpha Chapters, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in collaboration with other Brothers of the Third District – led by Brother Miller (District Chaplain), welcomed the visiting Brothers of Rho Alpha Chapter (Seventh District) along with the members of the Mobile Omega Lamplighters, who embarked on an excursion that could only be described as EPIC. Their journey began when a group of approximately 120 individuals – fraternity members of Rho Alpha Chapter, nearly 60 mentees, and “Da Village” (a contingent of family and friends) - departed Mobile, Alabama, on the night of July 4th. The purpose of this trek was an “all in” effort to expose the young men to educational opportunities at HBCU campuses on our way to visit the nation’s capital of Washington D.C. Their monumental voyage was facilitated along the way by members of the Fraternity, other College Dignitaries, and officials who were eager to show these young men the rich heritage associated with some of this nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The Lamplighters were exposed to a few HBCUs before arriving at the Nation’s Capital.
Page 24
A couple of visits included North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and Morgan State University. They arrived in the Nation’s Capital via bus and were provided with an initial guided bus tour – led by Brother Rohulamin Quander (Alpha Chapter ’64). Brother Quander is a licensed and certified District of Columbia tour guide. The Lamplighters were able to view sites such as the U.S. Capitol, Black Lives Matter Boulevard, Martin L. King, Jr Memorial, Benjamin Banneker Circle, historic U street, Lincoln Memorial, and other notable locations. Due to COVID, several sites were closed to the public. However, the Brothers persevered and provided a walking guided tour on Thursday, July 8, 2021 – led by Brother Quander. Brother Steve Johnson provided the Lamplighters with fair cards for them to travel via the metro. The Lamplighters had a fun day filled with learning about Washington DC’s rich history and visiting several historic and notable locations: Black Lives Matter Plaza, Frederick Douglas Church – Metropolitan AME on M street, St John’s Episcopal Church – Church of the Presidents, Lafayette square to
see White House, and the World War 1 Memorial – symbolizes the African American contributions, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and services in various wars. Brother Quander provided a detailed, powerful, and inspiring description of these locations’ vast and deep historical accounts. He also encouraged them on the importance of lifting as they climb and how the cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift are critical to everyday life. On Friday, July 9, 2021, the lamplighters were provided with a guided tour of the historic Howard University by Brother Colin Dickens (Alpha Chapter Basileus) and several other Brothers. Some of the prominent sites toured consisted of the President’s House (where classes were first held in 1868), Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, Thirkield Hall (where the fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911), and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Founder’s Monument. Other sites included the Dial – dedicated to Benjamin Banneker and the honorable Brother Ernest E. Just Science building. Brother Dickens informed the Lamplighters that they would need to remain focused and diligent to attain academic success at Howard University and membership
in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. The entire group proceeded to the fraternity house for lunch and fellowship. They were provided with words of encouragement by Brother Conrado B. Morgan – Third District Representative. The Lamplighters presented Brother Dalton – Basileus Alpha Omega with a gift of appreciation. The Brothers appreciate the opportunity to share our rich history with the Lamplighters. All had a great time. The Brothers continue to stand ready to serve in any capacity to encourage and uplift our youth.

OMEGA MEN FOR HOMELESS MEN

And Father McKenna Center-Men Recovering from Homelessness
O
n July 3, 2021, the Brothers of Alpha Omega Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., partnered with the Father McKenna Center to celebrate the homeless men who completed the program called “The Better Life Pyramid.” This program helps homeless men with a myriad of issues and provides them with assistance in becoming productive citizens. On this occasion, the Omega Men who participated in the “Omega Men for Homeless Men” program wanted to acknowledge the men with food and fellowship for their achievements. The Brothers of the Alpha Omega Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. began the “Omega Men for Homeless Men” (OM4HM) program in the fall of 2010. The program’s focus is to bring support and awareness to the plight of homeless men in the Washington, D.C. area. The program supports the efforts of the Father McKenna Center located in the basement of the Saint Aloysius Catholic Church at 19 I St., N.W. Washington, D.C. The McKenna Center exists to meet the needs of the poor and homeless who reside in one of Washington’s most impoverished neighborhoods while in the shadow of the United States Capitol Building. The McKenna Center continues the legacy of Father Horace B. McKenna SJ, a Jesuit priest who devoted his life and priesthood to the betterment of the poor. The Men of Omega provide support to and with the McKenna Center on two levels. First, on the “First Monday” of each month, Omega Men converge on the McKenna Center to provide a theme and to lead the Center’s “discussion session” with the men. The discussion session lasts for about an hour and is a way to address some of the root issues that have these men in their current situations. The Brothers provide the men with real-life tools, both inspirational and practical. Some of these tools consist of but not limited to – learning how to set up email addresses,
getting identification, obtaining needed services such as bringing in key members of Washington, DC’s housing authority, and providing access to various Washington, DC agencies for potential work opportunities. These are tools key to helping these men move forward toward getting out of homelessness. Participation in these discussion sessions is a requirement for the men to receive a hot lunch. This first session was held on Monday, October 4, 2010, and along with the Men of Omega, there were about 50 men who participated in the discussion session and had lunch that day. For the past eleven years, the Omega Men for Homeless Men program has seen roughly 50-70 men participate in these First Monday sessions. Second, the Men of Omega gather with the men on Sundays at 1pm to watch the Washington Football Team’s home games and to provide a hot lunch for the men. In terms of the hot lunch, Omega Men has partnered with a variety of great sponsors, such as churches, businesses, and individuals, to provide hot lunches. These games are laid-back opportunities to get to know the men on a different level. The numbers have averaged between 70-90 men for these events. On average, there are about 80 men at these games. There are about 10 games per season with a 1:00pm start time. The Omega Men for Homeless Men program has fellowshipped with and fed over 5,600 men over the course of the past seven years. Lastly, the Omega Men for Homeless program has had a great and successful relationship with the Father McKenna Center over the years. The change in the lives of the men and the impact on the community validates the program is making a difference. It is the desire of Brothers leading the OM4HM program that it will be replicated across the country. This sentiment is in the spirit of Omega’s commitment to Service! Page 27

BATESTOWN ROAD HISTORIC RENAMING JUNETEENTH 2021
P
i Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the Social Action Committee partnered with friends, family, and local volunteers in the Batestown community renaming of Mine Road to Batestown Road in Dumfries, VA during this Juneteenth Celebration weekend. Batestown, named for early settlers and freed slave Sally Bates, was one of a small number of African American societies in the United States that thrived with black businesses and prosperous community living with more than 550 residents. After WWII, landowners were forced out by new local governments that claimed eminent domain and changed the name of the area to bury the development of this black progression.
On June 19, 2021, community leaders, historians, citizens of Dumfries, and brothers of PLL joined in a celebration to officially rename Mine Rd. to Batestown Rd. In a fitting ceremony, Prince William County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair, Andrea Bailey, wife of Brother Cozy Bailey (President of Prince William County NAACP), acknowledge the long road to get to this day and commended all the laborers involved. She presented
PLL’s own, Brother George M. Hampton, with an award of appreciation and recognition for his efforts to spearhead and solidify Juneteenth celebrations within Prince William County (PWC). The Brothers of PLL continue to be thoroughly involved in energies to preserve and maintain the history and dignity of this once overshadowed community to seeing it once again restored to the light of historic relevance.

i Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., on Friday, July 23, 2021, participated in a SOLD-OUT golf tournament sponsorship fundraising event entitled “Decades Sponsor” hosted by the George M. Hampton Foundation (GMHF) at the Forest Green Golf Course in Triangle, Virginia. Despite this year’s event being sold out well in advance, donations continued in support of achieving the Foundation’s mission to make a difference in the lives of youths while promoting growth and development in the Prince William County community. Through diverse partnerships, GMHF can support local community youth events, higher education scholarship programs, provisions to those of disadvantaged backgrounds, and mentoring through the Leadership Outreach Program (Omega U) onsite at each educational level of the local community schools. While the day was full of fraternization, fellowship, and fun, a round of applause is due to the corporate and community leaders, distinguished civilians, public donors, Divine Nine, PLL Chapter, the GMHF committee members, and the 120 golfers who helped exceed $20,000 in funding to benefit the youth and provide them with an opportunity to experience a better tomorrow.

Accompanied by Northern Area II Supervisor Brother Earl Smith Jr., Vice Basileus Brother Sekou Owens and KRS Brother Shaun Marzett, the brothers of OKK congregated at the upper most corner of Sunrise Valley Drive for their quarterly Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup event along a 1.5 mile stretch of Reston Parkway in Reston, Virginia. As the morning rain came to a halt, the brothers garnered their vests, trash bags, gloves, PPE and hit the streets to begin the cleanup with matching t-shirts that prominently displayed a gold diamond encapsulating the Greek letters of their Fraternity, chapter on the front, and a perfectly fitting quote for the times at hand by Malcolm X that read “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”. Afterwards the brothers continued the fellowship at the Bungalow Lakehouse in Sterling, Virginia where they thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company as they celebrated another successful community service event.

arlier this year, the Basileus of Omicron Kappa Kappa Chapter (OKK), Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc (Kimmel Daniel), has approved a new initiative within the Reclamation and Retention Committee that is titled “OKK Visits the Bruhz”. The objective of this initiative is to schedule dates to visit the Senior members of the Chapter that are no longer mobile or is experiencing sickness. The first of many visits began in July with two visits to Brother Steve Lewis (Omicron Pi - 84). He is currently recuperating at the Burke Rehabilitation Center in Fairfax County, Virginia. Brother Lewis loves visits from the Brothers. He was especially ecstatic about the outpouring of love and Uplift from the Chapter. Members came out in droves to see him. On the second visit, the Brothers came together at the gazebo of the facility and covered him in prayer and positive energy during a phone call from his wife. Two of the Chapter’s Charter members joked about eating his donut. Brother Lewis responded with full heartfelt laughter and said he would be there shortly to retrieve his sugary treat. The Basileus was impressed by the outpouring and number of Brothers who showed up to support Brother Lewis. He stated that this cannot be a one-time event. The Chapter looks forward to putting their best foot forward to show up and support all sick, shut-in, and distressed Brothers of the Fraternity.

he Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated instituted the weekly Third District Worship & Prayer services on Sunday nights at 1911, starting in April 2020. Initially, the prayer services were designed as a prayer service for COVID-19 pandemic relief. The prayer service mission developed into opportunities for fellowship and celebration across the District and beyond. Over the past year, the Third District Worship and Prayer service has combined powerful words of uplift, great music, fervent prayers, and fellowship in True Omega fashion. This event is open to Brothers of Omega, family, and friends alike. We have enjoyed special services that celebrated Omega Legacy on Father’s Day, Service Members on Veterans Day, and couples married for more than 50 years on Valentine’s Day, with two of our celebrants sharing 68 year partnerships. We have showcased the future leadership of the Fraternity, and nation, with student led services commemorating HBCU Homecoming, College Graduation, and Mother’s Day. Both local, regional, and national representatives of the National Pan-Hellenic Council have participated along with every member of our Supreme Council. The Third District Worship & Prayer Service facilitated by Third District Chaplain Rev. Courtenay L. Miller, under the leadership of District Representative Brother Conrado B. Morgan. This service has provided a forum for uplift in an uncertain and unsteady time. while also providing a vehicle for reconnection and connection to participants across the county and indeed around the globe. The Third District acknowledges the contributions of the many worship leaders, musicians, and the automation team for their contribution to this great worship and friendship experience.
NEWS FOR UNDERGRADUATE
CHAPTERS Greetings Brothers of the Third District,
I
greet you in the name of the Supreme Basileus of the Universe. I am honored to serve as the Second Vice District Representative for the mighty Third District. I continue to press towards the goals of my Four Pillar Platform. Since the Third District Meeting, every undergraduate chapter has a representative on the Fatherhood Initiative and Mentoring Committee. This past May, we had 24 Brothers graduate. We encourage all brothers to become active in their local graduate chapters, in coordination with Brother District Representative Conrado Morgan’s vision for the 3rd District. I have started ongoing communications with each active undergraduate chapter. This effort is to assess individual needs, coordinate with assigned graduate chapters, chapter advisors, and district committee chairmen to ensure that the undergraduate chapters will complete the mandated programs. I am enthusiastic about the upcoming fall semester for the undergraduates of the Third District. A few notable
Page 38
DANIEL X. DUNN reasons for my increased enthusiasm are: First, Gamma Epsilon (Hampton University) was recognized as the largest undergraduate chapter in both the Third District and Fraternity. Second, the return of the Eta Lambda chapter (Virginia Tech University). The District Representative and Western Area Supervisor worked diligently to return Omega to its campus. Third, the Nu Psi Chapter (Virginia State University) at the District meeting was recognized for having the Undergraduate Omega Man of the Year and the Third District Scholar of the Year. Under the District Representative’s leadership, the undergraduates accepted the challenge to raise money for the St. Jude hospital. I would like to recognize the Phi Delta chapter (Virginia Commonwealth University), specifically for tripling their funding goal for the St. Jude’s fundraising campaign. Based on this performance, I am excited to see what the undergraduates will achieve in the fall. Even in
the midst of the challenges related to the pandemic, the undergraduates of the Third District have experienced immense success. Additionally, we are looking to carry on this momentum into the upcoming Fall semester. May God continue to bless you and yours and the undergraduates of the Third District. I remain grateful to serve the Third District as the Second Vice District Representative. Fraternally,
Daniel Dunn Second Vice District Representative

STRIVES TO HELP ONE MILLION Black Men Become Better Fathers & Mentors With The Launch Of Fatherhood Resource Center (FRC)
A
lexandria, VA - The Brothers of the Psi Nu Chapter, Third District, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. launched a virtual Fatherhood Resource Center (FRC) during June 2021, with a goal of supporting one million Black men and men of color be and become better fathers, father figures and mentors. The FRC was launched as a part of Psi Nu Chapter’s Fathers and Mentors Experience (FME), a month-long celebration of fathers, father figures, and mentors internationally. Brother James Goodman, III (Psi Nu ‘20), was the originator of the idea of the resource center. Goodman shared, “Life doesn’t come with manuals and neither does fatherhood,” Goodman shared. Additionally, he stated, “Psi Nu Chapter wants to do all we can to uplift fathers and mentors and serve as the premier source of supportive content for them. Now, I’m even more excited to one day become a father myself.” The Fatherhood Resource Center is available and will be a permanent fixture on Psi Nu Chapter’s website, and information will continually be added to increase its impact. Resources such as education on preventing child abuse, navigating critical development years for youth, strengthening the family, selfcare, proper mental health, and where to connect with other fathers can all be found via the FRC. The chapter said the ultimate goal is
Page 44
to help brothers from all walks of life continue growing and providing leadership in their families and communities. Brother Edward Hull (Psi Nu ‘17), chapter webmaster, who led the web creation of the FRC, said that although the FRC will be an ever-changing process, the Brothers of Psi Nu Chapter are up for the challenge. He shared, “The FRC is definitely something near and dear to a lot of the Brothers in the Chapter, Fathers new and old. The FRC will serve as a huge benefit to not only ourselves, but to our community as a whole.” He added, “We are looking to be a beacon of light when it comes to addressing Fatherhood in today’s world, and the FRC will be a major part of those efforts.” Brothers Garrett James and Anthony Sutton were also influential in supporting the creation of the Fatherhood Resource Center. NEWEST FATHER, BROTHER TRAVAUGN LINCOLN
A
Pens Touching Letter Of Uplift To Young Son in Celebration of Father’s Day
lexandria, VA Psi Nu Chapter, Third District, of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.’s newest first-time father, Brother TraVaughn Lincoln (‘17), celebrated Father’s Day by penning a heart-felt letter of hope, guidance and vision to his infant son. His letter was a part of Psi Nu Chapter’s Fathers and Mentors Experience, where the entire month of June 2021 is dedicated to uplifting, encouraging and equipping fathers, father figures and mentors with the resources necessary to be successful. Dear Reign - my beloved son, As I sit and reflect on the short period of time that you’ve been here, I can’t help but to smile. You are truly my greatest blessing and I thank God daily that He saw fit to allow me to be your father; it’s not something that I take lightly. Your grandfather and great-grandfather have set the bar high for what a father should be, and my ultimate goal is to live out that example, so you’ll be prepared for when you become one. While I’m not perfect, you have my promise that everything I do and say will always be with your best interest in mind. When you were born, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know how I was going to handle being a first-time father. It honestly was one of the scariest periods in my life, but you have allowed me to make the necessary mistakes and learn from them. One of the things I love most about you is that you don’t
hold my mistakes against me. One moment you are crying, and the next moment you are giving me that big grin of yours, which lets me know I’m doing something right. You probably don’t realize it but that is the encouragement that I need at times. Every day you are growing and learning new things. I love that you are very curious and want to see everything going on around you; that’s probably something you get from me. I see more and more of myself in you each day - from how stubborn you can be at times to how you genuinely just love people. I hope that as you grow you continue to have a genuine love for people and are able to create and maintain lasting relationships with the people you meet. As a man of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. I have chosen to live my life by our cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. These four words have helped me in my walk-through life and are principles that I expect you to live by even if you don’t choose Omega Psi Phi for yourself. These four words can lead you through life if you wake up every day and intentionally practice them. Manhood - ensuring that the actions you take represent yourself and your family in the best way possible, understanding your responsibilities and making the necessary sacrifices to take care of them. Scholarship - even if you do not Page 45
attend college, always strive to become as knowledgeable as possible. Never stop seeking knowledge or learning. The information that you learn is something that can’t be taken away from you and can be leveraged to further your success. Perseverance - in life, you will undoubtedly face hard times and challenging situations. These are the times when you have to look within yourself and realize that you are on the verge of something great; your work ethic and creativity will pull you through. Always remember that anything worth having, is worth working for. So, get to work son! Uplift - one of my goals in life is to give you all the tools needed to make you successful in life. No matter how successful you are, always walk with gratitude and humility.
I plan to show you. There will be people in life that help you in ways that you can’t repay, so your repayment will be by paying it forward. The words I just described are how I live my life and they are how I expect you to live yours. My greatest hope is that you see me and learn from both my successes and failures, and by doing so, you will save yourself time, resources and many of the unpleasant consequences that I faced. You will make your own set of mistakes but I promise to be there with you every step through the good, the bad and the ugly. I promise to love you unconditionally and to support and guide you through the decisions you make in life.
Son, you have an obligation to lend a helping hand to those in need, and whenever possible, help them elevate in life. This is something that your grandmother instilled in me and this is what
Love,
Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life.

DISCUSS INTERSECTION OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND BLACK MEN AND BOYS
A
lexandria, VA - The Brothers of the Psi Nu Chapter, Third District, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. hosted a virtual session on discussing the intersections of emotional intelligence and Black men and boys. The session held on August 18, 2021 at 7 pm, was Chapter IX (or the ninth interaction) of the Psi Nu’s Your Power Book monthly community discussion series. The event was attended by more than 80 members of the community and raised nearly $200 to support chapter programming. The two panelists were Dr.
Reston Bell, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and Brother Dr. Anthony M. Perdue (Beta Delta Delta ‘89), a leadership development coach and trainer. Additionally, he has a certification in Emotional Intelligence 2.0 (EQ-i 2.0). Dr. Perdue shared emotional intelligence is integral for Black men and boys as they pursue what he calls ‘the three Ms.’ He explained, “Three of the most important decisions men have to make in their lives is concerning their Master (who and what they will serve),
their Mission (identifying and pursuing purpose), and their Mate (the person with whom they will go through life). Dr. Perdue added, “A good understanding of emotional intelligence supports this process.” Dr. Bell encouraged the attendees to immediately utilize the tools from the evening’s discussion in their everyday lives. Additionally, Dr. Bell stated, “In the quest for emotional awareness, I challenge you to take up the practice of stillness. So often, in our busyness and engagement with others, we cannot discern Page 47
our own voices, which makes it hard to know ourselves.” Brother Melvin Stallings (Psi Nu ‘10) facilitated the discussion and brought his years of experience working with youth in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) and life-skills curricula. Brother Stallings said, “Emotional literacy undergirds all of the work I do with youth. When they are grounded the right way, they are then better equipped to understand the challenging concepts in STEAM education and not just learn but thrive and be at the top of their classes.” Brothers James Goodman (Psi Nu ‘20), Garrett James (Tau Lambda Lambda ‘08), Donte’ Jiggetts (Beta Delta Delta ‘10),
Dr. Wayne Moore (Psi Nu ‘06), and Anthony Sutton (Beta Delta Delta ‘17) were also influential in the execution of the August YPB session. The Your Power Book (YPB) series is designed to engage and challenge the local community and beyond on contemporary issues such as popular culture, family life,

rother Dixon’s distinguished career has led to the ABA Journal Board of Editors selecting him as the new Chairman, who will take over after the ABA Annual Meeting in August 2021. Keep in mind this post has not been held by many men of African descent as the organization did not allow a black attorney to be admitted into membership until 1950. Founded in 1915, the ABA Journal is the flagship magazine of the American Bar Association and signature publication for the profession. The ABA Journal is an award-winning, dynamic multimedia platform delivering legal journalism with an independent voice. With its companion website, newsletters, and podcasts, the ABA Journal is delivered in print and electronically to all ABA members, ensuring it has the largest readership of any legal publication in the world. Brother Dixon was educated in the segregated schools of Savannah. He attended Alfred Ely Beach High School where he was a self-described nerd. His favorite subjects in school were science, physics, algebra, and geometry. During his senior year, he applied to Howard University as it was the biggest of the Negro institutions at the time. Given his interest in electrical engineering, and the fact that he was a Georgia resident, Dixon also applied to the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Though he was a Georgia resident and had received the highest SAT score of his high school graduating
HON. BROTHER HERBERT B. DIXON, JR. class in 1964, his race made his acceptance to the predominantly white institution unlikely, and so it was. Georgia Tech did not begin accepting black students without a court order until 1961, and even then, only a few were admitted to the university. Dixon remembers the letter he received from Georgia Tech, in which the school congratulated him on his achievements to date and conveyed that it believed Dixon would be successful in college, just not at their college. Consequently, Dixon matriculated to Howard University in the fall on some partial scholarships with a desire to be an electrical engineer. In his sophomore year greek life came calling and brother Dixon pledged as a member of the Lampados Club for the Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity Incorporated. In his senior year, Dixon set his sights on life after Howard; a life that he intended to share with the former Miss Phoebe Boykins, whom he married that year. Phoebe grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and matriculated to Howard University after high school. Neither of her parents went to college, but they, like Dixon’s parents, instilled the value and importance of education in their five children. Phoebe was an outstanding student and active member of the university community while at Howard. She pledged and eventually became president of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Shortly after graduating from Howard, Mrs. Dixon became a charter member of the sorority’s distinguished Federal City Alumnae Chapter.

in Washington, D.C. She also earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from George Washington University. Mrs. Dixon went on to have a successful career in the telecommunications industry, retiring from Verizon as its Vice President of Sales.

ow with a new wife at his side and in his heart, Brother Dixon initially planned to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering and then apply to graduate school to study for his own MBA degree. After earning an MBA, Dixon thought he would enter corporate America and work as an engineer. His plans would soon change after taking the LSAT on a whim. Brother Dixon made an abrupt decision to apply to law school. Upon graduating law school, passing the BAR, he began a 12-year long career as a defense attorney. Later with the aid of his fraternity brother and mentor the Honorable H. Carl Moultrie, I, he became a judge in the Washington DC Superior Court for 30 years. Men of Omega let us congratulate our dear Brother Herbert B. Dixon Jr., (initiated 66-Alpha Chapter – Howard University, LM #300) a former Basileus of both Alpha Omega Chapter and Alpha Chapter. Current member of Alpha Omega Chapter, a former Third District Graduate Basileus of the Year, and a former International Chair of Omega’s Rules Committee. Brothers continue to strive for excellence and represent men of true Omega caliber!
Make no mistake retention and reclamation is the duty of every Brother and it is going to require some effort from all of you. Did you know that only 1 out of every 5 Brothers pay dues beyond their Initiation fees? Many Brothers claim to love our Fraternity, still participate in social Omega activities, and “represent” Omega through paraphernalia, friendships, etc. yet are not active and financial with their local chapter. Essentially these Brothers are pulling out all of the things that they like about Omega and abandoning the rest. Why not take advantage of your FULL Omega? STEP 1:

GUM SPRINGS COMMUNITY DAY
O
n June 19, 2021, Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. collaborated with the Gum Springs Community Center to sponsor and participate in their annual Community Day at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Alexandria. Due to the pandemic, this was one of the first in-person events at the Community center. For years, the Gum Springs Community Center has served as a primary location for many activities and programs facilitated by Psi Alpha Alpha along the Route 1 corridor in Alexandria, Virginia. The event was spearheaded by Ms. “Queenie” Cox, President of the Gum Springs Community Center’s New
Gum Springs Civic Association. She leaned on the longstanding relationship with the chapter to assist with covering a portion of the costs associated with the event. Without hesitation, Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter eagerly provided the $800.00 needed to pay for the main entertainment – a Steel Drum Band. In addition to the requested funds, the chapter assisted with the setup and execution of many facets of the event. It was a wellattended event providing access to over 20 vendors with kids’ rides, free COVID-19 vaccinations, exhibitions from Fairfax County police and fire departments, and numerous information tents offering various services to the community.
The featured presenter of the day was Ron Chase, founding Director for the Gum Springs Historical Society/Gum Springs Museum. He spoke on how the Gum Springs community played a significant role in the advancement of the Route 1 Corridor. In addition, he gave powerful insight on the history of Juneteenth as a backdrop to the recently signed bill observing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Lastly, the event enabled Brothers and guests to interact with county and state officials such as Fairfax County Supervisor Jeff McKay and Virginia State Delegate Paul Krizek of the 44th District. They were in attendance, lending their support. The Brothers of Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter were not only able to show up in force to support the event but reinforced their commitment and dedication to the success of the Gum Springs Community Center.

The health fair was hosted via Zoom and streamed live via the Psi Alpha Alpha and Omicron Theta Zeta chapters’ Facebook Live platforms. The event was a huge success demonstrated by the 300 plus people reached during and after the event. The service organizations did an outstanding job of providing community residents, families, and friends with valuable information to empower themselves to become more knowledgeable on how to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Ultimately, both chapters prayed everyone found the event uplifting and beneficial related to improving their physical health, mental health, and fitness goals.

FACTS OF COVID-19 AND DELTA VARIANT
n August 25, 2021, the Brothers of the Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., joined with the Fairfax County Health Department and hosted a virtual detailed educational session. The session covered various details surrounding the COVID-19 virus. All were invited to participate in this tremendous event. With the increase in the spread of the COVID delta variant, this event provided the Brothers, community, family, and friends with the facts and dismissed rumors regarding the COVID pandemic. There was approximately 36 plus who participated in this 1 hour and 15-minute virtual session. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE VIDEO
Dr. Zubair Saeed (Community Health Specialist) with the Fairfax County Health Department outreach team was very knowledgeable as he provided information on numerous items related to COVID. He has provided the latest research and guidance around health recommendations and best practices to the
health department team. Additionally, he works closely with vulnerable communities to ensure they have access to the best information and resources. Some items discussed were signs, symptoms, short- and longterm effects, and the types of vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson and Johnson).
He provided an overview and comparison of the three vaccines that included risks and side effects. Additionally, he discussed how variants arise, the currently identified variants (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta – the Delta variant is now the most prevalent in the United States), and the need for vaccine boosters. Finally, he covered the protective measures (face mask, social distance, handwashing, and stay at home when sick) that should be used to help control the spread and keep everyone safe. The Psi Alpha Alpha Brothers pray continuously for the safety of your family and friends during these unprecedented times.

Young Leaders Collected Scholarships And End Of The Year Awards
uffolk, VA— On Saturday, June 5, 2021 the Alpha Iota Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. youth mentorship program conducted a scholarship award presentation event from noon to 2:30 PM at Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk, Virginia. Present and past young leaders gathered to collect their scholarships and awards. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the chapter was unable to hold a formal award banquet. The Grab and Go event was designed for young leaders to collect their awards for their exceptional achievements and outstanding contribution made to The Golden Fold. Awardees accepted their awards two days prior via Zoom. Traditionally the chapter would be celebrating many of its award winners in a ballroom in
Suffolk, Virginia. As in previous years, dining would occur in the banquet ballroom, mingling with parents and young leaders, and making new friends. However, this is a year like no other. Like many other organizations, the celebration was virtual. On Thursday, June 3, 2021 over 50 friends and family members zoomed in and celebrated virtually, as the chapter saluted excellence in The Golden Fold. The Golden Fold class of 2021 graduated ten seniors. It is the largest graduating class of Suffolk Golden Fold. With a pandemic and restrictions due to COVID-19 the Golden Fold endured and accomplished its mission. The Golden Fold awarded its young leaders over $16,000 in scholarships and recognized its young leaders for their academic excellence and community service.
The Suffolk Golden Fold is the youth mentorship program of Alpha Iota Chapter that serves the greater community of Suffolk, Virginia, by offering community service projects, field trips, college lectures and university tours on the weekends. HESAPEAKE, VA— Saturday, June 19, 2021, the Community Resource Opportunity Project (C.O.R.P) Inc. Foundation, in conjunction with The Sigma Kappa Kappa Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., premiered its Fourth Annual Scholarship and Recognition Award Ceremony hosted in the J.T.F. Banquet Facility. You may view this Virtual Presentation at your convenience by linking to CROP Foundation Fourth Annual Scholarship and Awards Virtual Presentation. This year’s ceremony was drastically different from previous years due to the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols; however, “when you’re up against a trouble, meet it squarely face-to-face.” The moderator for the virtual ceremony was Brother Winfield Edwards, Scholarship Chairman. Seven graduating high school seniors and one deserving citizen received accolades for their scholastic and community endeavors. The C.R.O.P. scholarship recipients are as follows: Mr. Caleb Fulford, $1,500.00 (Great Bridge High School); Mr. Marcus Green, $1,000.00 (Nansemond River High School); Mr. Caston Reaves II, $1,000.00 (Deep Creek High School); Mr. Antonio Green, $500.00 (Deep Creek High School); Ms. Samantha O’Prandy, $500.00 (Western Branch High School); and Mr. Joshua Barbish, $500.00 (Deep Creek High School). The Perseverance scholarship recipient was Ms. Maya Jefferies, $500.00 (Deep Creek High School). Each recipient was noted for their Community Service, Leadership, and 3.0 or higher G.P.A. In addition to our C.R.O.P. Scholarship Awardees, our 2020-2021 Citizen of the Year is none other than Ms. Nischelle Buffalow, C.E.O. of Buffalow Family and Friends Community Days. The C.R.O.P.
